.htmlAt long last,Rise is seeping into the movie mags.Total Film #181 for July 2011 has a three page feature, full of pics (I don't have a scanner) and observes 'Ignore the silly title. This looks good'.And, 'Say what you like about re-boots.This isn't Tim Burton'.So, a good vibe.Amazingly, SFX Mag this month, which came out AFTER Total Film, doesn't even mention Apes. The lack of SFX Mag coverage borders on positive antipathy towards Apes, frankly. If it aint Doctor Who, they don't care, which is just pathetic. The pics in Total Film include trailer screen grabs and the still hold up to close scrutiny in print--the CGI is ground breaking stuff.Anyway, the print media is off to a good start on Rise.John, Scrolls.

I got suckered into FAST FIVE, but I haven't bothered seeing anything else and went to nothing this weekend. I'm just not interested. Now, I plan on going to X-MEN next weekend, but I sure hope it's worth it.

.htmlThis episode just serves to prove that the movie business can drive you to drink. She's obviously an alcoholic, sad to say, and I hope she gets help -- and maybe gets out of a business that really doesn't care about anyone.

.html.html I'm sure we would have heard something by now.
So I doubt it. At least we have a film clip this weekend on the MTV Movie Awards.
As for X-Men, it would be a shame if they didn't. Major lost opportunity in my opinion.

Do we know if we'll be getting action figures for Rise of the POTA? Will the Ape characters be well enough defined/distinguished for separate figures? I hope so---I love my Apes dollies. John, Scrolls.

Well, I guess I have to record the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday night. I usually pay it no attention, and will be watching "Game of Thrones" on HBO while it records -- that way I can play it back and scan through all the commercials and just watch "that which matters."

.htmlSo far reaction seems to run the gamut from people thinking the CG sucks to people thinking the CG is great to people thinking the dialogue/situations suck to people thinking it's a compelling take. I was taken by how much the trailer seemed to be made for me as an Ape fan. The stuff on the bridge looks so much like "Conquest". It was so cool when Caesar spelt out "Jacobs" (the name of the corporate guy who runs the lab). Good thing he didn't know how to spell "Zanuck". The trailer still stuck to the themes of the first trailer instead of broadening out so it remains to be seen how much heft the final script has, but the trio of Caesar, Franco and Pinto stood out for me this time, and the menace from Brian Cox.
The CG, yeah it will never be 100% but neither would an actor in ape makeup. It's an art form. It looked to me at least as good as the new "King Kong". It's a lot harder to portray creatures we are used to seeing doing things we aren't used to seeing them do then to create aliens or corrupted hobbits or blue Sigourney Weavers. I dug the trailer but it remains to be seen how audiences will take to it. Those going to the movies this weekend (especially "X-Men"), if they show this trailer take note of how the audience reacts. Like the makeup test almost a half century ago, if they don't laugh we're solid.

Well, that trailer just about had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. It's got me about as excited I used to get forty years when I'd hear a new sequel was on the way. I never got this excited over the Burton movie when I first saw its trailer. This one seems to have everything right. The CGI is as much fun to watch as it would be if it was the greatest monkey makeup ever.
This movie looks as if it's going to be the sleeper of the year. I can't imagine the American public, after flocking to crap like THE HANGOVER 2, aren't going to flock to this. This could be AVATAR huge (You heard it here first). Fox better sell this thing BIG! Yeah, but have you seen some of the films Abrahams was involved
with? Spaceships? Talking monkeys?? Sounds pretty schlocky if you ask
me.
It's funny how the names keep popping up. James Gregory has the lead in a
series called "The Lawless Years" which ran from 1959-61, and Paul Richards
appeared in a five part story arc in the third season. I don't know
what happened to Richard's character at the end, but eight years later he'd
cross paths with Gregory again. I always wondered if character actors would
joke with each other on the set of subsequent productions ("Hey- didn't I arrest
you once after you shot my partner?").
Chris L.
>>I've been renting old TV shows from Netflix and have seen, besides
Sal Mineo, Paul Richards in a first season episode of "Hawaii 5-0" and Richards
in a 1962 episode of "Perry Mason." I also rented the first volume of a very
early (1952) TV show that was done live out of NYC called "Tales From Tomorrow"
that was produced by some guy named Mort Abrahams. <<

It partially sounds like 'The Wizard of Mars', but there wasn't anything
about the city shrinking. They were trapped between two moments in time
and needed someone to help them start it again so their civilization could
come to a natural end (this all makes much more sense if you see the film- not
going to explain the whole story out here).
I believe Australia is the only country where the entire, unaltered film
was released on DVD. You can get it here if you're interested (it's the version
that I own):
Hope this helps.

>>Hi Apers,
I was wondering if you could have me remember the
name of a sci-fi film hopefully made in the 60's? I think it starred Liam
Sullivan (Star Trek: Plato's Stepchildren) , but his filmography does not
indicate the film in question-so maybe I'm wrong. It's been so long since
I saw the film that I don't know the full story; but herewith is what I can
remember: A crew of 4 or 5 astronauts/spacemen crash on Mars, during the
film they encounter a Martian with a transparent done head showing his brain,
and apparently this Martian needs the humans help to shrink his city to help the
Martian civilization to survive, the humans succeed in doing what was needed,
and the city begins to shrink, but they have to escape city or be trapped with
the Martians; then somehow at the end of the film the humans end back on their
spaceship above Mars. Well that's it, any help will be
appreciated. I'm hoping this film is availble on DVD, once I know it's
name. <<<.html <.html

This Sunday they premiere a new clip from "Rise". I thought they might be part of News Corp. , the company that owns 20th Century Fox but no, they are owned by Viacom (Paramount is their studio). "Rise" has been so under the radar that MTV has really stood out as bringing it up. I remember they had some specials on to promote POTA2001 as well. Maybe they feel POTA fits their demographic. They have no problem with orange superheroes flying around in their underwear but this premise they hate. When someone leaves a comment that they like it, then according to these posters, they are shills for Fox. I never saw a website so anti-apes it looks almost like a well designed studio attack if I was a conspiracy nut. Shame though, they have a good quality trailer, they dont deserve it.
I think its great and something different and it still can morph into a classic Apes look if they choose so and they make mucho money.

People were making the same comments before AVATAR was released so I wouldn't pay it no mind.
The bottom line is whether people dig apes or not. Burton's 68 million dollar weekend 10 years ago shows that they do.
So the only real question is if the film is good enough to stand on it's own week after week as Burton's wasn't.
So far I love what I see. Both visualy and script wise.
Lovin it.

Burton's Apes did us a lot of damage. It made Apes the convenient whipping boy for dead heads who need to criticise to feel they exist.Even ten years later, the stench lingers. That's one reason why (in spite of my own initial reservations about CGI)it's so refreshing that Rise is SO fresh, SO new.I don't think I've ever felt more absorbed by a trailer than I am by this second Rise trailer.I'm going to use a very bad analogy here for the one and only time, but if you remember Scooby Doo, as dreadful as that was, two minutes in that WAS Scooby--I had totally, totally suspended disbelief and Scooby was a real character (more real than Freddy, actually). With Rise, this will be a quantum leap further in the reality stakes. We, as Apes fans, need to be vocal--every forum or site should be filled with positivity from Apes fans now. We've been a punch bag for too long.Let's take a leaf out of Caesar's book and punch back.John,
Scrolls.

Great trailer . Did you read the comments. These people must all be in an Ape haters club.

They act like it's personal, like a football game where the humans lose. It's not that hard to research what the director has said before flapping their yap. The filmmakers chose the toughest POTA story they could do, the origin story, and even if they got it wrong it's not like the superhero movies or "Harry Potter" (or "The Hangover") are documentaries. At worst, "Rise" will be par for the summer course.

Finally a guy tells the end of the movie just to shut up all the idiots bitching about how impossible it would be for a few dozen apes to conquer the world. Either you dig POTA, or you don't, and if you don't, go watch yet another highly probable superhero movie, or giant talking robots, or aliens that battle cowboys.

Well, I just got back from X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and the new RISE trailer is the last one shown before the movie. I've watched this trailer at least five times now, so it goes by pretty fast for me now. The CGI looks OK on the big screen, but CGI is always CGI, still this is the best way to do the primitive apes. The reaction from the audience I sat with was silence after it was done, though I did hear a woman behind me whisper "Cool." But, at least no one laughed or yelled out "That'll suck!." The theatre wasn't that packed and it was mostly a family crowd. A bigger audience packed with fan boys would probably have a much different reaction.
As for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (for those who care), it was OK, but I thought overlong. I'm just not into this kind of thing, so it left me unmoved, but it wasn't a waste of money.... at least January Jones was in it, and boy, she's a cold bitch. The movie is practically wall to wall CGI, but the prosthetics work done on some of the actors is just as phoney looking. The cinematography now is so sharp and clear, that prosthetics just look like what they are -- rubber. That said, it was good makeup.
I also saw a trailer for GREEN LANTERN and that looks like it's going to be pretty good. It has a retro-'50s Sci-Fi look to it that appeals to me.

I enjoyed "X-Men", though it started slow. The early Nazi stuff was kind of awkward. I think the movie works better if you know the other ones, at least the first two. Fun putting it in the '60's, though they should've stuck closer to history. Good reviews but a slow start at the box office (estimated $ 53 million weekend). Fox is philosophical, comparing it to "Batman Begins". Will "Rise" save Fox's summer or will Jim Carrey's penguins?

.htmlOur group has been moved to the "Adult" catagory for some strange reason. This happened once before about a year and a half ago. I've already contacted Yahoo! to request that it be moved back. That process takes about 2 weeks so everyone will have to put up with the warning until the problem is fixed.

I'm sure from what I've read so far, that there isn't anything too controversial residing in this group. I hope I haven't wandered into some fetish group by accident. ;) > > > Graham >

Just discovered this very short featurette on RISE at IMDB.com
Not very long, but it does promise what's probably the most intriguing film of what looks like a brain dead summer so far. Let's see how good SUPER 8 is this weekend.

.htmlI went to see X-Men:First Class last night and saw the Rise trailer--last trailer out of five, right before the movie. It looked astonishing on the big screen and there was a sort of reverential hush in the auditorium--it definitely had an impact. This was the first trailer---the new trailer will blow people's minds.Sky 1 over here, sadly, is currently showing Burton's Apes, which spoils the mood a bit.
Incidentally, X-Men First Class was, imho, the perfect X-Movie and it contains the most killer cameo since Taylor in Beneath.Great fun. John, Scrolls.

.htmlFox is planning to get into the ape business big time. Besides "Rise of the POTA" (and maybe sequels) they plan to visit "King Kong" in an animated feature. Fox has already done the animated "Space Chimps" and a straight to DVD sequel but maybe good vibes for "Rise" is behind this announcement.

.htmlBrian Cox plays lousy human bastard Hank Landon (I love that name) in "Rise of the POTA". He doesn't bother treating the apes at his "sanctuary" well because they're not human, you know. Cox is the only "Rise" actor, and maybe the only "Rise" person period, who has worked with original "Apes" director Franklin Schaffner. Cox played no less than Commie icon Leon Trotsky ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Trotsky ) in Schaffner's "Nicholas and Alexandra".
http://www.coxian.com/media/photos/index..html"
In this century he starred in and produced Rupert Wyatt's first feature, "The Escapist", which paved the way for Wyatt directing "Rise" (Cox says Fox asked him for a recommendation before hiring Wyatt). Cox has had a great career but seems best known for playing villains in flicks like "Troy", "X-Men 2", the "Bourne" movies, and he was even the first to play beloved cannibal Hannibal Lector (the role later gobbled up by Anthony Hopkins) in "Manhunter".
Cox has talked recently about "Rise". Says he about this new CG world: "Now the CGI people can do all the makeup. It's great, but I like the old style. We have to move with the times". But it's not makeup, you know.

.htmlJohn, you are parnoid but that doesn't mean they're not out to get you;-)
My guess, and this a total guess so I could be wrong, is that due to the lead time for most of these magazines of about 2 to 3 months, Fox publicity was caught short and missed the deadlines due to the film being moved up to the 8/5 premiere date.

.htmlEven though I feel the same way about mags, I feel they are mostly irrelevent now, even though I loved them. The internet and TV and word of mouth will do it for Apes. It is strange though since Apes has been doing very well with youtube and other electronic outlets. I hope it all comes through in the wash and Apes blows them all away.. Comics, books, dolls and even more things are happeneing so the magazine indifference is strange. They do have this superheroe and gore frenzy on their minds and placing Apes is hard for this new generation of editors and anything to do with the past is ignored to them or they are tired of anything that can have a brain behind it, its a hard question to answer, I hope they shape up..Take care, John M.
