The printed media now is becoming an endangered species.Film, comic and sci fi mags are disappearing at an alarming rate.Which makes me even more peeved that those few mags that ARE still around aren't catering to real fans, with established fan bases, by properly covering an Apes event movie.Yes the schedule was altered but if Total Film can do a nice three pager just about the first trailer, it's shameful that the UK's two sci fi mags just ignore it.I know I'm a dinosaur from the era when trading cards were the nearest thing to video tapes of your favourite show, but I just prefer actual paper magazines to wil-o-the-wisp internet.John, Scrolls.

I was watching a re-run of an early Family Guy last night and there was an Apes skit where Peter, in a net, surrounded by gun-toting gorillas,tells an Ape-offensive joke about 'How many dirty Apes does it take to change a light bulb.Three, one to change the bulb and two to fling faeces'(I'm paraphrasing a bit!).Do we have this clip anywhere--it actually feels more authentic in some ways than the various Simpsons ones.A later family guy has a good skit on Zaius--is Seth an Apesfan, do we know? The BOOM! PLANET OF THE APES comics are doing great...and, just to clarify, has always been promoted as an ongoing series.

I can't support it, the comic store hasn't received anything from BOOM! as
far as the second issue goes... I went in there the week issue 2 was
supposed to be out and the guy said BOOM! didn't send him any copies ("yet"), but
while there I had him order me the reprint of issue 1... I stopped by there
almost two weeks later and still nothing, no issue 2 and/or no copy of the
issue 1 reprint...

Little hard to support what can't be bought...

There was a short segment with Brian "Apemania" Penikas last night. Nothing "Apes" but he can't help having that going on in the background. Basically, they showed him he had some stuff lying around from his makeup career that were worth money. And indeed they sold a "Jeepers Creepers" thing for him for $10,000. Brian comes across as a bit clueless about the interest in movie collectibles. I find that hard to believe, Mr. Smart, especially since he runs Apemania, a collectibles business. As is the case with "reality" shows, I get the feeling the drama is heightened. But I enjoy the show just for seeing what people have (there was one guy who had the original RKO logo camera art that was estimated to go for $ 800 and wound up getting $ 85,000). Maybe we'll get more "Ape" collectibles episodes if "Rise" is a success (people wanting to grab original "Ape" stuff now that it's the end of an era and the apes are CG).

Jeffrey Wells of "Hollywood-Elsewhere" mentioned that the 50th anniversary blu-ray of "Ben Hur" is coming out in this the 52nd anniversary year. And Warner Bros. responded by saying it got delayed to get it right but they still consider it a celebration of the 50th anniversary. So there!
Wells notes that this is the highest resolution restoration Warners has ever done. So double there!
"Ben Hur" resulted in an Oscar win for Charlton Heston, who was in some other movies as well.

I recently bought Films Plus for April 1968 which has an interview with Chuck in which he says 'Now if Frank and all of us have done our jobs well,then the bitter social cooment implicit in Boulle's novel will also work'.Which, given that this is a very contemporary interview, makes me wonder just how Zanuck couldn't have appreciated he was making a socio-political film? That should have been 'Films and Filming', not Films Plus--couldn't read my own sanskrit.One photo caption refers, without a hint of irony, to 'a gorilla militia man'(!).I also bought the 1978 Clapperboard Film Quiz Book.Clapperboard was a kids' show that looked at cinema, showed clips and was actually ,maybe, ahead of its time.I took a gamble it might do some Apes and it does--3 questions.One is a photo pic of Chuch being restrained by two gorillas, and one is a name the film from the plot.The final one is a stinker that has me flummoxed.Question topic 23 is 'The following group of films all include animals in their titles....(f)Planet of the ?'.I feel I should know it, but it's eluding me.Anybody remember the Sphere Science Fiction Movie Quiz Book---that had three pages of Apes questions.There's a whole Apes Quiz world to list out there. That's a damn shame.Sometimes, just sometimes, comic book shops can be a barrier to comics---for whatever reason, clear and simple requests can be shot into a black hole of apathy from which no light escapes.I've got a good dealer (the Apes fan Graham Hill of American Graffiti comics in Devon, UK) and I've also easily bought other 'spare' copies from other shops to spread the BOOOM! They never sold the creeper on the cross ,supposed bidder never came thru, but since its tv they couldn't have that,since they put so much time into showing it,phantom computer bid. But he did restore and sold the animatronic creeper head that was briefly shown,to bad they didn't show that.

  But you know profiles is all about saving history ,the %35 they receive combined from seller and buyer ,they have to do ,,soooooooooo against there beliefs.There only in it to save movie history not the money.

   And joe to keep his hot red head assistant happy and interested in him.

I do think its funny they hired and showed a new employee who knows nothing about movies and probably never seen one that wasn't bootlegged,good going profiles! all about the history                goapebilly

Our comics are sold to comic book stores through Diamond Distributors, so it sounds like the shop's order was messed up.
If you want to email me with the info for the store, I can see what I can do on my end. Standard operating
procedure for stores with orders that don't get filled is to call their customer service representative at Diamond,
we do not deal directly with stores. I do know that sometimes getting messed up orders fixed takes some time,
and I know how frustrating it is to wait. Hold tight. I am sure you'll get your copy!

I'm in Ireland today, at a Catholic retreat centre in Ballyvallo,Wexford.No, this is not a final grab for my eternal soul,my aunt is a nun here and I'm dossing down as there's a hurling match tonight.The centre has its own beach, which is a continuation of the beach used in Saving Private Ryan.Walking on it this morning, I was struck by the uncanny resemblance the beach has with Taylor's beach--I almost expected to see Liberty appear round the corner.Sadly, no, and even more sadly, no Nova.What is it about the sea and Apes, be it movie or tv series, that just feels SO right, somehow?I love all of the sea scenes in Apes. John, Scrolls.

And to think that the guy who is playing Sal Mineo for James Franco was on the new "Hawaii 5-0". God is trying to tell us something!

You know I checked out some episodes of "Hawaii 5-0" that Sal Mineo guest starred in, renting them from Netflix. Well, watching the first season has been fun because it was filmed in 1968-69 and it's cool to think PLANET was in theatres while this was shot. Anyway, the other day I was watching an episode and a character was walking past the "Waikiki Theatre," which was on Kalakaua Ave. and was a 1,300 seat theatre that eventually got broken up into three theatres and then was torn down in 2005. I could easily see that the title on the marquee was VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, and I thought, "Too bad it wasn't POTA."

So, I'm watching another episode the other day and I watch the end credits for the 20th time or something and I notice that the Waikiki Theatre Marquee shows up again near the very end just as the credit reads "Filmed Entirely on Location in Hawaii." The first season of "Hawaii 5-0" had an end credit sequence that was a shot from the back of a police motorcycle racing down Kalakaua Ave. at night. Ok, so I freeze-frame this and examine it closely on my 46" plasma.

Check out the screen grabs to see what I caught. My Blu-ray player does a better job at freezing every frame than the DVD player with my computer. So one shot just shows you the theatre marquee, but the other shot shows you something more.

Sorry John, I've got Taylor's actual beach right here and I don't have to worry about my soul because it's already a lost cause.
But I agree I've always loved seeing the apes with the sea behind them. Even on the TV show. It's kind of a look into eternity.

Yes, Ursus says "Men over there!" when Brent starts mashing on the organ. I don't remember the slip ups in the TV series though.

There's an 'old man' reference to the Lawgiver in, gasp, BOOM! #2. The animated series novels are riddled with them.I've always tried to rationalise the movies and tv series doing it by using the alalogy of US Marines being 'dogfaces' or the British 8th Army being The Desert Rats---it's a slangy/quasi affectionate term.Not a great theory, but it comforts me! The sound and Jeff's 'look into eternity' sum it up.It's a familiar constant that anchors our reality and gives a sharp context for our Apes world.I've always loved Marvel's Future History Chronicles for its ships and sea adventures, too.The crashing of the waves on Taylor's beach is THE memory trigger sound for me with Apes---like it was today.I think Apes, not Jaws--sorry Mr Zanuck!!! The crashing wave sounds at the end of POTA are almost as much of iconic part of the ending as the shot of Liberty. At least in my mind. I loved the fact that in that scene, after Taylor finishes his rant, the go back to silence with only the crashing wave sounds again. It just makes that scene that much more memorable.

FINALLY got to read Amanda Silver & Rick Jaffa's screenplay for RISE yesterday and it is absolutely brilliant.

Quite small and self-contained save the big battle on the Golden Gate bridge but a great "human" story with alot of heart and some wonderful moments.

On another note -- have U.S. 1 sheet posters for BENEATH thru BATTLE and the same in UK quad cinema posters for sale. Any takers?

The Fox marketing department is not getting high marks for posters lately. Pretty generic stuff. The posters for "X-Men" weren't that good and bad posters were blamed for the poor showing of last year's Tom Cruise movie...uh, I can't even remember the name.

No, I have nothing to announce, but that I've been thinking about what the ROTPOTA 1-Sheet poster will eventually look like. I know we already have something out there, but I hope that's not what we'll finally get. Anyone have opinions about what the eventual poster images should be? Fox probably already has things set and ready to go, but I think there's a good opportunity here for Fox to redeem what's generally considered the worst 1-Sheet from the original series, that being of course BATTLE's 1-Sheet (and every other kind of BATTLE poster, not including foreign ones).

I think a poster depicting a large modern male gorilla roaring and holding over its head one of those San Francisco riot police, in the same general pose as the painting on the BATTLE poster, with riot scenes from RISE around it and the ROTPOTA title above would be pretty cool, though of course, this movie is going to be more about Caesar than any particular gorilla. Maybe a fierce adult male chimpanzee instead of a gorilla?

Yes, this has nothing to do with the other movies. Except tributes, like names, visuals. Just in the trailers there's lots of cues, like the chimp holding out it's damn dirty paw for another cookie, or all the "Conquest" nods in the bridge scene. Caesar writing "Jacobs". Andy Serkis said there's going to be a lot of fun Easter eggs for fans.

Comic-Con in recent years has become a madhouse, a madhouse! when it comes to promoting new movies but reportedly studios are chilling to the idea that it helps much. However, "Rise of the POTA" is one of the flicks expected to have a presentation this year (since the Con takes place July 21 - 24, the timing is perfect). So it could be a good gathering spot this year for "Ape" fans in general, though it might be better called Planet of the Sardines. I think it's already sold out. We'll see if Fox has something cool up their sleeve.

I dont know if this is a place for selling. The Heritage Auction group whos headquaters are in Texas, sell and aquires posters of everything and Apes are popular but prices go all over the place. They were close to buying my entire collection mostly because I have almost every size and shape and 1-6 sheet and etc. of the original Planet of the Apes68. I was offered about 10 grand . The sequels are semi valuable but they are mostly interested in Planet68 and all the odd sizes. They offered me about a grand each for just the 14x36 window card and the 14x21 small display poster. The prices change all the time. One day my one sheet and three sheet are worth over a grand each and then the next day half that. With the new movie coming out I would think prices would escalate, if it is a big hit. The lobby cards from Planet go for about 500 bucks most of the time. Since they are an auction site you can get something wonderfull and extremely cheap if nobody is watching. John M.

I first saw the first 2 movies as a kid in elementary school or junior high. I saw the first two again but have yet to see the others. I have several questions that experts may be able to answer:
1) Why was it called PLANET of the Apes when it was not apparent that apes had taken over the whole world, but only Manhattan? Shouldn't it have been called CITY of the Apes?
2) In Beneath, Cornelius says that the chimpanzees are a minority and don't have power against the gorillas. How did this happen? How did the gorillas become the military power, and how did the orangutans attain civilian power in the city according to their history?
3) How did the humans lose their power of speech when the semians acquired power of speech?
4) Did the Icarus land in Arizona, and the 3 astronauts trekked all the way to NY?
5) What had happened in the rest of the world aside from Manhattan?
6) How did an activated bomb get transferred into St. Patrick's cathedral?
7) Last but not least, if it became almost easy to travel over time through the Hasslein Curve, shouldn't it have been possible to travel back and forth, at least to prevent the destruction of the Earth?
8) And NOW that I have just seen Escape from POTA, is there an explanation of the rationale why Cornelius and Zira and Dr. Milo decided to fuel up the Icarus and leave if they didn't know the planet was going to be destroyed, and left family behind? At what point did they switch the baby gorilla at Armando's circus for their own, and did it make any difference that theirs was a chimp and the other one was a gorilla?

The apes didn't take over Manhattan, actually--the human mutants live there. Ape City is somewhere outside that area. Some fans think it may have been in New Jersey, while others surmise that it was on Long Island, or possibly in Westchester County. The films aren't clear on this.

Nope, because that would have telegraphed the ending, and been a very anticlimactic name. In any case, the films never say that the apes only have a single city. Caesar's dialog in the fourth film, in fact, indicates there are probably other ape cities out there. (And the TV series explores several of them.)

That's not been revealed. Since chimps are naturally a lot more aggressive and violent than gorillas in the real world, it's unclear why this happened.

That was never explained on film, though it's possible the plague from space could have had something to do with it.

The ship (coined the Icarus by a fan in the '70s, but more recently christened the Liberty-1 on the Blu-ray set) didn't land in Arizona. It landed in the area of New York, New Jersey or somewhere thereabouts.

See above about Manhattan. :) But I do understand what you're asking, and outside of Ape City, we see little of the outside world on film, other than the Forbidden Zone in films 1, 2 and 5, and the West Coast civilizations of the TV series.

They're very vague about it in Escape. Popular theory has long been that Milo, being a genius, found the ship and figured out (somehow) how it worked, and Zira and Cornelius were along for the ride.

I watched The Escapist last night.I was seriously impressed.There are some scenes with cons lining an upper walway that are actually very similar to scenes in the Rise trailers.I'm even more psyched for the new movie now! Word of warning though--The Escapist is unpleasant viewing in parts and very adult.Also has Brian'they're not people you know'Cox, who gives a career best performance, imho.John, Scrolls.

That's the golden question, and is pretty much the least plausible aspect of the films, in my opinion. The only way to explain it is to assume something supernatural happened, or that evolution took a huge leap forward within a single generation. Granted, neither explanation makes a lot of sense.

As for Rise, since this is the start of a new story, and not a sequel or prequel to the prior films, they didn't have to take Conquest into account.

Now as a middle-aged adult I am extremely impressed by the underlying moral messages in the original movies despite the obvious thematic flaws. I have yet to see the 2001 movie which sounds like it was a totally different story. I have yet to see the 13 TV episodes as well.
Seems to me though that the female apes were pretty much in hiding except for Zira and Lisa. No female orangutans or gorillas. Pretty neat how they became all so intelligent in only 10 years. With elderly wise teachers etc.

I watched The Escapist last night.I was seriously impressed.There are some scenes with cons lining an upper walway that are actually very similar to scenes in the Rise trailers.I'm even more psyched for the new movie now! We have to assume the apes were on their way in "Conquest". After all, Lisa speaks at the end (though it wasn't the original ending, "Battle" was based off the revised ending). I would have to assume they were the result of genetic breeding to make them better slaves, though the humans didn't plan on them getting smart and talking (they just had plenty of warning in "Escape"). Or Caesar's "presence" caused it to happen, a theory I've heard. Maybe whatever caused the apes to evolve in the first place (a virus?) was brought back.
In any case, the apes were changing between "Escape" and "Conquest" and then the length of time to "Battle" completed them. Apes to "Battle": "You... complete me!"

That's the golden question, and is pretty much the least plausible aspect of the films, in my opinion. The only way to explain it is to assume something supernatural happened, or that evolution took a huge leap forward within a single generation. Granted, neither explanation makes a lot of sense.

As for Rise, since this is the start of a new story, and not a sequel or prequel to the prior films, they didn't have to take Conquest into account.

This reviewer evokes World War I and the Iraq War in analyzing POTA # 2. Eric Greene on Line 2. But I like this kind of talk. POTA is supposed to reverberate.

While we're at it, what happened between Conquest and Battle that led to nuclear war, and why did the underdwellers remain in the filthy dark underground if they could live on the land like the apes and other humans?
Why did the apes not develop technologically in the 2000 years between Battle and POTA?
They remained in the horse and buggy stage for 2000 years despite having knowledge in other areas.

Speaking of which, I viewed two episodes of the animated version, and I can see why it didn't last. It was very poor quality of animation in my non-professional's mind. I doubt many kids would have enjoyed it even in the 1970s (I was already in high school).

.htmlThe animated series is available on Hulu.com. I love POTA but even I found it tedious. Ironically, I loved the cartoon when I was a kid. I don't think the TV series is available anywhere, but you can pick up the DVD for not too much cash on eBay or Amazon.<.html

.html I have checked that book out of the library a couple times and it is a fantastic book. But the book details the movies he had more intimate involvement with and that didn't include Apes.

Since Abbott was the head of Fox's effects department, his name would be on a lot of Fox movies he had little involvement with.

They lived in the city's underground tunnels which were designed to
withstand intense bombings so not everything was destroyed, just the above ground
part of the city was really ruined...
