"Rise" wouldn't fit in the BOOM! continuity because they suggest a circular timeline. The "Rise" director plans for "Rise" to be part of Classic "Apes" continuity but that would only fit in an alternate timeline (since it takes place in the 2010's, not the 70's/90's of "Escape"/"Conquest"). I guess "Rise" would lead to the original and "Beneath" before "Escape" would reboot it.
One thing I don't yet understand about RISE is that it would take twenty years for Caesar to grow up. Does RISE cover such a time span, and if so, does the James Franco character mature?

Judging from the trailers, Franco doesn't change much (except in his opinion about apes).

We know that "Rise of the POTA" will be rated
PG-13... but why? For "intense and frightening sequences of action and violins".
What?! Who cares what kind of instruments the
composer uses to make his music?! That's ridiculous! Now they've gone too
far.
Oh, wait. It says "action and violENCE". That
makes more sense. Never mind.
At least you prudes won't have to worry about sex
or naughty words. That's a f*cking relief!

Easy there Tyler Woods.
Some of us don't think of
these movies as High Camp!
Well, not the first one anyway.
"Yes I remember being that ten-year-old
girl watching Planet of the Apes for the first time and being part fascinated
and part frightened. It will be interesting to see what changes the new show
will bring. I loved the makeup and the clothing it was cheesy and fun. I hope
the new one doesn't make it so realistic that it loses its
campyness." <.html <.html

The "Rise" director plans for "Rise" to be part of Classic "Apes" continuity but that would only fit in an alternate timeline (since it takes place in the 2010's, not the 70's/90's of "Escape"/"Conquest"). I guess "Rise" would lead to the original and "Beneath" before "Escape" would reboot it.

.htmlSome folks at USC are working on a way to use Twitter to predict box office. The graph in the article shows both positive and negative references to each movie. And it seems to work. Both "Harry Potter" and "Transformers" had a lot of activity and that interest is born out in the box office ("Harry" is breaking records and "Transformers" is already at $ 700 million worldwide, so $ 1 billion seems guaranteed). But it probably doesn't take a genius to figure that.
"Cowboys and Aliens" is at the other end of the spectrum but that's always been considered the long shot. "Rise" is somewhere in the "X-Men"/"Green Lantern"/"Super 8" area. "Captain America" is doing very well on this chart and opens this week.
I don't think the marketing of "Rise" has been all it could be, but we'll see if they rally over the next 3 weeks as the other blockbusters fall away.

Heavy promotion is just getting started. I watched the season premiere of "Rescue Me" on FX Wednesday night and there were two spots for RISE. OK, so that's just FX and that's a Fox owned channel, but probably RISE spots will soon be shown on other Fox channels and then in the week or two before August 5th they'll be on the network shows. Remember, it's expensive to promote a movie and if you want to maximize profit, you don't spend too much on promotion.

.html I'm calling it. Ape Season begins this Thursday (July 21st) at Comic-Con when there's a panel on POTA comics plus whatever Fox is planning for "Rise" (sounds like a panel; Freida Pinto is scheduled, among others). The "Rise" soundtrack hits July 26th. The Changing of the Guard is July 27th when POTA2001 turns 10 and steps down. The Ape marathon in Philly is July 31st. And then August 5th looks like a good day to go to the movies.
Ape season. Say goodbye to your family, give up your worldly possessions and Go Ape. No excuses! <.html

.html According to Neil Moxham, the August issue of "Empire" quotes "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt thinkin' 'bout the Icarus: "We had to ask ourselves, do we want to, for example, mention Icarus, because does that therefore mean we're referencing a film that actually we're saying doesn't exist? In the original POTA the Icarus mission happened in 1972, and we're saying it happened between 2010 and 2016. But yeah, we're definitely using that as a backdrop".
Of course there's also the question of calling it the Icarus, a fan creation, and in Fox's own blu-ray is what called, what, the Liberty? I think it's best to just consider this it's own thing and the Icarus a nice little nod. Details matter, unless they get inventive about it like the new "Star Trek" movie did. <.html

An average person might not give a hoot or understand the mythos of the Apes saga and just think of this film as an action film-God forbid-. I still wish it was R rated but I like how they are doing it so far, if Fox cares what I think.

prequel to "Planet of the Apes" to give would-be viewers a leg up on
the film's premise.
The publisher, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox, said Wednesday

groundwork for the story in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," with
weekly installments through Aug. 3, just two days before the film

I saw TV spots on several cable channels this weeks in different shows including The Daily Show.
I saw one last night on a repeat of "Cops" on Fox. I don't watch much commercial TV, and hardly watch the networks at all, so I'm not seeing everything, but the point is that Fox has already started the big push for RISE.

I don't think the music is Doyle's yet, plus I
see some ape shots hopefully they will touch up in the final movie, in terms of
movement.

From the banner and other posters it looks like the title is actually "THE Rise of the Planet of the Apes." That's a lot of "The's" for one movie.
So, what's the general attitude here as we're about three weeks away from the opening? Are you excited about seeing this movie, still wary it may suck, or you're neither here nor there about it? Even if you're only a lurker here, please chime in to this unofficial poll.

I only count one "The". Remember that band The
The?
With all the crickets chirping I assume people
have split so they won't get spoilers. I'm looking forward to it. I think some
people won't be able to get past the CG and so be it. I've enjoyed movies like
"Lord of the Rings", the new "King Kong" and "District 9" so I'm ready to roll.
I just hope the movie is edited tighter than some of the trailers so the CG is
even more effective. They linger too long on that shot where Caesar looks away
from Brian Cox.

Initially, I was sceptical about it, and the first trailer tended to confirm my scepticism that it'd be some action orientated film with little thought. Then after the second trailer (or the one that had more empathy, story and characterisation), I felt a lot better about it, and the more I heard about it, the better I felt. However, that interview with James Franco in Playboy that was linked to here a week or so ago got me a little disconcerted, because he seemed to indicate that despite initially being something more thoughtful, he was seeing something more action orientated after the reshoots. Then I reminded myself that he himself hasn't seen the final product, as well as Jeff K giving some assurances that what he saw looked good (I think it was Jeff K), so maybe I'm worried over nothing, or little at all. So, after all that, I'm interested, with some hope that it could be good, but with some slight trepidation. Let's just say I have mixed feelings,
veering on the positive.

So, it's here: the release of my Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes novel. Back in 2007 I pitched the idea of this to FOX, have labored for the past 4 years through many trials and tribulations, and have finally gotten to this point.
This project has been about love from the beginning, love for Planet of the Apes, love of "making things fit" (continuity), and a love of storytelling.
Over the past year, in the final stretch of getting this done, I found romantic love in the form of fellow comics creator, Chandra Free.
She has supported me through a very strange time in my life, and never stopped believing in my ability to tell a good story.
Come by the Archaia booth #2635 at comic con and see us this week, signing our various projects- Apes, Critical Millennium, and The God Machine.
Be among the first to read Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes - three weeks before it arrives in stores. Enjoy the two paintings Chandra created for the book. Meet some of the other artists in the book, including Critical Millennium artist Dan Dussault, and comics legends Jim Steranko and Dave Dorman.
Pick up Critical Millennium #4, also debuting at this show!
Chandra will be signing her epic The God Machine Hardcover for the first time on the west coast!
Come get your free Apes promo cards, enter our Apes raffle, and get your books signed.
And please, ask us questions!
We want you to be part of the magic.
Please join us...

Here's what the guy said:
I have recently been presented with a unique opportunity to offer a limited number of castings of a very rare and iconic piece. A friend of mine had this screen-used fiberglass LawGiver casting in his collection for several years. This is/was the hero casting as seen in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. It still had the tubes attached to the eye where it wept “blood” in the final scenes of the movie. Not long ago he sold his screen used casting and it was later auctioned by Profiles in History (fetching close to $30,000!).
This is the screen-used casting sold by Profiles
Prior to it leaving his hands he had it molded, as he wanted to keep a casting for his own personal collection. The mold was cast in what is known in the industry as a “waste mold” and has some air bubbles on the back of the mold. These are actually very minor and considering they are in the back of the hair, they are easy to clean-up with a little Dremel work. In addition to this, the casting has a seam running from ear-to-ear (over the top of the head) that you would have to putty/clean-up. Outside of that, the castings I have run are great and picked up all the detail of the original.
The replicas I am offering are cast in a lightweight, yet strong hand-laid fiberglass with a high quality epoxy gel-coat. These are a surprisingly large piece, measuring approximately 15" wide, 27" tall and 14" deep. There will only be 12 of these rare castings offered, directly from the hero prop.
Price is $650 plus shipping

Comic Con kicks off today (Thursday) with a POTA
comics discussion from 10 - 11 AM with the BOOM! folks as well as Tom Mason
from the Adventure days. BOOM! will have a Comic Con exclusive photo cover of
Caesar from "Rise". Plus the "Conspiracy of the POTA" novel will make it's debut
at the Archaia booth.
Fox will have their "secret" presentation from
3:15 - 4:30 PM (assumed to be a "Rise" panel plus something on Ridley Scott's
"Alien" semi-prequel "Prometheus" ).

I've seen of "RISE" looking gamy is my opinion... I think you may be being
blinded by your overwhelming enthusiasm for this film... It may or may not end
up being decent, but I'm not going to be falling all over the film because of
the APES name or the people involved in it... Either they will do a good
job or not but who they are doesn't automatically mean they'll hit it out of
the park...
"KK" had mainly all real actors, except Kong but even he was a real actor
if you want to get picky about it... The biggest "fake" thing in "KK '05"
was Jack Black trying to act... James Franco is shaping up to be "ROTPOTA's"
version of Jack Black (someone who has no business being there but somehow
lucked into the job)...

.htmlJeff, thanks for the credit, but Im always looking out for that kind of stuff since the original Conquest never felt right back when I was 12 years old in '72. Jeff is their anyway that Fox can get a responce from one of us(YOU) about what this is about and why is PG-13 a rating that was created with some of the bloodiest films at the time, and all it did was create a rating that in my view is no different than PG. Their is no PG-13, its all PG.
If this sudo-documentary is an indication of whats to come I feal like NOT going to see it because you know damn well on the dvd/bluray they will offer an uncut/Directors cut with it all intact. This was the reason I wanted an R rating. The difference between a PG-13 and R is like a G rating and an R. Who are these soccer moms and average sixpack drinking movie ignoramos's that make these decisions.
Leave the Directors version alone. The films always suffer and most of the public can sense it. Anyway Jeff I needed to vent again because this can ruin the film. Youngers want some blood and they are the biggest market, us 40 and over group were raised on the Apes films and they were anything but bloodless. All the strong violence they talk about without a smidgeon of blood rings untrue and it can kill a film. Look at the difference in the action scenes in the Lord of the Rings trilogy extended versions(nevermind the narrative improvements).
Take care Jeff, send an e-mail..HAHA, Your friend John M.

.htmlNo, I'm enthusiastic because of what I've SEEN (and linked here) and what those involved have said. Let's see... story, legit drama, committed performances (especially Andy Serkis but I haven't seen anything Franco's done in this that worries me), ambition. Sounds like the making of a good movie to me. What makes a good movie to you?
And what makes "video game looking" to you? King Kong had mostly CG characters and CG backgrounds (shot in front of green screens, shooting the island in a parking lot, recreating '30's New York). Characters running along cliffs, underneath dinosaurs. I'm not knocking the movie, I liked it, movies are illusion, but if you're going to call something a "video game" it's that, not "Rise" shot on real sets (except when they can't like the bridge) with CG being able to interact with live actors for the first time ever. It's probably easier to accept CG in a fantasy environment where almost everything is CG than the relative realism they are going for with "Rise" (even "District 9" had the fantasy element of fictional aliens to fall back on instead of realistic apes). If you don't buy the apes, fine, but at the least I wouldn't call it a video game as one might "Avatar" with CG everything.

"KK" is more "video-game" looking in your opinion, just like the scenes
I've seen of "RISE" looking gamy is my opinion... I think you may be being
blinded by your overwhelming enthusiasm for this film... It may or may not end
up being decent, but I'm not going to be falling all over the film because of
the APES name or the people involved in it... Either they will do a good
job or not but who they are doesn't automatically mean they'll hit it out of
the park...
"KK" had mainly all real actors, except Kong but even he was a real actor
if you want to get picky about it... The biggest "fake" thing in "KK '05"
was Jack Black trying to act... James Franco is shaping up to be "ROTPOTA's"
version of Jack Black (someone who has no business being there but somehow
lucked into the job)...

.htmlTo reference a recent movie, there might be blood. Obviously the marketing folks have their own needs. That's why there usually isn't anything graphic in trailers and they are "approved for all audiences". But showing what they showed in that Portuguese clip as well as showing apes being mowed down in one of the American trailers showed some courage on Fox's part in this day and age. Let's face it, they have to be comfortable that they'll make their money back, they spent a lot. People are reluctant to go to movies that look like "downers". Maybe it would be hard to sympathize with Caesar if he bit a guy's finger off.
The fact is they won't do an "R" movie over a certain budget. Under 18s are a big part of the audience that put their butts in seats and don't wait for the DVD. But I do like getting a director's cut on DVD. That's one of the great things of the DVD format. A director can shoot stuff that doesn't have a chance of being in the theatrical and it can be promoted on a DVD as a director's cut or a deleted scene. If only there were DVDs in the days of the original POTA.
But it's not just Fox. All the studios are like that. And let's be fair, it's based on what the audiences support. That's why it really was shocking to see that moment (the guy giving Caesar the finger) in such an expensive modern studio movie. And just MAYBE the film will follow through in theaters.
