I dunno. People seem pretty cynical about the CG apes and the idea of "monkeys" taking over.
Are you talking about all the snarky, negative, wiseass comments left on sites like Aintitcool?
Don't you know those are left by maladjusted young punks who've got absolutely nothing going on?
Trust me, it's gonna be all that I say.

I don't know, I think if you raise your expectations beyond what you really believe, you'll be disappointed. Maybe that's why I don't hate the Burton film despite its many flaws, as I didn't have such high expectations. I feel Rise will be moderately successful, which will be enough to allow for sequels. I don't think it'll be a spectacular success, though. Sure, my opinion is based on gut feeling, but then so is yours. The difference between us is that I hope I'm wrong. Still, I don't think it'll be a disaster or mediocre, but I won't let hope overtake me.

.html Touche, though it came up in a topic, not an auto response on an e-mail.
POTA does deal with religion. I've met some Christians who are POTA fans and at first blush it would seem like something they wouldn't like. The evolution aspect, satire on religion (including the bomb ceremony in "Beneath"). But some Christians dig it. I've heard it can be seen as a take on the Rapture a la the "Left Behind" movies (Ralph Winter, the producer of Burton's POTA, has produced "Left Behind" and other productions specifically for Christians). Or maybe it's just a fun movie. And then there's the Armando aspect.
So I'm just curious on your take. I guess it's on my mind because like I said I'm reading that book ("Divinity of Doubt" by Bugliosi).

COWBOYS & ALIENS, now this is a movie that's only going to do moderately well, and I predict lackluster reviews. Who needs this kind of high concept Hollywood crap anyway? It plays like something the main character on "Entourage" would have done. I probably will take a pass, or should that be take the pass and head 'em off at the crossroads -- and save $9 bucks?

It premiered last night at Comic Con. Sounds like
it works pretty well as a western, not so much as sci-fi. Another fat
paycheck for Spielberg's name. His name should have it's own bank
account.
Only one big summer movie left to premiere. What
could it be?

I've heard it can be seen as a take on the Rapture a la the "Left Behind" movies (Ralph Winter, the producer of Burton's POTA, has produced "Left Behind" and other productions specifically for Christians). Or maybe it's just a fun movie. And then there's the Armando aspect.

There is no mention of an Earth Goddess here. At least some scientific facts can be brought in to back up an argument of this nature. You cannot do that with religion.

From the banner and other posters it looks like the title is actually "THE Rise of the Planet of the Apes." That's a lot of "The's" for one movie.
So, what's the general attitude here as we're about three weeks away from the opening? Are you excited about seeing this movie, still wary it may suck, or you're neither here nor there about it? Even if you're only a lurker here, please chime in to this unofficial poll.

.html People are still different (even though the apes aren't people, you know) and will react differently to situations. I guess under the right circumstances anyone can be reduced to their base nature. But some are more prone to violence than others and some don't have it in them until they are pushed to their limit. Even Himmler fainted watching the killings and probably couldn't kill someone if he wanted to.
In the case of Caesar in that clip, who grew up loved by humans I think he would still have that love in him somewhere that would stop him from unnecessary killing. Like I said (based on the script I read), their goal is to cross that bridge (using the Moses analogy, instead of the Red Sea they cross the Red Bridge) and disappear. The cop is down, move on.
We'll have to wait until the full movie to see if it matches Caesar's character (just as he stops short of killing the neighbor). As for the end of "Conquest", that's different, since it was intentionally watered down (and badly done). New Caesar stopping the killing creates sympathy and since he's the main character, that's just good storytelling. The sizzle reel shows he can do in those he feels deserve it.

It's fascinating to finally have better insights after all these years about why the Underdwellers were so hostile towards Taylor, Brent & Nova, who I would have otherwise thought could have made valuable allies. It will be interesting to see if the prequel (to be released a week from this Friday in case you've been in suspended animation on the Icarus) touches upon what led to some of humanity's move underground. Perhaps the Chinese, angry about U.S. loan defaults (http://www.USDebtClock.org ) decide to bomb the USA while it's collapsing internally maybe due to a plague of Alzheimers that spreads and renders surface humans mute. I've intentionally not read any spoilers so please don't worry that I know something that any of you don't. It'd be neat to learn more about Colonel George Taylor's departed mission as
regarded by those back on Earth, though... We shall see.

In addition to the films, we'll also have some APES props and paraphernalia on display in the lobby, a local home made ice cream vendor who promises some "Ape-inspired" flavors, a table of rare cult, horror, & sci-fi DVDs for sale, prize giveaways, classic 35mm film trailers, and other surprises. Hopefully some POTA group members will be able to make it!

Well, that's great news.Lifted my mood a bit, after picking up September's SFX Mag this morning.I had expected an Apes cover but, ridiculously, they went with a Spider-Man cover for a movie that's a year away (and the trailer for which is awful!).Inside is a measly four page feature on RISE, again ridiculous for an alleged sci fi mag--Apes is one of the uber-franchises and should be the banner, cover, mega feature for every sci fi mag this month.Anyway....Franco is quoted as saying ''Now I assume the original Apes movie has kind of a cult appeal, but you look at the masks and say'I can't believe they're having serious philosphical conversations in those crazy masks!'''.What a disrespectful attitude towards one of the greatest movies ever made.I've defended Franco in the past but now can see what others have been wise to.I'm disappointed that Franco falls into the trap of trying to talk up his movie by
dissing an earlier classic.Particularly when that classic is etched onto our DNA.John, Scrolls.

Lithgow has never seen POTA but used Heston's tennis court once.
The interviewer kept asking everyone about Franco, who is shooting "The Wizard of Oz" in Detroit until December (so he will NOT be on "General Hospital"; just thought you should know).
And even when there was nothing going on the "Rise" score was being played, so it was all good. As I write this they are settling in to see the movie. History in the making.
Looks like they're running it on a loop now.

.htmlThe Australia area gets to "Rise" early (Aug. 4rth) so the movie has screened for some media there and First Showing has tried to round up some of the comments (mostly via Twitter). Sounds promising, so hopefully Fox will set up some screenings as soon as possible so the word gets out before the big weekend. So far the ear to the ground research suggests the main interest is with older males of the original Ape era. There's still a lot of selling to do with women and the younger set (modern movie selling breaks the audience into 4 "quadrants": young males, young females, older males, older females; you want to hit as many of those quadrants as possible).
With the success of WETA stuff like "Lord of the Rings" and "Avatar" this would seem to be a slam dunk but apparently not. It sounds like it has the emotional kind of story that sci-fi adverse women might like, and it's got the action and CG the youngins love, so get selling, Fox!
