I agree! The cover for Cataclysm 3 is pretty cool. It reminds me of the old Curtis Publishing magazine.

Blasphemy, I know, but I don't really care for Alex Ross in general.I agree with what you say about Sideshow influence---awkward poses. The later covers seemed to loosen up a bit, to be fair.John, Scrolls.

#4 was cool too.On balance, I prefer the Hardman covers--they sem to have a lot more 'life'.In any case, it's just great to have a regular APES comic!! John, Scrolls.

Thx for the Hardman recomendation. I'll check it out. Like you I"m delighted that we have a monthly Ape comic of pretty good quality.
The Sully storyline seemed like it was a reimagining of the original Curtis Publishing "Jason" storyline. It was very enjoyable.

I don't think they did any of those tests on any of the principal actors. The caption says Kim, but we all know how accurate those are!

I think you can make a good argument for Kim Hunter being the single biggest reason why POTA works--it's her performance that anchors the movie, because she is an Ape we immediately identify with. Her voice and eyes draw us in, even though she's a chimp and, as a result, we totally believe every other Ape's performance.Today, she's win the Oscar.John, Scrolls.

I think it's a lucky combination of a lot of things that make PLANET work.  Some things in POTA overall don't work so well.

By the time the principle actors were cast, all the makeup tests had been done and the design of the appliances set.

When they were doing the early tests for the chimpanzee makeups, they wanted Asian models because of their flatten faces, and as you can see, that's an Asian woman.  They also used Asians for the orangutans and blacks for the gorillas -- very politically incorrect these days.

It has made me wonder, though, what it would have been like if Nancy Kwan had been cast as Zira.

I was curious about John posting on this so I checkout out Amazon to see what more it had to say regarding the actual contents.

Here is the link for those what want to do the same:
www.amazon.com/Sci-Fi-Worlds-Doomwatch-Battlestar-ebook/dp/B008LVMZY4/

Note that this is only a Kindle ebook.

On a funnier note I should point out that when John wrote "ROTPOTA" I thought he was refering to "Return to the Planet of the Apes" and not "Rise", which is why I was so curious in the first place. ROTPOTA, RTTPOTA, Po-tay-to, po-tah-to, ... :)

I've always said she, as much as John Chambers, deserved the Oscar.
He made the makeup, and she made it work. McDowall's performance
was, for me, a bit too overstated, and Evan's too understated. She nailed it.
There's a thing in Film called The Secret Owner, and she Owns POTA.

Subject: Rise of the "Rise" people
.html
Next month "Dawn of the POTA" is supposed to shoot with a whole new crop of talented people in front of and behind the camera (except for the Ape Dept.). "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt has moved on but there seems to be more than meets the eye about his departure. Aintitcool reports they've heard he had "a miserable time on the 1st film and had to fight for every inch of goodness".
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/60778
Reports at the time of release suggested a happy family, with Fox (especially Tom Rothman) giving Wyatt room to go beyond just a typical action movie (though they did tinker with it after test screenings and some interesting stuff, like the ape love interest, got left on the cutting room floor). I don't know what to think about "Dawn". Does Fox have more riding on it and is thus playing it safer? Did Wyatt get dismissed because they don't want to roll the dice on interesting ideas? All will be revealed after it's too late. And so, my children, we must be patient. And wait.
Meanwhile, the U.K. film company Embankment Films has snagged a couple of projects from the "Rise" folks. Such as Andy Serkis' directorial debut "Animal Farm", which Wyatt was once attached to but some directors are more equal than others. It's being written by Caroline Thompson, who did some of the better Tim Burton films. And it's described as "a family film told from the point of view of an adorable knee-high piglet", which sounds terrible. That is not "Animal Farm", which used an animal society for political satire (and got a shout out in the original POTA). I consider "Animal Farm" the grandfather of POTA and I was excited for Serkis and Wyatt to follow up a POTA movie with that. But a family film about a cute pig? Say it isn't so, Mr. Serkis.
Embankment also has Rupert Wyatt's new project, an adaptation of the modern British classic "Birdsong". He had tried to get that made before the "Rise" assignment. Hopefully now he has the clout to see it through. The book has a long history as a wannabe film and actually the "Rise" screenwriters also worked on it (with another director). Last year it was turned into a British TV miniseries but it deserves the feature film treatment and I'm glad to see Wyatt is back on it.

That second photo is not Maurice Evans with Dan Striepeke, but may actually be Paul Williams.  It's definitely from the era of BATTLE because of the fuller banged orangutan wig.  I think it could be from an appearance on the old Mike Douglas show, but my betting is that photo dates from 1973.

The Sully story has a similar feel to Marvel's Future History Chronicles---there's even a big ship, later. But CATACLYSM, especially with issues 5 and 6, in my opinion, feels totally distinct and is really carving its own place in the mythos.I think it's a great read.John, Scrolls.

The other one (the "Sully" storyline) was pretty bad, I don't know why I even bothered buying it after seeing I wouldn't like it afer the first few issues... If you didn't read that one, you didn't miss much...

And speaking of the APES comic(s) with the "Sully" storyline, Daryl Gregory from BOOM! has to have had blinders on...  I say that because in the newest issue of SCROLLS, when asked about if Carlos Magno's was influenced by the Tim Burton apes, he says he doesn't see much "Burton" in Magno's apes... Is he for real?!?

Whatculture! provides an interview with "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt, including why he's not coming back. He sez: "I had a take on the sequel which didn't marry with the studio's". But there seems to be no hard feelings and Wyatt is thankful the studio gave him the opportunity (ape-ortunity?). As for the newbie, he adds: "Matt Reeves is a filmmaker, and a very good one". He also talks about his next project "Birdsong" and other things.

He has destroyed himself and his world over petty, transitory, ideology (capitalism vs. communism, we assume...).

The idea I like is "Did anything ever come from all that talk?"
Well, maybe, but it wasn't anything good.  So much so
that Earths remaining human inhabitants now don't talk.
And even Nova can't bring herself to even say Taylor's
name, unless it's a matter of life & death. Speaks volumes.
