|
.html I went to the collectibles convention last Sunday at the Shrine Auditorium that featured POTA guests. Not really a convention so much as a marketplace. No Q & As or anything, just expensive stuff in a kind of "Ebay Live". But it was good to see some of the POTA folks I've known. Booth Colman, Ron Harper, Bobby Porter, Lou Wagner, Lee Delano, Austin Stoker, H. M. Wynant, France Nuyen were there. Linda Harrison was a no show and Natalie Trundy made a rare convention appearance.
I asked some of them their thoughts on "Rise of the POTA" and "Argo". None seemed particularly blown away by "Rise". Booth felt it had a good script (but not so much "Argo"; he didn't think the dialogue sounded natural) while Ron sez the ape action was too over the top (ape attacking helicopter, etc.). Bobby Porter loved "Argo", he and John Chambers were working on a movie together when John was involved in the Argo scheme to free hostages. Bobby was a lot of fun. I hadn't seen him since StarCon '96 and he's one of the nicest and most enthusiastic folks you'd want to meet.
Austin Stoker received a royalty for the "Battle" clip in "Argo" so he wasn't complaining. I asked him what he thought of the remake of the movie he starred in, "Assault on Precinct 13" and he just said they had way to much fire power to make the plot work (the movie in reality would've ended much sooner). Chalk up another one for "over the top". I guess that's what Hollywood does best these days. But it also provides us with terrific actors to talk to. Not a bad way to kick off POTA50. <.html

It's a movie I'm very familiar with, even posted an image here that shows the same area of the Fox Ranch where PLANET's hunt scene would be filmed nearly thirty years later.

.html"No one was going to make this movie feel and exist as truthfully as Matt did."
- - - J. J. Abrams on "Cloverfield"
By the time 2013 ends, it looks like Matt Reeves will have directed a POTA movie. Who dat? I first heard of Reeves as a seminal filmmaking pal of J. J. Abrams. I was a big "Alias" fan back in the day and Reeves was a part of Abrams' bio and even appeared in an "Alias" DVD extra. Abrams and Reeves met as teens through their love of making amateur movies. They were both in a filmmaking contest that was written about in the L. A. Times ("Beardless Wonders of Film Making" by Robert Young, 1982). The article brought them to the attention of Steven Spielberg, who hired the two of them to repair his own old amateur movies he made as a teen. These years are chronicled in a DVD extra for Abrams' film "Super 8" ("The Dream Behind Super 8").
The cool thing is they continued to be friends and important to each other as filmmakers. At USC film school, Reeves met Brian Burk and introduced him to Abrams; Burk became Abrams' main producer and co-founder of his famous production company Bad Robot. Abrams produced Reeves' first feature film (and then produced his second 12 years later). They created the show "Felicity" together, Abrams' first dive into TV. So how come J. J. Abrams is so well known and Matt Reeves, well, not so much?
When they started out, Reeves was the director of the duo. Reeves directed and J. J. produced (as Jeffrey Abrams) the 1996 David Schwimmer vehicle "The Pallbearer" (this was the "Friends" era). It's about a guy who is mistaken as the friend of a just deceased former classmate and is asked to be a pallbearer at the guy's funeral (even though he doesn't remember him). He winds up getting romantic with dead guy's overbearing mother, though he really wants Gwyneth Paltrow (wouldn't you?). It's a sweet romantic comedy with just the right touch of melancholy, and Reeves did a good job on his first feature. The movie got some decent reviews (Roger Ebert compared it to "The Graduate": http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19960503/REVIEWS/605030307/1023
) but it didn't get noticed at the box office. Needless to say, Schwimmer did not become a movie star and Reeves' career didn't take off.
Next they tried TV (which would be kismet for Abrams). Together they created and produced the WB show "Felicity" and Reeves directed the first two shows (giving him the distinction of being the first person to ever direct an episode of a J. J. Abrams TV show). "Felicity" did well, lasting 4 years. In the meantime, Abrams created "Alias", which really launched his career in more ways than one. He started his company Bad Robot, grabbed composer Michael Giacchino and never looked back. "Alias" begat the smash show "Lost". "Alias" made fans of Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise, the latter hiring Abrams to direct his first feature film, the high profile "Mission: Impossible 3" (basically "Alias: the Movie" and featuring Felicity herself, Keri Russell). As a movie director he became the golden boy of Paramount Studios, who handed him the keys to their important "Star Trek" franchise. Meanwhile, his TV
empire continued; currently he has on the air "Revolution", Person of Interest" and "Fringe" (until January 18th).
So what happened to Matt Reeves? Dunno, presumably the classic "development hell". He directed some episodes of TV, but curiously after "Felicity" he never directed one of Abrams shows, even though they would seem to be the kind of shows a director would love to do. Instead they grabbed him for their monster movie "Cloverfield". Conceived by Abrams as an American Godzilla with a twist, it would be the classic "monster destroying a city" but seen through the lens of a camcorder (Abrams would kind of do his own version set in the earlier world of 8 mm with "Super 8"). Abrams has said he chose Reeves to direct it because of his talent for bringing believability to a story (important when the event is supposed to be actually happening on the other end of a camcorder). By then Abrams was known for stories with twists and turns and surprises (exemplified by "Lost"), what he called "mystery box" storytelling (Rod Serling
is his personal hero). And the promotion of "Cloverfield" seemed to run with that idea, building curiosity around the movie. The ad campaign (with it's signature image of a decapitated Statue of Liberty) did much to turn "Cloverfield" into a hit and put Matt on the map in 2008, 12 years after "The Pallbearer".
http://whatculture.com/film/1-18-08-a-look-back-at-cloverfield-five-years-later.php
Reeves was offered the Americanized remake of the Swedish vampire film "Let the Right One In", based on a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Reeves' resulting movie, "Let Me In", has been criticized for just being a copy of a terrific Swedish film (not unlike what happened with the "Girl With the Dragon Tatoo" situation). In fact, Reeves originally turned down the movie for the same reason (it's already a good movie, why redo it?). But after reading the book he felt a personal connection to the story and saw how he could tell it differently. Reeves looks at it this way: "The fun of genre movies is that you can smuggle in something completely real under the surface of the vampire or monster metaphor". Reeves saw it as a coming of age story (and wanted the bullying to be scarier than the vampires), so he told it from the boy's point-of-view in a "Rear Window" approach. Thus some characters in the book and original movie got
shortchanged. He got the blessing of the book's author (a "Cloverfield" fan) and made it his own, including references that had stayed with him from his own youth (Reagan's "Evil Empire" speech, the Now and Later candy jingle). In this "Twilight" age when vampires are a dime a dozen (but make a lot more than that at the box office!), Reeves created a powerful film. For those who want to judge Reeves' chops, it's the film to see.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSG_vNjiFZg
It's interesting how far Reeves and Abrams have come together, and to note their most recent films are very personal takes on their own adolescence when they first met, but told through fantasy with a nod to the masters of that time. Abrams' "Super 8" (set in 1979) is of course a tribute to Steven Spielberg, who started the two on their professional way. "Let Me In" (set in 1983) reminds me very much of Stephen King (though I'm not an expert on King of horror movies). King himself considered "Let Me In" his favorite movie of 2010 and "the best American horror film in the last 20 years". The book's author considered it worth the double dip, saying it "puts the emotional pressure in different places and stands firmly on it's own legs. Like the Swedish movie it made me cry but not at the same points. (It) is a dark and violent love story, a beautiful piece of cinema and a respectful rendering for which I am grateful".
http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/motion-captured/posts/novelists-stephen-king-and-ajvide-lindqvist-embrace-let-me-in
Even with it's low budget, "Let Me In" was a big flop, so it was back to the drawing board for Reeves. He's always seemed to have bad luck getting stuff made (3 films in 17 years), but he seems in demand to develop movies and TV. In 2012 Fox signed him to create some TV. Fox TV chairman Gary Newman sez: "(Reeves) has been one of the top 2 - 3 drama director names every pilot season that every studio goes to with their best projects ...(because) Matt loves developing characters, a form of storytelling that is found more in TV than any other media".
http://www.deadline.com/2012/09/matt-reeves-inks-overall-deal-with-20th-tv/
Fox seems to promote from within, so maybe it's no surprise that when things didn't work out with "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt, Reeves became the frontrunner to direct the sequel. Which is why we're here. Reeves hasn't really generated much enthusiasm as the announced director. A lot of people felt "Rise" was a special film that made POTA a player again, and they're giving it to the guy that made "Cloverfield"?! So what will Reeves bring to the table? Since Reeves was announced Oct. 1st there's been almost nothing about what the sequel will be. Andy Serkis has met with Reeves and seems to like him and his ideas ("Rise" was a big moment for Serkis so I don't think he's going taking the sequel lightly). All we really have to go on are his films and his comments (I've listened to his DVD commentaries and I like the guy). I think he considered "Cloverfield" a technical exersize (important stuff to know
if you're going to do a movie with CG apes). "The Pallbearer" and "Let Me In" seem more personal to him. Both are about lonely nebbishes who own Rubik's Cubes and grab for desperate love (whether the mother of a deceased classmate or a vampire). Loneliness and the need for connection seem to be at the core of Reeves' movies thus far. Will Caesar find it's lonely at the top and fall for a human (it certainly would be fun seeing him tackle a Rubik's Cube; maybe Rocket could solve it and hold it up in triumph)?
Also interesting is that Abrams and Reeves share in common composer Michael Giacchino (main squeeze of Abrams and Pixar, Oscar-winner for "Up"). Probably Giacchino will do the POTA score (here he sez how much he digs Reeves: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/46847 ). We should leave a little wiggle room for the return of Patrick Doyle, but so far there's a new director, new writer, new (human cast), new production designer (James Chinlund, "The Avenger") and new costume designer (Melissa Brunning, Reeves' "Let Me In") so a new composer doesn't seem a stretch. I know Giacchino is an "Apes" fan (he told me he loves all of it, the movies, the TV show, the cartoons), I know that Abrams is an "Apes" fan (here he is with the DVD Caesar head:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/16/magazine/16wwln_domains.html" ). But is Reeves a fan? In "Let Me In", Owen wears monkey bandages and an astronaut jacket and lives in Los Alamos (birthplace of the atomic bomb). Maybe that's a sign?
Did they let the right one in? Too soon to tell. But as far as I'm concerned they let an interesting one in, someone who has been around a while and might just be ready to kick some ass. Maybe POTA will be the beneficiary. Could Reeves be the next J. J. Abrams? At the very least it's kind of neat that two friends who met as teens, and worked on Spielberg's own teenage movies together, are now at the helm of the two big sci-fi franchises of the '60's, "Star Trek" and POTA. <.html

I guess there's a pattern to Roddy McDowall movies. As a child he makes a movie with highly improbable Welsh accents, then as an adult he makes a movie with highly improbable talking apes -- with English accents! Somehow there just has to be away to just blame it on Fox -- which is now owned by a "person" with an Australian accent. <.html

The APES concept isn't about logic, and I hope the makers of DAWN aren't going to get hung up on plausibility -- because that's a mistake. Just don't make it silly. Keep your eye on that.

Seeing that Rise was set on Earth while Burton's film was clearly set, for the main part, on another planet, then it's not that surprising that that viewpoint is held by the wider population.

Well, for me it's far from perfect (mixed film for me), but seeing that it's wholly set on Earth, it'd naturally have the feel that it belongs to the original series of films (not that I think it fits, though).
> Not ALL of Burton's movie is another planet--isn't the 'twist' ending meant to be Earth? John,Scrolls.
>
Sure, but as I said in my post, the main bulk of the film is set on another planet. It starts off in space around the Solar System, then a few minutes later Leo crashes on another planet (which is clearly another planet), then the rest of the film, bar the last few minutes, is set on an alien world. I'd say about 85% or so of the film is on another planet, while the "twist" on Earth is seen as fairly throwaway in relation to the rest of the story. It's clearly not meant to directly relate to the originals, nor was it ever claimed to be so, hence the "re-imagining"/reboot label.
Now, there had been confusing signals from the makers of Rise when it came out as to whether it's a reboot or a prequel (I think it's a reboot), and you'll find this confusion reflected in many of the comments about Rise on the 'Net. The flight to Mars doesn't help matters, either. The thing is, I don't think such confusion was about at the time of the Burton film, so your claim has to take that into account. Even though Rise doesn't fit when you think about it, it could seem to fit for those who have a rough idea about the original films.
I'll concede, though, that the majority feel that Rise is in spirit nearer to the original series in most people's eyes, but then I do think there are other reasons than just the quality of the Burton film for that (although that's also a consideration).

Well, here's a case of six degrees of separation.... BUGSY MALONE was shot by Michael Seresin, and that movie was a work of Paul Williams, who was in BATTLE.

Blind adulation. It negates one from recognizing simple mistakes such as a
typographical error. For example, it's commonly seen among J.R.R. Tolkien fans
when someone uses 'Orks' instead of 'Orcs'.

Scott Z. Burns was the screenwriter who worked with director Rupert Wyatt on "Dawn" last summer just before Wyatt left the project. Fox grabbed Matt Reeves and brought in another, Mark Bomback (a Fox fave who had also worked on "Rise") and apparently they're off in a different direction. Scott sez: "Rupert Wyatt and I worked on a draft last summer that I think we were both really excited about and he went into Fox and they seemed to like it, they wanted a lot of changes and they sort of parted ways over those changes. Then management shifted at Fox, they brought in a new director, I think the new director wanted a new writer and I don't know how much of what we did and I wrote is ongoing. It's kind of heartbreaking because I really loved what we were trying to say with that movie so I hope some of it survives or that they come up with something a lot better".
He sez he tried to give the script more interesting human characters than "Rise" had. "I was loving it, it was a really fun world to play in. It's really heartbreaking when these things sort of leave you and you're not even sure why".
Anyway, Fox wanted to take it in another direction and apparently Matt Reeves had the key. Was Wyatt right or was Fox right? That remains to be seen. All I can say is from listening to Matt's DVD commentaries he seems to have a good head on his shoulders and he's not signing on to mess it up. No one had faith in "Rise" and Wyatt turned it into a big hit and an acclaimed movie to boot. To replace that director puts a lot of pressure on Reeves to deliver. He has to knock it out of the park or all he's going to hear is Wyatt should've directed it. Eventually we'll hear what Wyatt's ideas were and decide for ourselves who was right.

.html It was supposed to be a "trilogy" but all bets are off now with a new director, new writer and the main Fox architect of "Rise" (Tom Rothman) gone. We're in uncharted territory. Will it connect to the original films? Even Carnac the Magnificent doesn't know now.

Are we right to assume FOX is doing an Apes trilogy? If the franchise is back, why stop at three---I'm up for 12!! If we're on a journey to the year 3955, give or take, then episode 2 really needs to make a leap if we're going to bridge the time gap without time travel.I'd love to think we've got decades of new APES to look forward to.John, Scrolls <.html

.htmlPHEW! I was beginning to be worried (had so many bad experiences with Apes comics in my life!),I see there is a change of artist--maybe that explains slight delay. Not familiar with Benjamin Dewey....but I'm about to be! Thanks.John, Scrolls.

.html I've been finding it the first full week of the month in the USA. I think it gets released on Wednesday.
Has anyone noticed that the Alex Ross artwork seems to be based on the Sideshow figures? I wish he wouldn't do that.

.htmlBlasphemy, I know, but I don't really care for Alex Ross in general.I agree with what you say about Sideshow influence---awkward poses. The later covers seemed to loosen up a bit, to be fair.John, Scrolls.
