It's always the same story w/3D. "It's not your father's 3D". It's fine for amusement parks but let us stick with 2D for the ape films. 2D has worked pretty well for the last 100 years.
I don't know about most here, but I avoid 3D like the plague. First off, I don't like paying any more to see a movie in a theatre than I already do -- and I wish I could pay less. I already have to wear glasses -- because I'm almost 54 years old -- so I have to wear the 3D glasses over them. I feel like a dumb ass wearing those cheap Buddy Holly style plastic crap glasses anyway. And, finally, the movie is unacceptably darker in 3D than in 2D. IT SUCKS!
But Fox has announced that DAWN will be in 3D. Thankfully, it will also be in 2D. I'll be going to the 2D showing.

Yeah, I agree. A naked ape toy is about as appealing as ordering a naked human doll.
I sure hope the apes wear clothes in DAWN. I don't care if they speak like Maurice Evans or Honey Boo Boo, but please Fox, put some clothes on them.

In May's SFX Mag, in the 'My sci fi' celebrity section, wheelchair basketball player and bronze medal paralympian Ade Adeptian answers the favourite sf question thusly: 'My favourite would have to be the original POTA.It had everything- space and time travel, politics and the clasic scene with the destroyed Statue of Liberty.Oh and power-mad, crazed talking apes--you couldn't ask for anything more'.
That's a slam dunk, Ade!! John, Scrolls.
Hey, that's great. Now let's hope the next time we hear from him it's not because he shot his girlfriend to death. <.html

This is not the 3D from the 50s--80s. 3D NOW is done to make you feel like you are part of the movie, not like things are coming at you.
We should have a poll on that one: Does 3D make you feel like you're part of a movie?
I doubt most would agree. It certainly has never done that for me. I've always just watched movies, never been part of them. I've certainly been glued to the screen on some riviting movies, at least on first viewing and even on a little black & white TV back in the '60s and '70s, but part of the movie? Never, and 3D actually makes me feel further from a movie, not closer.

I was on one website yesterday when this news broke that asked, "Is this becoming 'Planet of the Humans'?" since it seems all the casting news is for actors that will play human parts. I guess they expect something like Bruce Willis being cast as a gorilla. Something like that probably isn't going to happen. All the apes will be played by simple working actors and not "stars." Stars, for the most part, don't cover themselves in CGI and act like apes. <.html

I usually just go 2D, unless a film is actually
shot in 3D (I went to "Transformers 3" only because it was actually shot in 3D).
There's only a handful of live action movies that have shot in 3D ("Avatar",
"Tranformers 3", "The Hobbit", maybe that's it). Fox is shooting the next
"X-Men" in 3D, so maybe they will also do "Apes" that way. Even if they don't, I
will make an exception and see "Dawn" in 3D even if it's post-converted as most
3D movies are. Just to see POTA in 3D. I'm as tech crazy as the next moviegoer
(I saw "The Hobbit" in 48 frames) but mostly post-converted 3D isn't worth the
extra money to me.

While I still believe 3D is mostly a marketing gimmick and I want as little to do it as possible, I will admit that it does have that curiosity factor shared by amusement park rides that use 3D. I've read that the 1939 WIZARD OF OZ is going to be re-released to theatres in a 3D conversion later this year. I'm interested in seeing that but only out of curiosity, not because I think it'll make the movie any better. With DAWN, I haven't that same curiosity. <.html

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/robin_williams/
I also posted a while back of his admiration for "Rise of the POTA" (12/7/11, though the article seems to be gone now). He said, "(Caesar is) one of the most vivid characters I've seen in recent film history, and it's done with CG but with a person behind it, driving it, which is a wonderful combination of technology and humanity. Even though it's an ape, (Serkis) gives it such depth and it's just powerful".
It's fun finding celebs who are "Apes" fans, and let's face it, we all love Robin Williams. I do, you do and she does. So how about it? Should Robin do a POTA movie? He's a famous comedian but he's also a heck of an actor (studied at Julliard, etc.). Would he stick out too much? He'd probably be the most famous person to appear in a POTA movie since Heston. The next POTA movie is Serkis' chance to shine and get star billing; he's earned it. I think Williams is at a point where he doesn't need star billing and would be happy to work in an ensemble, maybe a smaller role, if he likes the project.
We're getting to the point where the casting announcements will be coming soon (with a March start date) so I'm just throwing that out there for some fun. <.html

As the casting announcements begin, I notice some are wondering if the new actors are playing humans or apes. Judging from "Rise" I think it's safe to say the "known" actors (like Jason Clarke and Kodi Smit-McPhee) are playing humans. In "Rise" the apes were cast from stunt people (or at least actors with a talent for physical movement). And they seemed lower on the cast totem pole. Even Andy Serkis came up last among the main actors (credited as "and Andy Serkis"). Reportedly Serkis is the star of the sequel, and getting a great payday, but what about the other ape actors, such as Terry Notary as Rocket, Chris Gordon as Koba and Karin Konoval as Maurice the orangutan (she also played the clerk who argued with Franco about court dates in "Rise")? Will their stars "rise" since they are actors returning to a hit franchise? Or will they still be seen as glorified stunt people? If they get more
billing priority, how will that affect who is cast as humans? Since the movie is reportedly about a "group of scientists" we might have some more interesting human casting announcements to come.
Old school POTA didn't seem to have trouble getting top actors to don the makeup but such actors don't seem as eager to be covered over by CG. It would be interesting if "Dawn of the POTA" is a groundbreaker in advancing credit for CG performers. Really, there hasn't been a live-action movie with star billing for a CGer; I guess the female lead in "Avatar". I don't count "Tin Tin" since that was an animated film. We'll see where the cards land but for now I think the big "Dawn" casting announcements will be for human roles. <.html

He had met with director Matt Reeves that day (2/5/13) and sez "we had a very exciting conversation about where the story's going. I think it's going to be an amazing film. Really incredible".
He also places filming in the "2nd quarter of the year". Last I heard it was scheduled for March but I guess if it goes from late March to Juneish that would qualify as 2nd quarter. Anyway, it sounds like they are still working on the script/story. That's the latest from the "Dawn" Patrol.

I've read that people still alive that knew Jacobs say that the characterization of him in that movie is entirely inaccurate. I rented it, watched about half, then got bored and didn't finish it. <.html

Wow---that is fascinating viewing. Andy is the new Roddy. I am so excited about DAWN and what's coming. If you could argue that BENEATH was pivotal in making a lasting franchise, you could say the same for DAWN. Great link,Jeff. John,Scrolls.
Only time will tell. I'm very nervous about DAWN. I think the possibilty is much greater with this movie than with RISE that it could be a mess. I think Rupert Wyatt was right in that Fox may be rushing the production. Filming isn't supposed to start until May and will probably wrap in late July. I suppose this gives them enough time to do all the SFX/CGI stuff. Who knows? But my real problem is the director, Matt Reeves. I wasn't at all impressed with CLOVERFIELD (Oh, please, no shaky camera stuff in DAWN!), and think it was rather ill-conceived, but I know that Fox (whomever the suits are there at the moment) are really running the show with this franchise, something that Wyatt confirmed recently when he said that he really didn't enjoy entirely making RISE because of disagreements with the studio. My fear is that there are going to be too many cooks making this stew. I wasn't impressed much with
Reeves' LET ME IN either, so I just don't know how strong this guy is.
I just don't know about DAWN. But, it's early days yet.

Knowing Fox's history with this franchise,...Each story was weakened by budget sqeezing from the first story in 1968, to the last story in 1975.
Many of you here know this.
Just hoping that the studio don't start sqeezing this one too hard
because of the money the last one made, so now..." Let make better for less!" Never fails! Take a really nice series and distroy it

| Subject: 3978 or 3955? |
.htmlI know many fans get very upset about this blatant mistake in Beneath and the other sequels. I've always tended to view it as a minor continuity error of little consequence. However, I have done some investigating recently and found something interesting.
Reading the final shooting script for Planet available on Hunter's site (https://pota.goatley.com/scripts/pota_finalshoot1.pdf), it doesn't say 3978 either, instead it says 3975. The date was most likely changed on set the day they were shooting.
Assuming that Paul Dehn worked from this script, rather than the actual film in the days before home video, his first draft (https://pota.goatley.com/scripts/pota_revisited_first_01.pdf) uses the 3975 date.
However, the final shooting script for Beneath (https://pota.goatley.com/scripts/pota_beneath_final.pdf) changes it to 3955.
I've always assumed this was an error on Dehn's part. It could still be something that happened by accident during the re-write process. But, I do have a suspicion that it might have been changed on purpose for reasons unknown. Maybe James Fransicus had trouble saying the word seventy? Maybe 55 was Mort Abrams lucky number? Who knows? <.html

.html "Jack & the Beanstalk" or whatever it's called is the latest in a long line of studio approved "who gives an f"? flops to come down the pike. Those of us who have been waiting a decade for a GOOD POTA movie were surprised that Fox almost reluctantly released "Rise" with a reported $100 million budget (Jack and the B.S.stalk cost $200 million). I remember saying over the past decade that POTA was Fox's "Spiderman" if they could get it together. "Rise"
went on to make more than many other more celebrated franchises. It's no secret that studio execs are overpaid bean counters but once in a while I just explode and have to lash out at them. It remains to be seen what "Dawn of the POTA" will be like after they got rid of most of the people who made "Rise" a "surprise" hit (not a surprise to me once I heard the acclaim from the set and the actors; my take is fully recorded in this group's archives).
How many studio execs does it take to change a light bulb? 50; one to change it and 49 to greenlight it. <.html

.htmlIt was a bumpy road to convince Fox to finance POTA but I think it's probable it would never have happened without the late Richard Zanuck. Of course there's a lot more to his career than that and it's about time there was a documentary about the late studio exec/producer. On May 8th Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will debut documentary "Don't Say No Until I Finish Talking" about Zanuck, directed by Laurent Bouzereau and produced by Steven Spielberg, whose movie career took off under Zanuck ("The Sugarland Express", "Jaws"). There will be lots of people jawing about Zanuck. That includes Tim Burton, who started his professional relationship with him when Zanuck returned to POTA; they had a steady partnership for over 10 years. Lots of history to cover.

Subject: [pota] Andy Serkis update on "Dawn of the POTA"
Andy Serkis was at the Visual Effects Society Awards as a presenter a week ago and gave an update on the new POTA sequel.
That's the latest from the "Dawn" Patrol.

.html They've said it deals with a group of scientists in San Francisco, and since "Rise" was also set in San Francisco I think it will stay there. It sounds like they are using New Orleans because it's good bang for the buck. Vancouver stood in for San Fran in "Rise". It's set 15 years after "Rise", which took place in 2016 according to the newspaper ("Lost in Space !"). So that means "Dawn takes place in...(counts on his fingers) 2031.

But at the same time he's now done the "Harry Potter"s and the Dark Knights, so he's a known actor. He can be choosey, so that he's doing POTA is a good thing. It suggests the script, or at least the concept, is a good one.

Didn't Gary Oldman just recently (2010) play a similar part in the post-apocalyptic THE BOOK OF ELI?
Oldman is a good actor, but I think he does too many things, like playing Dr. Smith in the reboot failure LOST IN SPACE (Oh, the pain!), but maybe, like Roddy McDowall, he just "loves to work."
Anyway, I hope DAWN isn't anything like THE BOOK OF ELI. <.html

I didn't think Zanuck really GOT POTA, but it looks like he was one of
the good ones.
I guess the rest of the Hollywood Producers are some sort of Les Grossman

out of Tropic Thunder. He's father certainly was one of a kind. We'll
never see his like again. <.html <.html

I don't think we're going to hear of major actors cast as apes. I suspect the apes will still be pretty much as they were at the end of RISE, but with some monosyllabic words thrown in.
Anyway.... I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I'd like to avoid knowing too much about this movie before I actually go see it. I kind of ruined RISE for myself knowing too much about it. High expectations only leads to disappointment, more often than not.

I agree. Just the bit of the set you see tells you it's not from any of the films.
I think, but I'm not sure, that the Asian man pictured with Heston on the set of PLANET is the guy who sculpted the Lawgiver and the background masks. I forget his name, but he's famous for working on many science fiction productions.

Meanwhile, Mark Bomback has put a Koba picture on his twitter page, suggesting he's still the screenwriter as they head to production (and that perhaps Koba plays a significant role in "Dawn", as if we didn't know). Bomback also did some script work on "Rise" (he's credited with Caesar drawing his window in his cage) but Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver got the screen credit. Now they are on "Jurassic Park 4" (also scheduled for Summer 2014) so probably they are less involved in "Dawn" (though still producers, which they deserve, since none of this would've happened without them). <.html
