The leading lady of "Dawn of the POTA" is turning
>CENSORED!< today. Her big bang was starring as the title character on
"Felicity", created and produced, directed, written, etc. by Matt Reeves and J. J. Abrams (who now, between them, run POTA, "Star Trek" and "Star Wars"). She's continued to do well, though she admits that until POTA she's never been summer blockbuster movie material (she was runner up to play Lois Lane in "Superman Returns"). Currently her big role is starring in the delicious, acclaimed TV show "The Americans" on FX.

This is the closest I could find to Classic POTA: Keri in a cornfield.

Here's Keri "Dawn of the POTA" Russell directed by Matt "Dawn of the POTA" Reeves in a scene from "Felicity" (written by J. J. Abrams):

  Happy Birthday!

Subject: Trailer detective work
.html
.html
In spring, a young man's fancy turns to a new POTA trailer. When are we getting one? Well, Fox released the first official "X-Men" trailer today (not counting the Comic Con one), and since Fox is also releasing "Dawn of the POTA" maybe we have some clues. This trailer release is pretty much exactly 2 months before "X-Men: Days of Future Past" comes out (May 23, the former "Dawn" stomping ground), so maybe we can look for the first "Dawn" trailer mid-Mayish? Do the math, "Dawn" bows on July 11th, though I still think they should release it on July 4rth. I know, shut up. I will again predict Fox will hold it a little longer and release the trailer the week "X-Men" comes out. Fox has a lot riding on "X-Men" and getting our first blow away look at "Dawn" would be an added incentive to see it in the theater.
Add to that the fact that "Dawn" was pushed back to July because of the >CENSORED!<load of FX work and giving the trailer an extra week or so might be a good idea. The longer they wait, the more groovy stuff they can put in it. So it's elementary, my dear Watson. The trailer on May 20thish and the movie on July (*cough!* 4rth *cough!*) 11th.
Empire magazine released this behind the scenes pic. It's cool but there's only so much "humans as apes" we can look at. With only 3 months or so to go, I have an ape-tite for the real thing (or the CG thing, you know what I mean).

  And here's the "X-Men" trailer:

Subject: Will POTA kick Wahlberg's ass?
.html

Will it be Revenge of the Apes this summer? CinemaCon, the annual bash the movie studios throw for exhibitors, hits this week in Las Vegas. Fox has the stage Thursday but yesterday wuz Paramount, which has some Mark "POTA2001" Wahlberg-centric pics coming. Included in that is Dawn of the POTA's main competish, "Transformers 4". Now we all know there's some bad blood between Wahlberg and POTA, specifically POTA fans. Some didn't dig the celluloid Mark and Burton laid down a decade ago. For POTA to beat "Transformers" at the box office would be a symbolic bloody nose for the former Leo Davidson. Especially with Mark crowing yesterday that "Transformers" is the greatest franchise ever (which is his job, but still).
So can POTA take him? The last "Transformers" passed $1 billion but, you know, tastes change and "Transformers" is getting long in the tooth. POTA is the underdog but on the rise. Most people would have to give the advantage to "Transformers" but if POTA topped it that would be quite a feat, something to write home to Zira about. We'll see (*cough* July 4rth *cough*).
Paramount also has Rupert "Rise of the POTA" Wyatt's "The Gambler" starring Wahlberg for the fall and they think it could be an Oscar contender.

The first footage from "Dawn of the POTA" since Comic Con 8 months ago was shown at Cinema Con today. Cinema Con (Las Vegas) is for the movie theater folks to get them to dig what they're going to be showing. It's actually put on by NATO (the National Association of Theater Owners). Back in the day Arthur Jacob cut together some footage for "Planet" and "Beneath" for NATO that became popular bootleg items. Here's the "Beneath" one:
So 45 years later or so, it was Dawn of the POTA's turn. And it sounds just fantastic, especially the description of a scene that sounds like it features our old friend Koba. Here's what reviewer (and Apes fan) Devin Faraci had to say:
Comicbookmovie.com sez there wuz a trailer shown as well. If that's true, we may see it soon (though the Comic Con trailer took 5 months to reach the peasants):  http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/nailbiter111/news/?a=96914
Also, Andy Serkis will receive the Vanguard Award at Cinema Con tonight. It helps that it's taking place at Caesar's Palace. Here he talks about "Dawn" a bit and his take on Caesar:

Finally, Empire magazine released more behind the scenes photos (without the apes put in):

It was a big day for Andy Serkis yesterday at Caesar's Palace in Vegas (baby!). Besides the reveal of new "Dawn" footage he received the Vanguard Award. Needless to say, folks wanted to talk to him about the footage they saw. Here's a couple of interviews that cover a lot of ground. Personally, I consider this stuff background, not spoilers, but your mileage may vary. He also reveals he's seen a rough cut and calls it "a really powerful film and I think important film about identity, about tribalism". And also: "This film is very much about family, about how and to what lengths one goes to to defend one's family without being destructive to others". He loves that "it's completely different" from "Rise".

This one talks about the society the apes have built (remember that song about San Francisco and flowers in you hair?):

      And here's a video interview:

     Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Today (3/30) marks 75 years since the first appearance of The Batman. Over the years, Batman and POTA have crossed paths behind the scenes, from the '60's TV show (Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Victor Buono, H. M. Wynant, Woodrow Parfrey, Linda Harrison, William Smith, Buck Kartalian, Army Archerd, Lee Delano, early Nova Angelique Pettyjohn) to Tim Burton to Gary Oldman ("The Dark Knight" trilogy) in "Dawn". Batman was a big part of the '60's culture during the original POTA era (both produced by Fox) and, well, it's still a big part of the culture now that "Apes" is back. They were Megos together back before everybody and his brother had an action figure. And I dig Batman too. So happy anniversary, Mr. Wayne!

Fox has announced there's going to be a preview of "Dawn of the POTA" tonight during "The Walking Dead". So "Walk", don't run, to AMC tonight. Some who saw the Cinema Con footage have compared it to "The Walking Dead" so maybe it's fitting.

Here's the most POTAey tune I've heard from Giacchino, "Awed and Shocked" from "Lost":

And while we're at it, here's a few more "Lost" gems; "Lost" might be the project he's most identified with (it certainly had the most music and albums).

I'm not sure what this means, but Blu-ray.com is indicating a BD of the original is coming out on June 17.

Hopefully this is a remaster, not just a re-packaging, using the restoration we read about back at the end of 2010.

If not, then damn you all to hell, Fox Home Video.

Wonder Con hits Anaheim, CA. on Easter weekend and Fox has big plans for it. "Dawn" director Matt Reeves, stars Andy Serkis, Keri Russell and Gary Oldman are scheduled to attend. I'm considering going but conventions are such a pain these days (an expensive pain). Sardine life sucks. But like Comic Con, we'll probably get some new info and maybe they'll drop a new trailer. Fox Day is 4/19, the day before Easter.

.html.htmlWhile you might be right that they should reissue the TV series (but only if they go all out and actually include some extras), Amazon.com isn't always the best way to determine rarity/demand of product(s)...

For instance, I recently bought a book directly from the source for the original cover price, ($15.95) and sellers on Amazon were asking upwards of $300.00, for a book that can still be found for a LOT better price.

I've bought from Amazon, but like I said, with a little looking around, you can often find comparable or better prices (depending on the item too of course...) I wouldn't take their prices on the APES television series as "gospel"... Not saying you are/were, but sometimes people see an asking price and automatically think that's what an item is "worth" or that an extravagant price automatically means "rarity"..

        .html
$ 1 billion seems like a lot, but that's only because you don't think big. As blockbuster movies go, it's definitely mucho dinero but doable for certain movies. Has "Dawn of the POTA" got what it takes? Well, Box Office Mojo has looked over the 2014 contenders and considers "Dawn" "very unlikely" to cross that marker (it would have to earn over double what "Rise" did). In fact, the only one that seems a possibility is "Transformers 4", Dawn's main competish. But expectations are made to be broken, so when "Dawn" passes $1 billion and sez, "Take that, Mark Wahlberg!", it will taste even sweeter.

The current issue of "Entertainment Weekly" includes mention of a certain character's cameo. I don't consider this a Grade A spoiler but if you're particularly sensitive to knowing anything about the movie, adios.

James Franco's Will makes a posthumous (post-human?) appearance (sez E.W.) via early footage. According to Franco, he wasn't even asked for his permission, so it's not freshly filmed. But I'm still interested in how they give the character a nod since he was so important to "Rise".

I've read that the Gary Oldman character is gay and keeps a picture of Roddy McDowall in his wallet.

Also, they find Linda Harrison living on the streets of San Francisco as a bag lady.

            .html
            .html
Last year some folks were invited to the set of "Dawn of the POTA" to do some interviews for their websites. Fox has now given the OK to release this stuff and it seems to be kicking off a cool Ape Week in Ape-ril, culminating in the gang getting together at Wondercon on Saturday. Here's what Collider has on tap, with my own favorite tidbits.

This a list of 45 bullet points from the visit.
The producer sez there probably won't be any overt shout outs to the original films like there wuz in "Rise" ("Take your stinking paws off me", etc.). The fans didn't like that and they were under pressure from the studio to include those in "Rise". They also don't feel the need to include a big twist ending.
The story takes it's cue from the history of the White Man invading primitive cultures, such as the Aborigines and the Native Americans (*cough* "Avatar" *cough*).
The film was shot in 3D, which made for about 30% longer days. The D. P. used Arri Alexa cameras, the closest to a film look. The hardest part was making New Orleans look like San Francisco (the light, etc.).

Andy sez the film is about family and intergenerational conflict (those who lived in the human world and those born after it). And also the development of language: "it's discovering the power of language...(the director) didn't want to miss out on that part of the evolution, because that is in a way the most interesting part". He found the hardest part was expressing quiet, reflective moments.
As mentioned last week, there's going to be a nod to Will (James Franco), the Frankenstein who created this situation. Serkis sez of this scene (which he hadn't filmed yet): "on the page it's very beautiful. It will be an extraordinary thing to play".
On the director: "I can't express enough how ambitious this project is, and he's not only coping with that and getting the movie shot, but he's also creating an extraordinary amount of space for the actors to explore, and that's a real rarity. Much like Rupert Wyatt in the way that Rupert was insistent on it being all about the performance and really finding those moments. You can only ever do that on a project like this if you have a director who wants that and is gunning for that".
He considers this harder than "Rise": "There's really subtle scenes and subtle moments, so as an acting challenge this is a lot greater". The hardest thing about playing an ape is learning to be still.

Here's an interview with the human lead of "Rise". Serkis was particularly pleased with their relationship on camera.

Subject: producer Dylan Clark talks "Dawn of the POTA" (possible spoilers)
            .html
            .html
Here's another interview from that "Dawn" set visit last summer. It's with Dylan Clark, who wuz a big producer with Chernin Entertainment on "Rise" and "Dawn" (he's since left the company). He talks about how the script is the thing, not knowing references to previous movies or twist endings or setting up sequels ("If you don't properly tell your movie with a proper ending and it feels like you're setting up another movie, the audience hates you for that").
He also talks about why Rupert Wyatt exited and Matt Reeves came aboard. Though Wyatt has said he and the studio didn't see eye to eye on the story ( http://whatculture.com/film/exclusive-interview-rupert-wyatt-on-birdsong-why-he-quit-planet-of-the-apes.php ), Clark sez it's because Wyatt didn't want to jump right back in: "He constantly just wanted to try and squeeze in something smaller first, (that) is the truth".
But Clark is very high on "Dawn" and Matt Reeve's take. They were moving too fast in showing the apes develop and Reeves told them to take it slower: "I think we have a great ending. I think that this is a great story. It was a long way around the park to get there... but it's a really good story. It took Matt, as I say, it took an outsider from us to come in and sort of tell us, remind us, what we did really well on "Rise" (showing the ape intelligence develop)... We didn't want to go 50%, we wanted to actually go 15 to 20% of their intelligence... I hope we pull this off and if we do... Matt, he gets all the credit. Matt has been perfect".
Clark also acknowledges the improved CG work of WETA, including better ape lips and legs. And an improved stunt team to give them references: "We have a shot in Vancouver of one of our guys jumping 25 feet down an incline. He's hopping and just goes for it. And that will be in the movie in a way we never could have achieved in ("Rise")".
It's an interesting interview and Clark was an ape's best friend on these movies. It's too bad he won't be continuing with POTA.

20th century Fox REALLY needs to put the TV Series Back in Print... and BLURAY EDITION too,

With shows like Star Trek, Twilight Zone, and Little House on the Prairie being put on Blu Ray I have no idea why this isn't happening.

Bonus features should at least include:    Original TV promos, Sci Fi channel  interview segments from the '90s, and the extra footage shot for the TV movie syndicated versions.

This would've been the perfect year for that, since it's the 40th anniversary. If "Dawn" hits big I wouldn't be surprised if they did. They could do some good bonus features like interviewing those who worked on it and fans of it (the director and composer of "Dawn", for starters). And it's nice and compact. Fans don't have to buy a lot of seasons.

There's an official "Dawn of the POTA" movie magazine hitting shelves July 1st. It's got apetastic color photos and all things simian to scratch that certain itch. But you can tell people you only read it for the articles.  ; )

When it comes to Fox Home Video, I wouldn't be surprised if they're planning something -- and I wouldn't be surprised if they're not.  You just never know.  But I strongly suspect that if DAWN does really huge boxoffice this summer, there will be a huge POTA Blu-ray/DVD package of stuff in the fall.

A new PLANET Blu-ray is coming in June, and here's a look at the cover!  Finally, the cage from the original 1-sheet is on a cover! But what's with the Ursus?

But, is it merely new packaging?  Guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed.  I'll be happy if they just drop the cheap CGI Lawgiver intro (which I always skip).

Here's an interview with the cinematographer of "Dawn of the POTA". I'm not big on 3D but it was actually filmed in that (which adds about 30% more time to the day) so I will be seeing "Dawn" in IMAX. He also sez he filmed "close to half" of "Gravity", which won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. Anyway, an interesting talk about an aspect that usually doesn't get discussed.

Someone at Blu-ray.com has confirmed it is just a repackaging.  Fox is also repackaging the five disc set of the film series too.  I would guess they won't be doing anything with the original series in the fall when they debute DAWN on Blu-ray.   Oh well, not surprising, it's just Fox.

                .html
Select film journalists were brought to Fox to watch 6 clips from "Dawn of the POTA" (totaling about 20 minutes). These clips, plus a trailer shown at Cinema Con and Wonder Con, will probably hit within the next month or so. The 6 clips are:

                 1. 1st contact- first meeting between apes and humans since the virus
                 2. ape council- the apes "discuss" what to do about the humans
                 3. warning- Caesar warns Gary Oldman not to tread on him
                 4. Ellie and child - sweet scene between Keri Russell and Caesar's infant
                 5. human and Maurice - scene between teen human and the bookish orang (a la Virgil) Maurice
                 6. Koba - this scene got a big reaction as Koba shares a drink with some humans and it gets violent

The clips seem to highlight the two different ways the societies can go - to clash or to get along and learn from each other.

As one of the more anticipated movies of the summer, with an epic scope that will reportedly blow us away, some might be surprised at the budget for "Dawn of the POTA". The Hollywood Reporter sez it's $110 million (while Forbes estimates $120 million). "Rise" cost $100 million, so it's not a big markup. That's definitely on the low end of the spectrum for blockbuster FX movies this year. The big guns (Transformers 4", "Spidey") are $200 million + (Fox spent a reported $205 million on the new "X-Men", even though "Rise" beat every X-Men movie to date). The new Tom Cruise sci-fi "Edge of Tomorrow"? $175 - 200 million. The new Disney flick "Maleficent"? $175 million. Perhaps Dawn's closest kin this summer is "Godzilla", a "creature feature" without an expensive cast, and that still cost $160 million.  Even the risky Wachowski movie "Jupiter Ascending" is $150 million.
Of course, the important thing is the movie, not the budget. And by fall the pieces will land where they may. But going into the summer it shows where the studios consider their bread buttered and POTA is still a risky proposition, it seems. And maybe it shows why POTA continues to travel under the radar despite an almost half a $ billion haul worldwide last time for a movie set mostly in cages (and without 3D). But the "experts" are starting to come around. Box Office Mojo today predicted "Dawn" will do $700 million worldwide.
It's still a few months before we know if "Dawn" slips on the banana peel or makes a monkey out of the superheroes, but meanwhile the movie's director and composer took these pics of the Ape empire they're building. Are they playing with fire?

Matt Reeves and I were both born in 1966, we both had Beneath the Planet of the Apes on Super 8 as kids and now we find ourselves following each other on twitter. Coincidence? I think not. This could only mean one thing! Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is gonna be a MEGA HIT!! LOL MUHUWAHAHA!!!

What this simply means is that DAWN will have the best profit margin of all the summer films.  Fox is gonna love DAWN.

Smaller budgets force the makers to be more creative and to choose actors rather than 'stars'. It worked for the 'classic' Ape movies, I'm confident it will work for any new ones.

Yeah, these days big budgets go to actor's salaries more than movie sets. Plus Fox wanted to make a sequel closer to the future of the original rather than 10 years later. And I'm sure a lot was saved budget wise on that venture. So it's all good.
