I think the main savings is that they shot on real locations and kept the CG to a minimum. Yeah, their main stars are CG apes but other than that everything is real (except for odds and ends). People assume CG saves money, and it does if you have to destroy a city (Godzilla). But CG is expensive and you go for as little as possible. I remember someone asked Joe Letteri, the head of WETA, if they will ever be able to create a believable CG person and he asked why would they? It's more cost efficient to hire a real person. You only use CG when you have to, which most people don't understand. A lot of the stuff people assume is CG isn't. I think most of "Dawn" is the real deal and that's where they saved the money.

Yeah, these days big budgets go to actor's salaries more than movie sets. Plus Fox wanted to make a sequel closer to the future of the original rather than 10 years later. And I'm sure a lot was saved budget wise on that venture. So it's all good.

Smaller budgets force the makers to be more creative and to choose actors rather than 'stars'. It worked for the 'classic' Ape movies, I'm confident it will work for any new ones.

Yeah, I agree. My point in making the movie ten years later was that they didn't have to create an entire ape city had they made the movie closer to the original movie timeline of 3978. So a lot of money was saved in not creating more expensive movie sets.

At this point I think I know (and have posted) everything they're going to tell us about "Dawn of the POTA" before it's released. But this is a fun interview. What a cast. Not just talented but nice people. I'm impressed with Gary Oldman, who I guess I assumed was a pretentious actor's actor but is a regular guy and easy to talk to. And hanging out with Keri Russell seems to be a blast (could we ask for a more beautiful leading lady?). If they bring this kind of personality to their roles, we're golden.

And while we're at it, thanks to Al for this interview where Gary Oldman admits he's seen POTA2001 about 17 times because of his kids (fun fact: Oldman was the original choice to play Thade but they stalled over money).

And just in case you think he's doing this for the kids, Oldman said in the Wondercon press interview (posted here earlier) that he grew up with the original POTA and "can't imagine a childhood without POTA". Good man.

Happy Birthday to director Matt Reeves, who turns 48 today (April 27). Here's his thoughts on "Dawn". As we know, the best POTA movies have sympathetic villains (Dr. Zauis, Hasslein) that some might even consider heroes (after all, they are trying to save their societies). That's how Matt sees "Dawn": no villains allowed. He also talks about whether James Franco will make an appearance and whether he's planting seeds for later movies.

This is the first interview I've seen with Toby Kebbell, who picks up the mantle of Koba (the bitter bonobo from "Rise"). He talks a lot about playing an ape, gives some clues about the ape hierarchy and talks about Caesar vs. Koba re: humans (it's definitely more complex than Aldo). Kebbell will next play Dr. Doom in "The Fantastic 4" for Fox.

I found it interesting that the U.K. trailer said "July 17" but again the U.S. one just said "July". Even though some promotion materials have said July 11th, I still feel Fox is leaving it's option open to push it up a week to July 4rth. That's a big holiday weekend in the U.S. and movies have benefitted from it (ask Will Smith). There's no blockbuster scheduled to open then. Is Fox just going to let "Transformers" in it's 2nd weekend have it all to itself? If the movie can't make that date fine, but I wouldn't be surprised if Fox has a second schedule in their back pocket.

I don't think so, since they're recording the music as we speak. I think the music on these is kind of weak (I loved the music on the "Rise" trailers).

The reaction to these has been great. POTA has been put down too long by the MAN! Could it finally be the movie sensation we've waited 20 years for?

Early reaction to "X-Men" has been great too. Maybe the new regime at Fox will be the winners this summer.

Graffiti seems to play a role in the look for "Dawn of the POTA" and I found an Easter egg in the opening credits for the 1999 Matt Reeves/Keri Russell TV show "Felicity": Dr. Zauis graffiti. Keri walks by it at the 2 minute mark (bottom of the screen, Ron Howard credit). Since Keri might be walking among Dr. Zauis' ancestors on movie screens this summer under Reeves' direction, it's full circle time.

Sounds like the NECA "Dawn of the POTA" figures are starting to turn up at Toyz 'R Us and elsewhere (I guess Classic Apes in June). Here's a video review that gives you a good look at it and even compares it to the Japanese "Rise" figure. I think they went overboard on the war paint, giving it a kind of Tim Burton look but still a decent figure.

My local Toyz 'R Us had the new NECA "Dawn of the POTA" figures. Exactly 1 Koba, 1 Maurice and 4 Caesars. I grabbed Koba for now. They look much better in person than in photos. The black around the eyes isn't as pronounced. The paint is more subtle. A good job.

The guy at the register said, "I didn't even know we had these. I hope it's as good as the last movie." End of report.

Dear 20th Century Fox:

It's come to our attention that there is no big blockbuster opening July the 4rth (a Friday) in America, USA. This will not stand, because:

a) we all know how well a blockbuster opens on the 4rth of July holiday. It's been a tradition since your "Independence Day" in 1996.

b) Everybody assumes "Transformers 4" will be the big movie of the summer and it opens the week before. Are you afraid? "Amazing Spiderman 2" has already shown all bets are off as far as assumptions. Trans4mers is an old, hobbling franchise that people are tired of. The last one made $ 1 billion? You know as well as anyone how quick the tide turns. The new POTA has uniqueness on it's side and a growing audience who saw the last one on DVD; Transformers has a bad rep from too many subpar movies. You need to be strong.

c) The movie won't be ready? It's already showing in Jamaica and the Philippines on the 9th, so it's not much of a stretch.

d) POTA doesn't scream 4rth of July? You've already got Koba climbing on the American flag in the trailer. You've got Rocket's red glare. You've got ape independence. You're set. A child could create your ad campaign.

In short, you can let warmed over "Transformers" take the 4rth of July holiday or you can turn it into a true event by opening a brand new POTA movie. You've finally given a modern POTA a good script coupled with an epic look. Give it this platform and watch it work it's magic.

As far as official POTA wall calendars go, there wuz one for POTA2001 and now one for "Dawn". It's done by NECA, the same people who do the figures. Does that mean they will choose better pictures than the usual boring tie-in calendar? Dunno, and unfortunately, you can't count the days until "Dawn of the POTA" comes out because this will come out at the same time (July 2014). But you CAN count the days until 2015 runs out, which means it's 2016 and time for another POTA movie. That's just plain groovy!

I went to the new X-MEN today only to see the DAWN trailer (but I did stay for the X-Men & women, which was OK if you like that sort of thing). The DAWN trailer is slightly longer than what was released a couple weeks ago, showing more scenes of the battle. The CGI apes look really good. You see much more detail than you get on a computer screen. Now, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed the movie itself is as good.

Without further ado, please read my brief below and please, offer any feedback or recommendations you can imagine! I envisioned this as a group project, where I am glad simply to have planted the initial idea and basic structure of it, and am so looking forward to all your comments to make this the best (and possibly the only respectable/notable/existence-worthy) POTA Game ever. Feel free to pause here and there as you read to imagine what such a game would look and play like.

Set between the events of Rise and Dawn, Colony immerses you in the trials faced by Caesar in uniting Apekind in galvanising a nascent society of apes into pioneering their own culture and rising in defiance of a vengeful, dying human race.

As either the brave and noble Caesar himself, the wise and stealthy Orang-utan Maurice, or Rocket the burly and bombastic Chimpanzee, embark on a thrilling adventure that faithfully captures the emotional, action-packed and thought-provoking spirit of both Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

As one of these three historic members of the founding council of Ape Society, you will Guide, Safeguard, and Fight for your growing Colony at this new Dawn for Apekind.

Brief/Pitch

• The Last Of Us (emotional, dramatic, post-apocalyptic quasi-open world) meets Assassin's Creed (free-running elements) Red Dead Redemption (dramatic yet open world/chapter based light RPG elements) meets Abe's Oddysee (rescuing apes as Maurice, mixture of lush environments and cold cities and plants) meets X-Men The Game (Three interweaving character experiences).

• Set Between Rise and Dawn. The drama of raising of a society of apes whilst fighting off dying, vengeful humans across a story-driven yet open world campaign from 3 different interweaving character perspectives.

• Similar core gameplay style of Loping, Fighting, Horseback riding and sign language, with distinctive narrative and gameplay 'focuses' balanced between each character. Strateg y and the ability to command War-Apes as Caesar. Stealth and Education mini games as Maurice. Combat and ape-arena mini game for Rocket.

• Bonus Koba DLC campaign (Secret: once downloaded you are able to access Koba as a regular character for his own main-game campaign).

• Made by Ubisoft, the heavyweights behind Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, Prince Of Persia and even Peter Jackson's King Kong, which are all key touch stones for Colony

Features

• Become An Ape. As either Leader, Sage or Warrior, use animal cunning, instinct and genetically enhanced intelligence to help build, fight for and if needs be save your Colony and your ape kin.

• Explore A Fully Immersive Open World. Lope, Swing and Ride on horseback across 40 square kilometres of Post-Apocalyptic San Francisco wilderness, abandoned cities and facilities, plants and of course, an authentically re-created Muir Woods where Caesar and his ape kin have made their home.

• Customise Your Ape And Their Dwelling. Over 20 unique unlockable 'skins' for Caesar, Maurice and Rocket will add flair and drama to your unfolding story, while the option to modify and personalise each ape's home will make you look forward to returning home with collected bounty and loot.

• Fully Performance Captured Talent. Actors Andy Serkis, Terry Notary and Judy Greer as Cornelia, Caesar's wife provide the unique body and vocal language intrinsic to and essential for portraying the characters of the films.

• Experience An Academy-Award Scripted 'Interquel' Between Rise and Dawn.

Rick and Amanda Jaffa co-wrote three distinctive, interweaving storylines for Colony,

providing a robust, driving narrative whilst incorporating accessible, open world gameplay.

• A Strategy, Exploration & Action Adventure, Rolled into One. Lead a growing Ape Society in the strategy focused Caesar campaign. Conduct stealth rescue missions in the stealth focused Maurice campaign. Mount defensive offensives as Caesar's right hand ape in the Rocket Campaign. All will share core gameplay dynamics and possible actions, with special moves and bonus story-lines are exclusive to each as well.

• Pre-Order Before December 2015 For Access To The 'Koba's Escape' DLC. As bonus character Koba, the laboratory-traumatised bonobo from the films, experience this enigmatic, vicious character's origin story in a fully scripted, story driven Downloadable Content extra, exclusive to Pre-december pre-orders.

• 'Light' RPG Elements Including Aptitude Progress Escalation (APE) points in climbing, horseback riding, hunting, swinging, loping, combat, strategy will see you improve at any specific committed skill honing.

Story Ideas (Non-Finalised, No Knowledge Of Dawn or Pre-Dawn canon Storyline)

Set 2 years after the Simian Flu breakout.

As the nearby city and 99% of the world's human population dies, a gas-masked and slightly insane rogue military group who know how the disease got out want to hunt the apes for a) revenge and b) to kidnap apes for dissection and finding a cure. The game would take the three apes across a story featuring dangerous human enemies, with betrayal, sacrifice and societal upheaval as the main story points.

Set 5 years after the Simian Flu breakout.

Ape-only storyline, focussing on Caesar having to deal with a rogue challenger ape - a laboratory female orang-utan named Mogra, who has declared herself a dangerous prophetic ape messiah and has defected from Caesar's group, becoming his nemesis and constant threat. The game would centre around Mogra trying to get into the city and steal guns to get an upper hand on Caesar, even though Caesar has outlawed the use of guns and hires his most trusted apes to ensure none are found or taken back to the Colony.

Set 7 years after the Simian Flue breakout.

A short dramatic story focussed on Caesar's attempts to build an ape school, with dissidents believing he is becoming too human like, and assassination attempts have been made to unseat Caesar's council from authority. This story would follow a murder/mystery/crime pattern, where increasingly strange rituals are taking place within the camp by a supposedly rogue ape. A group of gorillas have made camp nearby and though odd and slightly alien, agree to camp with Caesar. It is discovered that The Gorillas were fleeing a tribe of cannibalistic bonobos.

Here's video of that "Dawn of the POTA" music preview in Lucerne, Switzerland. Michael Giacchino intros it. This followed a screening of "Star Trek Into Darkness" with live accompaniment. Kinda purty for a bunch of damn, dirty apes.
