I've got the Medicom one but it also included a mini (1 inch?) Lawgiver in the package. I also have the Kubric set with the Lawgiver. And that's what, 2.5 inches?

So I have 3 Lawgivers, and they are all small.

I'm with Jeff. Size does not matter. I hope.

Well, after reading the description, and seeing it says the height of it (if I unbox it, it should look good with Megos), I think I will save my pennies after all...

It does look more accurate than the Sideshow Lawgiver, though it could be better, but it looks more like the size of the mini Lawgiver in Dr. Zaius' office in PLANET, so I welcome it, though I'm not sure what I'll do with it.  It may stay in its box for a long time.

I already have it on pre-ordered too, at Entertainmentearth.com   It's $54.99 there, but they say it won't be out until April.  I think that gives everyone plenty of time to save their pennies.

Did the price of the Sideshow Lawgiver keep many here from getting it?  What about the 18" Dr. Zaius figure?  I got both and was hoping Sideshow would do more, but I guess they let it go.

Yep. The Sideshows I have (Zaius, Zira, Caesar, Mutant, & Gorilla Soldier) I got 2nd hand for about $20 each. I'm more interested in a nice cross-section of characters. That's why I'm more interested in NECA's "Dawn" figures because I didn't have any of those characters. I have Koba and Maurice. I didn't like Caesar with the war paint. But I may get it since the pictures of their new Caesar don't look so good. For those who have the new POTA picture book, there's a shot of War Paint Caesar without the war paint. That's the Caesar I want.
As far as NECA Classic Apes, I'm very picky, because I have these characters from other companies (especially Medicom). I have the 1st Zaius. I'll probably get Ursus, Zira and definitely Julius. The Megos were big for me as a kid so I might get the 8" Megoesque Taylor (their gorilla looks terrible). I'm not a completeist, I just get what I dig.

Yes the price was what stopped me. In fact, I got most of my sideshows of eBay after the initial sales, and managed to get better prices that way. Not so for the Lawgiver statue whose prices were always even higher on eBay.

I forgot all about that giant Zaius.

Anyone that still wants to pick one up, here's one on eBay... only $550!

I would imagine you'd be able to take some acetone (or maybe even plain nail polish remover) and remove the war paint from the current Caesar: Then with the war-paint off, take some acrylic paints, mix up a skin tone you like, and paint him up to what you want him to look like..    For some reason, Koba with war paint doesn't bother me, but it's too pronounced on Caesar. He looks Tim Burtony, he's got raccoon eyes (this isn't Guardians of the Galaxy). But we've got a long way to go with Caesar so I'll wait to see what else they come up with.

Be careful before using acetone. That stuff can melt some plastics. If you want to use it, do a little test somewhere like under the feet where you won't do any permanent damage.

I could see them bringing in clothes at the end, maybe a future coda. Probably I'm influenced by "Battle" but I could see Caesar dying at the end (should he?) and then them going into the future a smidge where Caesar is venerated (the Moses figure they're talking about). Where the apes have clothes and we get a taste of the next one. I don't see how they could worship him like Moses during his lifetime. His real Moses story was "Rise". Everything else is just further adventures among the monkeys.

I bought both from Sideshow and thought they were worth the price.  It sure seemed to me that the Dr. Zaius figure was made just to comply with the contract with Fox.  I assumed that they agreed to do at least one premium format figure, and that's exactly what they did.  They didn't even go to the trouble to design a printed box like they do for most other figures, just printed information directly on the cardboard mailer, and shortly after that dropped any references to POTA from their website.  I'm guessing we'll never see anything else from Sideshow, but I do appreciate what we did get from them while it lasted.

Thank goodness for N.E.C.A., they seem more interested than Sideshow ever was.

My guess is that they simply didn't sell well enough for Sideshow to make enough of a profit on what the cost of the license, design and manufacturing was.  What was made sold-out, but probably Sideshow would have made more if the demand was there.  It obviously wasn't.  I'm sure that if NECA doesn't sell enough to make the profit they hope for, they'll drop it too.  It's unfortunate, but it's always about money.

Looks like the "Dawn" video will include a "preview" of Fox's upcoming Moses movie "Exodus: Gods and Kings". Lots of POTA/Moses connections these days. Of course Moses wuz one of Charlton Heston's most famous roles. "Rise" could be considered a retelling of the Moses story (the writers saw it that way). Recently the "Dawn" director called Caesar "the ape Moses". And the same people who are bringing us the new Ape movies (the Chernin folks) did the "Exodus" flick. Holy Moses!

Maybe Toyz-R-Us is feeling the guilts for having an exclusive so they're stocking up on Apes. Ursus looks magnifico. The sculpts on Zaius and Zira are good but I have a prob with their colors. Too much orange on Zaius' face, too much white on Zira. They do such good work, I just wish some of the colors were more on point.

.html.htmlI don't get why the 7" Soldier is okay by you but the 8" version isn't? They essentially look the same, so what's the difference? All I can guess is the enlarged head shows his goofiness more clearly? I'm not saying he's the best looking Gorilla ever made, but compared to anything else that's been done thru the years, I'd say he's at least on par with them...

My big hang-up with the 8" version: I've yet to see a photo with him wearing his ammo bandolier so I'm guessing they're not including that accessory which makes no sense... The Mego repro site might end up selling a lot of their repro ammo slings to make up for NECA's shortfall (but I'm not 100% sure the repro bandolier would look right or not...)

Mine just has a dinky little "collectibles" section amid all the Star Wars and Ninja Turtles. What they have changes often. The stuff they have now is Predators and Dr. Who and Godzilla and figures from Sons of Anarchy...and Apes. They had those Breaking Bad figures that got pulled and might eventually be worth some dough.
Like I said, I've never seen that much Apes there. It might have to do with the gorilla exclusive.

Where is NECA based?  Is it a Southern California company, because if it is then maybe things are first distributed in the southwestern region of the country.  It may be a few weeks before they start to appear in other regions.  But you know, when it comes to buying things these days, it's best to start on-line.  So, is T-R-U offering these figures on its website yet?  All I can find is the two-pack gorillas.

People at the Mego Museum mentioned that at their local TRU stores, the NECA stuff was in its own little area in the elctronics/games dept.. Knowing that, I'll check my TRU one more time to see if they're finally carrying them... I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath...

Maybe Toyz-R-Us is feeling the guilts for

Canadians:  anybody seen the NECA classic 1968 Apes figures in Canadian Toys 'R' Us stores?  They're not on the Canadian Toys 'R' Us website, but they are on the American ones.

I bought the first series off eBay from the States, but am looking to get series 2 (and eventually series 3), plus maybe the gorilla-soldier two-pack.

Thanks!

Funny you should ask as I just checked out the Toys-R-Us here in Ottawa today at lunch time after hearing they were out in the States yesterday. No luck.

Ironically, they just received the first 3 NECA figures that came out months ago, I also inquired again if they ever received any of the Cornelius 'scaler' figures (clings to MP3/phone 'bud' wires) that was exclusive to Toys-R-Us and Target stores, but they never got them either.

I think I'm going to have to order them online as the prospects that either of these will ever arrive in Canadian stores is remote at best.

PS: Did you ever get a chance to watch those 3 'POTA rareties' DVDs I gave you when you were here at Cancon 2013? I think I also gave you an Apesfan fanzine.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I went to the store inquiring about the Gorilla Two Pack. So to answer your question, yes they just got the 'regular' NECA first set.

I just pre-ordered the first set from a local comic store that carries action figures. You should be able to get those in some of the larger comic shops in Toronto. (Silver Snail?, Paradise?)

Heads up! Caesar is a head case (created by the WETA folks) this blu-ray autumn and some of the press are already going in head first. But don't get in over your head, it's around $100 and comes with movies you might already have. But it's head and shoulders above other blu-ray sets.
The "Dawn" blu-ray has already hit Australia and hits the U.K. Nov. 24.

Their great scenes. Especially where Malcolm learns Caesar's name for the first time. Which later leads to "No Caesar, No!"

I demand a Director's Cut! "Lousy Human Bastards!" :)

One week to go until the "Dawn" home video arrives. This article has a clip from the blu-ray centering on Keri Russell (Ellie) but below that is an interview with director Matt Reeves on what the future has in store for Caesar.
Reeves: "What we want to do is take the movie away from San Francisco, into a sort of larger landscape, to allow the movie to be expansive but not lose any of the intimacy... this notion of our nature, the way in which POTA explores the sort of war within us in addition to the war between the species, that's really going to be central to what this story's about. It's going to take Caesar into uncomfortable places that he's never been before and really test him. It could, I think, be the most emotional story yet, a really powerful story, but also a really thrilling and epic story".
He also takes to heart the criticisms about the lack of female characters: "It's something that we definitely are thinking about moving forward. I always try to think about "what is the right story?" and the characters come out of that, so it is a perspective that we are definitely trying to keep in mind as we plan out the next one".
Finally, he commented on the recent concept art for "Rise" that would have ended the movie with the Statue of Liberty. Though some people are in a hurry to connect to the original POTA movie, he feels it would've nipped in the bud what's interesting about these new movies and "it's totally unnecessary". He sez there's "zero" chance the statue will make an appearance in Apes 3.

Very cool and new (for me) picture.

This is one of those times I wish we could see more detail from these vintage photos. The bottom part of the housing structure looks very adobe like and fits in with what I describe as ape city structures. But the top looks like a giant face/mask from a totem or Aztec sculpture.

I agree with you that it's confusing about that name: Since it's not an adaption, I don't know why they'd do that, but then again they did it with the "Firestorm" novel too (titled it DOTPOTA and subtitled it "Firestorm")...

Time to check the deals on the "Dawn" blu-ray in the Sunday paper.
Sometimes stores have exclusive docs or footage for the big releases. That doesn't look to be the case. All the extras are in the general release. Any exclusives are just packaging. So what's the choice?
Walmart: their exclusive looks to be a "Rise"/"Dawn" 2-pack.
Best Buy: they've become the "metalpak" kings with a nice metal case. But their exclusive cover art is kinda bland (black and white of the familiar Caesar image). It also looks like their metalpak is only for the 3D version (which includes a blu-ray for those who don't have a 3D system).
Target: They were offering a NECA Classic POTA gorilla figure with the blu-ray but they aren't advertising it here. Might be only with preorders and not in stores.
Then of course there's the big Caesar head collection for about $100 but that doesn't seem exclusive to anybody.
In short, it doesn't look like it matters where you buy it but that's not always the case.
        "Dawn" goes blu on Tuesday.

I'm getting the 3D combo pack and Target's gorilla figure Blu-ray deal if I find it in target stores. The Caesar Head is a big price for someone who has every Blu-ray in it like myself. So I'll pass on that until it drops in price months from now.

Here's a vid that gives a good look at Best Buy's exclusive "Dawn" steelbook.
According to Target's website their deal with the NECA gorilla (with blu-ray $25) is only on preorders, not available in their stores. Too bad, that would be good publicity for NECA if some Average Joes got their hands on it ("Where can I get more of these?").
       Happy hunting on Tuesday.

Video of about HMV's steelbook not Best Buy. Wonder if this a UK exclusive or whether it applies here (and by 'here' I mean Canada). Often these 'exclusives' do not cross international borders, even Can/US.

I'll be getting one, but not sure which. May wait until sometime after the holidays and save a few bucks. Or I might just give in and drive in a mad rush to get my stinkin' paws on it the first day.

Kevin, thank you for pointing out this:  "The Caesar head only comes with Rise and Dawn in the U.S. The UK version has all the films."  I was thinking of getting this, but with only two films, it's overpriced, I feel, in the US and Canada (where we get the US version).

That's true, but you're basically paying for the head (designed by WETA). Most fans already have all the movies (except maybe "Dawn"). I don't know what materials it's made from but if you can get a deal it seems pretty good considering what collectibles go for these days (Star Wars toys are going for $20 now).
        Thanx for joining us, Rob.

$100 + for Rise, Dawn and a Caesar Head? Cool, I'll be placing my order as soon as I finish smoking this joint.

That's true, but you're basically paying
for the head (designed by WETA). Most fans already have all the movies (except
maybe "Dawn"). I don't know what materials it's made from but if you can
get a deal it seems pretty good considering what collectibles go for
these days (Star Wars toys are going for $20 now).

      Thanx for joining us, Rob.

The first trailer for the new "Terminator" franchise has hit and once again Jason "Malcolm" Clarke is humanity's last hope. This trailer also reminds me of "Dawn" thanx to the same trailer music. '90's POTA movie star-in-waiting Ah-nuld Whatshisname is also back but he told us he would be.
