I agree, where else could they go with Koba? And
for him to survive is really pushing it. This isn't "Batman".

Koba is a psycho killer and we've already had his episode. We don't
need to see it replayed, it'll only amount to what we've already seen.

Subject: [pota] What role should Koba have in the next
Apes movie(s)?
Is it a mistake to bring back Koba for the next movie installment?
Here are some pros & cons that I can think of, to which you're
perfectly welcome to add or subtract:
PROS:
*Koba serves as a
great example for parents to use when advocating that their kids treat animals
better, because animals have feelings too.
*Koba also serves as a great
example for animal rights activists who seek to personify their messages on
behalf of voiceless yet living objects of their appreciation.
*Meanwhile, anyone who has to cope with sympathetic dissenters in their
organization (be it familial, entrepreneurial, governmental, civic or otherwise)
can learn some lessons from how Koba increasingly rebelled and was brutally
attacked by Caesar during a time of verbal confrontation. Can you imagine how
much better things might have been if Caesar had put the "support the humans'
endeavor to restore power" issue to a vote within the Apes community? Even the
youngest sentient simians could have had a say, sort of like Scots ages 16-18
recently got to vote on Scottish secession:
http://www.seceder.com/Scotland
Instead, Caesar used
brute force to humiliate and hurt Koba in front of others, before Koba
ultimately shot Caesar. I've had folks tell me that Koba merely cared about
himself, but I think he cared about apes' survival while realizing that without
a team, apes are neither together nor strong. Sure he killed Ash most brutally,
but the U.S.A. regularly executes those who are perceived as social cancers. He
didn't execute Maurice and others from Caesar's inner circle though. He even
reached out to Caesar's son, right?
*Koba generates instant enthusiasm
among anyone who is having the Apes reboot described to them as part of an
effort to get them to care enough to actually view the reboot's installments.
There have been plenty of series out there about nonhumans interacting. How many
have anyone even remotely interesting & sympathetic like Koba though? He
helps our beloved reboot be unique, and relevant to modern societal issues too.
Only when medical experimentation on animals ceases, and we've become vegetarian
or we otherwise eat meat that doesn't come directly from killed
animals:
http://www.new-harvest.org
can we finally say that
Koba's not as relevant as he currently still is. |
O.K., now on to some
cons:
CONS:
*Koba's presumably dead. But so is Sigourney Weaver's
character Grace in the blockbuster movie Avatar. She's nevertheless reportedly
coming back for the Avatar sequel, due out in December of 2016. Meanwhile her
revival in the Alien movies didn't stop folks from buying tickets including for
the eventual prequel Prometheus (which admittedly didn't include her but still
rode on the Alien movies' coattails). Incidentally does anyone doubt that we'll
be seeing more of the supposedly deceased Anakin Skywalker in the J.J. Abrams
installments of Star Wars?
Next:
*The interaction between Koba
and Caesar is becoming a "been there; done that" struggle. But one can say the
same about the wildly successful Star Wars installments. Nothing says that the
entire War on the Planet of the Apes movie has to focus on Koba, either. But
Caesar could soon realize that it's best to keep one's friends close and one's
enemies closer. Imagine if Koba goes into exile, starts his own society and
antagonizes the humans' military forces to the point of wanting to do as Gary
Oldman's character did by exterminating every last one of the simians (including
Caesar's more peaceful tribe). Koba could help spell out how important it is not
to overly generalize, just as we shouldn't assume that all folks from the Middle
East are aspiring terrorists. Perhaps it's no surprise that Dawn, made by
Americans with a message for Americans, has brought in over 70% of its box
office revenues OUTSIDE of the U.S.A.? The Chi nese seem especially
intrigued
with how we're experiencing internal dissent regarding foreign invasions. China
claims never to have invaded a foreign land, by the way (although some could say
China became as large as it did by doing so centuries ago, especially regarding
Tibet).
Thank you for having considered my thoughts. I for one am very
pleased (and relieved) that Koba will reportedly return. I don't want War on the
Planet of the Apes to fall victim to the statistic that sequels typically earn
just 66% of the originals. The perpetrator of this briliant scene is good for at
least a few hundred million in ticket sales:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itnj-k0TRB0
Does anyone
here not know of anyone analogous to Koba? The interaction involving such
characters is part of the human condition that the POTA movies are so good at
exploring in detached yet engaging ways (without being overly political).
What role do you think Koba should have in the next Apes movie(s)?
Cheers from Houston (where Astronaut George Taylor presumably
trained)...

I'll tell you one thing that every good Ape fans
knows: the only thing that counts in the end is apes with clothes! NAKED,
merciless force doesn't work (ask Koba).

I agree, where else could they go with Koba? And
for him to survive is really pushing it. This isn't "Batman".

Koba is a psycho killer and we've
already had his episode. We don't need to see it replayed, it'll only
amount to what we've already seen.

Apes movie(s)?
Is it a mistake to bring back Koba for the next movie installment?
Here are some pros & cons that I can think of, to which you're
perfectly welcome to add or subtract: PROS: *Koba serves as a
great example for parents to use when advocating that their kids treat animals
better, because animals have feelings too.
Even the
youngest sentient simians could have had a say, sort of like Scots ages 16-18
recently got to vote on Scottish secession: http://www.seceder.com/Scotland Instead, Caesar used
brute force to humiliate and hurt Koba in front of others, before Koba
ultimately shot Caesar.
Only when medical experimentation on animals ceases, and we've become vegetarian
or we otherwise eat meat that doesn't come directly from killed
animals: http://www.new-harvest.orgcan we finally say that
Koba's not as relevant as he currently still is. | O.K., now on to some
cons: CONS: *Koba's presumably dead.
Next: *The interaction between Koba
and Caesar is becoming a "been there; done that" struggle.
The Chi nese seem especially intrigued
with how we're experiencing internal dissent regarding foreign invasions. China
claims never to have invaded a foreign land, by the way (although some could say
The perpetrator of this briliant scene is good for at
least a few hundred million in ticket sales: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itnj-k0TRB0Does anyone
here not know of anyone analogous to Koba? The interaction involving such
characters is part of the human condition that the POTA movies are so good at
exploring in detached yet engaging ways (without being overly political).
What role do you think Koba should have in the next Apes movie(s)?
Cheers from Houston (where Astronaut George Taylor presumably
trained)...

After that, who knows: If they do another 5-7 films after the one set for release in 2016 and they do them at 2 to 3 year intervals, that's bring us to roughly the 2030s (and it could easily be later than that)... Most people here will be in their 60s and 70s, and would be outside of the marketing people's ideal demographics... That many years from now, even the young people being drawn to the new films will be outside of their "youth market", so who knows what kind of films they could/would be making then and at that point, will anyone here care?

Fox has been making "X-Men" movies for almost 15
years consistently with no end in sight. Non-superhero (but close) is James
Bond. If movies are popular enough new fans come in. Science-fiction is the
future of storytelling and I think it will always be popular.
The POTA producer (Dylan Clark) threw out the
number 8 as a rough idea of the amount of movies they might do. Finish the
Caesar trilogy, go into the future and another trilogy with the apes large and
in charge and I'll be satisfied. Or even 5 like the original series. I never
thought we'd get this far. Before "Rise" I thought POTA was dead for our
lifetimes.

In what I guess is Dawn's first award, the OURF
(Orang Utan Republik Foundation) has awarded "Dawn of the POTA" it's PONGO
award. The award is dedicated to works that show other species' right to exist.
OURF works to protect threatened species in Indonesia, particularly the
orangutans. While "Dawn" getting an award from an orangutan protection group
might seem like an easy win, it's still an ape-propriate honor. Another honoree
is the James Cameron produced global warming doc series "Years of Living
Dangerously" which I saw and was very good and eye opening. While not exactly an
Oscar, this is important stuff, so congrats "Dawn".

What up with Rupert Wyatt, who was launched to
directorial stardom with "Rise of the POTA"? He's baaaack, with his first
feature since his ape-stravaganza. And he's bringing along Mark (POTA2001)
Wahlberg and John Goodman (the former John Chambers in "Argo"). Paramount is
positioning this for the Oscars. Could it be the Battle of the Ape directors
this year (Wyatt vs. Matt Reeves, with maybe Tim Burton for "Big Eyes")? No, but
who knows about the future?
"The Gambler" gets a limited release Dec. 12th
and opens wide in January. And no Kenny Rogers in sight.

The Fox is in the hen house! The studio has
reportedly broken both the domestic and international all-time box office record
this year, with no small thanx to it's #2 movie of the year, "Dawn of the POTA".
Fox has done $1.5 billion domestic this year and $3.254 billion internationally.
And the year isn't even over yet. They still have their Moses movie "Exodus"
(from the POTA producers), the reliable "Night At the Museum" franchise and a
new "Madagascar" cartoon.

Today is exactly one month until the release of
"Dawn of the POTA" on blu ray and DVD. And Fox has released a short taste of
what the extras will look like. We'll get more clips and promo interviews as the
month progresses. Meanwhile, go blu with Blue Eyes:
And here's a memo from Steven "Rise"

Personally I could never understand Digital HD. This is a movie, not songs that you could pick and choose between tunes. But if they could make an extra million from it, power too them :)

These figures look great, but I can't figure out why they didn't give them ammo bandoliers? (It's not like they're not noticeable in BENEATH, so it's not like they would have overlooked them...)

One other thing I don't like about them (in addition to no bandolier) is that they're saying the two pack Soldiers are individual sculpts: If anyone can tell me what the differences are between these two, I'd be glad to hear it (I can't tell a difference between them other than the paint jobs...)
If my Toys R Us carries these (I didn't see any of the first wave there), I'll probably end up buying them... I don't think they're terrible, I do think they look good, but I can see where you and Rory have issues with them... Well, with no bandoliers and looking exactly the same outside of paints, I guess *I* have issues with them too ;) They're something that if I can get them, I'll buy them but I won't be actively seeking them...

It's a big day for Fox as Stacey
Snider becomes co-chairman. She'll help call the shots on "Apes 3", which
will film next year if they're keeping to the 2016 schedule.
She wuz chairman, er, chairwoman, of
Universal from 1999 to 2006; then she moved to Dreamworks under Steven
Spielberg. She sez: "(Fox head) Jim Gianopulos has assembled the finest group of
executives and filmmakers in the business; and they're producing impactful,
culturally relevant films. I'm excited and privileged to join them in their
pursuit of excellence". She added her favorite POTA character is Virgil (no she
didn't!).
Fox has had a record-breaking year and I like to
think it's because the quality of their movies has improved. Good luck to
her.

While promoting his new movie "The Better Angels"
(in which he plays Abraham Lincoln's dad), Jason (Malcolm) Clarke said he
doesn't know anything about Apes 3 but is signed 4 another one. It's possible
they signed him for two "just in case" and maybe he won't be back. But I think
if they are going to do the Apes vs. Humans War next, it would be good if
Malcolm and Ellie are on the human side trying to stop the carnage. With Jackie
Earle Haley as the Pattonesque general who won't stand for crying around these
brave human soldiers. Shaddup!!!

Looks like Fox is going to promote the "Dawn"
cast in the Best Supporting category (including CG thesps Andy Serkis and
Toby Kebbell). They are looking at it as an ensemble film (plus it might be
easier to get a nod). Of course, the Oscars have a rough history with sci-fi and
with sequels, so it looks pretty bleak. But lately sci-fi has been making
inroads and the film wuz widely admired. "Interstellar" wuz supposed to be the
sci-fi darling of the year but it's reviews have been mixed.

My question is: could this marvel of the universe of a movie, this glorious paradox that takes you to the stars, be sort of foreshadowing plot elements from an upcoming POTA sequel involving George Taylor & crew?
As I don't want to spoil this new frontier in Sci Fi entertainment for anyone, I'll tread very lightly on plot details as if they're part of the Forbidden Zone. If you want to see a visually, emotionally, intellectually and perhaps even spiritually magnificent adventure though, Interstellar is the one for you this Holiday season. It just might sway 20th Century Fox to go further into Taylor's, Landon's, Dodge's and Stewart's eventful space travels, too, as this masterpiece is demonstrating that the audience appetite for such travels clearly exists. But there's more potentially on the horizon for Taylor and crew than just an exciting temporal roller coaster ride, as Interstellar's plot twists seem to suggest. The astronauts might not be as helpless this time around, if they play their cards right...
Food for thought from Houston... :-)

I was disappointed in "Interstellar". I was
looking forward to this movie for a long time. First Spielberg was going to do
it, then Chris Nolan, with physicist Kip Thorne as consultant. And also "2001"
as a model. I was expecting a hard science epic about traveling to a black hole
(interesting, since I posited black holes as a way for things to work out in my
POTA chronology). The science in the flick is just not believable (I guess the
black hole itself is accurate).
As far as storytelling, it's about family and the
passage of time and I'd be lying if I didn't say my eyes got moist at times. But
I'd compare it more to "E. T." than "2001". Even though Christopher Nolan
directed it, it's a Spielberg movie. I'm glad Hollywood is rolling the dice
these days on legit sci-fi movies ("Gravity", "Dawn of the POTA",
"Interstellar") but I have to call 'em as I see 'em.

That Jason Clarke interview I posted, he said the
head of Fox, Jim Gianopolus, told him that he recently e-mailed director Matt
Reeves to remind him of the 2016 release date. I get the feeling it will be the
same as "Dawn"; Reeves will have a lot of freedom to do what he wants as long as
he makes the release date. If you want a movie two years later there is not a
lot of time for second guessing. The script will have to be done early 2015,
casting in spring, shooting in the summer, and the rest of the time doing the
FX/finishing. Reeves did it before.

upcoming POTA sequel involving George Taylor & crew? As I don't want
to spoil this new frontier in Sci Fi entertainment for anyone, I'll tread very
lightly on plot details as if they're part of the Forbidden Zone. If you want to
see a visually, emotionally, intellectually and perhaps even spiritually
magnificent adventure though, Interstellar is the one for you this Holiday
season. It just might sway 20th Century Fox to go further into Taylor's,
Landon's, Dodge's and Stewart's eventful space travels, too, as this masterpiece
is demonstrating that the audience appetite for such travels clearly exists. But
there's more potentially on the horizon for Taylor and crew than just an
exciting temporal roller coaster ride, as Interstellar's plot twists seem to
suggest. The astronauts might not be as helpless this time around, if they play
their cards right... Food for thought from Houston... :-) As a
sidenote, a virus that makes humans more dumb has just been discovered: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/virus-that-makes-humans-more-stupid-discovered-9849920.html"

The "Dawn of the POTA" gang is out and about
promoting the upcoming "Dawn" blu ray/DVDs (December 2nd). While talking to
Coming Soon, director Matt Reeves gave a little hint where the next flick could
go. He sez in "Rise", Caesar wuz a revolutionary. In "Dawn", he wuz a leader.
Where in hell do they go from here?
Reeves sez: "The notion of what we're after with
the 3rd is to sort of continue that trajectory and see how he becomes a seminal
figure in ape history. He almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses. A mythic
status... We're trying to play out those themes".
Yeah? So, what does that mean? Will he be
worshipped? Will it go to his head? Will absolute power corrupt absolutely? It's
hard to imagine Caesar being corrupted but that's what might make it
interesting. Moses wuz called the "lawgiver", so will Caesar become the
Lawgiver? Caesar has been the hero for two movies. Could something so terrible
happen that he turns his back on the humans and seals their fate?
Caesar fans: Silence him! You go too
far!! <.html <.html

With director Matt Reeves & Andy Serkis out
promoting the "Dawn" blu-ray, it looks like they will be getting together to
talk "Apes 3" in earnest for the first time tonight, Monday. Both agree the
future won't be easy for Caesar. Reeves sez the next sequel is "going to
press into some very painful emotional places for him". Serkis adds: "There's
potential war (at the end of "Dawn"). He's going to have to lead the apes in
darker times. I think it's going to be very powerful". Darker than "Dawn"? Get
out of town!
Toby Kebbell sez he'd love 2 return, either as
Koba or a new character.

That was one of my predictions with the way they keep harping on about how Caesar "almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses. A mythic status... We're trying to play out those themes": I said people were going to start saying (or in your case, asking if) Caesar is/will become The Lawgiver and now with speculations like this occuring, it looks like the dam has sprung a leak... I just hope they get that leak repaired...
I can see it now: People will say Caesar is The Lawgiver and that some ape history revisionist changed him from a chimp to an orangutan (which of course we know is not the case because he is and always will be an orang...) People will get so desperate to try to connect the rebooted films to the original(s) that they will come up with all kinds of half-a**ed ideas and speculations to try to get them to "fit" together...

Just relax. They aren't going to make Caesar the Lawgiver. These new movies are part of the unrecorded pre-history of the simian civilization. We know from the original movie that the Scared Scrolls won't be written until around 2778 AD, these new movies are being set around 2026 AD. Plenty of time to play around with events that will be long forgotten by the time of the '68 original.

Matt Reeves sez he's outlining "Apes 3" right now
("I'm pretty excited about it") and gives us a little more hint about it: "The
oncoming war is what "Dawn" was all about avoiding and it wasn't avoided, so
what does that mean to (Caesar) as a character and how will he lead his (apes)
through this?". So it would seem it's going to be about the war and it will turn
Caesar into the ape Moses. Got it.
Reeves adds that the title he's got in mind would
be one word shorter than "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". Well, it won't be
"War For the..." or "War of the...". Maybe it's only one word and then POTA.
"Damn the Planet of the Apes"? "Ascend the Planet of the Apes"?

Why do lawgivers always have to be way more expensive. The size consideration explains a slight surcharge, but this is four times the price of the other NECA figures. As much as I would like to have one, I'm going to have to pass.

Last night (11/10) wuz the premiere screening of
Rupert Wyatt's 1st movie since "Rise of the POTA". "The Gambler" stars none
other than Mark (POTA2001) Wahlberg and also has Argo's John Chambers, John
Goodman. Wyatt has also been doing press for the film and Collider asked him to
give his thoughts on the Apes sequel that went on without him.
He sez: "I thought it was beautifully directed; an
incredibly well-made film. It's hard, you know, because I very much wanted to do
the sequel. I was very passionate about doing the sequel and other (Ape) films.
I love that franchise and I'm thrilled in a way for Matt and what he achieved
with that because he achieved something I probably couldn't have because he did
something different. He's his own filmmaker, I'm a different filmmaker, so it's
great he's had success with that film and the fact that the franchise lives,
that's what we're all hoping for".
He talks about how he was going to bring the apes
back into the city to learn the human machines; he sez "(they'd) evolve
technically, sort of figure out the combustion engine, so in a way interact with
our society. And for me, I found that fascinating". Sounds to me more like a
prequel to Boulle's novel than to the society of the original
flicks.
So what happened to Wyatt? The official reason
wuz that he didn't feel he had enough time to do the film by 2014 (after false
starts with scripts that weren't working). According to producer Dylan Clarke,
Wyatt was kind of aped out and wanted to make a smaller film first. But 2014
would have been 3 years, long enough between films for the studio. Matt Reeves
came in fresh and pretty much cranked it out and made the release. Now Reeves is
in the position Wyatt wuz, burned out from making one ape movie but having to go
right into a new one (especially if they still want a 2016
release).

I totally agree with Dario about the price being unfair though, it doesn't take any more to make one of those compared to the regular 7" figures: In fact I'd guess it could be easier since there's no joints that have to move, etc... The biggest reason I want this Lawgiver is because it's probably the closest they'll come to making a Lawgiver statue close to Mego scale... With my luck, I'll buy this statue and then they'll come along with one scaled for the 8" figures NECA's planning... But if they do that, since it'd be geared toward an 8" scale, they'd probably charge over $100.00 based on the pricing for the 7" scale statue...
One thing though, I don't like that it's "limited edition" because sometimes it seems like they do that type of thing to try to get people to go on buying frenzies to "one up" someone else... By that I mean say person A is a real egotist and person B enjoys something as much (if not more) than person A but they don't have "everything" made... Then in some cases person A would be saying "I like franchise X more than you do because I have "everything" made on it."...

I think it looks great, and I'm willing to pay $60 for it and I have it pre-ordered. I think it's better to ignore "limited edition", numbered items, etc. and just think am I willing to pay that price for that item. If you are, great, if not, don't buy it. It's just incredible to me that companies are still making collectibles for our favorite movie 46 YEARS after it's release. I couldn't be happier about it.

He looks Expensive. $80 ouch!
And yes he does look a tad cross-eyed.
Why do lawgivers always have to be way more expensive. The size consideration explains a slight surcharge, but this is four times the price of the other NECA figures. As much as I would like to have one, I'm going to have to pass.

It does look more accurate than the Sideshow Lawgiver, though it could be better, but it looks more like the size of the mini Lawgiver in Dr. Zaius' office in PLANET, so I welcome it, though I'm not sure what I'll do with it. It may stay in its box for a long time.
I already have it on pre-ordered too, at Entertainmentearth.com It's $54.99 there, but they say it won't be out until April. I think that gives everyone plenty of time to save their pennies.

A whole lot of things in this country are not priced based on the cost of manufacture, but what they think people are willing to pay for it. Marketing is marketing, just part of the process.

Trouble with that though: I was planning on *not* opening the NECA's so if I open The Lawgiver, I'll have to be careful with the packaging I guess...
PS: As far as my not opening the NECAs, I am not doing that because I think they'll be worth money some day, I just have no need to open them, they look good enough displayed boxed up (in my opinion anyway)...

Sounds like you want the Lawgiver for the
Megos, so I'd open it. But I open them anyway, and store them in plastic bags.
More fun to display, easier to store. For the NECAs I've been cutting a slit in
the top of the plastic (not the front) and sliding them out. The packaging is
not mint but you can put them back in and it's hard to tell it's been
opened.
