20th Century Fox has set an industry record for 2014 revenue$ (unadjusted for inflation)

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-fox-box-office-record-20150105-story.html"

I fairly recently read an interview of one of the directors of 20th Century Fox and she said Fox is happy to be focusing so much on making socially conscious movies of substance.

I think we POTA fans are happy that they are, too, aren't we? :-)

Happy 2015 to all, from Houston...

I admit I didn't see that one coming but in the end if it calls for doing it right, then power to them. In the meantime, my apes Twitter account will be on a long vacation. I'd say about til mid 2016. Now going into hyper sleep :)

Depends. Yes, Veetus, that's what you'll be wearing, Depends, when Fox announces the 25th APES movie set for the 70th Anniversary of PLANET in 2038.

Not surprised by this news at all. I hope it means a better screenplay will result, so I expect the addition of another writer, and there's always the possibility that creative differences will arise and even Matt Reeves could drop out. More time just means more possibilities for more things to happen. We'll see. I hate to have to wait longer, but then all good things come to those that wait, don't they?

It's been almost a year since Fox announced that "Apes 3" would be released in July 2016 but scratch that. Now it's 7/14/17. That means no 50th anniversary "Apes" movie in 2018. That means no "Apes" movie in the Year of the Monkey (2016). : (
The director has said it's going to be a very ambitious movie, but no reason has been given for the move. Fox's comic book movies "X-Men" and "Fantastic 4" still seem on track for sequels 2 years after their last ones but "Apes" is being given more time. Could it be script probs? Dunno.
Where does that leave "Apes" competish-wise? So far it looks sandwiched between the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" (July 7) and the next "Thor" (July 28).

Meanwhile you can dig Al's twitter for Star Wars 7, featuring Andy Serkis and directed by Matt Reeves' compadre J. J. Abrams (Abrams decided on Andy after a very early screening of "Dawn").
You won't be able to escape it, so you might as well hear it from Al, the Picasso of the PC.

Unfortunately, you can't pre-order.  La La Land Records will post it on their website on January 13th, next Tuesday, and I'm not sure how many they're going to press.  It might be a limited run, only 1500, or they might do the usual 3000.  Anyway, I'll post links to order this when it appears.

Here's MWC Toys' review of the second wave of "Dawn of the POTA" action figures. I liked the first set but this adds nothing and at $20 a pop (plus terrific Classic Apes figs beckoning) these have to be better. I can't imagine where else they can go with this and with "Apes 3" pushed back until 2017, it might be time to retire this series for now.

I've been a little disappointed with Dawn's place in the critics' Top 10 lists for 2014 that I've seen. "Dawn" seems to have been pushed aside in peoples' memories and I don't have much hope when the Oscar noms are announced on Thursday (I think FX is in the bag and there's a good chance POTA will win this time). "Dawn" seems to have lost out in the memory banks to other sci-fi flicks like "Edge of Tomorrow", "Interstellar", "Snowpiercer" and especially "Guardians of the Galaxy" (the debate about whether "Rise" is better still seems in play). But my boys the Schmoes picked up the slack. Right on.

But overall with the general public, until apes are in full gear and fully talking will apes have a really lasting impression as it was with the classics. So I feel the best is yet to come. And hopefully sooner than later. Last thing I wanna see is Apes go in the same direction as Night at the Museum. Where is was just more of the same and in the end people just grew tired of it.

I think it's ridiculous to call DAWN the best movie of the year.  In terms of the very commercial summer blockbusters, DAWN is right up there near the top, but the best of all the movies of the year?  No, sorry, I can't agree.

Since getting DAWN on Blu-ray, I'm surprised by how boring I'm finding it already.  When you get right down to it, DAWN had a very thin and somewhat predictable script.  I think RISE has the better script.  DAWN beats it in the technical department, but there needs to be more than just SFX razzle-dazzle.  DAWN just isn't quite as deep as I think its director thinks it is.  I'm glad they've delayed the release of the next one only in the hope that they'll try harder this time for a more substantive script and a plot that isn't so "summer blockbustery."

This I totally agree with.  It's a little disappointing to hear a little of what Rupert Wyatt planned for the sequel, with the apes going into the cities and taking over the human habitats and assuming their lives in strange and bizarre ways, like trying to get cars to work again, because that goes right back to the kind of satire Boulle was trying.  Reeves and Mark Bomback chose to take a slightly different approach and, for me, it comes across as kind of delaying what the concept can fully do, so yeah, I completely agree, Alex, the new franchise isn't yet in full gear.  They're barely out of first.  The next one is going to have to be very good indeed, or I fear the franchise may stall.

I'm in no position to say whether "Dawn" is the best movie of the year since I haven't seen most of the movies being touted. Professional critics (including the Schmoes) have the advantage of free screenings and movie screeners for their home so they can see as much as possible. But I can honestly say I like "Dawn" more as I see it, not less. The human roles especially have grown on me. I see more in Jason Clarke's performance every time. I think "Rise" has the more interesting situation, being set in the human world (like "Escape"). There's more to play with. "Dawn" has the more boring scenario of the apes finding their way (like "Battle"). It's neither fish (the human world) nor fowl (apes with their own civilization). But it doesn't bore me. The ape performances (not just the technical) are endlessly fascinating, and any way you want to slice it, the music, the design, the directorial touches, are as good as any movie I saw from 2014 (so far).

Seeing that Matt Reeves wants to bring back Koba with a trilogy still to be completeted, there's no doubt that we're headed for another pre-gear sort of speak. Which is fine if they have a good script on hand. But anything beyond that and their pretty much gonna be walking on egg shells if they don't advance the apes further.

As for Andy, Jeff, if he wasn't considered for Golden Globes, I wouldn't be holding my breath for the Oscars. That's not gonna chance until a mo-cap category is created. That's not what Andy wants but I really don't see it happening any other way as long as they continue seeing it as a mo-cap/CGI collaboration.

One thing "Dawn of the POTA" has going for it this awards season is the FX, and the the Visual Effects Society has bestowed many nominations on it for their awards: Best FX for a FX-driven movie, Best Character (2, for Caesar and Koba), Best Virtual Cinematography and Best Compositing. Also, Matt Reeves' good buddy and partner through much of his career J. J. Abrams will receive the Visionary Award. J. J. will also announce the Oscar nominations Thursday so maybe that will be good luck for "Dawn" (in case you haven't heard, J. J. directed the new "Star Wars" movie so he's all that in Hollywood right now).

I don't think there's a chance Andy (or Toby) will get a nomination but I was thinking along the lines of one of those wild surprise Best Picture nominations sci-fi movies sometimes get (like "District 9"). If that happened it would probably go to "Interstellar" (which I wasn't crazy about but it has prestige and isn't a sequel). If that happens it will probably win Best FX, since FX has always gone to a Best Pic nominee (if there is one) since I think the '70's. The last 6 Best FX winners have all been Best Pic nominees. "Rise" lost out to "Hugo".

There's always that chance that the Oscars will throw a curve ball as they do every once and a while with their nominations. Anything is possible. And Andy does deserve it.

I don't know. Reeves and Abrams childhood friends and both working with Andy Serkis? And now Abrams announcing the Oscar nominations? If there was ever a time, it would be now. If not, never in a million stellar light years lol. For adventure, let's see what happens tomorrow morning.

It's weird that all the announcers are sci-fi based: Abrams (Star Trek/Star Wars); Chris Pine (Abrams' Capt. Kirk); Alfonso Cuaron (the first Best Director for a sci-fi film, "Gravity"). Considering how little the Academy honors sci-fi (never a Best Picture winner), it's just...fascinating, captain.

This all happened BEFORE Tim Burton selected him as our modern day Taylor. Mr. Heston, off the screen, was a champion for civil rights. Marky-Mark was the antithesis of them. What was Burton smoking?

Unfortunately Matt Damon (who stars in a marooned-on-Mars movie this year) was too busy with an Oceans 11 sequel to be available for the role. So Burton brought in the crotch-grabbing Boogie Knights actor with this sordid past. DID POTA 2001 make more money because of Markie Mark's participation or in spite of it? Is there a single prominent actor in Hollywood nowadays with a more sordid past than our modern day Taylor? :-(

"Dawn" joined "Birdman" in getting the most nominations for sound editing from the Motion Picture Sound Editors. Both got 3; "Dawn" got it for Best English Feature, Best FX sound editing and Best Music editing. That's two groups where "Dawn" got the most noms (FX, snd editing). Could that make it 2 Oscar noms tomorrow?

Taylor states that they've been in flight for six months, and from the shot of the time clock at the beginning, you worked it backwards.

So if a movie does well at the box office, and / or is released before November or December, it's likely to be snubbed by the modern day Oscar crew?

Silence of the Lambs broke that trend, but apparently sort of just temporarily.   Apes movies have never gotten what they deserve from the so-called Academy.   I don't waste much time following the Oscars as a result.

I remember when I considered myself lucky to have Return recorded on VHS from WPIX in the late 80's, thinking this would be as good as it gets because it would never get released on video. I am hoping to also be proven wrong on Emergency+4 (cartoon version of the Emergency! TV show)

.html.htmlJust an FYI, I ordered this on the day it was released and received it today (one week later), so it should start showing up in your mailboxes soon if it hasn't already...

I haven't played it yet, so I can't comment on the sound quality, but I did do a very quick glance at the liner notes... Not only do they include a picture of Zira, Cornelius, and Milo from ESCAPE, but the liner notes author says that Ron Harper was cast as *Burke* and James Naughton was *Virdon*. He also states that the TV series "movies" included the *unaired* episode "Up Above the World So High", refers to Fauna from "The Deception" as *Farna*,(oh yeah, "Farna" falls in love with *Virdon*, not Burke!) and states that *Virdon* is the one subjected to brainwashing in "The Interrogation"... I am sure there are other mistakes, but those just jumped out at me upon glancing at the notes...

I'm sure you're all aware of the soundtrack in question, but in case you missed the recent posts containing the information, here it is again:

They always get things wrong in the liner notes.  I don't know what's happened to proof-reading.

By the way, I ordered my CD from a different seller, the one I usually use for soundtracks, and it looks like I won't get my copy until February.  I can wait though, but if I'd known there'd be this delay, I'd have ordered directly from LLL.

.html.htmlJust a heads up to anyone who is buying/did buy this release: Beware of track 61 on disc 2 ("Wind Machine")... When I was playing disc 2 and it hit that track, I thought my disc was defective... It was only until I looked at the track listing that I seen the title of that bit and realized the noise made sense... That said, it is 1:04 of some of the most grating noise you'll ever hear on a CD...<.html<.html

I was just signing on to post that they mixed Virdon and Burke's names up! With such in depth writing, it's hard to believe they could make such an error. Just heard Jeff Bond, who wrote the liner notes, on the Optical podcast talking about his Evolution book and he's very POTA knowledgeable. Don't have the Evolution book on hand at the moment. Did he switch them in there too?

By the way, I ordered my CD from a different seller, the one I usually use for soundtracks, and it looks like I won't get my copy until February.  I can wait though, but if I'd known there'd be this delay, I'd have ordered directly from LLL.

I've gotten this response from Jeff Bond on the Film Score Monthly message board about the discrepancies in the liner notes:

Wait, Burke and Virdon are different characters?  I'm mortified to admit I did transpose those names. They always seemed to use their first names on the show, but this is a pretty epic mistake even by my standards. I always thought of Ron Harper as Burke! My apologies to all Apes fans and you can just ignore me going forward.
In regards to the character of Fauna, she is referred to as "Farna" in all the music track cues so that's how that change cropped up. I believe that's something that was actually discussed because you cannot change the track titles due to publishing/copyright concerns, so we stuck with the name used in the track titles.

Good for you. A marvelous vacation for any POTA fan. I was in the LA area back in 2006 but could not get to any of the filming sites. The Conquest mall and Point Dume were high on my list of places I wanted to visit. I don't know if I'll ever have a chance, but it'll always be on my wish list.
What's really frustrating is when I hear friends visiting those places and not even being POTA fans.

Rory, I don't think you'll have any problem finding a souvenir.  I was there in 2008 and the hillside behind the Ape City site was covered with small broken pieces of concrete.  The piece I took for a souvenir was a small one with the mesh backing, just like what was shown in the video.

I do wish these guys had filmed their video in the summer, instead of winter.  The angle of the sun and the lack of foliage on the trees just doesn't make as good a comparison to the movie as it could have been.  I was there in late June and it was like being there in the summer of 1967.

                      Thanks for posting this, Dario.

That's good to know.  I'm likely to go there in July, so it should be a very POTAish hot place, though with the drought Southern Cal has been having I'm not sure how green it will be.  My trip isn't definite yet, so I don't know when it'll actually be.
I've forgotten to mention this, but several months ago I got the entire series "Daniel Boone" on DVD.  It was a Fox show and made much use of the Fox Ranch, especially in the first season and so much so that's it's often impossible to suspend disbelief watching what's supposed to be Kentucky.  Anyway, there's a couple episodes during the beginning of the fourth season that were shot at the Ranch around the time PLANET was in production, and you'll see them use the waterfall at the rock pool, though not with as many hoses providing the falls as in the movie, and although they didn't use it in any of the episodes, there's a shot in one where you can see the cornfield in the background.  Later in the season (probably shot in the fall of '67), Boone and his Indian friend, Mingo, are on the area where the cornfield was and it's all gone.  Also there's an episode where they're standing on the causeway that was built in front of Ape City to get across Century Lake, at the spot where the Lawgiver statue stood.  Someday I'll post screen captures.  I haven't yet watched episodes that would have been shot when BENEATH was in production, but I have watched one with James Gregory running around the Ranch, two years before he'd play Ursus.
