A large color image of Heston getting hosed in PLANET with the words "It's a Madhouse!" on it would be better.

Zira oil painting by Graham Hill for an upcoming Spanish Planet of the Apes book (by Saulo Adami). The frame inset is just a bit too big revealing a part of the piece not intended to be in the finish, but the frame will have to do until I can find a slightly smaller one. I spray painted a white inset with a lime paint I had lying around and it came out perfect so I'll try to do that again when I get a better frame.

From the Wikipedia page:

He played many roles on the Broadway stage, including several Shakespearean ones, usually opposite actor Maurice Evans. After playing two roles in one of Evans's productions of Hamlet, he played Horatio opposite Evans's Hamlet in a 1953 Hallmark Hall of Fame television production of the work, the most prestigious American production of the play seen on television up to that time.

I recall Evans mentioning him in his book, "All This... and Evans Too!"
Addy is probably best remembered today as the corrupt doctor on trial in the Paul Newman movie produced by Richard Zanuck, THE VERDICT.

Subject: David Oyelowo talks "Rise of the POTA"
.html
.html
David Oyelowo received raves this winter for his performance as Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Best Picture nominee "Selma". But some felt his director and he weren't properly rewarded with nominations too and it's led to a controversy this Oscar season. Obviously the problem is that Hollywood is gun shy about casting actors of color in leading roles, unless they are specific names like Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson; or if it's specifically targeted to a racial audience, like Tyler Perry's movies; or it's a specific history lesson, like "Selma" or "12 Years A Slave". As Oyelowo sez: "The only way I get a leading role in a studio picture is if Ryan Gosling can't play it, which is clearly the case with "Selma". If this was a non-color-specific character, it wouldn't be me. It just wouldn't".
Anyway, he also mentioned how "Rise" was able to go deeper (he played Jacobs): "I know not everything is the same as playing Dr. King. "Rise of the POTA" is not a film I walk away from thinking, "OK, that's fundamentally about the enrichment of people's lives". But it is thought-provoking. And the fact that it smuggles elements of the civil rights movement into the story of an ape uprising - well, that has value for me, it's a very conscious decision to follow my heart rather than the dollar".

I'm not watching the Oscars this year (I didn't watch last year, either.).  The entire Oscar "thing" has, for me, been going downhill for a long time now.  I don't like what they've done with the awards show and this year's mostly white nominations is a disgrace.  So, even though DAWN is probably going to win Best SFX, I won't be watching.  I'm done with the Academy Awards.  They can stick it.

Subject: [pota] David Oyelowo talks "Rise of the POTA"

BAFTA, the "British Oscars", awarded "Interstellar" the Best FX trophy. Recently "Dawn" won at the Visual Effects Society Award (actually it won 3: Best FX film; Best Character - Caesar; and Best Compositing). Obviously "Interstellar" is sticking it's nose where it doesn't belong but we can still win the Oscar! Now I want everybody to get out there and... I don't know, what do we do?

I thought INTERSTELLAR was almost instantly forgettable, but then I'm already bored by DAWN.  I really think that in a century neither movie will be that well remembered.... but PLANET and 2001 will still be.  The classics are the classics.

If you get Turner Classic Movies -- and hopefully in HD -- next week, as part of their February salute to the Oscars, TCM will be showing PLANET OF THE APES (this will be the third time now) at 10 PM eastern, right after BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (in another upgraded transfer).  As I've posted before, TCM is now showing some films in true HD and the transfer of PLANET that they now have is better than what's on the 2008 Blu-ray.  The next night, two more Frank Schaffner classics will be shown, PATTON and PAPILLON.

They're probably going for different looks. Veska has a memorable look. Most POTA gorillas, chimps, orangs look the same. But Julius, Veska, the Ape-O-Nauts (probably next) have unique looks.
I reckon there's not much more they can do with the new movies so they'll probably concentrate on the originals. They might even start doing POTA2001.

NECA wuz asked about future plans for their Apes line and tweeted that it's "too uncertain to say anything definitive right now". Which suggests sales are iffy. As usual. But I'm glad these companies keep giving "Apes" a shot.

Series 3 seems pretty certain, but I'm not holding my breath for anything after that... The Lawgiver statue and the three TV series officers seem hopeful, anyting after that is, as they say, frosting on the cake...

If you don't understand the love for the TV series, why'd you buy the soundtrack? :)

Because I'm a complicated, perplexing person.

Seriously, because I collect soundtracks and although I'm not crazy about the music from the TV show, just as I'm not crazy about the music of Leonard Rosenman, I still collect it to have, mostly for reference, like the references to Goldsmith's score to the original, which we now have with this 2-CD set.  For me, it wasn't a "must have," but more a "get it or you may regret not getting it in the future for some reason you have no idea about now, but you never know" kind of thing -- and also because spending $30 on such a thing is no big deal for me.

OK, so it looks like either "Dawn" or "Interstellar" will take home the Oscar on Sunday. Tradition seems to be leaning toward "Interstellar". It won the BAFTA, the "British Oscar". Since it first awarded FX in 1983 there have been 33 winners, though we can only compare 32 since, well, they haven't awarded the Oscar yet. Out of 32 winners, 12 have not won the Oscar. Since 2000, BAFTA and Oscar have disagreed only 3 times.
Meanwhile, "Dawn" was the big winner at the Visual FX Society (kind of like the Guild awards: Director's Guild, Writer's Guild, etc.). It won 3: Best FX movie (the biggie), Best Compositing and Best Character (Caesar); "Interstellar" won one: Best Created Environment (since "Dawn" mostly used real environments; forest, streets). Added to that is their fellow Oscar nominee "X-Men: Daze of Future Past" won two: Best Virtual Cinematography and Best Simulations.
So it would seem "Interstellar" has the edge. In 2011, BAFTA and Oscar disagreed but neither chose "Rise" (BAFTA picked "Harry Potter", the Oscar went to "Hugo"). So we can also add a PR problem: "Apes" just don't get no respect. There were many who felt "Rise" was robbed and that may play into the vote this year. But it's no sure thing.
Will the Academy once again say, "Take your stinkin' paws off that Oscar, you damn dirty "Apes"!"?

The film was an Oscar winner for its simian makeup. Rod Serling and Michael Wilson adapted the script from a novel by Pierre Boulle. The film spawned a number of sequels and a short-lived TV series and was remade in 2001.

I know you'll remember if DAWN wins, as will the "we," which includes me, but in the long run, if it loses, who cares?  Only the SFX guys that win, that's who, because it'll mean more gigs and money, but for everyone else, it pretty much means not much more than a footnote.

But Chambers did not "win" the Award.  He was granted it by the Academy Board of Governors after Fox and Jacobs launched a campaign to get him it (much like the studio did the year before to "get" DOCTOR DOLITTLE a nomination for Best Picture).  They essentially "bought" the Award for him, and I'm fine with that.  Good for John Chambers.

We just disagree on the lasting value of the Oscars.  I think the awards show, and all industry awards to its own product, are an affront to film as art.  It's shallow and stupid and I stopped caring about the Oscars decades ago.  I'm just not into it.

Good point, James, but I do have to remind you that the official title of the organization behind the Oscars is "The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences."  Do not most in the motion picture industry call themselves artists and get angry if you disparage that, especially the actors?
As a film buff, I like to think of movies as art, no matter how commercial they may be in order to finance the production of them.  Do I really love the original PLANET OF THE APES because of how well it's done commercially?  Of course not, and neither should you.  It's because of what we see in it that is, for lack of a better term at least, art.  Do they really give out Oscars for "Best Commerciality"?  At some point, no matter how shallow or hypocritical it may be, regard for the efforts as art has to come into it.  My problem with the awards is the same as why George C. Scott refused his award for PATTON -- artists should not have to compete with one another.  There is no "best" in art, only the opinion of its connoisseurs.  After a lifetime of watching which films and actors and directors get Oscars and which don't, and what doesn't even get nominated, I simply have little if any faith in the competency of most Academy members that vote on these things.  The politics of it, that really make it a mess, in my opinion, render it meaningless.

I don't think it's a case of them "buying" Chambers an Oscar. If that was the case there would've been a lot more "honorary" makeup Oscars. Chambers' was only the 2nd in history. Obviously it costs a lot of money to campaign for an Oscar, then and especially now. Fox spent a pretty penny campaigning for "Dawn". Ultimately I think Chambers received it because they felt he was deserving.
I don't think the Oscars are a good yardstick of art. It's like an election campaign. But it is a cultural touchstone; the title "Oscar winner" has meaning. And if "Dawn" wins tonight it will be a nice echo to Chambers' Oscar 45 + years ago.

Wow!  I'm really getting misunderstood here.  I never meant to imply that Chambers didn't deserve his award.  You bet your ass he deserved it -- for whatever it's worth.  I'm just saying that he didn't "win" it.  He wasn't in competition with any other makeup guy.  It was an "Honorary Award" and that's just the plain fact of it.

I don't know if Morton Haack deserved an Oscar for his costume design -- which IS an art form, James! -- but I sure as hell believe that Jerry Goldsmith's score (a true work of art, James!) to PLANET should have won that night, and I further believe that time has proven that.

If DAWN wins Best SFX tonight it'll be the first APES movie to actually win an Oscar.  All I'm saying is that I couldn't care less.  If it wins, nice, but I really don't put much value on an Oscar Award.

And you want to have the view that movies aren't art?   Really?  I can't understand how you can appreciate any movie without seeing it as art on some level.
And James, you do know that Walt Disney, of course long dead, was an anti-Semitic, anti-union, pro-HUAC commitee "run the liberal Jews out of the business," right-wing conservative boneheaded prick, don't you?  You didn't see "Saving Mr. Banks" did you -- and believe it?  The movie industry hasn't referred to Disney for decades as "The Rat" for nothing and I wouldn't take his judgement on much of anything, and as far as I know, Lily Tomlin isn't exactly a rocket scientist either, but to each his own.

Oh, and I forgot to add this...
Remember the biggest Hollywood studio there was during it's golden age, MGM?  Well, they had a little motto on their company logo, the one that featured Leo the lion.  It read "Ars Gratia Artis", a Latin phrase meaning "Art for art's sake."  While I would agree that the motto is a little pretentious, I wouldn't agree that it means nothing when it comes to American motion pictures.

No different. I said the line looks like it's struggling, and it is, but it sounds like they are determined to continue. Good 4 them.

The acclaimed TV show "Mad Men" is coming to an end this May and AMC has been showing some ads (rerun often) with famous people talking about "Mad Men" and why they like it. Currently the show has been running Sunday mornings and I've been taping them. Of course since it's set in the '60's they did an ep that referenced POTA ("The Flood", about the Martin Luther King assassination). I just came across one of those ads where Dana Gould comments on that episode and shows his copy of "The Ape" newspaper.

For the hell of it, I jotted down what Dana sez: "I am a huge fan of POTA. And I often wondered when they got up to 1968 if they would reference it. What really struck me was in the (movie) theater Don (Draper) is reading this newspaper called The Ape. This was a real thing. I am a POTA nut and I actually have my copy of The Ape. So I was really blown away by the attention to detail. And if you come in close (with the camera) it was 5 frailins. And that was back when 5 frailins was a lot of money".

I don't believe there's been an announcement yet, but according to EntertainmentEarth.com, where I've been ordering this Neca stuff from, next month the 8-inch clothed gorilla is supposed to come out, and then in April Neca's Lawgiver statue.  Nothing further.  I didn't know the 8" clothed Taylor figure is already out and EE.com is already out-of-stock on them.

From what I understand, Wave 3 is Conquest Caesar and Gorilla plus Urko. According to the NECA Apes fans, March 8 is "Buy an Ape Day", when Wave 3 is supposed to hit. But in any case it's supposed to be the day we show solidarity with the struggling line.

Excellent info guys! Keep it coming.

Thanks to mlcougar who tipped me off that the Toys'R'us Canada website was offering the exclusive Gorilla 2 Pack, I was able to reserve and pick that up just yesterday. And just a few days ago while checking out the my main NECA source comic store, I was surprised to find the suited Taylor.

Will definitely be picking up all the 'classic' apes NECA puts out, and some of the 'rise/dawn' figures. So far I've only passed on Maurice, but if he gets discounted at some point I may get him just for the sake of completeness.

Personally, I think Maurice rocks. He doesn't look like just any orangutan, he's Maurice, dead on. I gave him Koba's spear and he's good to go. I've got Series 1 Caesar, Koba and Maurice and they are a perfect representation of NuApes. If NECA were to do Mrs. Caesar with flowers in her hair I'd get her but otherwise I think I'm done with NuApes until further notice.

Sorry, I got Taylor from Toyz-R-Us (literally the day of Taylor's launch, Jan. 14) and was going to mention it but never did.  : (

I know, I make the same argument about the POTA DVDs and Blu-rays, but a General Aldo figure is a reminder of a movie I really wish had come out better.  I'll keep considering it.  I didn't buy all the Sideshows either, sticking to only figures from the first movie, except the naked figures of Taylor and Nova, which I didn't like because you could see the doll joints and it looks silly.  I didn't get Brent or a mutant (I think there were two) and I didn't get Ursus (and weren't there two solider gorillas from the TV series?).  I guess that makes me partially responsible for the death of that line.  By the way, the only Neca figure I've taken out of its box, and it's still out, is General Ursus.

I don't remember if these shots have been posted but they're the best I've seen of the NECA apes at Toy Fair (plus they can be magnified). I guess the Lawgiver statue is coming up soon, then Series 3 with Conquest Caesar (looks really good), Conquest Gorilla and GENERAL! Aldo. Series 4 I guess will be Julius, Urko and TV's Veska. If they have to stop after that, well, that's still a damn good run. And also the 8" Megoesque Gorilla (which I'm not crazy about) to go with Taylor.

How they missed putting a bandolier on the 8" plush gorilla, I don't understand.

.html.htmlI'm with you, I'm not crazy about the missing bandolier either...

In a post on the Mego Museum, one guy mentioned that it's been speculated that the missing bandolier is a cost saving measure... I don't know how accurate or inaccurate that is though...
