Sorry, can't agree that "Battle" is better than "Dawn". Just because it's not like the old movies doesn't mean it should be written off. I dig "Battle" and realize it was an impossible situation budget-wise. I see 3 eras of POTA: the originals, the Burton movie, and the new ones. I'm very pleased with both "Rise" and "Dawn" and assume "War" will give us a worthy conclusion before we head into more familiar POTA territory. CG gives them a unique opportunity to tell stories that just couldn't be told with makeup (ape-like apes). At this point in time, Hollywood is ga ga over franchises and POTA will be around for a long time. The sky is the limit.

In addition to original costumes, makeup, and sets (as opposed to a CGI crapfest) BATTLE also offers much more in terms of actual story/characters than spending 2+ hours watching a film about people trying to flip on a power switch...

Yeah, DAWN is a better movie than BATTLE, but still DAWN is thin
story-wise.

I've always been a tactile reader and really prefer the hardcopy version. I even printed out and spiral bound the few early issues I missed out on. I knew there was only going to be a limited print run but I was ready to pounce on any announcement. Did I miss the announcement?

If you think about it, Battle and Dawn are very similar in structure.

They both have a simplistic overall arcing story line ( "Flip a switch" vs. "I wanna see a few minutes of video of Mon and Pop and I'm willing travel to a radiated city for that"), but the REAL meat of the movie in both cases are the human vs. ape conflict, and (even better in both cases) the ape vs. ape conflict.

I think Battle's Caesar/Aldo conflict is better than Dawn's Caesar/Koba, but Dawn ape/human conflict wins out over Kolp in a schoolbus.

The biggest thing that bothers me about DAWN is they didn't shoot it in
Panavision. DAWN lacks proper "scope." But, because of the damn 3D
gimmick, I guess that'll be the case with the next one too.

In addition to original costumes, makeup, and sets (as opposed to a
CGI crapfest) BATTLE also offers much more in terms of actual
story/characters than spending 2+ hours watching a film about people
trying to flip on a power switch...

Dario, you could try e-mailing him.  There's always a chance he might have one or two left.

It's annoying to me as well because I have a full run of the printed issues and kinda wanted to continue as well. Best thing to do in future is to get in early as soon as each news issue is announced. I know he keeps a limited run but they go quickly.

Yeah I really miss the 2.35:1 aspect ratio.  And yes I do believe this is related to 3-D, which to me is like being kicked when you're down. For me, the sooner this 3-D fad disappears the world will be a better place.  Cheaper ticket prices (you will not believe the price here in the UK) plus not being forced out of the best screens just because you want to see it flat.

Grrr...

Dawn is so much like Battle, it's crazy.

The bus

Emphasis on Caesar's son

Video of Caesar's parent (James Franco/Cornelius and Zira)

Final battle up high with the villain falling to their death

Villain declaring martial law and caging humans

Smart orang (Maurice/Virgil)

Yet, the director sez he hadn't seen "Battle" since he wuz a kid and those weren't intentional (maybe the screenwriter?)

As far as the story being thin, I don't have a problem with it. The director intentionally pulled back to give us a "primitive ape" story (the "Rise" director was going to have the apes move into the human city and try all the gadgets: cars, etc.). Fans are impatient for familiar POTA territory but looking back "Dawn" might give us some nice variety. And I thought the Koba storyline was pretty powerful. The CG is top notch (and planned to be better in the next one). Down the road in our old age homes, we might decide "Dawn" wuz the correct way to go, by cracky! Where's my Jell-o?

Yeah, DAWN is a better movie than BATTLE, but still DAWN is thin
story-wise.

Sorry, can't agree that "Battle" is better than "Dawn". Just because
it's not like the old movies doesn't mean it should be written off. I
dig "Battle" and realize it was an impossible situation budget-wise. I
see 3 eras of POTA: the originals, the Burton movie, and the new ones.
I'm very pleased with both "Rise" and "Dawn" and assume "War" will give
us a worthy conclusion before we head into more familiar POTA
territory. CG gives them a unique opportunity to tell stories that just
couldn't be told with makeup (ape-like apes). At this point in time,
Hollywood is ga ga over franchises and POTA will be around for a long
time. The sky is the limit. Sent from Mail for Windows 10

I have no issues with glacially-paced films if there's interesting stories/characters and it eventually goes somewhere. Older films like THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN (1971) and SORCERER (1977) move slowly but keep you involved the whole time, and even modern releases like the recent adaptations of TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY (2011) and A MOST WANTED MAN (2014) had great payoffs if you were a patient viewer. I remember literally being an hour into DAWN and wondering when something- ANYTHING- was actually going to happen.

100% in agreement.  What we are seeing now are screenplays produced by writers who grew up watching television in the 1970s and have limited intellectual scope.  You just can't compare a fanboy like Matt Reeves to a genius like Paul Dehn.  There used to be epic themes and a sense of wonder and now there's Saturday morning serials.  New generation Hollywood tries so very hard but lacks the vision.

We are in the era of imitation. Everything in the current state of
big studio franchises plays like fan fiction.

That said, I've seen both RISE and DAWN around five times each and each
time I see more in them, but also a lot that's not in them that should
be. In a way, the makers of the new APES movies are taking the concept
too seriously and are forgetting that social satire is what made the
            old series "fun."

I took some solace in the operatic grandeur of the Caesar vs Koba conflict in DAWN.  Very Shakesperian.

But how was the big finale any different from the end of THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2?  Then again you had the very final scene, which helped.

I just wish in my heart of hearts that Matt Reeves and co would move the story on.  How many times can we see a remake of BATTLE?  This current crop will continue to be APES in name only until we get into time travel, astronauts and spaceships.

But that's fanboy wish fulfillment as well, isn't it?

            Mark.

I'd actually disagree with that. In BATTLE, the trip to the Forbidden City to watch the video is a small part of the story and it- eventually- serves to brings the mutated humans into the story and the two overall conflicts in the film: the Apes vs the mutated humans, and Caesar vs Aldo. In DAWN, flipping the power switch on was pretty much the sum & substance of it- aside from some internal strife among the ape society.

I love that scene is BATTLE.  I love the great Leonard Rosenman's score.  I love the images of the trio walking in silhouette over the dunes.  I even love the very first shot -- another one of those beautifully obvious "Oh it's Roddy's double again" -- that were so prevalent in the TV series.

The more I think about the new movies the less interested I am.  Their budgets get bigger and their scope, scale and sense of wonder gets smaller.  BENEATH created this huge world for something like a $5m price tag.  Now they spend $150 and we get some unimpressive CGI set extension and a movie that looks like TV on the big screen because it's shot onto a sensor and not a 35mm negative, plus they can't shoot anamorphic because it's not good for 3D.   Who wants 3D anyway?  I don't remember anyone actually asking for it.

Sorry, but it really WAS better in the 70s.

DP Michael Seresin is shooting WAR on the Arri Alexa 65, which is still digital but gives me hope that the new resurgence in this super large format means we might be able to see a 70mm APES film in the next 18 months.

For me, the renewed interest in this tech (as in HATEFUL EIGHT) is the best tonic cinema could ever hope to receive after the vilest of vile -- 3D - reared its ugly head a few years back.

Unfortunately, the '70s are long over with and never coming back (thank goodness -- the '60s was better).

Let's not get into too much fantasy... 70mm is NOT making a comeback. It's just another gimmick now, and it's too expensive to make a comeback. In fact, there never has been a lot of 70mm projection EVER, outside of the original IMAX, and even that has gone digital. Film is now mostly for preservation.

If any of you have Netflix, check out the documentary SIDE BY SIDE. Pretty interesting.

I just think they're afraid to get too weird with that much money on the line. It didn't help the new "Mad Max" (one of the most acclaimed movies of the year). The new franchises ARE TV now ("tune in in 3 years for the next exciting episode") but I liked the new "Apes". They were about more than "flipping a switch". Hopefully Woody Harrelson will give us a little more going on in the human department.

I think the next one will finish off drab San Francisco and then we'll head into more familiar POTA environs (with new directors). Good or bad, movies are what they are today. I enjoy having different Apes from different eras. It's survived. Nobody's taking away the originals.

2016 is the Year of the Monkey on Chinese calendars (actually it starts Feb. 8th, the anniversary of the original POTA movie, which also came out in the Year of the Monkey). POTA seems pretty much dead this year except what news we get from "War For the POTA". So we're pretty much on our own to celebrate. Happy New Year!

Hey, for this Year of the Monkey, everyone here in the States knows that the original PLANET OF THE APES will be back in theatres this July, right? Actually two days, July 24th and 27th, but the 24th will be a Sunday (the day I first saw PLANET on back in '68), the movie will be shown at 2 and 7 PM, so most everyone here, if you're near a theatre showing it, should have no excuse for not going. I'm going to have to drive thirty-four miles to get to the theatre nearest me -- but I'm going!

Google Fathom Events and TCM to find out more.

2016 is the Year of the Monkey on Chinese calendars (actually it starts Feb. 8th, the anniversary of the original POTA movie, which also came out in the Year of the Monkey). POTA seems pretty much dead this year except what news we get from “War For the POTA”. So we’re pretty much on our own to celebrate. Happy New Year!

Fun fact: 7/18/16 is the day the apes monkey on the Golden Gate Bridge (according to the newspaper in “Rise”).

Just curious... Where those digital projection or actual 35mm prints? I would guess it was digital, but that only means that it would have been a good transfer as we see on satellite and cable. What will be shown here in July will be a digital transfer, but it should be the same excellent one they've shown on Turner Classic Movies. On January 17th BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID will be shown. I'm going to try to catch that to preview PLANET in July.

This is marked on my calendar.  A local theater has been showing these TCM movies over the last year or so.  I saw Ben Hur and Spartacus in 2015 and enjoyed them both.  They were digital projections but the quality wasn't bad at all.  Now I finally get to see the movie I've been watching on television (starting in 1973), and VHS, and DVD, and Blu-ray disc, on a big screen with real movie popcorn.  I can't wait.

Amiah Miller might be the luckiest girl on the POTA. She reportedly acted for two weeks in the new Ape movie for $65,000. Presumably she played the wild human child that has been mentioned, so two weeks gives a hint of the extent of the role. Maybe it is a coda at the end showing the future (a la "Battle")?

I'm surprised we haven't heard anything on this movie at all. Not even a synopsis.

Good grief. This is boring. Maybe I should just pull the plug and just wait till July 2017 like everyone else.

The "War For the POTA" gang is reportedly scheduled to go back to work today (1/5) after their holiday hiatus. YVR Shoots has a nice look at the main outdoor set, an ape prison.

                            Hey Rory,

Yes, they were all DCPs.  I have yet to be lucky enough to see a 35mm print.

We have a fantastic rep cinema in central London which will show prints if you ask them, but it's getting harder and harder to track the reels down.  PLANET is not impossible as it's a classic film and therefore much more accessible, but I reckon my dream of seeing the sequels projected on film has been dashed forever.

                            M.

Note: In the Ape City comics (1990), the apes in Europe were granted their freedom...also did Bush get re-elected or were the elections suspended? (Bush would have only served two terms in the real world.) And did the war with the Russians end with the Soviet Union still intact?

I wonder if Zaius or The Lawgiver, via the Secret Scrolls, had access to some of the documents shared in this story or news archives. That would explain even more why they had the opinions they did about humanity.

Note: In the Ape City comics (1990), the apes in Europe were granted their freedom

Interesting. But the Hasslein Institute is based on the films alone

...also did Bush get re-elected or were the elections suspended?

As stated in last week's installment, the elections were suspended in 1992.

And did the war with the Russians end with the Soviet Union still intact?

Well you'll just have to keep reading to find out. ;-)

In Battle it is stated that the nuclear war was 12 years earlier but Mandemus says he's been living in the Ape City armory for 27 years. Thus, there must have been 15 years of war before the final nuclear exchange which would have been in 2005 or 2006.

Apart from that, looking at people in these motion capture suits is a universe away from looking at behind-the-scenes photos from the original movies. Does nothing for me. I'd rather see what the CGI people are doing.

I'm just glad "Apes" is still at the forefront of FX. In the 60's it wuz makeup; now it's CG. I'm seeing a lot of trailers with realistic CG apes ("Tarzan", "Jungle Book") and POTA was there first. The difference between the apes in "Rise" and "Dawn" is significant, and Reeves has been promised the ones in "War" will go even further (they were developing their bag of tricks during "Dawn", plus they have more time to work on them).

I still think we'll get a DVD extra about Miss Roxanne.

Pretty girl, I'd like to know more about her. Is she an actress already? Funny, though, when he says can't wait to see her in the movie. No you won't -- she'll be covered in CGI. I wonder if she'll be in the end cedits?

Apart from that, looking at people in these motion capture suits is a universe away from looking at behind-the-scenes photos from the original movies. Does nothing for me. I'd rather see what the CGI people are doing.

To go back to something that I mentioned a long, long time ago, none of the original five film end on positive note- quite the opposite in fact. But there was still humor worked into the stores- even with BENEATH and CONQUEST which are arguably the darkest of the five films.

The only time I've really enjoyed the 3D gimmick is when it was used more as a background effect. For example, anytime you see Asgard in either of the Thor movies it's like looking at an old View-Master image. Ditto for Yogi Bear- the forest seemed to take on a life of it's own due to the depth brought with the 3D process. Two very different kinds of films, but neither **relied** on 3D to carry the story. Going back to old school film making, something like BENEATH worked because the people involved in the production had to use their actual imagination to create those sets and effects. Now, you press a few buttons and BOOM! Apes on the Golden Gate Bridge, "Caesar home now", etc. Bleep blorp.

Rosenman' s score.

<<<.html

A perfect example of this is the original 1968 film. The story itself took place over the course of several months and was perfectly paced to show that. By comparison, Burton's 2001 version was only supposed to take place over the course of a few day yet felt very rushed with way too much superfluous material crammed in. Especially the ham-handed cameo by Charlton Heston.

Unfortunately, it will be the theatrical version of BATTLE, and 16X9 cropped transfers with only PLANET in stereo, the sequels in mono.

At first I thought Caesar's son wouldn't be in "War" because I didn't see Nick Thurston in the cast. But it turns out Max Lloyd-Jones is playing "Blue Eyes" this time. Thurston did a good job in "Dawn" so I don't know what the deal is. The new POTA has generally kept the same ape actors in the roles, except for Koba, who was played by a stuntman in "Rise".

I don't see what difference it makes who plays the apes. Even if Serkis was replaced by someone else playing Caesar, would audiences even notice? Now, once
they start talking and the actor's are giving human-like performances, then it matters.

Yes but I think the discussion was about 'ape' motion capture CGI. 'Precious' doesn't count! ;)

But this made me think. Was King really motion capture. For some reason I thought he was 'pure' CGI and not motion-capture. I'll have to try to find out when I have some time later.

Serkis did motion capture in both "Lord of the Rings" and "King Kong" but it was very primitive. The new "Apes" owes more to the advances in "Avatar", and then "Apes" pushed it further, such as being able to film outside a studio. It keeps advancing.

But this made me think. Was King really motion capture. For some reason I thought he was 'pure' CGI and not motion-capture. I'll have to try to find out when I have some time later.
