It's still early days for Nu Apes. We haven't even arrived at the POTA. We've only seen the birth of a new breed.

My list:

  1. POTA68 2. Escape 3. Dawn 4. Rise 5. Conquest 6. Beneath 7. POTA2001 8. Battle

I've found that RISE and DAWN improve with repeated viewings, but they don't do anything for me that the original did and to a large extent still does.

Yet the originals stand up to repeated viewings, and Nu Apes bored me to tears. Literally all style, no substance.

BTW, that's ALL you got out of that entire posting? My (oft-stated) dislike for DAWN?

Whatever, it's a fairly common exchange. I don't believe they copied it from "Dark Knight Rises".

You should probably go back and rewatch the two clips. I'm not talking about a **single** line of dialog, but rather the exchange between the (respective) two characters in each of the films:

    "So, you came back to..."

    "No, I came back for..."

I honestly don't know how I can make that any clearer.

    me (again):

    >>That's probably a bit of a stretch. By that logic, Rise of the POTA stole the title from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Hannibal Rising etc etc. I'm talking about thinly disguised reworking of actual dialog from The Dark Knight Rises appearing in War for the POTA. <<

I never knew that. Wonder what he thought about James Franciscus rewriting the script? I also remember once reading (somewhere?) that the script was being modified on an almost daily basis while they were shooting, and I was curious if Dehn was involved in that as well. "Beneath" was Dehn's first so maybe he wasn't as territorial about it. It was considered a disappointment compared to the original and then Dehn came back with "Escape" (Jacobs' fave sequel) so he became the Arthur Miller of Apes. I remember Natalie Trundy talking fondly of Dehn coming to California and staying with them to write each script and then when it was done heading back to England. He became like family visiting. I don't think he was around for the shoots. On "Battle" his script was darker than they wanted to go and then he got sick and the Corringtons were brought in.

I think Dehn brought out the best in those sequels and was a visionary in his own right.

I think Natalie Trundy may have been misremembering.  Memos in the APJAC archive indicate Dehn stay a hotel in L.A. or was in England when writing the sequels.

      Jeffery,

Where did you get your info that Dehn stayed at the Jacobs residence when writing the POTA sequels?  I have info to the contrary.

I never knew that. Wonder what he thought about James Franciscus rewriting the script? I also remember once reading (somewhere?) that the script was being modified on an almost daily basis while they were shooting, and I was curious if Dehn was involved in that as well. Or Mort Abrahams since he shares the story credit with Dehn?

I remember Natalie Trundy talking fondly of Dehn coming to California and staying with them to write each script and then when it was done heading back to England. He became like family visiting.

I think Natalie Trundy may have been misremembering.  Memos in the APJAC archive indicate Dehn stay a hotel in L.A. or was in England when writing the sequels.

If what I've been told is correct, there's memos and copies of contracts in the APJAC archive at LMU that give the details of what Dehn was paid and where he would stay while in L.A. (a very famous hotel I can't recall right now) and his first-class plane flights to and from the States and such.

I don't doubt that he visited the Jacobs's in their home, had dinner, attended parties or maybe stayed a night or more, I just doubt the he did the writing of any scripts there.  More likely he'd have worked alone in a hotel suit for that as that would have been several weeks of work.

Also, I've been told that ESCAPE, CONQUEST and his work on BATTLE was all done in England.

        .html
        .html

With a knife in the heart of Apes fans that Matt Reeves has spurned them to do a more popular franchise, the director talked about the two.

On "Apes": "I have a great love for these characters, and I really do think this franchise is so unique. You have photo-real apes who are your main characters, and the spectacle is an excuse to tell great drama that you couldn't do otherwise. A lot of other franchises are nothing without explosions and action. This is a war movie, of course we have that kind of spectacle, but really in the forefront it's about these relationships. I've been a huge "Planet of the Apes" fan since I was a child, so to be in this world is something I never would have expected to be doing, and I really see it as an incredible opportunity".

If he loves "Apes" so much, why is he leaving? Turns out, he's living the dream: both happen to be his favorite franchises. "It's a strange thing to be involved in the two franchises which were the two that I was connected to most as a child. I just was obsessed with Batman when I was a kid. What I find so interesting about him as a character is that, as far as superheroes go, he's not superhuman, he is a person. And he is a tortured soul who is grappling with his past and trying to find a way to be in a world that has a lot that's wrong with it and trying to find a way to reconcile all of that".

Reeves is too busy with POTA right now to know yet how he will approach the Caped Crusader, but Batman has a long history sharing creatives with POTA. The original POTA movies had lots of folks who worked on the Adam West TV show (both were done by Fox) and of course there's Tim Burton, Gary Oldman and now Matt Reeves. As far as I know there's never been an Apes/Batman crossover in comics but I'm sure that's coming.

The days are getting hotter and so is POTA. The calendar tells us the new movie "War 4" will be here in 2 months.

And the final trailer is said to be coming this week, in time 4 Fox's new "Alien" movie. 5/21 will also mark the 50th anniversary of the start of filming the original POTA. A lot of 50ths this summer.

Looking good but more of the same. No Heston stuff. Hopefully the Heston one will be on the blu-ray.

Digging Woody's "Natural Born Killers" vibe.

We'll be getting the final trailer Tuesday but this 1 minute "teaser" is blow away. A surprise visit from a classic POTA actor and a promise that this movie will have a finality. Just wow.

Fifty years ago today (5/22/67) the original POTA started filming. Let me repeat that. No, I won't. Although Heston's diary sez 5/21, John O'Callaghan's meticulous book "Simians and Serialism" has us covered. Turns out 5/21 was a Sunday (as it was 50 years later) and according to union rules they couldn't film on a Sunday. So that's that. Also, the final budget sez 5/22.

So what did they film? From 5/22 to 6/5 it wuz the astronauts trekking across the desert. As has been noted before the studio thought that wuz ridiculous but in "Behind the POTA" Mort Abrahams recalls asking director Frank Schaffner why he was so particular about that sequence. According to Abrahams, Schaffner told him, "It sets the mood, the tone and the objective of the film. We're going, we don't know where we're going. We have no idea of what's going to happen. And that sets the body of the film".

The desert stuff was a notoriously awkward start to the filming, a lot of effort for a sequence people thought was unnecessary (certainly it's hard to imagine it being filmed for a movie today). According to Heston, one of the astronauts fainted from the heat on the first day (Jeff Burton, "Dodge") which often reached 120 degrees. Heston mentions the first day of filming got off to a late start because of problems with the fake beards. And Roddy notes in "Behind", "The location was desolate and treacherous (Glen Canyon in Utah and Lake Powell). Camera and sound equipment arrived by helicopter, foot and mule pack team".

In the end I feel the "desert trek" was a signature sequence in the film that adds to the mystery and awe of the film. It wouldn't have been the same without it and I'm glad Schaffner took the time to get it right.

            Hey, fellow Apes fans.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the filming of PLANET OF THE APES, "Simians & Serialism" author John O'Callaghan and I went on an expedition into the "Forbidden Zone" of Southern Utah to visit as many of the exact locations of filming -- and many on the same date they were shot 50 years ago -- that we could find or at least get to without killing ourselves.

One of these was the location where the "Scarecrows?" scene was shot.  This is a location so hard to get to that we couldn't just hike there and had to hire a guide and an ATV to take us to the spot.  Here is me at the location just after we first got out of the vehicle.

            RoryatScarecrowSite.jpg

What we found at this location will amaze (and I mean WILL AMAZE!), but I'm not at liberty to disclose more details right now or even give the exact location.  John plans something that will be available to all APES fans in the future, but it will be a while before it's ready, most likely in time for the 50th anniversary of PLANET's 1968 release we hope.  At this point we're not even sure what it's final form will be, maybe an e-book, maybe a Blu-ray (we shot video), or maybe both.

We also went to Malibu Creek State Park to look at how the once Fox Ranch is today (and were still "dug up" pieces of Ape Town) and Point Dume, and oh, by the way, I think we've finally found the location of something from BENEATH at the Fox Ranch that has remained elusive for a long time, but John is actually going to have to make a return visit for photographic proof as we didn't have the strength to actually hike there a few days ago.

Meanwhile, I'll end this post with another photo of me at a location I'm sure you'll all recognize.  That spot was a hike, too, as you can tell from my face, and yes, there's a fence there now that I'm trying to hide.

John O'Callaghan deserves all the credit for finding most of the locations.  He literally spent months studying satellite images on Goggle Earth. I've known of where the Scarecrow location was for over a year now, but I'm sworn to secrecy.  Still, we weren't prepared for what we'd find there. For me, it was the trip of a lifetime, so I couldn't pass it up.  Since I'm just a couple years from sixty, I figured I better do it now while I still can. Because I had to fly out there, it wasn't cheap, but it was worth it.

No evidence it's a gag ape.

You can see the "Bad Ape" wearing that blue jacket in the last trailer when he and a lot of other apes are being fired at.  It's winter remember and it looks like Bad Ape has lost most of his fur, so he needs the jacket.  I believe at first the other apes mistake him for a human.

Meanwhile, I've read over at Blu-ray.com that the running time for WAR is 130 minutes.  Does that make it the longest APES movie?

It's "Bad Ape" (the chatty ape in the trailers played by Steve Zahn) but he's wearing clothes. Is this the clothing style of apes to come? Looks like the classic look with a modern twist. No evidence it's a gag ape.

Based on what I've heard, Bad Ape is kind of the next level ape. He doesn't know sign language, wears clothes (but not at first). The filmmakers love him. They say he shows there are other ape societies beyond Caesar's crew.

Have to say I didn't see the jacket before. Tim sez it's also on the final poster. But it's cool the apes get some clothes and also it's reminiscent of the orang's clothes in the original. I have a feeling the end will provide a big surprise.

Speaking of APES books, can anyone confirm if these books (plugged in the "POTA-Tales from the Forbidden Zone" anthology book) have been released yet:

"Planet of the Apes-Omnibus 1" and "Planet of the Apes-Omnibus 2"

(Omnibus 1 is said to have Feb. 2017 release date, and Omnibus 2 said it's to be available in April 2017: I ask if theses books are indeed on the market now, because there's been times that things are scheduled to come out and they A) Never do or B) Do come out but are released well after the scheduled release date.)

The original POTA finished shooting it's epic Arizona and Utah footage 50 years ago today, 6/5/67. Originally scheduled for 10 days, the desert shoot for POTA lasted 13, shooting every day but Sundays (per John O'Callaghan's "Simians and Serialism"). The pressure was on the whole way, with the studio fretting it was a waste of time and money (and went over schedule to boot). Studio head Richard Zanuck threatened to pull the plug. But producer Mort Abrahams ran interference and got the director the time he needed to shoot what turned out to be very important shots that gave the movie weight.

They filmed not only the astronauts' trek but also the first ape shots, showing Roddy McDowall (Cornelius), Kim Hunter (Zira) and Lou Wagner (Lucius) in the deep desert. Charlton Heston commented in his 5/31/67 diary entry: "… finishing off the apes on location, which is a blessing. The makeups are only just bearable for them and the more days off they can get the better they'll be. I'm impressed at how well Roddy McDowell and Kim Hunter act in the makeup; you can actually read emotion through those animal faces".

The desert shoot went from May 22 – June 5 1967. It was off to California for the rest of the film.

Well, here I am just a couple weeks ago -- wish I was still there hiking around!  -- standing next to that very same balancing rock 50 years after if was immortalized in the movie.  It still stands strong -- and is huge!  Other rocks seen in the movie haven't fared so well.  I think global weather change has increased rainfall in the area and so there has been some erosion.  It's more than a little haunting to visit the area now, especially since not many movies shoot there anymore.

The Jane Goodall Institute and "War For the POTA" have teamed up to help apes. They're using the film as a way to teach folks about the situation simians are in. They've released a video (which includes footage from the movie I haven't seen) and have named a sanctuary at the Institute's Congo rehabilitation center "Caesar's Home".

Thanks, Rory and John.  The scarecrow location is one of my Holy Grails.  I'm glad to see it can actually be found.  I've taken a few comparison photos on trips to Lake Powell in the past.  Here are a couple.

The first is obviously photos from 1967, and the second would be mine.  There was no fence at the Horseshoe Bend site when I last visited in 2009.

I got this book a couple days ago.  It's hardcover and very nicely put together.  If you've never collected the APES Topps bubble gum cards or don't have all of them, everything is nicely reproduced in the book, there's even three cards included with poster images from the reboots.

Strangely, the book says that the original card series of PLANET came out in 1969.  Well, I was there and it came out in 1968 not long after the movie opened wide in April of that year.  By the time I went to PLANET for the second time, in late June 1968, I had a complete set of cards in the pocket of my cargo shorts.

The original POTA production returned from the desert and started shooting like normal people 50 years ago today. Well, kind of normal. The mornings were devoted to doing the ape makeup and shooting would go from 10 AM – 7 PM, a little late for Charlton Heston's taste. His diary entry for 6/7/67: "The usual problems attendant on moving back on stage from a location. The prop truck isn't back yet, the crew has to shake down. In addition, the makeups are so rough for the apes, their calls are so bloody early, that we've decided to start at ten in the morning and finish at seven in the evening. Personally, I'm not delighted with this plan, but it makes sense overall. I was unconscious through most of the scene today and thus had little to contribute, but Frank shot it well".

Could the scene be the blood transfusion?

I would say, yeah, it's that scene, so possibly that was the first scene shot once production started on the Fox lot sound stages.  That scene later got commented upon in the rushes as documented in John Gregory Dunne's 1968 book "The Studio."

"That afternoon, Richard Zanuck watched the previous day's rushes of Planet of the Apes.  The scene showed an ape doctor giving a blood transfusion.  The recipient was Charlton Heston, the donar Linda Harrison, who played Nova, the mute Earth Girl.  In angle after angle, the ape fastened the tube between the arms of the two Earth people.
'You don't give a transfusion that way,' Owen McLean said in the darkness of the projection room.  'You take the blood out of one arm first, then pump it into the other arm.  You can't make blood flow from arm to arm like that.'
'He's right, Dick,' Stan Hough said.
Zanuck was unperturbed.  'What the hell,' he said.  'Maybe that's how an ape does it.'"

My guess would be that the next scenes shot would be in the cages where Maurice Evans makes his first appreance.

Nice pickup from that book. I've never heard of it or the author and tried looking it up.

Wikipedia does not have an entry for the book itself but the author's Wiki page states that The Studio is his non-fiction account of 20th Century Fox.

So how much of the book touches PotA? Is there a lot more? Worth reading for Potafionados like us here? (I'm claiming that label!)

PotA aside, as a movie lover in general I'd like to know more about that book.

Getting back to the initial thread, I think it was pretty evident which scene Heston was referring to but the quote from the book seals it.

No, not that Nova. Nova from the new "War For the POTA" movie. Fox has created a video salute to her which includes some new footage.

Also, the film will be screened for free June 19 in various locations. See below for your chance (but it's probably already full like mine is).

There's not a lot about the making of PLANET OF THE APES in "The Studio" but there's enough about it and Arthur Jacobs and what was going on at Fox in that year, 1967, from someone observing from the inside that I think the book is a "must-have" for POTA fans.  It's amazing that it's been around since late 1968, though I didn't discover it until the mid-seventies, but I remember being very thrilled to read it at the time. Of course, I wouldn't have been that interested back when I was nine years old.

The author, by the way, was the uncle of actor Griffin Dunne from "An American Werewolf in London."

I liked that the book has the full lyrics for the Doors song "Twentieth Century Fox" (pg. 71), which came out that year on their first album. I imagined that song over the Fox logo for Oliver Stone's POTA way back when (Stone did the Doors movie).

I now see that Dunne was given exclusive access for that one year, 1967 for this book and of course PotA had to figure prominently which pique's my interest slightly higher.

I'm not willing to shell out too much for such a book (especially considering my vast "read pile" ) but it is something to look out for at sales, thrift shops and such.

For those interested the book is available at Big Book stores (even Chapters/Indigo here in Canada) as well as Ebay. Reprinted as late as 1998 and even electronic ebook formats available for those that prefer that format.

My guess would be the cave/subway entrance, and I'm actually curious if there's an actual small cave to be entered or if it's more just an alcove where the sunlight doesn't get into and gives the appearance of a cave.
Cool photos BTW. Thanks for posting them.

The latter, located on the ranch north of what was the M*A*S*H set.  Watching episodes of "Daniel Boone" actually helped figure it out.  They shot all over the ranch.

50 years ago on 6/13/67, Charlton Heston let his freak flag fly. Heston noted in his diary: "Today was a horrible day. I'd caught a cold, something I almost never do while working. I felt lousy when I came to work, and worse every time that damn fire hose hit me, topped off when I had to scream the last speech of the sequence, dripping and hose-battered. The hoarse rasp I was able to produce is really ideal; this is the first scene where we hear Taylor speak after his throat wound. Frank's staging is very telling. The cage stuff looks good in dailies, the ragged blanket's appropriately ratty and unheroic".

The "cage stuff" was almost done, the first things shot in the studio.

Fox has released their second "intro" clip and poster of new "War" characters. The first was for the new Nova and now this one makes the acquaintance of Bad Ape, who seems like the shape of ape to come (wears clothes, talks fluently). New footage but I guess nothing spoilery to those who have seen the trailers.

Heston sez Maurice Evans made his debut as Dr. Zaius 50 years ago today as they finished up the cage stuff on 6/14/67. They completed filming Taylor's escape from the cage and then did Zira introducing Dr. Zaius to Taylor ("Yes, amusing, a man acting like an ape!"). Heston noted, "His orangutan makeup is excellent, and he is learning how to use it".

Critics have seen "War 4 the POTA" and though reviews are embargoed until 6/26, their comments suggest it's another winner. Duh, winning! Is it a dud? Hey, aren't you listening?

Fox is definitely not hiding it. The first audiences get to see it Monday (are you going?) so what does that mean for any surprise ending? People will be chattering on twitter like a bunch of monkeys for a month before it's released. Either there's no big surprises to spoil or they've held back a final scene. Probably word of mouth comes first because it's up against the second weekend of Spider-Man. But relax and know that "War" is another good one.

For PLANET & BENEATH you mean, or for BATTLE and the TV series as well since they largely take place outside? I'm curious now if the BENEATH cave entrance was ever featured in a show like Daniel Boone or any of the old western series? I have to imagine that somewhere along the way, the entrance to a cave would be featured in a story and something which formed naturally would look much better than a studio set.
A while back, I came across a You Tube video someone had posted that followed the path of the wagon Brent and Nova escape from, and the person made a point of showing the tree where the gorilla solider was knocked off the top and how the branch had been subsequently cut off. It's not posted now, of course, and I also seem to remember someone else disputing it being the same tree. Can't remember if that was here or in the You Tube comments right now.

Well, I don't have $40,000 plus, but at least that auction told us the helmet is made of fiberglass and leather.  I've often wondered about that.

And here's a photo of a piece of that set they were shooting on fifty years that I recently dug up in Malibu creek State Park.  The area in the background is where that Ape Town Amphitheater stood all those decades ago.

Oh, and by the way, this scene was being shot on June 23, 1967:

                    No.

And I doubt that this generation of fans for the new series of films will be as rabid about that fandom down the road. PotA was a huge influence to many of us but today's fans are deluged with so much 'shiny candy' that no one items shines above the others. I almost feel sorry for today's youth that they will probably never have that passion for anything.

Peter Chernin could be seen as the godfather of Nu Apes. He dug the original films as "relevant and timely almost to any time in history" and as the head of Fox in the early '90's he got the ball rolling on a new "Apes" movie which eventually led almost a decade later to POTA2001. Meanwhile, Chernin went from running Fox to running the parent company News Corp. as Rupert Murdoch's #2. As part of his retirement package he got a sweet producing deal for his company Chernin Entertainment. Though he's had other hits, Nu Apes ("Rise", "Dawn", "War") are really his movie company's signature productions so far.

In a rare interview on Apes, Chernin talked about the uncertain life after Caesar. Whatever Caesar's fate in the movie, it's no secret that his story is concluding (with trailers and TV commercials calling it "the End"). He sez, "Well, what I would say is that it is – and I recognize this is a little bit hedging – meant to complete this Caesar arc. It was meant to complete a story… I think people will find this an incredibly satisfying finale".

But why should knowledge stand still? What about the future? Chernin insists they are having those discussions right now: "From the moment we started this, we looked at this as one story, as one trilogy, and so we have never thought about doing (a crazy "Escape"- like turn). We've been thinking about what subsequent Ape movies might look like, and we've been doing a lot of talking over the last 6 months about what other Ape movies we might do. There may be things that are more radical but this has always been driven by one narrative arc and, frankly, by a specific group of characters… I'd be shocked if we ever did something this tonally, wildly different as they did in some of those early movies".

With Matt Reeves taking off for "Batman" and box office results awaited, who knows about the future?

I don't think it's the same helmet used in BENEATH (and later the TV series if I'm remembering correctly). It's too flat from the midsection to the top. Look at the BENEATH screengrabs in the listing and then look at the helmet on the bust. The helmet in the film almost has a rounded look when you look at it straight on, but the one in the auction is almost flush to the head of the bust. Chris L.

Yeah, I just read this one from Variety, which back in 1968 gave the original movie one of its best reviews.  This one for WAR is not all that positive and has me now lowering my expectations.

                    1. The reviewer who praised POTA almost 50 years ago is no longer there;
                    2. I see your review and raise you this one:

                    collider.com/war-for-the-planet-of-the-apes-review/

One thing so far is that it's a bleak, violent movie. That might hurt it at the box office. But I love they went there.

I think this movie will be comparable to "Dawn", though it sounds like a better movie. Whatever your opinion of "Dawn", which also showcased Matt Reeve's interests, will hold true for "War".

                    1. The reviewer who praised POTA almost 50 years ago is no longer there;
                    2. I see your review and raise you this one:

One thing so far is that it's a bleak, violent movie. That might hurt it at the box office. But I love they went there.
I think this movie will be comparable to "Dawn", though it sounds like a better movie. Whatever your opinion of "Dawn", which also showcased Matt Reeve's interests, will hold true for "War".

Yeah, I just read this one from Variety, which back in 1968 gave the original movie one of its best reviews.  This one for WAR is not all that positive and has me now lowering my expectations.

We'll just have to see the movie for ourselves and decide.  In the meantime, Veetus, watch this and turn your expectations into expectorations!

                    1. The reviewer who praised POTA almost 50 years ago is no longer there;

Not only did "War 4" have the longest production time of any "Apes" movie, a full 3 years, but it's also the longest "Apes" movie. "War" is 2 hours and 20 minutes, beating "Dawn" by 10 minutes. In the old days the Ape movies used to get shorter and the apes looked worse. Almost 50 years later it's the reverse.

But we all know that length doesn't matter, it's what you do with it. ; )

More likely two hours and fifteen minutesif you don't count the ten minute end credit roll.

One thing it won't be is the "Bestest" Apes movie.  That will forever be the '68 original.

Here's the trailer for Andy Serkis' first movie as a director. I don't know about you, but as a POTA fan I will be forever grateful to Andy for taking POTA seriously and leading the way portraying an ape with modern CG. Though Andy is fully committed to motion capture with his own Imaginarium studio, and his motion capture movie "The Jungle Book" is due next year, his first movie "Breathe" is a straight forward, non-FX movie (as far as I know) about a guy dealing with polio. It's based on the parents of one of Andy's Imaginarium partners and is a personal story to him. Maybe this will bring him the Oscar people want for him.

And who knows, Andy may direct a POTA movie some day. That would seem to be almost a certainty.

I don't want to say too much but I loved it! It's very well done. It reminds me of movies like "Papillion" or "True Grit". Serkis and Steve Zahn are fantastic...
