the cover had a heavier stock, almost like cardboard. It was only available
through the company, you couldn't buy it in stores. I think they also did a
"special edition" of the first issue of their POTA series. I'd have to
check. - - - Jeff

Well, I think what they are talking about is selectable from the "scarecrow

They did. I have just uploaded pictures of the front and back covers
of this collectors edition. You can find them in the photos section
in the Misc. folder.

The best (IMO) image viewer for PCs is IrfanView:
http://www.irfanview.com/
It's free, displays most anything, and nicely resizes images. It's
more viewer than editor, but if all you need to do is resize and
simple edits (cropping, etc), it can't be beat.

I agree with you 100% here Hunter. Irfanview is great, I couldn't
survive without it! I use it all the time and like you said... It's
free and I would recommend it to anyone!

+++ Ron,
I talked to you on private e-mail about this a while ago.
No, you are NOT mad. Thankfully, you seem to be a little more
sensitive and aware than most of the psychos around you.
Legal stuff -- bah! Takes forever. Hopefully you'll sort it out
and what should prevail WILL prevail -- if you know what I mean.
Forget OT -- let us know how you are.

The very first comic book I ever bought was Marvel's Adventures on the

was prior to seeing the film on TV, although I had been watching the
series and had seen Battle on TV. It took a few years for me to acquired
the rest of the color reprint comics as well as all of the magazines. I
remember having a marathon reading session when I got the last few mags
to fill in my collection. Man, what a great day that was.
I think that part of the strong feelings that some of us have for these
comics relates to how old we were when we read them and whether or not we
read them back when they were released and Apemania was in it's prime.
Perhaps if I were reading them now for the first time I may not enjoy
them as much as I did then (I'd probably have a similar reaction to the
one I had when I read the Adventure comics when those came out in the
90s). Still, I don't reject them as 'not Apes', they just fit into a
different corner of the entire Apes phenomenon for me. <<

Actually, whoever posted the comment about the cloud covered night

that fit rather well into the story considering the fact that it was

(thousands of years maybe?) that people in the Northern hemisphere will
be able to see all the stuff that people in the Southern hemisphere see
now (the Southern Cross, etc). It almost read like the planet would
eventually rotate upside-down on it's axis (I hope I'm phrasing that
correctly). Does this sound familiar to anyone, and if so, wouldn't it be
feasible that this had happened to 40th Century Earth- either by natural

Gosh, Whitty.... I never saw Conquest as a big statement that the U.S. was
becoming more facist. But perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps all doom soaked
sci-fi future stories (that just happen to be SET in the United States) are
a comment on how bad us Americans MIGHT become!
Or MAYBE...
The story of a facist future state that MIGHT come about if WE all as humans
on this here little planet of OURS don't remain ever vigilant was simply SET
in the United States... because the U.S. was a major hub of Western
civilization in the 20th century when Conquest was made. But come to think
of it, the opening of Conquest states that it's "NORTH AMERICA!" which could
also incude or even.... GOD NO!!!... be Canada!
But, naaahhhhh!!!!!
Americans (and only Americans!) will one day eat eachother as Soylent Green.
Americans will one day be killed off at the age of 30 in a special
ceremony... and if we you don't want to die, they'll send special killers

But then... if all that ONLY happens in the U.S.... then Australia will

I've always thought that the reason Urko is wearing orange in the cartoon is
because of the gold/tan/butterscotch? uniform that the Mego Ursus/Urko
figure is wearing. Gold seems to translate to orange in the cartoon world.
I remember as a kid, having this HUGE argument with a kid from school about
whether or not Captain's kirk's shirt was gold (yellow) or orange. He swore
up and down it was orange and I kept telling him it was supposed to be gold.
It certainly looked orange in the filmation cartoon but I still think it was
supposed to be gold. I can accept an Urko in gold "armor" over an orange
Urko any day.

Excellent post, Chris! You make a lot of really important and inciteful
points. Nostalgia does have a big effect on people. However, one of the
things I have always loved about the Apes films is the fact that every time
I've revisted them at differing points in my life, I got something new from
them. They seemed to speak to me on a different level, probably because of
the differing ages I was at when I saw them.

Yes, it was Superman. I forget if the emblem was missing or upside-down, but I do recall that Mr. Abrams said that it affected sales until they got it corrected. What happened is that they
noticed sales were lower for Superman than the other heroes and when they started to ask kids why they weren't buying him the kids said the figure wasn't Superman because the costume was wrong.
Today, of course, you'd have collectors scrambling for these error figures and selling them on eBay as rare variants.

The first of the two episodes featuring the giant ape Kygor was episode 6, Terror on Ice Mountain. Bill and Cornelius travel in a hot-air balloon to the top of a mountain to hide a book
that Cornelius found. The book shows that humans (or "humanoids") once kept apes in cages. The plans for the baloon were wrapped around the book, but part of the plans were missing, so Cornelius and Zira
turned to their astronaut friends to supply the missing information and help build the baloon.
The second episode featuring Kygor was also the last in the series, episode 13, Battle of the Titans. Bill and Cornelius go back to the mountain to get the book because Urko has been temporarily relived of command and
this may be the only opportunity Cornelius and Zira have to present the truth of the planet's history. This is also the episode where Kygor fights the giant monster bird.

Chris, a giant ape did feature in a couple of episodes.
Without going back through my tapes to find the exact episodes I'll
take a guess at it but I'm pretty sure it's in the one where Bill
and Cornelius use a balloon to get up a mountain to hide a book, and
there is an episode where it fights the flying dragon bird thingy.
Come to think of it wasn't it named Kygoor or something like that?

the board. If the flap sides and exposed underboard parts are white, they
are repro. If they are the brown cardboard color, they are probabaly
authentic.
Here's a picture of my Apes boxes all togehter:
http://www.megostore.com/mc/images/usergallery/980112655078.jpg
You can see the edges of the flaps are white core board. You can see
undernieth the window that the insert still leaves some of the box inside
exposed and it's white. So, that's the number 1 thing to look for. No
cardboard color,no authentic.
Generally be suspicious though if you ever see a pristine box for a 30 year
old toy. The more mint it is, the more the seller must be detailed with
photos and info to demonstrate that it is authentic.

.html Dave, Neil and Mike, the conclusion is simply stunning, and well worth the wait.
Ever since page 21 (when Gideon found Bren'ts ship) we've known that Gideon (and the humans pursuing him) were living on borrowed time. The big question was how much time did they have left, and would the story
conclude before or with the detonation of the Alpha Omega bomb.
The art is fantastic. Even better, I think, than the previous chapters. Reading the whole thing together you can really appreciate how well the story is structured. Everything that's happened to Gideon has helped to
put him in the place where he has to make a choice between taking his own life before the humans overwhelm him, or to go down fighting.
My favorite part of the finale are the insert panels showing us the events elsewhere on the planet: Taylor's final confrontation with Zaius and Milo, Cornelius and Zira launching Taylor's ship. It's a very
effective storytelling device, and it's unique to the comic format. The last three captions on page 34 are simply priceless, and looking back on page 22 the final caption on that page takes on a new shade of meaning
as well.
So, um, when do we get the first chapter of the next comic?

Great memory without checking.
I am scanning the differences right now and they will soon be

POTA #1:
Standard Edition.
Colour fold over edition (the same except for a colour fold-over
page showing a black and white of the back cover shown on the

a pile of human bodies - I wonder if there is some "rating" thing

Limited Edition (Cover has a heavier stock, almost like cardboard.
It was only available through the company, you couldn't buy it in
stores. Different picture on the cover, metallic script for the
title, back cover as per the "fold-over" cover, NUMBERED, contains
Marvel Article "Monkey Business - an informal history of POTA by Jim

Ape Nation #1:
Standard Edition.
Limited Edition (Cover has a heavier stock, almost like cardboard.
It was only available through the company, you couldn't buy it in

Hope that's everything....scnas coming!

There will be a safety net against spammers whereby the very first

the "moderators". However that will be all - then everybody may
have their say.
Instead of imposing unclear rules on everyone, there will be a
sister group to discuss politics and "biff it out" if you MUST. If
you want to use expletive deletives, or discuss things like
mutant/ape husbandry, you can do so on Patrick's group
pota_phenomenon@yahoogroups.com.
We need input to get the balance right, so if you are not already a

Until I do get input, general rule is keep swearing to a minimum and
don't get descriptive about obscenities. There are sensitive people

consideration. If you break the rules you will be warned (if it is
a minor, understandable infringement), or removed (if it is a major

discussion of politics, either group politics or political

of POTA, otherwise....off to the Arena!
So if you are wondering what the difference between the groups is,
then:
pota@yahoogroups.com
Long history, but of late it has become a moderated group. Same

potaDG@yahoogroups.com
New group owners and moderators. Unmoderated (the moderators are
more a committee).
potaFCarena@yahoogroups.com
Where the political discussions and decisions are made for the

feel unfairly treated. Where those who care for NONE of this mayy
avoid and therefore avoid it all!
pota_phenomenon@yahoogroups.com
Unmoderated, no rules. ANARCHY, but if you can take a bit of
colourful language and the rest of it, a fine site too!
So there you go! If you are like me and love your POTA, you will
join all sites and contribute equally to them. All 4 sites have

You guys all did a great job on the comic and deserve the appreciation of
all fans.
I noticed in one panel that C&Z's ship is making orbit and it shows that a
stage has detached. This is in line with the theory that the ANSA ships were
multi-stage vehicles with a landing, re-launch and re-entry stage.
I was wondering if there was any discussion of this before the panel was
drawn.

Americans will one day be killed off at the age of 30 in a special
ceremony... and if we you don't want to die, they'll send special killers
called Sandmen after us!
But then... if all that ONLY happens in the U.S.... then Australia will
become a vast wasteland dominated by motorized gangs who will murder to get
"the juice" and not even Mad Max will be able to stop them! ;)

I don't remember any discussion about it. The reason I drew the ship
this way is because to me it seemed to make sense.
I based it on Brent's ship, where you can clearly see the burn out
rocket section at the rear. Also there is no 'skid mark' like the
one along the ground behind the ship in the TV series. Brent's ship
has what looks like a 'blast' mark on the ground, as though it has
landed tail first and then toppled over.
So I thought it would work best having the spaceships as tail
landers that then blast off leaving the landing legs behind and then
having that rear booster section detatch in space to finally have a
re-entry type capsule for the final stage of the craft.
Hope this makes sense!

Hey Whitty! Yes, EXTREME sarcasm! I lived overseas for five and a half
years and got to know people from every English speaking country (The U.K.,
Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa), France, Germany and
many others and let's just say that I was often a bit taken aback by the
interesting ideas that many of those folks had about my country. They
seemed to know every dirty little detail about the U.S. (right down to how
they thought the Kennedy assassination actually went down!) but seemed to
know comparatively little about dirty dealings going on in other countries
(including their own!). America may not be perfect, but unlike the former
Soviet Union and communist China, we do not make any attempt to hide our
flaws and mistakes (unless you believe ALL the conspiracy theories!). In
fact, in the spirit of TRUE democracy (NOT facism!) we tend to advertise our
flubs (something you don't see in every country, believe me) and we came out
on top after the Cold War, perhaps, because of it. Or maybe it was because
of that British secret agent, 007?
In any case, to get back to the original post (or rather my objection to
it), I just don't think that the U.S. alone has ever been any more in danger
of becoming a facist state than any other Western nation. In fact, it
actually DID happen in Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain (all European
countries...) and during the sixties and seventies in particular, people
were really leary of the whole facist take over thing and I'm sure American
involvement in Vietnam (where the French were in the first place...) made
all that seem more plausible at the time and I will not deny that the Apes
films may bear Paul Dehn's musings about all that. But then nobody ever
made a sci-fi movie set in Northern Ireland that took sides on that
particular bloody little issue, did they?
But I really think you are a better than average guy when it comes to
disputes on the DG or elsewhere. I have seen you take a lot of hits and I
thought you were pretty amiable about it on most counts. You've had people
totally disagree with you and really come down on you but you didn't fly
into a huff and quit altogether. Most of your responses are pretty friendly
no matter what's been thrown at you and I really admire that. Anyway, I'm
sure you're proud to be Australian and an Apes fan. Well, I'm proud to be
an American and I'm an Apes fan too. I just think there should be room on
the various discussion groups for people of all nations. :)
Lastly, I just want to clarify that I don't see Conquest as a warning that
the U.S. ALONE is in danger of becoming facist. The whole "tightly
controled society" (as Frank Capra Jr. put it) in the film was a plot device
to aid in the eventual downfall of ALL of human civilization, not just the
U.S. "This will be the end of civilization and the WORLD will belong to a
planet of apes!" Not just the U.S. If the story had taken place in
Boulle's France, I really don't see how it would have been much different.
In all honesty, do you?

Will, my friend, I get what you are saying.
I think you are actually taking my comment out of context, but if that's
what it takes to get you wound up and posting like this then so be it!
Just to set the record straight, the reason I said the USA looks like
heading towards being a fascist state is ONLY because POTA does not show any
other county...for all we know they might all have been NUKED!
Will, the reason we all seem to know all about the USA is that it controls
the media. That's changing, but not much! I think you (we?) won the Cold
War because freedom (?) beats oppression. Socialist ideals are SO close to
Christianity it isn't funny, but in practice people lose their freedom FAR
more than they do in a democracy.
I entirely agree that the U.S. alone has ever been any more in danger of
becoming a facist state than any other Western nation. However the only
nation I see in any POTA movie is the USA, so that's all I can comment on.
Will, I appreciate your support re taking hits, but I have a history of
throwing a few back too! But I'm here for the long haul and while fights
happen, I am not motivated by them. I am not here to be a political leader,
bu8t it seems I have come to be in charge of "the" happening place for POTA
at the moment. This is something that explains to me why I am a "trouble
magnet". If I say something, I am speaking from the heart usually, not even
from the mind buut just expressing how I feel. Often when I re-think this I
re-evaluate. That might look like "flip-flopping", but to me it is honesty
in its' purest form. I am proud to be an Aussie, but I love your country
too and I love the cheeky buggers the Motherland provides us with as well!
Would you believe the group owners here are Australian (me), American
(Helen) and English (Neil)? I think that's multicultural enough for the
moment!
Lastly, I just want to AGREE that I don't see Conquest as a warning that the
U.S. ALONE is in danger of becoming facist. But I do think it assumes that
because it depicts a US city as such, we should take for granted the world
is the same way.
Great post, keep 'em coming!
Let's back of the whole politics a bit though (?) - we might end up
upsetting people!

nation I see in any POTA movie is the USA, so that's all I can comment on.
Michael
Michael:
Thanks. I totally agree about backing off the politics. I just didn't want
that little point to pass without putting my two cents in.
I understand why you think the U.S. controls the media, but I'm not sure I'd
agree. I did notice, for example, that in the new Time Machine movie, that
the nationality of the inventor of the time machine had been changed from an
Englishman to a New Yorker and that the story takes place in New York and
not in England. An Englishman directed the film, an Australian starred in
it and most of the other actors were European. I don't think that that film
was part of an American scheme to control the world but I guess it could
have been.... The entertainment industry is a big phenomenon that just
happens to be primarily located in the U.S., but I could go on for ages
about how much European, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand actors and
film makers contribute to Hollywood and English language cinema. Hollywood
is pretty multicultural, my friend and I didn't even mention the German and
Chinese directors who regulary helm Hollywood films.
At any rate, you have been gratious once again and I thank you for that. I
was posting quite a bit before but that seems to have caused quite a civil
war on the DG. "Cold Mountain" on the Planet of the Apes! Oops! There's
another film that was set in the U.S. but was directed by an Englishman and
starred British and Australian actors in the leads....

Windows Media Player will play MP3s, as will Quicktime and Winamp
(www.winamp.com). There are probably dozens of MP3 players out there.

.htmlHi RobRon!
There are actually 2 DIFFERENT projects going on and I think people are
getting confused so let me clarify!
(1) The pota group are planning to do a comic. When I first heard this plan
it was the Extreme group that was going to do a few panels at a time of a
story using all different artists. Now - well, I don't know what they are
doing, but whatever it is I wish them luck. However, what they are doing is
NOTHING to do with me or any of the plans I have with Fox and a Publisher to
release POTA comics (hopefully monthly). I don't know if they are doing it
for fun or to have it published, but as I said I was not invited to be part
of it and I really do not have time for it anyway.
(2) The Official International Planet of the Apes Fan Club has been
negotiating with Fox and a publisher to bring Beware the Beast and other
POTA comics to the public. This started off as my idea to make a short comic
when I asked (about 18 months ago) for a writer to provide a story and a
person to come forth to draw. Well, what a fluke! I got Dave Ballard, a guy
with a swag of incredible POTA tales, and Neil Foster, who happens to be (in
my opinion) THE best POTA artist. Neil sent me a portfolio and I almost
FAINTED! They looked like APES from POTA!!! The costumes...EVERYTHING! Dave
sent me some stories and luckily I didn't have to decide....THEY WERE ALL
GREAT! I didn't have to decide because my approach was (gasp!) formulaic. I
had done the research and I knew what the fans wanted: a story set within
the original MOVIES (first, then one set in the TV Show environment), and
one that is not too lengthy so we can show the world we are not kidding - we
mean business! I never thought it would take this long!!!!
Once we decided on the story (I believe it was entitled "The Final Stand"),
Dave set about SCRIPTING. The script explains to the artist what the
storyteller wants to achieve. Then we all read this and, as Dave previously
explained, Neil and I made some suggestions to expand the ending.....really
to show non-POTA fans what is going on and to see another ape! Still no
chimps guys (but we are fixing that with the "Special Edition" version that
has 6 extra pages!). Oh, and Dave had his revenge by suggesting the immortal
Mr Foster make Gideon more "Animated"! ;)
Now, this was all done by the "Terrible Trio", Ballard, Foster and Whitty.
The next project (we have a working title we do NOT wish to share as it is
possibly too revealing) is scripted, artwork realism has been researched and
drawing is underway. It is a 22-page comic set in the TV Show environment,
brought to you by the same team. We are not yet certain if we CAN share the
pages with you as they progress, you may be buying it from the stores
(negotiations are at the point where if we do not get a publisher I will get
a license from Fox and foot the expenses to publish BTB and further comics
myself). The alternative is that a professional outfit will do all the work
for me.....that WOULD be nice!
Dave has provided the story, but he will no longer be able to enter the
script and we are readying for Neil or I to take over. This new comic should
be over and done in about a month - Neil will be going FULL TIME on this one
instead of doing it when he can fit it in. This is the trial to see if we
can knock out a 22 page comic monthly!
There is another Ballard story scripted, entitled "Juba, Road to Hell". Juba
is a Bounty Hunter, an original Character (like Gideon) set in the TV Show
environment. You will see this one day too, but we may head in another
direction first so I wont say WHEN!
Through all of this, Chris Lawless has joined the team and Rich Handley is
now on board as well. Between them, these guys have the most incredible
ideas for another movie environment story (set between Planet and Beneath)
and
..well, well keep a FEW surprises eh?
So yes, were organised, were serious, were ready.....if we had any
brains, we'd be DANGEROUS!!!!

.html Listen, the last chapter gave me a chill, with all the humans
converging on Gideon. This is amazing - a fan-produced comic with
all the flavor of the original movies. I don't think any of the pro
comics with their assorted craziness could ever have the imagination
and passion that this one does. I hope you guys are proud, because
this is a work of art complete with the obvious love of the original
POTA. A true fan's dream. I'm dying to have this one in print and
will print it out myself if it doesn't become available for
purchase. By the way, can we buy a color print somewhere? Neil was
coloring that panel from the group's home page, right?
God, Neil - Gideon's face! The surge of nameless, faceless humans.
He kept slaughtering them, but they kept coming. Damn you to hell,
Gideon!
Pure and simple, I'm in love with this, guys.

.htmlDepends if you mean Boulle's POTA or the movies...or the TV Show,
cartoon etc.
Boulle dealt with the "uneducation" of humans.
I thought the first movie dealt more with apes taking over via
(nuclear enhanced?) evolution and war and then destroying all
evidence of mankind having being intelligent and technological,
while thse "in the know" (Zaius, particularly) assured such
technology never imposed itself on the apes. And this was a
budgetary thing, since they originally wanted to go with Boulle's
advanced city but could not afford to!
But tell me more about the scopes monkey trial.....
