Thanks to Greg P., the final shooting script for the original "Planet
of the Apes" movie is now available as a PDF download.

And thanks to Chris Lawless, the "Misc" section of my page now
includes two advertisements for "Beneath the Planet of the Apes".
One is a pre-release ad, and the other is an ad for a screening for
Academy members for Academy Award consideration.

You can find them on:

Group: potadg Message: 19941 From: Menluth Date: 8/7/2004
Subject: Semos and Star Trek's "The Teacher"
.html
Did anyone else in the group read the latest POTA novel by William
Quick, "Planet of the Apes: Colony"? Very few seem to have read any
of the tie-in books and comics associated with Burton's PA01.

I really enjoy the books, though. Today, while getting my necessary
fix of Star Trek: TOS (I am just almost as much a Trekkie as I am an
Apes fan), I was immediately reminded of Quick's book "Colony". In
the Trek episode "Spock's Brain", you will recall that an all-
female, subterranean society steals Mr. Spock's brain to run their
vast computer system. Humans in this world have become rather dim-
witted, but receive superior knowledge to perform advanced tasks by
placing a helmet-like device on their head, called "the Teacher".
The Teacher implants advanced knowledge into the brain through
electrodes in the helmet.

In Colony, we learn that Semos, and later his son, receive technical
and historical knowlege that essentially evolved them to become the
super-apes of their time, and to the be the leaders over their
people. This was done by means of a teaching device on board the
wreck of the Oberon. This stuff is so close to Trek that I can't see
that author Quick didn't have this in his mind when he wrote the
novel. Does anyone know much about William Quick? Is he a Trek fan
himself who might have been influenced when he wrote his Apes
novels? Just speculation.

Hi Tim,
Yes, DG is still here. But there have been some changes. James'
website, that he had tagged onto the front of the DG page, has now
moved with him to the Yahoo group called "pota"
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota. Michael is currently
setting up shop with the Official International POTA Fan Club in
another group Yahoo group called "potafc"
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/potaFC. The membership of this
group (currently 195) is still intact, but we will miss that zesty
front page that has moved to the "POTA" group. Both James and
Michael are encouraging folks to check out those two groups, and I
would do so as well.

For almost two years, the POTA DG has been THE place for serious
fans of POTA to congregate, and we have seen fandom come to life
here in ways that it had not for years. I have certainly enjoyed the
discussions here a lot. Exactly how many Planet of the Apes
discussion forums we really need is a good question. But for the
moment, we have several active ones to choose from, and some of our
hardest-working and most creative fans have decided to spread their
wings a bit.

.html
The following PotaDG poll is now closed. Here are the
final results:

POLL QUESTION: What kind of POTA comic strip stories would
you like to see produced?

CHOICES AND RESULTS
- fill in the blanks Stories that deal with the gaps in existing continuity. That deal with established characters and situations but try not to upset anything already laid down. (For example Marvels bridge between Conquest and Battle), 11 votes, 39.29%
- meanwhile not so far away Stories that deal with NEW characters but work within a well established framework (For example Beware the beast), 12 votes, 42.86%
- Cross-overs Stories that combine characters and situations from another franchise with that of POTA (For example Ape-Nation), 1 votes, 3.57%
- Flights of fancy Stories that ignore existing rules and continuity and just go for it. (For example most of the adventure comics), 1 votes, 3.57%
- What if - Alternate universe stories that use existing characters and situations but asks what if? (For example What if Jonesy had lived? What if the Alpha Omega bomb had been a dud?), 3 votes, 10.71%

Just to clarify, these pictures have been deleted periodically on a
regular basis. James posted this back on May 5 in response to a query
from Neil about missing pictures:

http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/message/17396

Older pics are deleted to make room for the new ones.

Given the limited storage space, this has always been the policy as
far as I can remember.

But the thing is I SHOULD have been informed BEFORE they were
deleted, just common courtesy.
This was done before I knew anything about it, the first I knew
about it was when I was looking for some and they were gone!

I would have at least expected that they would have been moved to
the extra photo site that was set up for storing stuff away from
this site. They weren't though. They were deleted completley and I
didn't keep copies of all of them.

Nope, there were too many and I would have to go through all my old
discs to find out which ones I kept and then would probably still
not know how many I still don't have.
I didn't have a list of them. If I'd been told they were going to be
deleted maybe I could have made one.

I don't think we need to go on about this, but put plainly it was not
good form. People upload files to the DG, they expect them to stay
there and if they need to be deleted, it is a given to warn people.

And who decided what was to be deleted? Certainly not me!

indeed, few people have NOT been influenced by the

but if this is the case with quick's novel, one
wonders why he was so strongly influenced by one of
the silly-est episodes of the third season?

the pota2001 novelization is the only pota2001 fiction
that i have read. i did not think it was very well
written, so i am hesistant to read 'colony."

i was in a comic shop on saturday and saw some of the

Hi Rob,
The Adventure comic stories are hit and miss. Some of them are
outright ridiculous and I felt like they were a waste of time to
read. Often, I was very disappointed with the artwork, which was
kind of 'scratchy' in parts. And apart from the covers, the apes
neither looked like POTA apes or real ones. It did have some good
moments, and I absolutely love the Adventure Comics
miniseries "Urchak's Folly".

In the Dark Horse comics, the story follows an ape-human resistance
movement to the status quo. I was just pleased to have any kind of
Apes comic back on the shelves. Unfortunately, it only lasted a few
issues. The artwork is glossy, but I thought that the uniformed apes
looked more like Romulans than the 2001 movie.

Good Morning all! Well, probably not morning for many of us, but
good day (g'day) to those.

Overnight there have been some major changes to the group.

James left the group a few days ago and since then he has been
secretly demobilising the Internal Internet Site and raiding the
photos and files. So please have a look on the Photos and Files
Sections to determine if he took anything of yours - I know
he "deleted" many of Neil's infamous home-page pictures, and I hope
you are not also a victim. If anything has gone, contact me
privately and I'll check with James to see if he still has these.
I'm sure he did not do this as an act of sabbotage, but he has
definitely been a little ambitious in taking too much!

As you all know from the private emails I have sent you in the past,
some of James' antics (like removing my moderator powers) were
getting rather old with me, and I have been considering the
establishment of a new group. I think the DG is dead now....it
served its purpose and I'm thankful to see POTA fans free to discuss
what they love, but this is no longer the DG in my opinion.

With all the wonderful projects the Official International Planet of
the Apes Fan Club is now offering, I am starting to populate a Fan
Club Group. It will be essentially the same gang and many of the
same ideals, but I will be tightening up on transparency and
accountability. The moderators here know how I feel about
saying "there is no swearing allowed" without the provision of a
definition of what swearing is, and I am going to try to make the
rules EXTREMELY clear to everyone......so it will be no surprise if
someone is found to violate the rules.

I will be looking at monthly themes as well. It will not restrict
people to talking about that theme only, but it will encourage
people to talk about the theme and offer opinions, illustrations
etc. I already have a bunch of Neil Foster originals here to kick
off the campaign, and I have many other exciting plans.

One last thing....I am really quite shattered by the incredible
amount of wheeling and dealing that has gone on behind my back - the
relocation of the Internal website and the recruitment campaign that
accompanied that. Under normal circumstances, I would be wishing
the best to them, but these are not normal circumstances. So I
would ask that people agreeing with me about the underhandedness of
it all give voice to protest...tell James what you think. I don't
expect any of it will get through - but at least he will know.

Special thanks to all who made this group happen. Now I hope you
will join me on the exodus to the Promised Land! I will be adding
everyone's profile to the new group slowly over the next few days -
until then, let's continue to chat and maybe now focus on what you
want of the new Fan Club group. Anyone who does not wish to be part
of the new group, please contact me privately.

Michael

Whitty asked that I cut and paste this section of an e-mail I sent

I dutifully obey:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, just managed to catch the last 2 chapters of BTB...

It's still lovely Mike, and I know what you're doing. Chapter 11
did not push the story forward AT ALL, except to make it all a
little bit more heady for Gideon. You're obviously using that
dramatic tool --- "Make 'em wait and then give it to them in the
last chapter."

BTB is actually quite a beautiful thing, though. Congrats. To make
an apparent villain the underdog AND MAKE IT WORK is really clever.

Out of the entire story, the one thing that took my breath away was
that final splash page at the end of Chapter 7 -- Gideon looking at
Brent's ship. Absolutely exquisite -- and, to be serious for a
second, if Hollywood actually understood why people like you and I
love that PARTICULAR image so much, they might actually be able to
make us a decent new PLANET OF THE APES film.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

So, boys, was that a compliment..?

Greetings All.

Overnight a vote was taken and the POTADG ownership has been returned to me
exclusively. Many of you will be alarmed that it ever belonged to anyone
else, but it did (technically) and while Menluth and Helen did a wonderful
job as co-owners, the decision was made without consulting me and it has now
been voted on and corrected.

As I recently said to Helen "If there must be a dictator running the DG it
might as well be me" (but I am biased!).

We are in a very turbulent period now, and I want to believe these changes
will be for the best. I still have issues about the removal of the Internal
DG Website and I will soon discuss these with you shortly.

Currently we have voted to call for nominations (and/or volunteers) for new
moderators.

Would anybody like the job?

Group: potadg Message: 19962 From: Whitty, Michael Date: 8/9/2004
Subject: Files
.html
As you all know I was concerned about James' removal of Files from the DG
and the relocation of them at pota@yahoogroups.com.

I emailed David, the group owner there and he replied:

"James insists that the files he deleted from the DG were his, own, taken
from his own collection. I can't say 100% that he did or did not delete
anything else because I am not all knowing. I'm sure you can appreciate
that.

However, you or anyone else for that matter is free to use anything that
appears on my group or anything I have control over for any purpose. I have
never agreed with keeping internet files "exclusive". I honestly do not know
if said files are posted right now or not, but if they are not, when they
are you are more then welcome do take and do what you wish with them."

This is great news, and I would now like volunteers to help me to return all
of these files (and any other cool ones on the pota group!) to the DG....and
of course the pota group is free to mirror any of our files on their group
too.

I guess I really hope the two magazines can COMPLIMENT each other instead of

The announcement that Ape Chronicles is set to return unfortunately came

As of lately I have been overly obbessessed about Roddy McDowall and
want to see any movie he has played in. Well, this morning (okay...
five minutes ago) when I was looking at this one sight I found out
that tomorrow at 9:30 on TV Land they are playing the Carol Burnet
show that Roddy appears on. I'm excited! Yeah...!

Funnily enough I do, not that you would ever find me in a pub! ;-)

Only problem is that the pub Sky channels only show Sky Sports so I
don't like my chances of seeing a POTA documentary when I'm... I

The great "Twilight Zone' TV show is coming to DVD. Actually, it's been released before (every episode?) but in a scattershot manner. Now it's being released in season sets, in order the way it should be. The schedule right now is as such (courtesy www.tvshowsondvd.com ):
Season 1 - - - 12/28/04
Season 2 - - - 3/29/05
Season 3 - - - 6/28/05
Season 4 - - - 10/18/05
Season 5 - - - 12/27/05
What does this have to do with anything? Well, a certain dude named Rod Serling was the main force behind this show and he also slummed as the writer of the original POTA, as well as throwing in his two cents on "Beneath" and the TV show. There were also POTA stars like Roddy McDowell and Natalie Trundy in it. Serling also did "Night Gallery" and Season One of that comes out Aug. 24 (Roddy is in one of those eps too). Those who already have TZ on DVD and feel like they're in the twilight zone themselves, you're not alone. The original "Star Trek" also had a scattershot DVD release and now is being released season by season. I guess multiple releases is par for the course for sci-fi classics. POTA fans also know what it's like to rebuy DVDs.
"Picture a fan who buys a DVD and then the next time he goes into the store, he sees the same DVD in a new package. He knows he has that...but he doesn't. So he buys it. And then the next time it's new yet again. And again. Our fan will continue to buy the same DVD until the day he dies. He's just crossed over into the Business Zone".

Apes project?

Soytinly.

Those of us on the translation team have just received our copies of
issue 3, which looks great, and work is proceeding on preparing
issue 4 as we speak. I've already translated the scripts to the six
issues we have, and Kass is busily doing her part to prepare them so
Dave Ballard, et.al., can finish up the remaining issues.

Those on the translation team are all doing outstanding work, and I
know that members of the Fan Club will greatly enjoy the comics once
they're made available to the public. In the meantime, we've had
some cool successes regarding the stories beyond the six issues that
Mike has in hand.

Doing some research, I found the original creators of the Argentine
comics, writer Jorge Claudio Morhain and artist Sergio Alejandro
Mulko, both still living and working in Argentina. In the past few
months I've struck up friendships with both, and through Jorge I
discovered not only that there was a seventh issue to the series
that Mike was missing, but also that five more scripts were written
but never illustrated before the series was canceled!

At present, Jorge is in the process of providing us high-res scans
of issue 7 so we can offer the complete set to fans -- and, as a
great bonus, Jorge and Sergio have agreed to join forces once more
to finally publish the five "lost" tales exclusively for the Planet
of the Apes Fan Club.

This is truly a surreal experience for all of us involved in the
project, especially for Jorge and Sergio, who are ecstatic to know
not only that people are still reading their POTA work twenty years
later, but that English-language editions are finally available and
that after a LONG hiatus, they're actually able to present the
missing stories to complete the 12-issue set. This is not something
they'd ever expected, as the comics industry in Argentina folded
entirely several years ago and both men have had to move on to other
careers.

For those who want to know more, an article I've written for Simian
Scrolls will be in issue 10, I believe, interviewing Morhain, Mulko
and the entire translation team, discussing each of the 12 stories
in details, and providing a detailed look at the world of Argentine
comics, the renegade Argentine publisher who put together the POTA
series, and the writer/artist team who made it a reality.

I'd say that about sums it up for now. :)

Many global themes could be put into stories or comics. These can include
health problems, hunger, destruction of rainforests, political unrest,
segregation of certain groups into certain areas, oppressive dictators, poor
access to education etc. These themes could be incorporated into pota
fanfic. Elaine

99% of members here don't want to know about the politics and who did what.

To respect the wishes of that 99% I have promised not to discuss any more
politics on the group and I will keep that promise.

So if you wish to discuss what happened please join this group:

It is worth it (if for no other reason) to see the wonderful Neil Foster

Taylor facing off, in the cartoon style of the current "Batman" Animated

Be warned, the Arena is unmoderated and while I hope things DON'T get ugly
there, things may go that way!

Hi Glen,
You're quite right. The acting was poor, mostly due to the flat
script as well as some poor casting. No character development, and
no reason to care whether the lead roles lived or died. That's a
recipe for a bad movie. There's no doubt that PA01 was a squandered
opportunity to revisit the Apes saga. I like The Fall a lot, but I
agree that I engaged with it more as a good SF novel than a POTA
book. The Fall was a great SF horror story, and lots of spine-
tingling suspence. Colony is a weird book. I honestly don't know
what to make of it, but I do find the story compelling to read. My
dilemma with Colony is that there are no likeable characters. Even
the "hero" of the tale is bad to the bone.

I gather that Harper Collins has absolutely no intention of
completing the POTA novels that it commissioned. They cancelled
books 3 and 4 of the novella series before they came to fruition. I
have tried to contact both of the advertised authors (Bright and
Whitman) about whether they had actually written the two remaining
books prior to their cancellation, but I had no luck in either case.
The two remaining books had titles and ISBNs that were advertised
for purchase.
Menluth.

Most of you may recall a post I had recently regarding a sizeable lot of
the POTA Adventure Comics that I'm selling (contact me privately if you
didn't see the post and would like a list sent to you) and mention was
made of the colored foldovers that came on the first issue. Someone
mentioned on the DG that there were three different colors- green,
yellow, and pink (all neon), but I also read somewhere else that
Adventure Comics used upwards of 20 different colors. Does anyone know
for sure? I'm really curious about this now.

Also, how many different versions of the limited edition of Ape Nation
(#1) were there?

The best (IMO) image viewer for PCs is IrfanView:

http://www.irfanview.com/

It's free, displays most anything, and nicely resizes images. It's
more viewer than editor, but if all you need to do is resize and
simple edits (cropping, etc), it can't be beat.
