*** Hi, Dave.
I've had to take into account, though, Virdon's line to Burke (when
Galen visits them in their jail cell), that that little disk had a
record of EVERYTHING that had happened to their ship from "the time
we left Earth". Ergo, unless they had left Earth less than 2 hours
earlier -- which I don't think is the case, but that's just my
scenario -- then the disk cannot be "only a temporary record that
gets constantly rewritten over and over". At the very least, it
recorded everything that had happened (telemetrically) from liftoff
to landing. Whether it did so automatically or whether Virdon had it
done as an emergency procedure when things started to go wrong near
Alpha Centauri, that's the question, I think.
Thanks for the input!

Damn, you're good :0)
Yeah, you're right. I should have thought that through more
carefully.
Okay then, as you suggest, maybe the disc is dedicated to
telemetrics - anticipating just such an emergency. A PORTABLE
record of the 'highlights' of the mission. A liitle black box to help
discover what went wrong.
The reel to reel would record the same information PLUS
everything else not directly related. Sleep cycles, personal logs,
incoming and outgoing comms etc.
Or maybe the reel to reel just plays soothing music?

Perhaps the disc has the flight information and the reel-to-reel tapes are to record the mission data, such as the surveys of Alpha Centauri, as well as any other external phenomenon they
encounter during their flight.

.htmlWill,
You'd think that mixing gold/tan/butterscotch with purple wouldn't be a
good combination in terms of costume coloring, but I always liked the
outfit on the Mego Ursus. Actually, I really liked all the Mego outfits,
even though
As far as the color of Captain Kirk's shirt is concerned, it always
struck me as a combination of gold and yellow. In fact, wasn't there a
different shirt he used to wear that had a gold trim around the waist?
Mego's Kirk definitely had a yellow short, but the color used in the
Filmation cartoon seems to be closer to the gold/yellow combination
again. Speaking of which, I really need to pick up a set of those on eBay
one of these days. I keep seeing the Laserdisc box set, but it always
goes for in excess of $100. That price, considering the fact that I can
buy a DVDr set for about $20, is just a bit too steep. One guy even went
as far as to make artwork for the boxes and the DVDs. Each disc featured
a different character- even Nurse Chapel!!

.htmlThanks Will- glad you enjoyed my rambling!! :-)
Seriously though, the point you made about seeing something new while
watching the films at different points in your life, I think, points to
the overall quality of the writing/acting/production et al. A movie is,
after all, the collective sum of all the people associated with it, so a
lot of different people are bringing a lot of different things to the
table.
Another thing I think that has a large effect on the overall
quality/longevity of a film/television program is the intended audience.
To use my example of the old Hanna-Barbera cartoons (Huckleberry Hound
and Yogi Bear) or even Looney Toons (Bugs Bunny especially), the writers
knew they had both adults and children in the audience, so they had to
script something that would appeal to both. Ditto for the early Superhero
cartoon (Spiderman and Fantastic Four in 1967, the Filmation
Batman/Superman/Aquaman cartoons, and even Star Trek and POTA. They knew
the audience was going to be made up of a wide mix, so that had to be
taken into consideration. The first Apes movie was aimed primarily at
adults and I think the script reflects that, but after it was discovered
that there was a large audience of children who were interested, that
became a consideration and the 'adventure' aspect was turned up in
subsequent films (not so much in ESCAPE as the other three, but you know
what I mean).
I'm probably coming up to near 100 viewings of BENEATH, and I still catch
new thing every once in awhile. Even if I don't, that in no way
diminishes my enjoyment of the film (or any of the others for that
matter, including both television series). And obviously we all watch
these repeatedly and all get different things out of them, or else I
don't think we'd have the mailings lists to begin with. :-)

series used certain themes repeatedly in different episodes.
As for whether or not Schiffrin composed all the music, a quick check of
the opening/closing credits should clarify. Who can check this out (I'm

ESCAPE was not available to FSM because of the Varese release, but that

point. Let me get things rolling, and then when we need a show of hands

If anyone has any other suggestion as to how the music should be
combined, now would be the time to say so. I feel the music from both TV

+++ Nostalgia is a powerful thing, my friend.
There are millions of people on this planet who are passionate about
a particular subject. The great majority are passionate about
nothing, which is unfortunate, but not our problem.
Of the people that are passionate about APES -- I bet the vast
majority of them that regularly contribute to our group are AT LEAST
30. APES hooked us in the mid 70s and that was that. We were at
that age in 1974 when POTA exploded and we were stuck in the
epicentre.
Since then, cinema has descended into the dramatic and aesthetic
doldrums -- we get older and bitchier as we witness this -- and have
a wish to communicate with people who remember it "like it was".
Now we have the internet to instantly communicate and swap ideas and
other tidbits. It's like being back in the 70s because you can
communicate in a common language to other people about something you
love.
Hence a devoted fan base.
Someone posted a while ago that the POTADG was the most active group

That's what I think too, when this discussion came up a few months
ago that was one of the suggestions I put forward and it does seem
to make a lot of sense, the thing does seem to be pretty
indistructable.
I just wish the writers had been given the time to explore this a

I just had a quick look in the booklet and -- yes! -- there is your

Congratulations mate. Those two releases (BENEATH and the
CONQUEST/BATTLE CD) were two of the best things to happen for real
APES collectors in the past 10 years.
I also feel their release was independent of the Tim Burton film.
They were not meant as a cash-in - purely a gift to fans who
appreciate the brilliance.
Only 3,000 CDs pressed as well.
I have them both. How many got over to the US and Oz??

The thing that slightly worries me though is that they have been on

Chris L.
Chris:
Actually, yellow (and similar colors like gold, tan and butterscotch) is
opposite of purple on the color wheel and designers/artists are taught that
color wheel opposites "harmonize" well. That's why you see purple and
yellow put together in artwork. It's not as common as much more oft used
color wheel opposites like red and green (Christmas!) and blue and orange
(pretty much the color scheme of any James Cameron film), but I'm pretty
sure that that's why Mego did it for the Ursus/Urko costume. It looks a
little goofy on the figure when you first see it, but those two colors do
harmonize well.
Kirk did have a different shirt that had gold trim around the waist, but
that shirt was green, I believe.
Anyway, thanks for your comments on this subject. I've always wondered what
everyone else thought. I mean, BESIDES that neighbor kid who swore up and
down that Kirk's shirt was orange!

Linda Harrison isn't Asian but she certainly fits in that "exotic" category.

I don't think it was that strange Terry. Back then, theatrical films
eventually mad their way to television. I saw all the Apes films (and the
telemovies) on The 4:30 Movie back when I was a kid. This was after
seeing the theatrical films on the CBS Friday Night Movie in the early to
mid seventies. The films were sold to different television stations and
they programmed them as they saw fit. In addition to The 4:30 Movie, ABC
(Channel 7 in NYC) showed them late at night after their local news

That's what I think too, when this discussion came up a few months

to make a lot of sense, the thing does seem to be pretty
indistructable.
I just wish the writers had been given the time to explore this a

disappearing.

I knew a kid a few years back that was taking some kind of Science
fiction course in the High School he was attending. He told me that they
got to watch classic films like Soylent Green, The Omega Man, The

course, POTA.
I got to read 'Wuthering Heights' and some other equally unforgettable

It's not available yet, but I'm doing the planning. I have a few good
sources now. I'm just waiting for a break from Real Work to have time
to work on them. Since Real Work pays the bills, it gets my priority

.htmlMy POTA-epic-in-progress [which I'm titling "DESTINY OF THE PLANET OF
THE APES", as I've mentioned (elsewhere) before], in which I'm re-
adapting the Effinger episodes along with adapting all the other ones
into prose, will have a "final" TV episode which hinges on them
having the disc all through their adventures.
And, of course, this leads to the question: Where was the disc during
those times when either Burke or Virdon was captured and/or naked
and/or whatever?
Virdon was carrying it with him when they tried to break up the fight-
practising gladiators, when he lost it in the scuffle -- so that
Prefect Barlow could find it on the ground and lead to the plot of
our Trio meddling in Kaymak's affairs, etc.
But did Virdon always carry the disc with him? One might assume so,
since HE is the one who puts all his hopes of "getting back home" in
it. Would Virdon entrust it to Burke, or to Galen? Might not Burke --
who has said flat out that "THIS is home, now... you KNOW it" -- be
tempted to make the disc "disappear", so that Virdon will have to
give up his "bonkers" theory of getting back home? Could it be that
Virdon -- who must trust Burke up to a certain point -- does NOT
trust him with the safekeeping of the precious disc?
Hmmm... Virdon as 'Gollum', with the Disc being the equivalent of the
One Ring... "my precioussss..."
What about Galen? Might it not be safer for Galen to carry the disc?
After all, he COULD tuck it away in that little pocket where his
outfit's "chimp glyph" is, mid-torso? Hmmm... nope; he doesn't HAVE a
chimp-glyph on his outfit, dammit! I was thinking about how Zira kept
her little notepad in a pocket of HER chimp-glyph. Well, we could
always assume that Galen has some other pocket in which he could keep
their precious disc, right?
At the end of the "last" episode ["UP ABOVE THE WORLD SO HIGH"],
Virdon and Burke are nearly naked -- and I can just hear Kass & all
the other chicks on this site panting at the thought -- and one can
only wonder WHERE Virdon might've sequestered that precious disc of
his! Remember the scene in "PULP FICTION" where Christopher Walken
talks to the kid who plays Bruce Willis' character when he was young,
about his "father's watch"?
And how, we might wonder, did the two astronauts dress themselves,
AFTER the end of that episode? Their duds were someplace else -- and
I doubt if they would've gone back to the fishing village to
retrieve 'em. They would've had to get some new clothes, now,
wouldn't they?
If the disc IS still in their possession, I'd submit that Galen would
have to have been carrying it, since he never had to ditch his
clothes during the 14 eps.
Of course, we don't HAVE to assume that the 14th episode was
the "last" one; the order of the episodes is never fixed, with the
exception of "ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW" being the 1st one, and "THE
GLADIATORS" preceding "THE HORSE RACE" (Barlow, etc). "UP ABOVE"
could just as easily be put, chronologically, much earlier; we don't
have to take the "aired" order to be the "true" order. Similarly,
many "STAR TREK" episodes -- which SHOULD be chronologically ordered
by "stardate" -- aired in a different order than that, based on when
each episode's production was finished.

Yes, the cartoon had a giant ape named Kygor. He is the god of the Ice Apes. I think he was a statue that comes to life when they are in trouble. Kind of a King Kong riff. He was in the
episodes "Terror on Ice Mtn." and the last episode "Battle of the Titans". Talking about this makes me feel very dirty. I must wash it off! - - - Jeff

Chris, a giant ape did feature in a couple of episodes.
Without going back through my tapes to find the exact episodes I'll
take a guess at it but I'm pretty sure it's in the one where Bill
and Cornelius use a balloon to get up a mountain to hide a book, and
there is an episode where it fights the flying dragon bird thingy.
Come to think of it wasn't it named Kygoor or something like that?

Highlight the whole link, paste in browser addy bar and go.
To make them work, paste in very small text, but the group has to have htmk
enabled.

This is what I do... I copy the second part, then click on the first
part, then paste in the second part, then click go. Usually it
works -- not always. The book is still available, though. ;)
Someday, someone will tell me how to embed a link that works.

Chris recently mentioned about the "Star Trek" cartoons. I forget if it was mentioned that Fox is planning to put the "Star Wars" animated cartoons on DVD
("Droids" and "Ewoks"). It might be a stretch but maybe this will get them thinking about putting "Return to the POTA" on DVD professionally, especially if the SW ones sell well. As for
"Star Trek", fans are eating up the DVDs so probably the cartoon will be out soon. - - - Jeff

.htmlBy the way,
<mailto: Pota@yahoogroups.com>
Hunter is copying a few then I am burning these for distribution.
I will only ask for the price of the disc and postage.
As it stands, these will be available to everyone on all POTA groups and
members of the fan club.
That's if my understanding of all these groups as joining together in peace
and encouraging the promotion of all as a community is correct - I have been
lead to believe (because of the posts I have sent that were deleted at the
pota group) that I might be wrong, and the pota group might actually be
trying to be competitive AGAINST the other groups. If that's the case then
I'll rethink exclusivity on the discs and many other projects. I hope
that's not the case.
If all these groups is making a better world for POTA because we are
generating more from them and opening different places for fans to go, then
I'm thrilled. However if it is going to be set up for one person to try to
outdo another, then all is lost and Rome is burning (and I'll leave you to
decide who is playing the fiddle!).

transfer them to DVD
I work with the DVD format all the time so I was thinking if someone had the
cartoons on VHS or in WMV or AVI or MPEG format and wanted to send them to
me
I'd be happy to do the editing work and make DVD's of this.
Of course there are others that can do this also and there are sellers
already on ebay with copies on DVD
but i'm willing to tackle the job if anyone is interested in contacting me

they're working on it right now for DVD and it should come out this year or
next. www.tvshowsondvd.com lists Dec. 14 '04 for the release of ST: the
Complete Series. No details but the only "complete" ST series that would fit
on a DVD set would be the cartoon, right? Tvshowsondvd has a 3-part
interview with Gerrold (July '04) under "articles" for those who are
interested. I mentioned the "Star Trek" cartoon because Chris was interested

About the disc [short version]... If you have something THAT

when you first sense danger and going to retrieve it later is easy

Another thing Ron mentioned is in the early episodes his "family" picture

I have a dish for Sky Digital right here at home. I CAN get the Sci-
Fi Channel. I can also tape stuff on S-VHS (400 lines res as
opposed to standard VHS 250 -- better quality.)
Sci-Fi repeats quite alot. Remind me of the title of the show and I
can tape it (PAL - remember). Then perhaps send to someone clever
like Ballard to burn it to DVD for distribution.
Just an offer...

Joe Lozosky told me it was George Ruiz who got discouraged after seeing POTA2001 and dropped the ball on "Apesfan". He was more interested in his DVD website. A pity, I guess they're sitting on enough
articles and interviews for another issue. - - - Jeff
