Hey Terry.

I bought issues #1 - #6.

sale (soon!).

There is a #7 and we are trying to get it. It is in COLOUR!

+++ I think it's safe to assume that the disk was a plot device
forgotten by the writers as the series progressed.

In 1974 series television you had writers working independently of
each other, their work governed by a 6 or 7 page "Writer's Guide"
proforma that gave them a broad sense of the universe in which they
were about to inhabit.

I'm certain that if the show were made nowadays, the disk would've
been touched on alot more. Hell, there were even episodes where the
three fugitives left the story and ran over the nearest hill without
any kind of luggage at all.

Patrick -- forget the (non) logic of the series. Just write your
story. I'm chomping at the bit to see your ideas.

+++ A CD with Schifrin, LaSalle and Hagen's music from the tv series
I would spend money on.

Mark T-B.

P.S. Just want all you chaps to realise that USTV in the 70s was
mixed exclusively in mono. So it would need to be a situation where
you could unearth the original mag stems and remix into stereo.

If anyone can do this -- FSM can!

12. In addition to POTA Creber has a long list of credits. He was
nominated for an Emmy for a 2001 production. He's had 3 Oscar
nominations ("Greatest Story Ever Told", "Poseidon Adventure"
and "Towering Inferno"). Way to go, Bill! - - - Jeff

craftsman that I bow my head to.

Guys that used to research, then draw, then build.

I love his story about how he found the look for Ape City.

He also did VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA and was the most
interesting interviewee in the BEHIND doc.

No Hunter,

I tried to assure that it is NOT to be used as a lure to any groups.

I'm not "having a tantrum" about your conditions, I would just rather
have nothing to do with this - it is silly me losing $5 - $10 each time
I send them and if we get US volunteers, as I'm sure we will, it will be
cheaper to send to the US and UK requesters.

So I don't know what you read into that email, but you were rather
misguided! Settle down tiger! ;)

I've got Glenn's "Wanda" picture on site if you want to take a look.
It's a gorgeous drawing. Wanda's my favorite villan in the series,
though I'm pleased to say not the only one. Also finally put up
Mitrill's POTA story on the fan fic page.

Cool! I'd actually like to complete a set of them in Spanish to go with my
English translations, so if you ever put together a set for sale, please
let me know.

Actually, nope -- I'm doing it myself, as I speak the language.

Yep, so Terry -- if you do get #7, PLEASE let us know! Our efforts to get
a hold of it for translation have hit a snag... hopefully, not a permanent one.

*** Twas I who brought up the bit about Christopher Walken's scene
in "PULP FICTION" -- about "The Watch", remember?

But, that was just me jokin' around. No, I'm NOT gonna have Virdon
safeguarding the disc as if it were Lemmiwinks (and, if you've seen
the "SOUTH PARK" episode I'm referring to, you KNOW what I'm talkin'
about!).

In my POTA-epic/scenario, it'll be Galen who carries the disc, since
his duds have GOT to have a convenient pocket in 'em somewhere where
it'd be safe. Maybe they sew it into the lining of one of his sleeves
or something, who knows?

But I agree with Helen that they would NOT lose it if they could help
it. And, dramatically & thematically & to tie the overarching plot of
the Virdon/Burke/Galen saga all together, we NEED for them to find
that computer Virdon mentions ["What's a computer?"], and EXAMINE the
data contained on it... and Virdon NEEDS to discover a way to get
back home, to the 20th Century.

In my scenario, they WILL discover a working computer cache --
perhaps one similar to the one in Oakland's "midtown railway station"
in "THE LEGACY" -- and they'll find out that when Virdon had Jonesy
hit that "Automatic Homing Device", their ship not only zipped BANG-
ZOOM all the way from Alpha Centauri to Earth... but they ALSO went
BACK-IN-TIME (i.e. EARTH-TIME) from July 14, 3085 to March 21, 3085.
Virdon needs to believe that it is possible to go backwards through
Time, because he yearns to get back from 3085 to whenever it is that
they left Earth, where his wife and son await him... and when he
finds out that back-through-Time travel IS possible (because they've
already done it once), he'll know HOW they did it, and endeavor to do
it again.

Whether or not he succeeds, well... that's another thing.

Mmmm - interesting.

Dave, Neil or Mike -- have you ever studied photography or are any
of you exponents of B&W vs. colour -- in any medium?

I know that colourising BTB is an important stage towards getting it
into the market, and I applaud you for your efforts -- but y'know
what...?

BEWARE THE BEAST is better in black and white. Alot better.

It looks like a comic now. A comic. Neil's stuff now sits on the
page as artwork when before I just saw Gideon's dilemma.

THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM. Purely an observation. Hell, I know quite
a few old cinema cameraman who hated the invention of colour
photography because they believed that -- from the point of view of
pure storytelling -- colour "simply gets in the way".

Opinions?

You know, I didn't think about this artistically before, but color
DOES get in the way with textbooks. The more color and fancy
illustrations, the more distracting it is for the learner. And with
hyperactive kids, black and white is the only way to go. IMHO

But, it was so very pretty.

+++ Yep. Oddly, it actually IS easier to get people to concentrate
on a story if it's in black and white. In all mediums.

It's part psychological and part aesthetic.

Fascinating... absolutely fascinating. The description even says that "They
perform in a wild frenzy, often including people in ape garb from the old
movie series on-stage with them." My favorite titles from some of their
songs are "Ursus' Helmet," "We Want Guns" and "Kung Fu Grip." Being a G.I.
Joe collector as well as an Apes fan, I can really relate to the last one.

*** Well, as far as the TV show is concerned, the disc was introduced
in the pilot ["ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW"] and its recovery was the plot-
trigger for the episode "THE GLADIATORS" and after that they never
mentioned it again!

They don't show it; they don't say that they lost it; they don't say
that they still have it. None of that.

IF they still have it -- throughout ALL the 14 episodes -- then I'd
suggest that Virdon entrusted its safekeeping to Galen. It would be
safest with him, and chances are Galen's duds have POCKETS in which
it could be tucked away for the eventual future use Virdon hopes to
have for it.
The "LAST thing that has happened to it" that anyone can possibly
know of, is that Virdon has it back in his possession after Barlow
returns it to him, following the events of "THE GLADIATORS".

Virdon DID lose the photograph of himself with Sally and Chris --
since Zaius has it in his possession after Virdon had been captured
in "THE LEGACY" and, indeed, uses it to come up with his
psychological plan to trick Virdon into divulging the whereabouts of
Galen & Burke -- to Arn and Kraik as his pseudo-wife-and-son. I don't
see any way in which Virdon could possibly have gotten that
photograph back from Zaius -- he's lost it for good. And, it just
MIGHT be that Zaius' possession of that photograph leads, in time, to
the Ape re-invention of photography (i.e. the Apes "retroengineer"
the photograph, finding out what type of material the image is
captured on, and figuring out how to duplicate it, etc).

But the disc? As far as we know, the Fugitives still have it
with 'em, probably kept in a pocket of Galen's duds. That's how I see
it, anyway.

Patrick,

I disagree. I don't think Galen would be the likely one to carry the
disc.

You are assuming that the boys have no pockets. That just doesn't
make sense. I can't imagine any man I know going through a day
without pockets. It is very easy to sew pockets into clothes, and
anyone (even a man) can do it. The disc would require a small pocket
that could be easily hidden in a seam. With a drawstring, it could
be easily accessed and the disc could be removed quickly and
transferred to a new hiding place if a threat occurred.

Galen was equally suspect and his clothing would be in no less danger
of a search than the boys. In fact, knowing the manufacture of his
clothing and knowing that it HAS pockets makes him a more likely
candidate to be searched.

Also, his lack of understanding of the importance of the disc
probably makes him less protective of the disc. Only a person whose
hopes are wrapped up in the disc would have the almost instinctive
drive to see that it was kept safe. I think Virdon has it.

+++ Patrick,

With all due respect, I simply do not agree that Virdon would have
given the disk to Galen.

We are NOT talking rationality here. This is a human being's last
chance to retain his family, identity, environment -- his very
existence. The man Virdon would've kept it close. I think it
would've made him feel better.

++Er, yeah. I wrote my last post before I read Helen's.

Talking of pockets, remember what Virdon made for Kraik in THE
LEGACY?

to carry your things in."

I can see the benefit of having BOTH!

If I end up buying the license and printing this myself it WILL be in B&W.

If a major comic publisher takes it on, they will likely COLOUR it - it is
hard to FIND a B&W comic nowdays!

I would be happy to see BOTH! Happy or greedy - or are the two the same

Hi John and welcome.

We are currently revising our policies and rules, but I suggest this
for the sale of things:

Essentially, if a FAN is looking for something, then fine. Ask away
and you'll get various answers.

Recently a few dealers have shown up on the group and instantly
started throwing up ads for POTA stuff. Now I'm thankful it is POTA
and not Viagra (!), but who the hell are these people?

Terry has stuff for sale - he is undoubtably a fan and so I say
allow it. People (certainly myself) often post eBay links...I think
that's OK too.

It's just people we don't know coming in out of the blue that
bothers me.

Comments?

anyone (even a man) can do it. The disc would require a small pocket
that could be easily hidden in a seam. With a drawstring, it could be
easily accessed and the disc could be removed quickly and transferred
to a new hiding place if a threat occurred.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
*** Both points well taken. But, if I may, I'd like to point out that
at the ending of "TOMORROW'S TIDE", when Virdon and Burke are dressed
in nuthin' but loincloths, yet Galen is fully dressed in his green
chimp duds, Virdon doesn't mention anything whatsoever about having
to go and get their clothes from Gato's daughter, or anything like
that. I'll have to go back and watch the episode again (hell, ALL
of 'em again soon!), but it doesn't look to me like Virdon has
anywhere on his person to keep that precious disc when he and Burke
and Galen are out on that raft headin' away from the fishing village.

Either Virdon DOES have it tucked away in his loincloth (or, uh,
hidden away somewhere where sunlight doesn't shine), or he's already
lost it, or Burke has it in HIS loincloth (etc), or Galen has it in
some pocket or other.

I agree that Virdon would be extremely protective of the Disc, to the
point of obsession. And he DOES use a little bag, or something,
in "THE GOOD SEEDS" in which he keeps his self-made compass -- which
allowed 'em to travel at night, when Urko's gorillas couldn't follow
due to navigational problems. Does Virdon keep the Disc in that bag
along with his compass, etc.? Is that bag small enough to fit inside
the loincloth he's seen wearing at the end of "TOMORROW'S TIDE"?

"Hey, Alan, is that a bag of trinkets in your loincloth, or are you
just happy to see me?" I can just hear Burke yokkin' it up...

This question of "Who has the Disc" is an EXTREMELY important one to
me, for the sake of my POTA epic project, and I want to make sure
that Virdon DOES have it in the 'final' and '15th' episode I'm
writing (the 'chapter' of my book which will be titled "ESCAPE TO
YESTERDAY", harkening back to the pilot episode's title), because the
information on that disc will enable him and Burke to attempt to
accomplish what he foolishly hopes to do: get back to the Past, to
his wife and son.

So... when he's nearly naked at the end of "TOMORROW'S TIDE", and IF
the disc is still in their possession... does Virdon have it in his
loincloth, hidden away in a little bag o' trinkets with his compass,
a small knife, etc? Or... might he not have reasoned that it would be
safest to have Galen carry it in a pocket? Sure, they're ALL
fugitives on this crazy planet... but a gun-totin' gorilla would be
more likely to shoot either of the two HUMAN targets he might see,
rather than the APE travelling with 'em.

After all, the "most sacred law" of the Apes is: "Ape shall NEVER
kill Ape". Even when it's considered "legal" and "justifiable" -- as
in the case of a State-warranted execution -- there still would be an
instilled repugnance to the very idea of an Ape shooting another Ape.
I wonder how many times Galen is shot at by a gorilla who probably
COULD have hit him... yet 'missed' after all. Virdon wasn't so lucky.
This, despite the fact that Galen is probably the first ape in who
knows HOW long to have "murdered" another ape -- the gorilla
lieutenant/assassin whom Urko had told "you KNOW what I expect you to
do... after dark..." The gorillas know that the 3 fugitives
are "enemies of the state" and that Galen is a fugitive not only for
having befriended the dangerous humans and fled with them, but also
for having supposedly "murdered" Urko's lieutenant. A fellow gorilla.
And yet, so many bullets MISS Galen when gorilla rifles are aiming at
him!

Anyway, I just don't think it's in the realm of impossibility that
Virdon -- despite his NEED to have his precious disc close to him --
would reason that it might be safer to have it in Galen's possession.
If it was in Galen's pocket, at the end of "TOMORROW'S TIDE", then it
follows that Virdon wouldn't have any worries about the disc's
whereabouts: HE may be nearly naked, but GALEN still is dressed in
his familiar duds. And IN a pocket of those duds, I suspect, the Disc
is safe and sound. Hence, Virdon doesn't worry about it, or about
retrieving any of his other belongings -- the clothes he and Burke
left behind in the fishing village. Those clothes can be replaced...
but the disc CAN'T.

Patrick

P.S. In "THE LEGACY", Virdon is captured by gorillas, and Zaius
acquires from him the photograph of him and his wife Sally and their
son Chris. Whatever belongings Virdon was carrying on his person WERE
CONFISCATED. I'm sure that if Zaius had him searched, and they were
able to find the photograph -- an item almost as precious to Virdon
as the disc is -- then they also would've found the disc, IF it had
been there to find.

Why didn't they find the disc, too? Perhaps it wasn't there to be
found. Either it had been lost prior to that, or Virdon had left it
with the holograph-projector machine in the Oakland Science
Institute, or he wasn't carrying it himself anymore. If he could lose
it during the fight with Dalton and Tolar so easily, perhaps THAT
taught him that he needed a better-made receptacle for that precious
disc -- say, in a top-of-the-line "ape's new suit" like the one Galen
wears.

I don't think that Virdon would've kept the photograph in a pocket or
a bag AND left the disc in the Oakland Science Institute [OSI]at the
same time. But he might have. He might've thought that going out into
the streets of the wrecked city would expose them to the danger of
possibly being captured or killed by the gorillas who patrol the
town... and it would be best to leave the disc in the OSI, where they
would work on a battery to get the gizmo working again.

But he brings along the photograph, nevertheless. He might feel that
losing the photo is not as important as losing the disc; the photo
merely reminds him of what he wants to get back to... but the disc is
a tangible item which holds out hope of his actually getting back to
them. Sentimentality would force him to keep the picture always with
him... but NOT the disc, necessarily. He would take less of a chance
with losing the disc. So, either he left it at the OSI, or he
entrusted its safekeeping to a pocket in Galen's clothing.

Most of us here are well acquainted with the fact that Rod Serling
co-penned POTA as well as having helmed the classic Twilight Zone TV

Now someone has repackaged the entire movie into classic TZ format.

+++ Thanks Dario.

I downloaded this a while ago and think it's an incredibly
interesting take on the original story.

The Rod Serling Twilight Zone half-hour format mixed in with the
original apes movie is an intriguing angle on the film we love.

Plus (and guys, some of you out there know what I'm talking about) --
you get to see the original POTA in BLACK AND WHITE!!!!!

Yes!

Mark T-B.

P.S. A quick open question for all of you.

I previously posted a couple of Apes-related links for everyone to
look at. However, I get a bit nervous doing this because I assume
all of you are very computer savvy and have seen it all before.

I have found some quite interesting stuff at times. May I continue
to drop web links into the conversation?

I will apologise now to those of you who say: "Oh -- I've seen
that!" But remember -- many have not.

For example -- how many of you have seen that intriguing fan-
produced film where a gorilla garrison finds Brent's ship and
launches it?

I loved that.

Hi Mark.

I had NOT seen a lot of these links and it is silly not to post them -
as you now know we get on average 5-6 new members a week here and while
we may be going over the same ground for some, the whole reason we are
here is to be a RESOURCE for POTA fans. If you have heard it before or
seen it before, skip over it. There's always something interesting
around the corner on this group to keep you going.

To the many new members, WELCOME. Don't be shy...say what you want - as
silly as you think it might sound. You won't be judged here and you
won't be attacked.

By the way Mark, I have heard about the Fan Produced film where they
find Brent's ship but I have not seen it. Is Gideon involved? ;)

Well, I count #1 - #15 in MY collection (PLUS the special Kingdom on an

may not be! It has no number, and the cover is a combination of Escape

#14 concludes Beneath.

#15 shows the Escape cover with a chimp looking out that Earth's
destruction, BUT contains a Terror story (When the Lawgiver Returns) and
a Chronicles story (City of Nomads).

Then the comic I THOUGHT was #16 starts with the CONCLUSION of Escape
(In the Cradle of a Father's Sins) and the first part of Conquest. So
maybe that is #17 and I am missing #16, or someone buggered up!

The issue I always thought was #17 has no number on the cover. On
the inside splash page it does mention Vol.1 No.17 but I believe
this is wrong.
The Newton #15 I have (Cornelius looking at earth being destroyed
cover) has Vol.1 No.12 on the inside splash page so I am thinking
(without having time to check) that this would be the original US
issue that one of the re-printed stories in the Newton issue or
cover was from??

Hey Terry,

As you can see by previous posts the subject of the numbering of
Newton POTAs is getting a bit confusing!

Any way I have uploaded a scan of the comic that I had assumed was
#17, though now I'm not sure what number it could be!

It's in the photos section in the Comic covers folder:

http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/potadg/vwp?.dir=/Comic+covers&.s
rc=gr&.dnm=Aussie+POTA+%2317+(maybe).jpg&.view=t&.done=http%

Hope this helps!

Terry, I have also uploaded the 2 un-numbered Newton issues that I
have, to the Comic covers folder in the photos section.

Did you know that the 1st issue was later re-released a couple of
times by Yaffa publishing in Australia (once in '78 and again in '82)
but this time the cover colouring was closer to the US original than
the Newton #1 was?

What's in the one with the gorilla on the horse - I don't have that one?
What are the stories?

Hey Terry,

As you can see by previous posts the subject of the numbering of
Newton POTAs is getting a bit confusing!

Any way I have uploaded a scan of the comic that I had assumed was
#17, though now I'm not sure what number it could be!

It's in the photos section in the Comic covers folder:

http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/potadg/vwp?.dir=/Comic+covers
<http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/potadg/vwp?.dir=/Comic+covers&.s>
&.s
rc=gr&.dnm=Aussie+POTA+%2317+(maybe).jpg&.view=t&.done=http%
3a//photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/potadg/lst%3f%26.dir=/Comic%
2bcovers%26.src=gr%26.view=t

Hope this helps!

the #17 written very small

So it is, my copy is so worn and damaged in that area that it is
really hard to see!

First story is Terror phase two: Up the nose-tube to monkey-trash.

Second is Escape psrt 3: Trouble in paradise lost.

Third is Future history chronicles 2: dreamer in emerald silence.

There is also the re-printed photo/article section: Shaping a simian
world.
