.htmlThe "POTA Archives" cards were excellent on this account. They had some
unique photos and even shots from cut footage. Rare production designs
(including architecture). That was a set! Too bad they apparently didn't
well. And that was during the heighth of anticipation for the new "Ape"
movie. Maybe with people not liking POTA2001 and kids considering the
originals ancient relics a decent card set isn't feasible. - - - Jeff

Maybe because the artwork is more, how shall I say,
'conventional'? than we're used to seeing from Neil and the fact
that the ape always seems to be smiling, I'm getting a much
lighter sense of mood from this. Of course it's too early to tell but
I wonder... will this be a dose of welcome relief from the doom
and gloom of BtB?
I'm confident the feedback will develop along with the strip. Keep
it coming.

"Guest stars" can just be actors in featured
roles for that episode. It doesn't mean big name "stars". Though Kim Hunter said
she was approached to guest and she turned it down. Some "guest stars" went on
to be famous, like Michael Conrad ("Hill Street Blues"), Sondra Locke (Clint
Eastwood movies) and Marc Singer ("Beastmaster", "V"). If the show had been made
in the '80's these actors might have been considered celebrities. - - -

I think John Ireland in 'The Liberator' was about the only guest I

Come to think of it, when a show has a
celebrity on they are usually referred to as "special guest stars". That's
because they don't have enough ego already. - - - Jeff

Oh well, they may have done better if they had had Kim Hunter and

"Guest stars" can just be actors in featured roles for that episode.
It
doesn't mean big name "stars". Though Kim Hunter said she was approached
to
guest and she turned it down. Some "guest stars" went on to be famous,
like
Michael Conrad ("Hill Street Blues"), Sondra Locke (Clint Eastwood
movies)
and Marc Singer ("Beastmaster", "V"). If the show had been made in the
'80's
these actors might have been considered celebrities. - - - Jeff

This TV Series 'Bible' is actually very interesting. I'm curious,
though. It states: "The above description of the Human Inhabitants
of this upside down society provides a wide spectrum of dramatic
roles which will enable us to utilize Guest Stars." Just who DID
they use for guest stars? IMHO, the biggest stars were the regular
cast. Were there big name guest stars placed about as humans? I
admit to being somewhat unfamiliar with "big names" (my 9-y-o being
better at recognizing actors than I), but I don't recall any.
Forgive my stupidity. My point: maybe the show would have done
better if they actually had exciting guest stars.

My highly reliable public opinion sampling system, consisting entirely of taking the word of taxi drivers for everything, leads me to the conclusion that "

Somehow the chemistry has gone to work, the word has gotten around and the mass audience is interested. There was even a line in front of the theater Friday morning, and that's a sight you don't see every day.
Since "Planet" already seems to have found its audience, then, I thought I'd address this review to the others -- to those who wouldn't be caught dead going to see anything called "
Planet of the Apes."
I can understand their bias; until I started reviewing movies I probably wouldn't have gone to see it either. And any number of friends have been telling me they've heard it was "awful" -- when, in
fact, nobody in Chicago had seen it until Friday and the reviews from other cities have been pretty good.
What they were really implying was that any movie named "Planet of the Apes'' had to be awful. This kind of snobbery may be good for a chuckle or two, but those who practice it miss a lot of entertaining

"Planet of the Apes
" is one. It is not great, or significant, or profound. Occasionally it is distractingly cute, as when the apes rewrite one cliché after another: "Man see, Man do," for example, or "To apes, all
men look alike." but, this is part of the fun. So is that much-publicized ape makeup: it does look real, by jingo, and after awhile you really do start thinking of those apes as individuals.
The plot is cast in the time-proven Hollywood adventure tradition. A space explorer from Earth (
Charlton Heston
) crash-lands on an unknown planet where apes rank higher than men on the evolutionary ladder. He tries to convince his captors he is intelligent; there are some good action sequences; some amusing twists; some
easily digestible sociological and philosophical points, and a thoroughly satisfactory surprise ending.
Heston is by now just about the only Hollywood actor capable of playing archetypal heroes -- Moses, Ben-Hur, the last man alive, etc. -- and there must be a reason. In stature and screen presence, he is heroic and he is
noble; you've got to admit it. He's right for this role, however preposterous it really may be, and he carries the film effortlessly. The actors hidden behind that ape makeup (
Kim Hunter,
Maurice Evans,
Roddy McDowall
, etc.) are difficult to review as people, but they're fine as apes.
What I'm getting at, I guess, is that "
Planet of the Apes
" is much better than I expected it to be. It is quickly paced, completely entertaining, and its philosophical pretensions don't get in the way.
If you only condescend to see an adventure thriller on rare occasions, condescend this time. You have nothing to lower but your brow.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes
Roger Ebert / July 10, 1973
Cast & Credits
Caesar Roddy McDowall
Also Claude Akins
Lisa Natalie Trundy
Kolp Severn Darden
Film is presented by 20th Century-Fox, directed by
J. Lee Thompson
and produced by Arthur P. Jacobs. Written by John and Joyce Corrington. Photographed by Richard H. Kline. Classified PG.
"
Battle for the Planet of the
Apes" is the fifth and, merciful God, the last of the ape movies. It takes place long after
Charlton Heston
and even
James Franciscus
have faded from the scene; we have a new generation headed by Caesar (
Roddy McDowall
), who is the son of the original ape leaders, Cornelius and Zira. Caesar is nonviolent and practices mutual co-operation with the human colony, but there's a militarist junta of trigger-happy professional
gorilla soldiers plotting to overthrow the government.
Meanwhile, Caesar plans an expedition to the Forbidden City (which was destroyed by nuclear war in the last ape movie, you will doubtless vividly recall), in order to view a videotape made by his late parents. In it,
they predict that the city will be destroyed by nuclear war. Thanks a lot. But the expedition also discovers that in the ruins of the city's subterranean vastness, a few mutant humans still survive.
Unlike the good humans, these humans have been weakened by radiation. Their leader is Severn (Second City) Darden, who seems somewhat unlikely in the role at first. But Darden, who is a comedian to the core, manages to
salvage a glimmer of Mad Dictator savoir faire from the role, and who but the beloved Severn could lead a retreat wearing ski goggles and riding in a commandeered school bus? Meanwhile, back at Ape City, Caesar's
young son has eavesdropped on the militarists and discovered their plans to raid the armory and bring an end to 12 years of peace. He is discovered by the evil gorilla leader, who hacks a vine in two and sends young
Cornelius plunging to the ground. Thereupon Caesar, blinded by grief, keeps a vigil at his son's bedside while the gorillas put all the humans in the stockade and plunder the armory.
Now here things become slightly complicated. We are asked to sympathize with Caesar the nonviolent. We are also asked to boo the bad guys, who are the human mutants from the Forbidden City. But then the demented Darden
leads his kamikaze raid on the healthy and uncontaminated Ape City; it is the militarist gorillas that fight back the onslaught. So maybe the message is that nonviolence is great if you have an army to back it up?
The movie is incompetently made, which is something of a surprise considering that it was directed by an old and good hand, J. Lee ("The Guns of Navarone") Thompson. Transitions are ragged, a lot of the dialog
is inaudible and the rest is listless, and the apes spend a lot of time sitting around discussing abstractions. The battle footage looks cheap. And the story is painfully thin.
"Battle" looks like the last gap of a dying series, a movie made simply to wring the dollars out of any remaining ape fans. To a degree, that's also the case with the new (and ninth) James Bond movie,
"To Live and Let Die." But at least with that one, some attempt was made to reproduce the technical gimmicks and wry eroticism of the earlier films; in "Battle," there's simply no reason at all
for going. Anyone who hasn't had enough apes after the first four in the series has probably, by now, gone ape all by himself.

You got part of it, Jeff. It is THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES. Buck Kartalian was in it, as was Woodrow "Maximus" Parfrey, who also appeared in another Eastwood movie DIRTY HARRY.
Also, some of THE OUTLAW JOSIE WALES was shot at the same Lake Powell location where the astronauts have their "water check" in PLANET. Look for it the next time you see the movie.

Yes, you are quite right about this.
Steve at Rittenhouse actually offered to TAKE me into the vaults at Fox, and
as far as I know that offer still stands.
Steve said he was extremely disappointed with what he saw, BUT.... I really
don't know if he knew what to look for! What looks like crap to him might
be gold to us.
I am planning to go to the US next year and I will certainly try to organise
a trip to the vaults. I'd even offer to Fox that we ape fans (well, those
who aren't trying to claw other ape fans' eyes out) scrutinise each photo
and give a brief synopsis.
Until we get somebody who knows what is around and what is rare and what is
common etc to have a look, we won't know what they have on hand.
Whether POTA is a large or small part of the Archives, it is INDEED
overlooked.

That may be true, but if it is, they sure don't use them...(I "think")
Whitty said the guy at Rittenhouse said he had very little to look at
as far as pics from APES. And, if they have an extensive archive on APES,
then they should have had a HUGE photo gallery on the 35th Anniversary DVD,
but they didn't...
While they might have a huge archives altogether, then APES is either
a small part of it, or VERY overlooked.

I was watching some of the extras on the latest POTA DVD and on one

I'm not sure what the music is in the NATO film, probably stock stuff from some older Fox films. The music in the test film with Edward G. Robinson is from the TV show "Lost in Space," and is probably
written by Herman Stein or Leith Stevens.

say hello and draw your attention to a few things.
Please feel free to jump in and contribute if a subject takes your
fancy, or start one up yourself!
MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE HOMEPAGE AND READ THE NEW PLANET OF THE APES
COMIC BOOK - BEWARE THE BEAST!!!
Go to the homepage, scroll down to around the middle of the page and
click on the link underneath the colourful logo....this will take
you to the internal site where you can go to earlier chapters by
clicking on the menu at top of the images.
We have recently started a NEW comic strip called WITHIN THE PLANET
OF THE APES which can be found in the files section of the group or
you can just click on the handy link on the Home Page to view the
latest and previous chapters!
Don't forget we also have 3 other groups 'attached' to the main one.
First up there is the DG Archives group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGrouparchives/
This group was created to store old posts from the group which have
been deleted from the main site. we have to do this periodically to
free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups
anymore.
As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and
instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them
all. They can be found in the Files section listed by month and
year .
There is also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in
the group's Files section, their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to
be enjoyed by all:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupfanfiction/
Finally there's the Photos group:
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDiscussionGroupphotos/
Where photos are very occasionally moved to save space on the main
DG group
All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's
Home Page.
And don't forget to check out the DG group's vast Photos section and
all that great stuff in the Files section. While you're here why not
participate in a Poll or check out all those wonderful links and
generally have a fun filled family experience!

Someone brought this up (I'm not sure if it was this group or another one) but it got me thinking about the comparison between Urko and President Bush. I know that politics shouldn't really be discussed, but
if you think about it they both have a lot in common.
Urko believes that kill the astronaunts and Galen is a good idea and will keep his world safe. Bush believe that going to war against Iraq is a good idea because he thinks it will keep the American people safe.
Urko doesn't really know and doesn't really care to educate himself about the astronauts. He blindly believes everything that Zaius tells him, up to a point, and does it.
I was thinking... if I were given the choice to keep my family and friends safe by killing a couple people would I do it? Heck yah! It may not be for all the right reasons and all the people might not think it is
right, but it is my view. For example: In grammar school I used to beat up this one boy and make him cry everyday because he was mean to my best friend. Some people didn't think it was right, but to me it was right
because I was protecting someone I loved.
There are so many parallels between the Planet of the Apes and our world it is just amazing. I could go on about how different things relate, but I guess that is part of the reason that they made it the way they did.
Those are just some random musings I felt I had to get out.

.htmlGreat info, Mike R. Thanks for sharing this. Guys, there is a lot
of cool stuff over there. Click on "Weekly Updates" or "Update" or
whatever and find a long list of Pota links -- many of which you may
know, but I found some I hadn't seen.
Welcome Palitoy01! Let us know what's up!
