.html Independent is a poor description of the humans on the tv show,it is true they are not really independent. You bring up a valid point about the farmers, they are under the control of the apes. But a human who is a personal slave is probably better off in the food department. Zaius' slave who we see in one episode, probably is better fed than a human farmer. Elaine<.html

I remember talking about hair ornaments. What did the Apes have for
ornamentation anywhere? (Except, of course, their glyphs!) I think
they were seriously influenced by the Amish Community!

Maybe it's just mimicry? The whole civilization is based on
human culture even though they aren't aware of it (or willing to
own up to it). Maybe the lust for gold is some kind of cultural
hand-me-down whose origins have been lost.

Or maybe it prized for its rarity.

When I made Juba a bounty hunter my biggest worry was what
the bounty might be. I figured, without ever going into detail, that
there was a kind of tiered monetary system in place. The poorer
apes would use a mainly barter type system. (Skills and crops)
The middle class apes might trade livestock, slaves and land
and the upper class apes might use a crude form of money
(possibly gold coins)

Then there's Zaius and Urko - They'd have Simian Express credit
cards :0)

Hi Dave! It's good to see you.

I'm thinking that is the most likely case. Apes ape humans.

I agree what you say here makes a lot of sense.

Well, except for the Simian Express Card – everybody knows they use Ape City Bank Cards!  J

Ah, good!! You found us!!

I can't imagine being in a position where I could dress like an ape
and mingle with like-minded people in droves as you must be able to
do. That is so cool.

There is a link on our site that will take our members to your bio.

Were you an Apes fan before you joined Apemania?

Brian Penekis, who does our make-up is just amazing. He started the
group out for fun, then it turned into this wonderful group. He is
the driving force behind all of us and the most incredible make-up
artist I've ever worked with.
In the beginning, it took about 3 hours for each make-up. Now he
has it down to about an hour. With the help of the original molds
he aquired. It's so much fun.

Ok. Fantasy time. I would really love to get made up with the goop
and the prosthetics and the fur and all the gunk. (This is totally
weird for me because wool sweaters make me itch, but I want to do it
some day.) I didn't know about it, until after having emailed Brian
a few times and cruising his site. Now tell me, did you know what
it involved? Did you expect to be in a chair so long getting made
up? What is it like?

It is such a fascinating process that staying still that long doesn't bother me, and to see the stages of the transformation is so much fun.  If you're clausterphobic, I don't know if you could do this, it is a lot of glue and make up and pieces on the face and it always takes me a couple hours in make-up to get use to it every time.
The process of learning to do the facial movements with the pieces on took some time, you really have to exaggerate your face to get it to move.
And eating is a challenge.  Straws are mandatory to drink  but you get use to using your fingers or a fork in getting food to the back of the mouth pieces to eat.  I think in all our excursions, we've eaten everything from pizza to sushi.  You just have to wipe your mouth when you're done, like every other creature.

Do you consider yourself a patient person to begin with? It's such
a long process. And doesn't it take a long time to remove the
appliances, too. So if you decide to start putting on the makeup,
you have to commit for the long term, I should think.

I laughed when I saw you eat the peanuts (or popcorn) during the
Grapes of Wrath weekend. You looked like you do it all the time,
but I couldn't imagine it. It was very natural looking. Was it
staged? I loved it!!

I think I'm patient with things I'm interested in, but not always patient with other things.
Removing the make-up is definately the hardest part.  You have to use solvent, vey patiently, at the mask pieces.  Some of the guys in the group just rip them off harder than they should, if we don't need the pieces for next time.
My skin is so sensitive that I have to really take my time.  Brian is so wonderful though, he usually helps me so I don't get so frustrated.  Have you met him in person?

No. I haven't met Brian. I have to say, though, that I really have
a warm spot in my heart for him. He really encouraged us in our
little Apes project. He's a special person.

You've been with Apemania for a long time, right? So, what's it
like being the one female of the troop?

Yes, the introduction to the character was so much fun for me to see, and thinking that I was going to portray her.  I couldn't wait to get the make-up on after that.  I must have watched it 3 times in a row that night.
Plus the first movie is my favorite because of the simple brilliance of the story.  I think things got muddled after that, though I love all the movies.

Being the only girl in the group, it probably feels like the females in your group!  It certainly is a man dominated place.  But I love them all, they are so much fun to be around.  Everyone has such a different personality with Brian being the loving dad of the group.  We even fly a guy in from Colorado from time to time to be with us.
Things can get a little nasty from time to time, but they are all pretty much gentlemen around me.

You've been with Apemania for a long time, right?  So, what's it
like being the one female of the troop?

When you put on the face, did you feel an enchantment of sorts? We
just felt so drawn into the Apes persona. Watching someone else get
made up was almost spookY. Is that the "stages" that you are

There is definately an enchantment that comes about when we all morph into our alter egos.
As we layer on the pieces, we are watching each other go through the same process and we all enter into another world.  Our voices immediately change and our posture changes with the make-up and especially putting on the costume pieces.  From that moment, we are all apes, we don't digress to our human sides.  We talk, walk, eat, joke and sit as our characters.  I have so blessed to be a part of  this.

My favorite experience would definately be at the 30th anniversary of the movie, when we sat, dressed as our charcters, right next to Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall and Charleton Heston durring the preview of the movie.  My shoulder was touching Roddy's.  And Kim sat on the other side of me.  Mr. Heston and his wife were directly in front of us.  He kept turning around and talking to us, amazed at our make-up.  We then got to party with them and had many photo ops.

There hasn't been much going on lately with Apemania.  Unfortunately, I think the new movie kind of hurt us in some weird way.  People were concentrating on that new look for a while.  Though I think the new movie should not have been made.
We have gone to Vegas a few times and I know a few of the others have traveled other places when they just needed 1 or 2 characters.

It is an exact replica of the original costume.  Brian aquired some original costumes, and we had our costumes made directly from them.  We have worn the originals before, which was a huge thrill, but for our work, we don't want to get them soiled and dirty.

Fortunately, the glue and prosthetics we use these days are so far advanced from what Kim and the crew used.  She told me it was torture on her face and she admired us for doing it now.
If we have 3 or 4 days in a row when we wear make-up, my face definately shows it but I try to keep it moisturized well and I don't wear my own make-up when we have down time.

Well, everyone, I have an audition to get to but this has been so much fun.  I would love to come back through the week if I'm still invited.  I could come back on Tues night if that's allright.
Thank you so much for inviting me to do this.  I'm just thrilled you guys are interested in this.
I have so much fun and glad people love it too.

I dunno. It sure didn't feel as if he loved anyone but himself.
And he sure made a big stink about losing Stewart. And he sort of
implied that he would have to settle for Animal Woman, Nova. I
never felt that there was much there in the way of emotional
attachment, but who am I? I'm not a shrink. It's possible that he
was madly, hopelessly in love with Nova, but I didn't actually feel
as if he was. I could believe he was secretly in love with Zira;
she had class. But not Nova. Nah.

I don't mind giving the guys a break; never even mentioned it. I was

it doens't matter I guess. I can always get them in the Files

Hi again, Luke,

Those comics still exist and will be back in their original
location...

... well... in due time.

No worries. We haven't destroyed them, and I haven't let my
children within 15 feet of them with a magic marker!!! ;)

Ah, Luke... Do you like fan fiction? You should join us here all
day Thursday. We'll be talking about Pota Fan Fiction. Thursday
evening we have a couple guests and things are coming together
nicely for a nice little celebration of pota fan fic.

You're brilliant, Helen. They should seriously go to Branson,
Missouri since it is second only to Nashville when it comes to
productions and stuff. Never minding the fact that I'm moving there
soon. :) I'd love to see them... as long as I don't die from the

I think it would be better if Apemania just put together a video that we could all buy.  All I have is that John Chambers Tribute video and that's now several years old.

I doubt they could do it though -- because Fox would want a large fee.

Excellent!!! I will tyr to be here. Now I am still a little new to
the group thing. Do you all chat in a room and discuss different
things or just post on the web page? Sounds interesting.

I especially like the fan comics. Especially the ones dealing with
the TV series. It is so sad they axed it when they did. I still
remeber it getting the ax when I was a kid.

Cost me about $30 for a standard black metal frame, although I could have selected some cheaper options with regards to the plexiglass and such.

Yeah, there was something going on there.
If Nova and Cornelius weren't in the picture
they'd have been riding off down the beach.
But even in the novel Nova was jealous of Zira,
and Zira looked down on him because of her,

But I do think that he loved Nova in his own way.
Sure she was a bit retarded, and she couldn't talk,

Well, Luke, if you haven't been around much, you've walked into a
bit of a trap. The ladies of the DG have staged a Take Over of the
PotaDG. We've tied up the members of the boys' club (put you all on
moderation, in case you haven't noticed) and redecorated the hall.

Now about the forum for discussion. We are tying something that is
a little new for us. The ladies have invited some guests to join us
during this week.. With the guys tied up in the back room, we feel
a little more comfortable having guests about. :)

We played with the chat feature, and it's a bit unreliable, so we
are bringing guests right along with us on the web page. There are
a few glitches there, as well, but as we saw yesterday, it works.
We'll have it all figured out by the time we cut the boys loose
again.

(Were we going to do that, girls?)

As far as what we usually do... We usually hang out here and talk
about rude stuff...

No!! This, too will pass....

Welcome, Luke.

;)

Helen

I always felt that his feelings toward Nova were more protective than
loving. I think he felt responsible for Stewart's death, maybe even
that he'd let her down somehow since he was the leader of the
mission, and he transferred those feelings to Nova, especially after
she was singled out and grouped with him.

Today, Tuesday, 12:00Noon Eastern: Sarah Baeckler, Coordinator of the
Chimpanzee Collaboratory will join us for an interview and
discussion about her work, chimps in the theater, chimp sanctuaries,
etc.

Also... tonight, we welcome back Michelle Juhlin from Apemania. It
will be great to spend more time talking Apes with Michelle. We
don't have a set time for this event. Just be here.

Wednesday, 12:00Noon Eastern: Robin Dickson, daughter of Roy Kabat
(animal furnisher, Escape) will be with us to talk about growing up
at JungleLand and about the work that her father did establishing
the world's first hearing dog program, Dogs for the Deaf. Robin's
dad also furnished animals for Dr. Dolittle, and Robin has
additional information to share with us about that!

Thursday, 7:00pm Eastern: Kass and Theresa, fan fiction writers and
aficionados will be with us to discuss Pota Fanfic. We are looking
forward to welcoming them to the forum.

All of these round table forums are scheduled to take place on the
regular board, but we will consider moving to chat if Yahoo is slow
of if there are problems hosting in this arena. We look forward to
your participation and enthusiastically welcome these guest posters.

You should be aware that refreshments will be served at these
events. Come armed with questions, and you could be a winner!

Respectfully,
