Hi to all of you. I got on a little early as I wasn't sure how long
it would take. No problems so far. I hope you are all well.
I'm going to other messages now--hope this works--so far so good

My first question for Robin is, we are all familar with dogs for the blind but do not often think about dogs for the deaf. Are more hearing impaired individuals using dogs for assistance?<.html <.html

Thanks for the welcome. This is my first time doing a chat room type

(smile). I'm open to any questions about Jungleland or about Dogs

fun to talk a little bit about your experiences with the "big cats"

animals? Can you somehow briefly encapsulate your time at
JungleLand? Is there one (or two) experiences that you found
particularly memorable or impressive as a child?

Is one breed of dog used more than other breeds? I live with my 85 yr old father who is hard of hearing, I notice that my dachshund when he wants his attention barks in front of him so my father can see him. Elaine

Taylor did NOT make a "big stink about losing Stewart"; Landon, who
WAS bothered by her death more than the others, says to Taylor: "You
don't seem very cut-up about it." Oh, sure, Taylor's initial reaction
to seeing her hideous cadaver in the hibernation bunk is one of
shock, but that's it. Afterwards, he reasons that she's been dead
for "nearly a year" and that it's "a little late for a wake". Why
mourn somebody who died nearly a year ago? Taylor doesn't.
As for Nova -- isn't it obvious that Taylor loves her? When Lucius
springs him from the cage guarded by Julius, Taylor stops -- looking
over at Nova, who gazes steadfastly at him -- and says, "Wait! She
comes along, too."
"Zira doesn't WANT your female!" Lucius protests.
And Taylor forcefully says, "I want her!"
Zira: "I told you not to BRING the other one--!"
Lucius: "He wouldn't leave her!"
Later, when Zaius crashes the party at the Cave, he says, "I see
you've brought along the female of your species. I didn't realize
that Man could be monogamous."
"On THIS planet, it's EASY," Taylor responds.
When Taylor broke out of his cage before -- to avoid being prepped
for surgery ("the vet's gonna GELD him") -- he leaves Nova behind in
the cell, cowering and shaking the bars. But, when Lucius helps him
to break out later on, after Taylor had been separated from her by
the gorillas (prior to the tribunal's hearing), Taylor does NOT just
leave her there to rot. He insists on bringing her along.
And then, after Nova is shot to death by the gorilla in the cellblock
area of Mendez' buried city, Taylor loses the only woman who had ever
loved him. Remember how he told her how he had left Earth "because
there was nobody to hold me there..."? He couldn't find love in the
Modern World: "love-making, but no love". His dissatisfaction,
ultimately, led to his willingness to LEAVE the world behind.
But on the planet of the apes, he found a woman who DID love him. He
wonders, though, if she really DOES love him ("Do you love me, I
wonder? CAN you love, I wonder..."). But he did manage to teach her
how to smile... and then, how to distinguish the sounds of his name
("Tay-lor") and her name ("No-va"), when they stop at that watering
hole in "BENEATH". And THIS time, she isn't trying to stop his mouth
from making vocalizations (as she did before, in the cage: "Yeah...
me Tarzan, you Jane..."). She's actually pointing at him and at
herself, in response to his tutorial.
She's MORE than the animal he first found before the Hunt scene.
Interaction with him MADE her more than a mere animal.
And, when the Negro mutant is forcing him and Brent to fight to the
death, she bursts on the scene and becomes the first native surface-
dwelling human being to SPEAK in who knows how many hundreds of
years? She rasps out the name he taught her: "Taylor!"
And, not long after, she's gunned down. When that happens, when her
life is over, he reacts with grief.
"I should let them ALL die! The gorillas, every damn--! Look what it
comes to! It's time it was finished. FINISHED!"
Let them all die from what? From the Doomsday Bomb, of course. Here,
he's seriously contemplating ALLOWING it to destroy "them ALL". He
must believe that not only the gorillas, but the Mutants and the mute
humans on the surface AND the peaceful apes in Ape City -- especially
the ones who SAVED him, Zira and Cornelius -- would all die along
with the rest, when the Bomb goes off. Taylor is so grief-stricken
that he is tempted to let EVERYONE die, as vengeance for the death of
Nova.
One can argue that Taylor -- when he triggers the Bomb -- did so out
of anger at Zaius for spouting off about how "Man is evil... capable
of nothing but destruction!" and all that. Is he still thinking of
Nova, at that point? Who knows? But he certainly doesn't have
anything to live for -- and his life is rapidly approaching its end,
now that Ursus' bullets have riddled his body. Perhaps Taylor sees --
in Zaius' hateful last words -- that neither Man nor Ape will EVER be
able to transcend the cycle of Hate and Violence that have marred
their mutual history... so, by triggering the Bomb, he might feel
he's putting both races out of their misery.
Why NOT trigger the Bomb? The last thing he says, before he leaves
Nova's corpse behind in that cellblock, when Brent reminds
him "Taylor, come ON... the Bomb..." is: "Yeah... why not?"
Why not WHAT? Why not PREVENT Doomsday? Or why not FULFILL Doomsday?
In light of what he ends up doing, it sure seems like the latter. And
he first expressed the inclination to do that when the woman he
loved -- the woman, the ONLY woman, to have ever loved him -- was
senselessly slaughtered.
"I should let them ALL die!"
How can you watch that scene and NOT think that he loved her? If he
didn't really love her, would he seriously consider annihilating ALL
life on Earth, in revenge for her death? Of COURSE not!
I'm reminded of Harlan Ellison's original teleplay of the STAR TREK
episode "The City on the Edge of Forever", where Kirk was willing to
prevent the "good" Future in order to save Edith Keeler from a
cosmically unjust death. As Spock tells him, in consolation: "No
woman was ever loved as much, Jim. Because no woman was ever offered
the universe for love."
Perhaps, in Taylor's own mind, HE loved Nova more than any man ever
loved any other woman... because he was willing to destroy the entire
world in retaliation for her death. Just as Kirk, in Ellison's
original version of that episode, would've essentially "killed" the
Future for Mankind -- allowing the Nazis to win WW2, etc etc, thus
preventing the Federation, Starfleet, all of that.
What Kirk WOULD have done... Taylor DID. If Kirk can, "He will
sacrifice everything for her" Ellison wrote. Taylor DID.

.htmlHi Kasey, Thanks for your interest in Dogs for the Deaf.
If someone is interested in receiving a Hearing Dog, they must go
through an application and screening process. They need to write,
call, or e-mail and request an application. They then fill out the
application and return it to us along with a copy of their audiogram
and a $25.00 application fee. Their application is screened to see
if they have enought hearing loss to need a dog, amongst other
things.
If they meet all the initial criteria, then we do an in-home
interview with them. We have volunteers all across the country who
go to the applicants' homes and interview them, check out the house,
yard and fencing, and then send the report to us so that a final
decision can be made as to whether or not they qualify for a dog.
Those who do qualify, go on our waiting list.
The dogs are trained to respond to a variety of household sounds such
as the smoke alarm, door bell, oven buzzer, a baby cry, telephone,
etc. They are trained to go get the person, make physical contact by
putting a paw on them, and then lead the person to the source of the
sound. Then, the person rewards the dog with a toy or treat.
We usually start the dogs in training any time from 10 months to 3
years.
There are many volunteers all across the country who help with
interviews and also help by telling others about Dogs for the Deaf,
just like this chat room is doing. This is a great way to spread
word about our special work.
Thanks.

.htmlHi Helen,
Living at Jungleland as a child was a great experience. We actually
lived on the premesis from about 1956-1958. I loved it.
One Christmas eve, a lioness had two cubs. She killed one, which was
not uncommon in those days with big cats in captivity, and the
trainer got the other one out. My father brought it to the house and
I hand raised Honey, as I named her. She lived in the house with us
until she was just over a year old. Then she went into training.
My favorite, though, was the elephants. In those days, very little
was done with African elephants. We had one African and the rest
were Indian elephants. I loved working with them and playing with
them. I had my own elephant act with one of the younger elephants
that I performed at Jungleland and on the TV show my dad produced on
KTLA in Los Angeles called Circus. The Ringmaster was Dick Lane of
Rollerderby fame.
I also had a liberty pony act that I enjoyed working with and
performing with. This is where the ponies are loose and run around
the ring and do different tricks depending on what the trainer wants
them to do.
Being the "ham" that I am, I enjoyed working with these animals and
performing with them.
I also sold tickets and worked in the gift shop at Jungleland. It
was excellent training. I learned so much about animals from all the
different trainers at Jungleland. There were all great to me and
very patient. The only trainer I did not like was Mable Stark. At
the time, she was the world's only woman tiger trainer. She worked at
Jungleland many years and I was scared to death of her. She was very
ornery and mean.
One time my dad had an elephant at a fund raiser Easter egg hunt for
some group. I rode on the elephant during the egg hunt, and I could
see all the eggs from my high vantage point!
It was not a normal childhood, but it was a fun one.
If anyone has any specific questions, let me know.

Isn't funny that, having grown up with the exotic animals, you ended

.htmlHi Ashley,
I worked with the trainers and they helped me. I taught the
different animals a lot of the things, with the help of the adult
trainers. They were my mentors.
Remember, this was back in the 50's and animal training methods were
more compulive back then than they are now. We were never mean, and
never hurt the animals, but animal care and training was very
different from what it is now. The exotics lived in cages back then
instead of "habitats" like they do now.
With the liberty pony act, we used lunge lines and lunge whips to
train the animals. With the elephants, we used the traditional
elephant hook, which, when used properly is not inhumane. When you
have something as big as an elephant, you need to have control!
Hope this answers your questions.

.htmlHi Helen,
My dad started Dogs for the Deaf in 1977. At that time, I was in
Wisconsin teaching school. When my parents divorced, my mother and I
moved back to the midwest. I went to high school and college there
and started teaching school. During those years, I also trained and
showed Quarter Horses.
After graduation, I began teaching high school English in 1968.
I visited my dad in 1978 and saw what he was doing with the
beginnings of DFD. In 1980, my husband died suddenly at the age of
35. After a year, I decided that I wanted to do something
different. Public education was getting worse and I was not happy
with the direction it was going. We were turning into professional
babysitters. It seemed like it was time for a major life change. My
father, by that time, was on kidney dialysis and knew his time was
limited. He wanted someone to take over DFD when he was gone. I had
business training and experience, in addition to the animal training
and communication skills and experience, so I packed up my daughter,
who was 6, and we moved to Oregon. I joined him in DFD June, 1981.
He died in 1986, and I took over at that time.
I tell people that I went to the dogs and they don't talk back!!!

No, it wasn't my lion that bit Jan Mansfield's son. That was a
classic case of a parent or other adult not watching a child. It was
not the lions fault, but of course the lion got blamed and,
unfortunately, that lawsuit was the beginning of the end for
Jungleland. It was too bad.
A few years earlier, my father had supplied a pink elephant for one
of Jane's birthday parties in Vegas. They painted this elephant all
pink and brought it into the hotel for her party. I have pictures of
it in my scrapbook.
I also have some Jungleland memorabelia that I am going to be putting
on e-bay one of these days to sell. My kids aren't interested in it,
and it seems like it is time to get rid of it.
One of the interesting things I have is my father's original script
for the Dr. Dolittle movie with Rex Harrison. It has all of his
notes in it and everything.
My father also produced the Chucko the Birthday Clown show in Los
Angeles in the early 60's. I have a few copies of the book written
by Chucko's wife about those years.
Yes, it was a different life (smile).

I have two questions myself.
First...
How did your dad become interested in Dogs for the Deaf? It seems,
again, to be an odd move... from exotic jungle animals to common
house pets... (Not that I would be happy if my family took in a
hearing elephant!) And, hearing dogs to boot. That was a new idea,

You mentioned that your father furnished the animals for Dr.
Dolittle. That's huge! There were a number of animals in that
movie and they weren't just walk on parts. I think you mentioned
that you have memories of this movie. Can you recall something
specific? Your dad working late hours? This must have been a huge
challenge for him!
Also, please talk some more about the Dr. Dolittle memorabilia that
you have. I think some of our members would find it interesting.

always sleeps while I have to work! I keep trying to trade places
with him, but he won't do it!! It is a dog's life (smile).
The elephants ranged from babies to huge, full grown adults. That
was back in the days when they imported exotic animals from India and
Africa. Elephants were seldom born in captivity back then, so we
would buy babies that were shipped in. They were still on a bottle
and very sweet and cute.
Elephants are wonderful, gentle, and very intelligent. They develop
strong bonds with their trainers just like horses and dogs.
The biggest one we had back then was a full grown female named Emma.
I used to ride her all the time.
Did you know that an elephant's skin is actually made of many very
thin layers. It is not tough like most people think it is.
Take care.

Robin
is the daughter of Roy Kabat, the animal furnisher for Escape
from the
Planet of the Apes and Dr. Dolittle, among other films.
Mr. Kabat
worked with American Humane to establish the first hearing
dog
program. Robin now heads Dogs for the Deaf.

.htmlMy dad retired to southern Oregon in 1971. He brought a few animals
with him but thought he was pretty much done with animals.
In 1976 he received a phone call from American Humane Assn. at their
headquarters in DEnver, CO. They had started doing some experimental
work with trying to train Hearing Dogs. They were having some
problems and, because of his work with animals in movies, asked him
if he would help. He flew to Denver and spent two weeks watching
what they were doing and offering suggestions. Then he came back and
started DFD. He was so intrigued with the whole concept and saw the
potential for it that he took an old barn on his ranch and made
kennels on the ground floor and made the hay loft into a training
apartment.
The main thing they were doing wrong at American Humane, was they
were just trying to get the dogs to work in a big, open room. He
said, no, you have to have a mock apartment or house so the dogs get
used to working in a home-like environment. This was what we did
with the movie/tv animals. We knew what kind of a set they would be
working in and made a mock up of that set and trained the animal to
do what it needed to do before getting to the studio. It made
filming time much easier.
That is what we still do today. We have four training apartments
here at Dogs for the Deaf that are fully functional. The trainers do
all of the sound training there so the dogs get used to working in a
home environment. Then, when we place the dog, the transition is
much easier.
I have to go now. I can check the site later and see if there are
any other questions, if that will work???
This has been fun. Thanks for the opportunity.

This is a tune Zira is singing while
she is in the spaceship going back in time to earth.
On The Earth Again (sung to On The
Road Again by Willie Nelson)
I can't wait to get on the Earth
again
Up here with my simian mate
I can't wait to get on the Earth
again
I can't wait to get on the Earth
again
Low gravity's making my uterus droop
Soon I'll be cleaning baby chimp
poop
I can't wait to get on the Earth

He should let humans and apes rule
With a billion light years to go
I can't wait to get on teh Earth

Seriously. And always check the home page. The home pages are
created by the ladies and contain pictures and links of things that
are dear to our hearts. Almost all of the pages were a group
effort, with one woman saying "Ick, too much pink!" and another one
saying "Pink? I LOVE pink!" "Too dark!" "Too bright!" "Ick, too
much pink!" "That clashes!" Etc. Usually someone came up with a
color scheme and someone else added a picture. These gals make a
great team! I wish they would come and decorate my house. "Pink,

give it a try.
For the filming of Dr. Dolittle, most of it was filmed in England so
it involved getting the animals to England, getting exemptions from
their quarantine laws, and a lot of other hoops to jump through.
The thing I remember most from what my dad talked about was that Rex
Harrison did not like animals and was actually afraid of some of
them! This proved to be a real challenge, to say the least.
As I said, I have the original script that my dad used during
training and filming. I have the original 8mm film of my dad and the
other trainers teaching the giraffe to be ridden for the movie. No
one had ever trained a giraffe to be ridden before. The giraffe did
not like it at first!! I also have photographs, posters, and other
such things from the movie.
Sorry I had to leave at 11:30, but I had an appointment in town.
Thanks so much for setting this up. It was fun. I would definitely
do it again if you want to.
Thanks.

.htmlRobin,
If you get a chance to read this, I'd just like to thank you again
for sharing with us. My kids are still talking about the adventures
you must have had. (We're a little stuck on the elephants.)
For those of you who aren't aware of it, this was a "for fun" sort
of forum and our guests have been wonderful about working out the
bugs with us. I'm really grateful to them for their participation.
If you have further questions for Robin, please just put her name in
the subject line so that she can find your posts easily or so that
one of the Marauders can forward them to her for follow up.
Thank you, Robin. This was fun! Let's do it again.

You know what, Patrick? It does seem like we have seen different
movies.
I'm sure that the opinions we have must be a Mars / Venus thing.
But I'll check it out.
In my opinion, Taylor just doesn't come across as being that warm a
guy, and he does seem a bit stuck on himself. It's just too big a
stretch for me, but give me time to check it out based on your
observations.

The story isn't exactly finished... I don't think, anyways. It could be if everyone thinks the ending is okay.
It's a "chick" story? What did I relate? Maybe I should go re-read my story. Thanks for the nice feedback though.

I'm imagining that if you were to suggest "other items" there is
a "chick" or two on the group that would relate it!!
Join us tomorrow night. We can talk about it.

I can't remeber their email address but their site is
www.sideshowtoy.com
There is a Planet of the Apes link and I think in the upper right
hand corner if you click on the pic of the girl offering help, if
you search you can contact them through there on the site. There is
also a 800 number listed on the site as well.
In their original release regarding the Ape figures, they stated
they had the license to do the TV series. So please do email them
or/and call!!! We need a Galen and well as Virdon and Burke and the
other TV Apes!!!
Hope this helps

.html We just got finished watching "Gorillas in the Mist" about Dian
Fossey's work with Mountain Gorillas for National Geographic. It
ends with her murderous death. At the end, she is burried next to
Digit, the huge male silverback that she befriended.
Anyway, before the credits it says: "When Dian Fossey arrived in
Africa, the Mountain Gorilla was doomed to extinction. The result
of her life's work was a significant decrease in poaching and the
survival of the species. The gorilla population continues to
multiply as the spirit of her achievement lives on. Her death
remains a mystery."
Is this true? The gorilla population continues to multiply?
Mountain gorillas? I hadn't heard that anyone had been successful
in curbing the decline of the apes' populations anywhere. Would you
comment on this, and, if it is true, would you suggest why she was
successful and how the formula could be applied in other areas with
other gorilla populations?
Thanks, Sarah. (I'll be glad to hear from any of you who might want
to comment.)

Sorry about that, I was a little late posting our schedule for the
day. You will see it has been posted.
The conference will take place at 4:00pm Pacific time, 7:00pm
Eastern, 12:00Midnight in London, and 11:00am tomorrow in Canberra.
But if you live in Canberra, expect to be there today as the event
will happen tomorrow in the US. I could mail you the chart, but it
would take a few days to get to you and you would be a week late for
last week's show. Here is the link:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/
You'll have to figure out how to cut and paste it to your address
bar, 'cus I'm not good with that.
>
> What time does the show start and is there a dress code?
Since this is an evening conference, I suggest dress casual.
However, if you live in California you may wear your sweats. If you
live in London, pjs are acceptable. In Canberra, just wear
yesterday's clothes.

Their ship was a sort of sphere with an envelopethe sailwhich was
miraculously fine and light and moved through space propelled by the
pressure of light-radiation....His sail was lined inside with a
series of black blinds that he could roll up or unroll at will, thus
changing the effect of the light-pressure by modifying the

Well, I have NO idea where the list ended
up!
I spoke to Sideshow recently about the
POTA line and they gave the standard response “Keep buying we’ll
keep making”.
The big question is: are they doing BENEATH now and ESCAPE
next etc etc – nobody there could answer me.
Maybe somebody IN the us can phone them
and be more patient than me (tick, tick, ching, ching!).

You chose a good time to join us. Welcome!
Galen would be cool. The series five would be great, if they could
do a good likeness of the boys. But... I hope they wait until I
finish paying for the movie characters!!!

.html Hi, Elaine, Helen and Kasey. Glad to be here. I'm glad my pal T
could join me here. "Scattered Remains" was the first long POTA tv
fic I read and I fell in love with it! Promptly wrote Theresa and
probably drove her crazy, too;)
Hello to all at the DG!

.htmlHum, let's see. I wasn't alive yet so I unfortunantely can't say the
same. But on to some questions...
What promted you to start writing PotA fanfiction? Is there any
advice that you would give to those of us who enjoy the art of
writing?
