Well there’s nobody talking about the new cover – I’m amazed!

Seeing it the first time sent shivers down my spine.  But I have always loved that finale of Conquest featuring Caesar’s speech.

As we all know, the version of Conquest we saw was modified from the original they showed to test audiences (because these test audiences thought it was too violent).  The musical score was changed too because it was “too scary”.

I wonder – if the new comic generates enough interest…..maybe that could encourage Fox to dig through the archives and do a release of the original version.  But, hey, who even knows if it still exists?

    Michael

    OK.

I have spoken to the guy who sold him that radio.

His name is Mark and he’s the same guy who has the only known GENUINE lollipop (that has Ploog art I seem to recall).

I’ll find out more and get back to you.

Ty did mention that this comic is going to be CONTROVERTIAL.

Given the primitive gorillas on the cover for issue #1 and the inclusion of primitive apes and a monkey on the cover for issue #2, I am wondering if this means there will be something about primitive apes included.

But then again, the Marvel comic covers had flying monkeys…..so it could just be a cool cover!

I actually like this cover better than a lot of the Marvel covers!

So to be consistent with the movies, should CONQUEST Caesar have feet and shoes the shape of a human and Battle Caesar have ape feet?  J

I've lived through to hurricanes, but they were both very mild. Just a few trees scattered here and there. In both cases, I was visiting another country, once the US and once Mexico.
The toughest I've had to endure was the big ice storm in Quebec about 7 years ago. No power for over a week doesn't sound that bad, but it sure is when it's the middle of the winter and your only source of heat IS electricity. Some had to endure it for 3 weeks so I'm not complaining.

I went through the same thing last year with Hurricane Francis, though luckily I only lost power for a couple days.  Living in the South in summer is not pleasant if you don't have air conditioning, and not having electricity in general sucks.  Life before the modern electrical age must have sucked big time.

I have just uploaded the cover art for issue 2 of the forthcoming comic from Metallic Rose comics:

This proposed cover is a fantastic painting by Dennis Rodier and here is a bit of news from Ty Templeton about how things are progressing:

Sneak previews are starting next week.  Probably more towards the end of the week, rather than the beginning.  We still have yet to letter some of the pages in the first issue.  But we have pages from a couple of issues and a couple of covers now, so we're down to a matter of days, not weeks.

We had to stop production for about a month, because of a personel change in our lead feature penciller, which has been happily fixed.  Our new penciller (Max Douglas, aka Salgood Sam, of Dr. Strange, Wonder Woman, Ghost Rider, etc. fame) is just finishing up issue one, while our OTHER lead penciller (Tom Fowler, of Green Arrow and Star Wars: Bobba Fett fame) is halfway through issue three.

    Ty

    Enjoy folks!

    Neil

The "Conquest" apes are supposed to be primitive. Remember the naked orangs with Caesar? I don't have a problem with "naked" apes (actually, they turn me on). But I don't know about the monkey. Looks kind of silly. I preferred the first cover. - - - Jeff

It will be interesting to see exactly how much of a connection the

Then how is it that when they are going thru processing they magically transform into "POTA" apes? I think that all the apes seen in POTA are supposed to be seen as just generalized apes... I mean it's stupid to believe that a creature that looks like Caesar would not stand out like a sore thumb in the midst of the so called "primitive" ape population. If there was supposed to be that much of a difference there would be no question that he is different. They wouldn't have to do an investigation, he'd stand out as not even being an "ape"...

This is actually the cover for a brand new comic that’s being released in North America very shortly.

It isn’t one that Neil and I have done (ours don’t have a publisher yet) – it is the work of Metallic Rose Comics (headed up by Ty Templeton).

Totally agree Neil, It's funny but this talk about the new comic
has got me pondering why comics seem to play such an important role
in apes fandom, other cult films or tv shows have comic versions
(StarTrek and Star Wars) but they never seem to be as central as the
    ape comics do.
The quality of the Marvel stuff obviously has a lot to do with this
but I think it's not the only reason.I just wonder whether in a pre
Video DVD world the comics were the only form of habitual
entertainment ( weekly, monthly)we could get, ones we could
constantly look over and cherish. This ofcourse builds quite an
attachment and can be contrasted with modern cult shows ,say Buffy,
where you can get the DVDs within months, constant re-runs,lots more
stuff,So there's not an attachment made to just one thing. Does any
the above make sense? What do you all think? Going full circle this
creates high expections for any new comics.
    Best Graham.

    I absolutely agree.

The Marvel comics were the only way for we POTA fans top get a regular fix for a LONG time.

In the modern era, nobody would have done a comic of the movie would they?  But they featured ALL 5!

I still want to know if there are any future issues pencilled/planned but never released.

staring at those comics for that very reason, it was about all the
Apes one could get. Other than that it was the TV show once a week
(and even that was gone before it really got started) or hoping that
one of the local cinemas would reshow one of the movies very, very
occasionally (if you got really lucky!).
I even taped Beneath when it was shown on TV on my little old
cassette recorder and listened to that over and over again, so I
suppose if we had videos back then I would have spent most of that
time watching them instead of re-reading the comics over and over.

I taped the movies at the Drive-In "Go Ape" marathon (we only got 4 movies though).

I also have "fake memories" of the movies because I saw them a couple of times, and read the comics HUNDREDS of times (and as we all know the comics are closer to the shooting scripts than they are to the movies).

It really was a different world, I've just watched some of the Return
cartoons which Dave Ballard was kind enough to send me. I kept
wondering why the orange Urko seemed so odd, then I realised I'd only
ever seen these in black and white.

.html I've always preffered the 'ape' feet with the stick out toe. I noticed them in most of the movies, but did not immediately pick up on the fact when 'normal' feet were used. Mind you that this is not a big deal for me, just a nice touch.

As for the possibility that the story will be controvertial, that would be great. I like my stories a bit spicy, just like my food.

can only be a good thing and I really hope that that attention is

It will be interesting to see exactly how much of a connection the
cover actually has to the story, is it representing what is happening
in it or is it just one of those 'Marvel type' covers that looks great
but really has nothing to do with the story? Personally I think it
seems like it would be the former.
The only worry I have is the little monkey hanging onto Caesar(?)'s

Good luck to your sister, Tim, and the others in the eye of the disaster.
The looting and so forth, it's not all black and white. I heard hotels in
Texas are increasing their rates substantially to take advantage of the
displaced people. And even New Orleans cops were looting DVDs from Walmart.
People like to see others as good or bad (and perhaps judge others before
they've walked in those shoes) but this shows how tenuous society can be (a
common theme of POTA). - - - Jeff

Subject: OT: "Variety" is the spice of life/POTA2001

This weekend I picked up two excellent issues of the entertainment trade paper "Variety". The first is the Sept. 1st issue, which features Army Archerd's last column for them after 52 years, as well as a nice retropective of his career. POTAers might know that he was friends with Arthur Jacobs and did cameos in the "Ape" movies; he was the boxing ref in "Escape" and played some apes. In fact, in his last column, among his memories, he mentions visiting the POTA set and reporting on being made into an ape, as well as when readers "joined me for a tear at eulogies I delivered to Richard Burton and Arthur Jacobs". I guess he will still be writing for "Variety", but not his famous column.
Also, "Variety" picked Fox execs Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos as their "Showmen of the Year" in a huge magazine tribute (92 pages!) that has articles not only on them but on Fox itself and it's many divisions. There's also interviews of Rothman by Richard Zanuck and of Gianopulos by James Cameron. Nothing hard hitting. There's a POTA2001 picture on the Zanuck interview but the film is not mentioned. There's a history of Fox (during the last decade) that mentions POTA2001's record opening. There's also a list of Fox movies in development. No POTA2 but Fox is planning remakes of "Day the Earth Stood Still", "Fantastic Voyage" and "The Omen". They're also not against sequels, with new "Die Hard", "Garfield", "Cheaper By the Dozen", "Big Momma's House" , "Ice Age" and TWO "X-Men" films in  in development.
Fox is getting credit as the top studio of the year so far at the box office, thanks to two movies that aren't theirs, they only get a distribution fee ("Star Wars Episode 3" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith") as well as their own "Fantastic 4" (which is owned by Marvel, thus another franchise Fox is doing for someone else while their own franchise POTA flounders; are these guys financial geniuses or what? I guess as long as they get their salary and it looks good on paper that's all that matters) and "Robots".
There's also a list of Fox's top hits over the last decade. The top 15 are: 1. "Titanic" ($1.9 billion worldwide); 2. "Star Wars Episode 1" ($923 million ww); 3. "Star Wars Episode 3" ( $829 million so far ww); 4. "ID4" ($817 million ww); 5. "Star Wars Episode 2" ($650 million ww); 6. "Day After Tomorrow" ($543 million ww); 7. "Die Another Day" ($432 million ww; I guess they had a connection with this James Bond flick somehow); 8. "Cast Away" ($428 million ww); 9. "X2" ($407 million ww); 10. "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" ($ 384 million ww so far); 11. "Ice Age" ($382 million ww); 12. "True Lies" ($380 million ww); 13. "There's Something About Mary" ($371 million ww); 14. "Die Hard 3" ($361 million ww); and 15. POTA2001 ($ 360 million ww). Meanwhile, in my opinion, Fox continues to turn out crap that take advantage of marketable ideas that have good openings ("Fantastic 4", "Alien vs. Predator", "Day After Tomorrow", "I, Robot") but don't capture the audiences fancy the way other studios do. The last time Fox had the # 1 movie of the year was "Titanic" almost a decade ago. So the idea that these guys are "Showmen of the year" is laughable to me. Maybe they're "Slight of Hand Men of the year" or "Jump on George Lucas' Bandwagon Men of the Year" but "showmen" in terms of putting on a good show? Please. But it's a fascinating mag that provides a great rundown on Fox.
In the August issue of "Cinefantastique", Richard Zanuck says, "With POTA, it seemed we never had a chance to really do what we wanted to do with it. Before Tim (Burton) even signed on, the studio had a July 4 release date and there was no script. We started shooting in November, we finished in March and we had to release it in July. It was just a panic all the way through - - we were writing as we were going along and it wasn't the way to make the picture". I think Burton (and Zanuck) have done an excellent job post- POTA with "Big Fish" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (my favorite summer movie) and so my eye is more on Fox for the POTA fiasco. Burton should have told them the schedule and script were unacceptable (like Oliver Stone and James Cameron did) but probably felt he could make it work and do better with the sequel. Meanwhile Fox continues to wallow in mediocrity. So I can't say I'm much interested in a POTA sequel anymore. Fox will just screw it up again. Let them knock themselves out building up George Lucas' and Marvel's franchises. They don't deserve POTA.  - - - Jeff

Cool comics over the internet,I take it all back, the 21st centary
is a wonderful thing , who needs cassette recorders and black and
white Tvs :) Loved the strips!!
I'm amazed at how you ,neil and Mike, keep this up, such hard work
should be recognised more often than we do !! I'm sure everyone here
appreciates them so take a bow!!(I mean you wouldn't get me doing a
strip, producing that much work ,like pulling teeth, we're talking
bell tower and rifle after a few hours)
I'm still a bit new here so I hope I do this right but I nominate
    Dario next for the strips

appreciates them so take a bow!!(I mean you wouldn't get me doing a
strip, producing that much work ,like pulling teeth, we're talking
bell tower and rifle after a few hours)
I'm still a bit new here so I hope I do this right but I nominate
    Dario next for the strips

    Thanks Mike, Neil,

Sometimes I feel I'm overplaying Fox but I really feel that's the best way
to keep POTA alive. A new movie franchise, it doesn't take a genius to
realize how important that is to renewing interest in POTA. A GOOD movie. We
talk about why people are interested in the comic books. By now I'm pretty
jaded but I remember Adventure's POTA comic in, er, ... 1990? THAT was an
event and even though they weren't perfect they were POTA. Even at their
worst they were an event. I don't remember thinking, "This could lead to a
movie!" Somewhere in there I think Adam Rifkin was mentioned as a possible
director of a new movie. That seemed so incredible back then, but since
then: Oliver Stone, James Cameron, Tim Burton. Three of my favorite
directors. And then the movie turned out to be what it was. There's no
better indictment than that, than to spend a decade listening to the ideas
of Peter Jackson, Oliver Stone, James Cameron and Tim Burton, and that's the
best you can come up with? All those high priced screenwriters (and I've
    read many of their scripts).
That's it. I'm not going to bring this up anymore. After POTA2001 I hoped
Fox could learn their lesson. Tim Burton DID, and if he went to Fox and
said, "Let me do it my way", I would be excited about that. But Fox owns
POTA and their current history does not provide me with hope. And, how the
film franchise goes, so does things like comic books, action figures and
trading cards. This should be a good time for POTA, given the unease in the
world. But Fox isn't that far seeing. - - - Jeff

For those who think Hollywood is blind, they aren't. I went to John
Chambers' wake, where Rick Baker called POTA2001 a "bad movie". I forget the
name of it, but there was a cable TV series that did a special about
POTA2001 (I taped it, it's around here somewhere), in which Rick Baker
almost chokes mentioning they spent a decade doing POTA scripts, and
producer Ralph Winter seems to be sick when he says, "Well, that's the
ending Tim Burton wanted". I don't have any proof but I think the special
was made after POTA2001 was cursed by the public.
For his part, Tim Burton has vowed he will never start a movie that
doesn't have a final script, and he will never do a movie that has a release
date first. These are all a result of his POTA2001 experiences, as are his
wife (Helena Bonham Carter) and child; his producer, Richard Zanuck, and
others. But it's not worth talking about POTA2001 anymore. Fox sucks. - - -

Interesting points Jeff, particularly whether the spin offs need a
film franchise to energize them. How ever I think that some times
you need a period where the franchise lays fallow, just look at how
Paramount has run Star Trek into the ground, possibly doing some real
    damage to its cash cow.

To a certain extent, I agree, Graham. If you look at the top movies of the
last few years, they began not as movies, but as: comic books ("Spiderman")
or novels ("Lord of the rings", "Shrek", "Harry Potter"). If a comic book
were to go beyond the traditional audience and find controversy, whatever,
where newspapers were writing about it (I remember there was a gay comic
book hero who got a lot of press, and also "The Dark Knight Returns" Batman
story led to the Batman movie franchise. But there's a sense that the POTA
movie franchise got chewed and spit out and it would take a lot to change
    that idea. - - - Jeff

Does anyone remember how, right after POTA2001 came out, I keep saying, "There will be no sequel.  There will be no sequel."  And how mad that made Alex (Remember him?).

Well, you didn't have to be a genius then to see how bad a movie it was and that as far as launching a new APES franchise it was an utter disaster.

I think eventually Fox will do a new apes film, but it'll be in 2030 or something... and it'll all be CGI... and we'll all be watching it on some future home video screen while we poop in our depends...

    and it will suck.

Not sure why they were their, but I guess you can only do

        Here's my plan . . .
Fill in that Soup Bowl they've been living in
that's not only below sea level, it's below
lake level.  It they need filler they can use all
the debris that's strewn from there to Alabama.

I haven't been writing much as I am glued to the news
about New Orleans....and although I am so relieved
that the people are out of the squalor of the
Superdome and Convention Center.....they are now
showing other parts of the city and I'm still trying
to find out about my sister's house (she is safe!) so

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of our favorite cartoon, a set of trading cards using images and adapting the stories from the first three episodes can now be viewed on Hunter's site.

For this set I abandoned the design used for the movie and TV sets and came up with something that I think feels like what Topps would have produced had they done the set back in 1975. The design has nods to the original TV series set and the novelizations of the cartoon episodes.

My thanks as always to Neil Foster for his stunning wrapper art and to Kassidy Rae for her editorial assistance and encouragement with the card copy. Thanks also to Hunter for hosting the cards and to mastering the DVDs so I could get decent screen grabs from these episodes.

Hi-res printable files and the raw screen grabs will be available soon.

Each week had guest stars, so there's no telling when a POTA guest will show up. I remember there was an episode where Roddy played the Devil, and faced off against Montalban (don't remember the season). Got the new strips. (Thanks Neil).

Someone mentioned that these will relive the excitment of Beneath and
I wholeheartly agree. Not gonna say what images were used in these,
but they represent some of the classical elements that I at least
associate with Beneath. The violence in image 47 more remeniscient of
Conquest than Beneath, but of course there was plenty of violence in
both movies. For some reason the biggest reaction to violence that I
have when viewing Beneath has always been when 'Ongaro' meets his
maker. I thought that the filming of that scene was very gruesome,
closely followed by Brent's demise. The whole blowing up the planet
thing is really downplayed, compared to those death scenes.

        Thanks for the strips guys!

(Not sure who still needs to see the new strips. Anyone? Anyone?
        Bueller? Anyone?)

        Dario
