They were inspired by his panoramic exercises. I had to re-create some at a higher resolution and then put together some others to fill out the rest of the set. One puzzle is not a panoramic, it's small enough
that it just needed a single frame grab.
Glad you like them. Does this mean I can get the next Within strips now?

Neil, love the artwork as usual!
Are the puzzles from Neils panoramic exercises?

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of our favorite cartoon, a set of trading cards using images and adapting the stories from the first three episodes can now be viewed on Hunter's
site.
For this set I abandoned the design used for the movie and TV sets and came up with something that I think feels like what Topps would have produced had they done the set back in 1975. The
design has nods to the original TV series set and the novelizations of the cartoon episodes.
My thanks as always to Neil Foster for his stunning wrapper art and to Kassidy Rae for her editorial assistance and encouragement with the card copy. Thanks also to Hunter for hosting the
cards and to mastering the DVDs so I could get decent screen grabs from these episodes.
Hi-res printable files and the raw screen grabs will be available soon.

These are really nice Greg, the wrapper by Neil is stunning. If
these had come out in '75 I'd have known Urko was orange :) (only
saw the show in black and white as a kid.)

Graham:
I also only saw the original broadcasts of the show in black and white. Finally saw the episodes in color around 1990 or so.
That is a really nice piece of art by Neil. It's the first wrapper art he colored himself, too. Previously he'd left it to me to add color, although I always made sure he was happy with the results before
the sets got posted. He did two color versions, actually. The one you see on the finished wrapper and a simpler version without the shading.

As usual hats of
to Greg for another fantastic set of cards and Kass for her help on the project.
My own contribution was smaller than usual but as always a lot of fun and a
pleasure to do.

-- Hey you're lucky that you got to see the cartoons when they came
out, even if it was in black & white. I lived in Bury and our local
station (Granada) didn't bother showing them at all though the station
over in Wales did. The only problem was that you could only pick up
the signal when the wind was blowing in the exact right direction and
I was perched on top of the sideboard on one leg with a metal coat
hanger held high in the air. And then you were lucky to get a very,
very grainy picture and you really couldn't tell what was what! You
could hear it okay though so I got to hear it and had to imagine what
it looked like and what was going on. Those Underdweller eye beams
really had me wondering what the heck was going on and I only found
out when the novels came out!

a higher resolution and then put together some others to fill out the rest of
the set. One puzzle is not a panoramic, it's small enough that it just needed
a single frame grab.
Glad you like them. Does this mean I can get the next Within strips
now?

available
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of
our favorite cartoon, a set of trading cards using images and adapting the
stories from the first three episodes can now be viewed on Hunter's
site.
For this set I abandoned the design
used for the movie and TV sets and came up with something that I think feels
like what Topps would have produced had they done the set back in 1975. The
design has nods to the original TV series set and the novelizations of the
cartoon episodes.
My thanks as always to Neil Foster for
his stunning wrapper art and to Kassidy Rae for her editorial assistance and
encouragement with the card copy. Thanks also to Hunter for hosting the
cards and to mastering the DVDs so I could get decent screen grabs from
these episodes.
Hi-res printable files and the raw
screen grabs will be available soon.

Wow that's really funny I originally come from Manchester (moston,
about 5 miles out )so Granada was my local station, I could have
sworn
I saw these in '75, could just be my memory playing tricks!! (It's
because I'm 40 you know :) )Bury, I used to love trips to Bury market
to buy comic although my mother would insist on buying black
puddings, apparently they were better there than anywhere else.
oh, once again Neil the Return wrappers fab!!

Ah Bury market, that is where I picked up most of the back issues of
the early weekly POTA comics that I had originally missed out on,
from a really great second hand book stall!
Graham your mum was 100 percent correct, the Bury black puddings

Come on you
lot, get discussing.
This is one
of the most important events in current POTA history - let's really try to be
helpful!
Michael
Okay everyone
should check out these new pages and comment on them. All comments will be
forwarded to Ty Templeton as he really would like to know how we (the fans)
feel about the new comic. Here is what he said in his email to
Michael:
"You may post
these pages on your discussion group. On the condition you pass along
any comments to me, good or bad. I want this to be the Planet of the
Apes comics FOR the fans (and BY the fans, since Joe, Max and myself are all
huge POTA fans).
We want to know what we're doing wrong and
right.
Ty"
So
folks lets let Ty know!

I like Sam's pencils. His artwork is dynamic, without going too far. His colourist seems to be shading a bit too much under the apes' noses, so that their faces look too flat when seen from the front, but
that's minor. I could learn to like their work.
I don't like "Gab's" depiction of apes. His apes' hands seem to be hairless, and their faces are flat. They're also so thin that they look more like spider monkeys than great apes. I
would be distracted from the story by this artwork.
I can't say I like "Tom's" ape faces, either. They're just way too extreme. On Sep 6, 2005, at 7:24 p.m., Neil T Foster wrote:

Oh. Okay. I'll just sit right here and wait while you consult with Neil. Yup, just sit right here and ignore that message I just got before this one with the attachment from Neil, which I'm sure is nothing
special at all.
Heck, I can't stand it. I just have to look.
Excellent! I agree that these two strips strongly evoke Beneath. The locations where each is set is picture-perfect, and the likeness to the actor who played the character at the end of strip 48 is just amazing.
These two strips also continue the 'barreling ahead' feeling that the strip has had for the last few strips.
Can't wait to see what happens next.

Well, these all look good to me. They are closer to the classic apes style than the original poster/cover would have led us to believe, but it also looks like the artists are allowed to give the characters more
ape-like qualities than the make-up and costuming budget allowed 30 years ago. A nice compromise, I think.
It's also nice to finally have a firm date for the release of the first issue. December 7th is the day after my wife's birthday, so it will be easy for me to remember.

I got that book everyone was talking about.
I was able to pick up a disused library copy
for half price. It has an amazing picture from
It's about a guy who dresses as a chimp to
make a living as a circus freak, the talking
monkey, and gets sold to a beautiful heiress,
who's jealous suitor replaces a real chimp
for the fake one. There are some interesting
parallels with Escape. The stuntman who plays
the "real" chimp looks less real then the fake one.
And they have a real chimp playing the gorilla.
Looks a lot like Baker's make ups, but without
the benefit of foam rubber here. Interestingly
enough, The Monkey Talks was a silent picture.
So all his talking was done through title cards.
Anyway here's a pic of the page from the book.

New Issue! New Story! With the end of the world behind us now that the Beneath adaptation is complete, it's time for a change of pace before we embark on the next movie adaptation. Starting this issue is City of
Nomads, featuring the art of Titantic Tom Sutton for 8 amazing pages. The letter column returns this week, and there's a nice pin-up of Urko for TV series fans.

How about "Hey, Hey, We're the Monkeys" by ... "The Monkeys".
Any other potential DG official songs? If we get enough we can run a

magazine [which I love]and showed some great detail which, to me,
seemed to get "covered" by the colorization. If there were a choice,
I'd have to go with the b/w rendition, but either way, it great to see

|
.html Hi all,
This post may be a bit of a ramble but bear with me I will get
to a point !! Over the last week or so a few topics,in particular
the
general enthusiasm for the Metallic Rose comics and Jeff's point that
POTA may need a film franchise to prevent it dying on the vine, got me
wondering whether a remake or updating of POTA could ever be
successful,(in the eyes of the fans not Fox).If POTA divorced from
its
'70s cultural reference points simply loses its resonance and becomes
a film about humans chased by gorillas,(POTA2001 anyone?)
I'm sure I'm not the first to point out that apes can be seen
as
as a proto or pre blockbuster. It shares many characteristics with
modern blockbusters but also considerable differences, one similarity
is the spin offs, stuff to buy, while a difference is apes as a
cultural phenomenon took time to grow, a number of years unlike the
modern mass media lauches of the last decade or so.
The 21st century blockbuster is an animal I have little time
for, I'm thinking of things like Independance Day, opens big, lots of
merchandise. One significant difference POTA has over most modern
blockbusters is that it had content, there's gorillas chasing humans
on
screen but that's not what it's about.I see POTA as very much a
product of the '70s, the all pervading fear of the bomb very much of
its time.We all may have seen the films when we were young but I'm
sure most of us didn't miss this message even then.Cultural fear of
where the cold war was leading played out in melodrama. Now does all
this mean remakes are destined to fail creatively? Does a new movie,
in trying to remain faithful to the spirit of the original, replace a
late 20th century bogey man with a 21st century one, Nuclear war
replaced with say genetics forinstance? If any movie did this would
we
lose so much of what we know of as POTA that it becomes a different
beast,("In order to save the village we had to destroy it") Is it
possible that the dichotomy at the centre of POTA is that any remake
would do this? That the original speaks so much of its cultural times
that it's almost remake proof?
Over to you lot I'm off for a lie down :)
Best wishes Graham. <.html

Graham,
GREAT post – sorta
makes running the groups all worthwhile!
This is the bonus for me – seeing fans formulating hypothesis and
conclusions.
I will answer as I can – gotta get to work!
Then I’ll be up all night watching the Aussies get 2/405!
Maybe that will be while I am asleep…..

in time.
Hi all,
This post may be a
bit of a ramble but bear with me I will get
to a point !! Over the last week or so a few
topics,in particular
the
general enthusiasm for the Metallic Rose comics
and Jeff's point that
POTA may need a film franchise to prevent it dying
on the vine,got me
wondering whether a remake or updating of POTA
could ever be
successful,(in the eyes of the fans not Fox).If
POTA divorced from
its
'70s cultural reference points simply loses its
resonance and becomes
a film about humans chased by gorillas,(POTA2001
anyone?)
I'm sure I'm not
the first to point out that apes can be seen
as
as a proto or pre blockbuster. It shares many
characteristics with
modern blockbusters but also considerable
differences, one similarity
is the spin offs, stuff to buy, while a difference
is apes as a
cultural phenomenon took time to grow, a number of
years unlike the
modern mass media lauches of the last decade or
so.
The 21st century
blockbuster is an animal I have little time
for, I'm thinking of things like Independance Day,
opens big, lots of
merchandise.One significant difference POTA has
over most modern
blockbusters is that it had content, there's
gorillas chasing humans
on
screen but that's not what it's about.I see POTA
as very much a
product of the '70s, the all pervading fear of the
bomb very much of
its time.We all may have seen the films when we
were young but I'm
sure most of us didn't miss this message even
then.Cultural fear of
where the cold war was leading played out in
melodrama.Now does all
this mean remakes are destined to fail creatively?
Does a new movie,
in trying to remain faithful to the spirit of the
original, replace a
late 20th century bogey man with a 21st century
one, Nuclear war
replaced with say genetics forinstance? If any
movie did this would
we
lose so much of what we know of as POTA that it
becomes a different
beast,("In order to save the village we had
to destroy it") Is it
possible that the dichotomy at the centre of POTA
is that any remake
would do this? That the original speaks so much of
its cultural times
that it's almost remake proof?
Over to you lot I'm off for a lie down
:)
Best wishes Graham.

Hey everyone,
Ty
has asked that we stop calling his comic company “Metallic
Rose” (an old name) and instead call it MR COMICS (new name).
Cheers

-- Fair enough. And it's probably about time I commented on the pages
I uploaded I suppose.
I'm not sure which is done by which artist but I really, really like
the pencilled page featuring Caesar(?) in a rage (bw tom2), awesome
art, I particularly like the way he has a more 'ape like' stance but
also is not completely 'primitive'.
The rest of the pages (colour sam 1, 3 & 5) am not too taken with.
Don't get me wrong, they are okay and definitely much better than the
rubbish we got from the Adventure comics but from a personal taste
point of view it is not the sort of 'style' I like very much. I think
the B&W / colour comparison page shows how much the colour really
helps and improves the art in my opinion.
Little things like the size of the hips on the female chimp really
bother me for some reason as do some of the apes faces.
Finally the B&W page featuring Zaius(?) etc (bw gab5). I really do not
like at all. All the figures have a really serious weight issue! They
are all much too skinny and just look wrong. This is by far the worst
of the art we have seen so far and I only hope the colour can in some
way improve it.
The painted covers we have seen so far are fantastic.

Didn't mind this page as much after I'd looked a few times ,I took
the skinny look as a stylistic quirk more than any thing but what I
was pleased with is that they do seem to work sequentially (I think
I may have spelt that wrong.)My memories of the Dark Horse comics
was some of them simply didn't.
Best Graham. <.html

POTA2001?!!! Try POTA the TV show. By that time the franchise had degenerated to almost entirely to juvenilia.
I would say less '70s cultural references and more '50s and '60s.

Thank you for sending the next installment to me! Forgive my
question, because my memory is not real clear on these comics, but remind me
again why the apes are beating up on each other in this strip? I commend
the art work in these strips too. I think it's much better than the comic
that y'all have been discussing that is about to be released in the
stores.

It was a double POTA reference night on Adult Swim tonight.
On Family Guy Peter told his "How many Dirty Stinkin' Apes
does it take to screw in a light bulb?" joke.
And on Futurama it was this one . . .
Cathedral with the Alpha Omega next to a pipe organ.
Fry: Wow! You guys worship an unexploded nuclear bomb?
Female Mutant: Yeah, but nobody's that observant.
It's mainly a Christmas and Easter thing.
