Yes sir. My right arm is already sleeved out with monsters from the
Muppet Show and Sesame Street. My left arm is only done from the
elbow up. Lots of room for my Apes idea.

We’d love to Mike, but it would not sell many copies.

That’s why we did the readings with illustrations.

The whole idea of these comics is to get Neil published and one day have him paid to draw POTA comics.  Wouldn’t that be nice – for all of us and for him?  J

Then when he’s rich and famous maybe he’ll do Monkey Planet….

Michael

Why don't you and Foster plan on doing it as a graphic novel... You write the script from the novel, and let Neil draw it...

How about a T-Shirt?  You know . . .
For those of us who aren't keen to have
ink injected under our skin . . .
not that there's anything wrong with that.

Man, if I thought Neil would have the time I would totally be into
having Neil draw up some Planet of the Apes tattoos for me. I just
figured he's gotten to be a big star now and wouldn't have time for
us little people anymore. ;) I haven't got a new tattoo in over 5
years. For me, that's an insane amount of time between work. I've
been busy being Dad. Which is actually alot more fun than getting
tattoo's, but I'm ready. It's so time to unleash an Apes tattoo.

Here's my idea for the shirt . . .

There was a POTA Stamp
from Republique Centrafricaine
I bought, I'm sure some of you
have them . . . Anyway, it has
the main characters, Taylor,
Zira, Zaius & Nova . . . a couple
of gorillas on horses, The Icarus,
the Statue Of Liberty etc . . .
How about something like that?
You wouldn't even have to silk
screen them.  I've made T-shirt
transfers from image files before.
Everyone else can do the same.

Yeah, that stamp is cool... Very nicely done... It would make a decent t-shirt...

Its a disturbing twist on the Planet of the Apes first family. Neil
may not wish to be a part of it, but I'm open to any ideas he may
have. If he were interested in being part of scarring me for life.

Yes!  He co-starred with Kim in it.
Now here's the real stretch!  The
other guy in that film was, of course,
Marlon Brando, who also starred in
        The Godfather, which was directed
by Coppela, who was one of the
writers on Patton.  Take that Bacon!

          .html
When comics were mostly distributed on newstands the cover dates were further out to keep the comics on the stands longer. A few years ago the publishers realized that trick wasn't working so well in the comic shops and adjusted their cover dates to be closer to reality.

The last I heard the comic was still due in shops on 12/7. Some independent publishers are notorious for shipping late, but given how much of the comic we've already seen on-line I'm guessing they've had the first issue 'in the can' for a while now and Mr Comics won't have a problem hitting their expected release date for the first issue. Diamond Comic Distributing posts the list of what's shipping to shops each week as well as what they expect to ship the following week. You can check those lists here:

As for the MR comics, has anyone gotten the 'real' date as to when
they may be popping up on store shelves. The comics industry is
notorious for putting comics out a lot earlier than the date on the
cover. (Goes back to the old days. A date further out into the future
meant that a comic stayed longer on the shelves before being culled.)
Since they list a December 7th 'official date', then shouldn't they
appear on the shelves way before that? I'm going to check this weekend.

You can check those lists here:

done in French? After all, the apes on Soror have their own language
and do not speak French... Ulysse learns their language, they (except
for Zira) do not learn his...

*** Hmmm... Lemme put it this way: David Lean's film version of "BRIDGE
ON THE RIVER KWAI" was done in English, which makes complete sense
since the main characters ("Col. Nicholson", etc) are English-speaking
Englishmen. So, despite the fact that the source novel was written in
French, the British prisoners of war in Indochina wouldn't really have
spoken French. Thus, it would make more sense for Alec Guinness (etc)
to speak on-screen English, rather than French.

But "LA PLANETE DES SINGES" is about three FRENCH men from the Future.
They aren't just from anywhere on Earth -- they're from France. Their
names are French, they leave Earth from a spaceport at what is now
currently only an AIRport on the outskirts of Paris (Orly). They're
French. ["I wave my private parts at your aunties, you empty-headed
animal food-trough wiper!" -- Oops! That's not French... it's English
              in an outrageous French accent!]

How about this as a 'compromise': have the French men speaking French,
but then when Merou is in conversation in the Ape-language with Zira,
Cornelius, Helius (etc), use ENGLISH as the Ape-language?

The 1968 film refashioned the plot so that the astronauts weren't 26th
Century Frenchmen, but 20th Century Americans -- on behalf of the U.S.
government -- thus, Taylor is a 'colonel' but Antelle was merely
              a 'professeur'.

I'd like to see a faithful-to-Boulle film version. Frankly, it wouldn't
bother me in the slightest if such a film were to be made by a French
film studio, directed by a French director, with an all-French cast,
and speaking dialogue VERBATIM from the novel -- i.e. in French. They'd
be making a film adaptation of a fellow French author's novel, so they
might take a certain pride in the project. I'm not a connoisseur of
French film by any means, but the ones I have seen are rather well
done, so I think it's more likely that a project done by them would be
truer to Boulle than an American film would be. Just look at Burton's
fiasco -- the 'creative' decisions made for that project had nothing to
do with being true to Boulle (or even to the POTA legacy it was 're-
imagining'); it was a crass attempt to cash in on a beloved Fox
              property.

I don't know why you have a problem with the notion of a French-
              language version of Boulle's novel-to-screen. I don't. I've got two
versions of the anime classic "AKIRA" [based, of course, on a Japanese
manga] -- the English-dubbed version and the Japanese-language
original... and the latter is by far the better of the two. I'd rather
read English subtitles and hear the film's real voice, than hear the at-
times over-wraught English-speaking voices dubbing over the Japanese
dialogue. Similarly, it wouldn't bother me at all to hear actors
speaking dialogue in a "PLANETE" film in French, with English subtitles
along the bottom. I think the novel's actual dialogue would come across
more plausibly if done in French -- especially that line "O singes!"/"O
              apes!".

Jeez, it worked for Mel Gibson's "THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST" -- and
that was in the 'dead' languages of Aramaic and Latin!

Why might YOU be hung up on NOT having a film version of Boulle's novel
done in French? Do you generally dislike French-language films? hate
reading English subtitles? Why NOT a film that uses the novel's actual
dialogue (in French), even when we're meant to understand that
              we're 'hearing' the Apes' language?

On a side note, have you (or anybody here) seen Zanuck the Elder's
magnificent film about D-Day called "THE LONGEST DAY"? The film was
unique in having its cast be actors from the actual countries involved
(i.e. British actors played the British forces, French actors played
French men/women in the Resistance, American actors (like John Wayne
and Robert Mitchum) played American soldiers, and German actors
portrayed German soldiers/officers, etc etc... and each actor spoke
dialogue in their respective languages! The Germans all spoke German,
the French spoke French, the British and Americans (and the Canadians,
too, I haven't forgotten 'em!) spoke English.

I shouldn't say this was 'unique', I guess, since in "PATTON" the
Germans (i.e. Rommel, etc) also spoke German, rather than German-
accented English. But "THE LONGEST DAY" was made before "PATTON", so at
              the time it WAS unique.

I think this use of the original languages was the right choice, it
added to the verisimilitude. As a result, it had less of a 'feel' of a
Hollywood war-movie than of an almost 'documentary'-style to it.

Come to think of it, wouldn't it be a hoot to see a newer film version
of the French adult comic "BARBARELLA", with an all-French cast
speaking French, etc.? It's been years since I saw the Jane Fonda film,
but it sure seemed cheesy at the time. Cheesier than the "FLASH GORDON"
film -- and that's saying something. I don't know about you, but I
think when French chicks speak French, they're just immensely sexier
than Jane Fonda was, portraying the originally French-speaking
              character in godawful English dialogue.

*** I like the Ferrer version, too. But it does come across as, well,
rather 'stagey', if you know what I mean. You're right about the
fencing, I'll admit. Then again, the original play doesn't dramatize
the entire fight against 100 men -- it is alluded to later on. The
Depardieu film version is truer to the play in this regard, and in
              many other ways.

My one big complaint about the Depardieu version is this: When Cyrano
fights the duel while composing the ballad, he makes it plain that if
he were to be insulted about his nose, he would kill his opponent. As
the Ferrer version has it, "You shall die exquisitely!"... and Cyrano
proceeds to compose his ballad as they fight, magnificently skewering
the would-be insulter on the last line: "... thus, as I end the
              refrain, THRUST HOME!"

In Depardieu's version -- diverging from the play's stage directions,
inappropriately, I think -- Cyrano does NOT kill him on the last
line; rather, he ends the duel having bested him YET NOT KILLED
HIM... and, only when his back is turned and the jerk tries to stab
him from behind does he THEN kill him in self-defense.

That was a cop-out. It's not how the text of the play has it. It
wasn't true to the character of Cyrano, either. 300 years ago, it was
not considered 'wrong' for a man of his word to kill an opponent in a
duel, especially if the opponent had insulted his honor and -- by the
standards of the time -- deserved what he got. The Depardieu version
tried to make Cyrano more palatable to modern sensibilities, altering
Rostand's original in this one way in order to make us not dislike
Cyrano for killing his opponent. In a way, it's an example
of 'political correctness' intruding on Art. It sort of bastardized
the ambience of the original play. Not throughout the entire film,
mind you, but in this one pivotal scene.

That one 'mistake' aside, though, I prefer the Depardieu film
version. They could've done a better job with the fencing, sure. But
the whole play revolves around the notion of Cyrano's eloquence --
his ability to win the heart of a woman whom he believes would laugh
at him to his face if he were to attempt it himself... but not if
through a surrogate wooer (Christian de Neuvillette).

Cyrano's eloquence is particularly striking in the original French
verse that Rostand wrote. Not even the best of the English
translations really does justice to it. Burgess' version is better
than most (far better, for example, than the prose translation by
Lowell Bair -- at least, more eloquent and poetical). As great as the
Ferrer version is, because it is a translation, it loses a great deal
that the Depardieu version is able to maintain, simply due to the
fact that it is in the original French -- in rhyming couplets, to
              boot.

Certain lines of dialogue pack more of a punch in the original due to
this rhyme: when Cyrano announces his ballad, he calls it something
like "The Duel between Cyrano De Bergerac and a Barbarian"... and his
opponent says, "What do you mean by that?" to which he answers "Oh,
              the title."

The line is funnier in the original, since the word for "Barbarian"
is "bellitre" (related to the Latin word "bellum", which
means "war")... and it is the last word in the 1st line of the
rhyming couplet. The 2nd line of the couplet ends with Cyrano
saying "C'est le titre!" Ideally, there'd be an English word rhyming
with the word "title" that means "barbarian" or "brawler" (etc), but
alas, there isn't one. My own translation of that couplet has the
term "barbarous cur" rhyming with " 'Tis the title, sir!" Closer to
the rhyming original, but still not as spot-on as I'd like it to be.
But, as Dante said, "traduttore e traditore": "the Translator is a
Traitor"... you always lose something when you translate (especially
poetry) from the original language to another.

None of this is about POTA, though, so I'll just throw this in, even
though I've mentioned it before: in Boulle's novel, Arthur Levain is
referred to as "un jeune physicien" which Xan Fielding MISTRANSLATES
              as "a young physician"...

The French word "physicien" does NOT mean "physician" (i.e. doctor of
medicine or surgeon) -- it means "physicist". Like Einstein and
Hawking. For how many years have POTA fans read Boulle's novel and
mistakenly assumed that Arthur Levain was a surgeon or medic, and NOT
the physicist that Boulle actually had Antelle describe him as?

As far as I know, I'm the only one who's ever discovered this flaw in
Xan Fielding's translation. Evidently, no French-speaking fan of
Boulle's novel was aware of this flaw in the English translation.
Shouldn't there be bilingual proof-readers, to catch mistakes such as
this before a book goes to print? Did Boulle proof-read Fielding's
translation? Boulle wrote "PLANET OF THE MEN" in English, didn't he?
Or did he write it in French and then have it translated into English
before submitting it to Fox...? I wonder...

*** I like the Ferrer version, too. But it does come across as, well,
rather 'stagey', if you know what I mean. You're right about the
fencing, I'll admit. Then again, the original play doesn't dramatize
the entire fight against 100 men -- it is alluded to later on. The
Depardieu film version is truer to the play in this regard
Well, then the play sucks.  Anyway, even though it's "stagey",
it's still a movie.  And movies need action.  That's not the time
to fade.  Maybe Depardieu just can't fence!  And that's why they
faded.  One great thing about the old Hollywood System is when
they had to fence, they goat a fencing master and taught them
how to fence.  None of that 3 Musketeers, Pirates of the Caribbean
crap.  There were some actors who actually fence, and fence well.
Flynn, Rathbone, Powers, Granger and both Ferrer's.  I still like
Ferrer's Cyrano the best.  Interestingly, Though Jose' Ferrer is the
father of Miguel Ferrer, and the Uncle of George Clooney, Mel Ferrer
is no relation to him whatsoever.  I had thought they were brothers.

Ferrer version is, because it is a translation, it loses a great deal
that the Depardieu version is able to maintain, simply due to the
fact that it is in the original French

True.  Often things are lost in the translation.
This is especially true in translations in anime.
The Japanese, like the English are big on puns.
And the translations lose a lot of the humor in
them.  There are lots of cultural references as
well that are lost too.  Interestingly some of the
Fan-Subs are better than the commercial release.
But only when the translator has a good command
of English, and can balance literal meaning with
the intent of the words.  A good fan-sub had lots
of editors notes that explain not only what is being
said, but what is meant by it, and it's bearing on
the story.  They say if you have to explain a joke,
then it's not funny.  on the other hand, there's no
point in translating a joke if no one is going to get it.

Wow. I've been away since Sunday morning and checked my e-mail quickly this morning before leaving the house. I found that Neil had posted strips 54 and 55, which fit nicely with the earlier two strips, essentially giving us a full page of art in panel format. The two new panels don't work quite as well in a storytelling sense as the previous two panels, where we got the big explosion in the far distance and the tail-end of the smaller, closer explosions in the second panel, showing how the explosions overlapped. The third panel shows us the recation of the gorillas at the site, but the fourth and final panel doesn't do anything to advance the story, as it just pans down to show us the rest of the two gorillas. Still, it fills out the whole page of strips nicely, giving us a whole page of Foster art. What a nice birthday surprise! Not wanting to be late for my train I resolved to post feedback as soon as I got to work.

It's a few hours later and I see that we have an additional 4 strips added to our birthday surprise. As great as the previous 4 strips were, these are even better. Aside from really advancing the story, I just love the little details Neil has added, from the markings on the crate in strip 57, the plume of smoke from the dig site explosions in strip 58, the rips in the dead mutant's mask in strip 59 and the prominence of that essential hatch that Milo's going to need to repair Taylor's ship once he finds that.

                Very cool.

Neil, don't worry. From what most of the vendors say, they almost
expect comics to be delayed these days especially when they are new
and from smaller publishers. I can wait. I'd rather wait a while
longer than get a flawed rush job.

Funny. As an artist who is constantly under the gun from that Whitty
fella, I thought that you of all people could understand a comic being
a bit late. Think of it this way: I the MR comics are late you can
always use the same excuse when Michael prods you.

Well Kevin it’s not QUITE that straight forward……I mean how does Milo learn to FLY the ship?  Why do they say in ESCAPE that it’s TAYLOR ’S ship when it quite obviously is NOT?

Anyway, what I’m going to TRY to do is provide some subtle alternatives without necessarily saying “well this happened”.

I still believe we need to put it all together ourselves, but introducing a find like this would go a long way to explaining a lot.

-- I can't really take the credit for that one. It's a panel of Herb
Trimpe art from one of the old Marvel POTA mags.

Still, it fills out the whole page of strips nicely, giving us a
                whole page of Foster art.

-- I know it was a bit of a cop out panel that one. It just happened
that way as I was doing a full page thingy.

strips added to our birthday surprise. As great as the previous 4
strips were, these are even better. Aside from really advancing the
story, I just love the little details Neil has added, from the
markings on the crate in strip 57, the plume of smoke from the dig
site explosions in strip 58, the rips in the dead mutant's mask in
strip 59 and the prominence of that essential hatch that Milo's
going to need to repair Taylor's ship once he finds that.

-- Thanks Greg. I wouldn't read too much into those spaceships
though, there are more little twists coming, believe me. ;-)
