I read it,
but at the time there was NOTHING POTA and as crap as it was - it was
SOMETHING.
So there was
still some excitement about getting something regularly and I supported it
hoping that it would improve anyway.
There were
some highlights - Blood of the Apes and Urchack - and for a moment there (when
they started re-printing TERROR) I thought maybe they would do the entire story
and MAYBE they would uncover some stuff that never made it to print or even
commission Ploog to finish the story.

If
Adventure had done a comic I would have, more than likely, bought it even
with their track record. ( never really a fan.I still can't bring my self
to read Ape Nation. ) Best Graham. <.html

3979... (The RETURN creature couldn't have died and became part of a museum piece before it existed in the cartoon...)

Sorry I've been away for so long.
I received my copy of the tv show cd a few days ago and sat down --
quietly playing it in the dark.
It's ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!
Apart from being so familiar with each cue after 30 years (as soon
as you hear the first bar you see the image) -- it was fabulous to
hear the music so crisply -- and devoid of dialogue and fx.
I could bang on for ages about how wonderful it is but I wanted to
ask everyone TWO things:
- end of Earle Hagen's score for THE LEGACY. Remember when Kraik
leads Virdon and Arn thru the drains and back to the computer room
where Burke and Galen are waiting? MY FAVOURITE SHOT IN THE ENTIRE
SERIES is a tracking shot of their legs running -- and I remember
the score at that point -- but on the cd ..... no. Missing.
Perhaps the Fox Music editors got there before me.
Also -- and I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted here -- but if
you continue playing after "End Title" you get the original elements
of the "call to games" horn from THE GLADIATORS. "Arrrrrrruhhh!"
Absolutely bloody wonderful.
Schifrin is now doing for the score for MI:3, so I'm told. I love
his stuff almost as much as I love Goldsmith and Rosenman.
Much Love from London...
Mark. <.html

Wanted! More covers that actually reflect the interior stories. While the cover of this week's issue is more faithful than last week's Conquest-flavored cover, it still doesn't accurately reflect the
adaptation chapter of Escape From the Planet of the Apes that's contained in this issue. I'm guessing, however, that a cover image of Zira enjoying grape-juice plus would not have been a big seller and
might have raised some hackles among parents.
Photo fans will find a full-page image of Zira in this issue, dropped into the middle of the adaptation chapter. There's also a montage of Roddy McDowall photos on the last page that promotes a feature in next
week's issue (despite the fact that the copy on the page says it's in this week's issue). Letter column fans also have reason to rejoice this week.

I was away for a week and it almost took me that long to catch up on
all the postings.
As for the MR comics, has anyone gotten the 'real' date as to when
they may be popping up on store shelves. The comics industry is
notorious for putting comics out a lot earlier than the date on the
cover. (Goes back to the old days. A date further out into the future
meant that a comic stayed longer on the shelves before being culled.)
Since they list a December 7th 'official date', then shouldn't they
appear on the shelves way before that? I'm going to check this weekend.
I liked that Russian POTA cover. Did I miss it, or has nobody
mentioned the naked girl? What's up with that?

*** You're welcome.
One other thing, though: after the Mutants (presumably) ask him who
he is, he gives them his name -- "Brent" [in the screenplay and the
novelization, he gives his full name as "John Christopher Brent" if
I'm not mistaken]. Then, he asks them: "Who are you?"
MEEP
"Oh, I see... the only reality in the Universe... well, that's nice
to know..."
We know from their own insane view of things, that their Bomb God
supposedly created Heaven under Earth, and that the Holy Fallout
descended upon them all -- Mendez, during their Mass, prays, "May the
blessings of the Holy Fallout descend on us all this day..." etc etc.
They seem to have next to no knowledge of the Time before the Nuke
War / Fallout / Underground-living / etc. began. When they reveal
their ability to vocalize, Caspay tells Brent that it is "a primitive
accomplishment" that they use when they must... when they Pray and
Sing to their God, etc.
They view not only the Apes as their enemies, but other Talking
Humans -- those who cannot telepathically share in their mad
religion. They consider humans like Nova probably less of an enemy
than the intelligent Apes and those rare talking humans like Brent
and Taylor, but it's clear that they don't particularly care about
them, since they're not hesitant to force Brent to try to murder
Nova. They get their enemies to kill each other.
I wonder how things would've gone if they'd have forced Nova to try
to kill Brent, instead? Wait till he's asleep and then bash his head
in with a chunk of concrete rubble from the New York Stock Exchange,
or something like that. When they put Brent in with Taylor, the Negro
controls BOTH of them, forcing them to try to kill each other... but,
for some reason, they didn't force BOTH Brent AND Nova to try to kill
each other.
Perhaps Nova's brain "can't handle their illusions" or their Mind
Control... They CAN screw around with Brent's willpower (and
Taylor's)... but MAYBE not Nova's. Hence, they can force Brent to try
to drown her (etc), but they might not be able to force her to bite
him, gouge out his eyes, kick him in the groin, etc etc.
Where was I again? Oh yeah. "That sounds insane" etc.
Before they interrogate Brent, they had Taylor in their clutches for
at least several days. Did they not interrogate him, too? Why
wouldn't they have done so? Perhaps they interrogate Brent, in
particular, because he -- after being lured down into their City from
the Queenboro Plaza ruin -- had stumbled into their Cathedral and
seen their Bomb. Taylor hadn't seen it, since Brent has to tell him
about it (etc).
But they went out of their way to 'acquire' Taylor [notably, LEAVING
NOVA BEHIND and NOT taking her, too...]-- using those Forbidden Zone
illusions on him, the same ones they used on Ursus' scouts, whom
they'd then brought to stand before them in their Grand Central
Station 'headquarters', right where Brent stands during his
interrogation. Would they not have read Taylor's mind, forcing him to
divulge WHO he is, WHERE he came from, WHY he's there, WHEN he came
from, etc. They KNOW when Brent attempts to lie, so it's a fair bet
that if Taylor were to attempt to lie to them, they'd sense that, too.
What would they have learned from Taylor, a couple days before they
found out (from Brent) that the Apes were marching on their city?
They would've found out that he had flown across many lightyears of
outer space, aging only 18 months (plus some "weeks" since his
landing) during the 2000 years or so that Earth had aged, and to
which he had inexplicably returned. They would be able to 'see' his
memories... the sinking ship... the trek across the Zone... the
Hunt... images of Ape City [perhaps that's where they got the image
of the Lawgiver statue -- from Taylor and/or the gorilla scouts -- to
use as part of their illusion against Ursus' army]... the image of
the half-buried Statue of Liberty...
And, ALL OF TAYLOR'S MEMORIES FROM BEFORE HE LANDED THERE. His
memories of being on Earth in the 20th Century, prior to departing in
1972. His memories of astronaut training. All of that. They could've
picked his brain -- they WOULD'VE picked his brain, since he had been
in Ape City. They wanted to know about Ape City, presumably, because
of the gorilla scouts trespassing on their territory, which is why
they interrogate Brent, I'd guess -- he'd been to Ape City more
recently, and would have more up-to-date intel to give 'em.
But... their own twisted worldview doesn't jibe with what Taylor's
mind would reveal to them. Regardless of their Mind Powers, they're
clearly INSANE. They believe really f***ed-up things, due to their
bonkers religion. As put-to-the-test as Taylor's mind has been of
late, due to his experiences with the talking apes and all that, he's
STILL got his marbles. He was able to make fine deductions regarding
Cornelius' artifacts. He was stunned and shocked... but NOT driven
insane. His mind contains memories... FACTS... experiences that can
not be reconciled with their twisted, sheltered, insane worldview.
Perhaps... they are able to REFUSE TO BELIEVE WHAT THEIR INNER EYES
CAN SEE inside Taylor's mind. Remember Zira chiding Cornelius
regarding Taylor's HANDWRITING... "Don't you believe your own
EYES???" Perhaps the Mutants are so devoted to their false religion
that when Taylor's Mind/Thoughts/Experiences PROVE their beliefs to
be untrue... they wilfully REFUSE to believe it. Perhaps Taylor is
telepathically quarantined from the vast majority of the Mutant
population, due to the 'bad influence' his Mind/Thoughts/Experiences
would have on the hoi polloi.
I don't know what-all you took into account when you invented the
plotline for "WITHIN", but I wonder how it holds up to speculative
deductions like the above...?
I guess, we'll see...
Ciao,
Patrick <.html

it would best be translated into film (faithfully) by a French
director with a predominantly French cast.

does not make the story "French". The dialog in a script is hardly
ever verbatim of the book's text, so the whole "Oh Apes" line could
be changed anyway... And face it, if this was to ever be filmed it
would more than likely have to be an "American" movie, if it'd be
expected to have any commercial appeal...
*** Well, I'M kinda hung up on the idea because I think the author's
original vision is somewhat important. There are 'Boulle-purists' out
there who may approve of the film versions of "BRIDE ON THE RIVER
KWAI" and "POTA" but consider them UNFAITHFUL to the author's
thematic intentions when he wrote their source novels. As much as I
love the movie "PLANET", I can see why Boulle himself might not have
been as thrilled as we were. His whole point, plotwise, was to reveal
the nature of Man as a 'dead-end' in Evolution, of sorts. It is Man's
ennui that compels him to HAND OVER his world to the Apes, allowing
the Apes to "ape" them, 'performing' as the new Masters of the once-
Master Race. One might almost think that the criticisms of the
Welfare State are part-and-parcel of Boulle's theme: many people on
Welfare cease to strive to better their condition, since they get
JUST ENOUGH money from the State to eke out an existence that
requires no real work and enough entertainment to make it tolerable.
That is the sort of life that the intelligent talking ancestors of
the mute humans of Soror reveal they'd degenerated to, when Helius
stimulates the female humans's brain and dredges up those ancestral
memories...
NONE of that made it into the 1968 film. Serling & Wilson USED
Boulle's sci-fi satirical scenario to tell a similar story --
they "aped" Boulle's novel -- to push a NON-BOULLE THEME: that Man
fell due to his impetus to DESTROY his own civilization through
weapons of mass destruction.
Personally, I think the film is a better, more relevant critique of
our Human Condition than Boulle's novel... but Boulle himself and
Boulle-purists would disagree.
And I think that a 'faithful' film version that told the same story
HE told would have a place. SHOULD have a place.
As for the 'French'-stuff, well, the novel's protagonist discovers
the 'shock'-ending of his own adventure by landing at Orly airport in
Paris. Ulysse Merou and Nova landed at the same place he, Levain, and
Antelle left Earth from in 2500.
Just because "LA PLANETE DES SINGES" takes place in the future
doesn't mean that it doesn't have a certain 'frenchiness' to it.
Victor Hugo's novels COULD be adapted into non-French fictions, set
in some mythical pseudo-British kingdom, say. The "THREE MUSKETEERS"
could be recast as three soldiers in some nondescript nation other
than France, etc etc etc... but it would LOSE something, wouldn't it?
As much as was gained when "PLANET" was made by Fox, some things WERE
lost. And I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing a film version that
attempted to be as faithful as possible to Boulle's original vision.
Frenchiness included.
But if you don't particularly care to see such a project, well,
that's your bag. Nobody'd be forcing you to see it.

*** Do we know which spaceship this Russian painting is supposed to
represent? Is it Jinn & Philip's solar sail ship? Is it Antelle's
mothership? Is it one of the 3 launches/shuttlecraft?
It looks too big to be a mere 'launch'/shuttlecraft-type of vessel.
And it doesn't resemble the rather detailed description of Jinn's
solar sail ship, either. My guess is that this picture is meant to
represent the big ship that Antelle had built, and that inside it are
the 3 smaller ships, the launches.
That's just my take on it, though...

*** You're welcome.
One other thing, though: after the Mutants
(presumably) ask him who
he is, he gives them his name -- "Brent"
[in the screenplay and the
novelization, he gives his full name as "John
Christopher Brent" if
I'm not mistaken]. Then, he asks them: "Who
are you?"
MEEP
"Oh, I see... the only reality in the
Universe... well, that's nice
to know..."
We know from their own insane view of things, that
their Bomb God
supposedly created Heaven under Earth, and that
the Holy Fallout
descended upon them all -- Mendez, during their
Mass, prays, "May the
blessings of the Holy Fallout descend on us all
this day..." etc etc.
They seem to have next to no knowledge of the Time
before the Nuke
War / Fallout / Underground-living / etc. began.
When they reveal
their ability to vocalize, Caspay tells Brent that
it is "a primitive
accomplishment" that they use when they
must... when they Pray and
Sing to their God, etc.
They view not only the Apes as their enemies, but
other Talking
Humans -- those who cannot telepathically share in
their mad
religion. They consider humans like Nova probably
less of an enemy
than the intelligent Apes and those rare talking
humans like Brent
and Taylor, but it's clear that they don't
particularly care about
them, since they're not hesitant to force Brent to
try to murder
Nova. They get their enemies to kill each other.
I wonder how things would've gone if they'd have
forced Nova to try
to kill Brent, instead? Wait till he's asleep and
then bash his head
in with a chunk of concrete rubble from the New
York Stock Exchange,
or something like that. When they put Brent in
with Taylor, the Negro
controls BOTH of them, forcing them to try to kill
each other... but,
for some reason, they didn't force BOTH Brent AND
Nova to try to kill
each other.
Perhaps Nova's brain "can't handle their
illusions" or their Mind
Control... They CAN screw around with Brent's
willpower (and
Taylor's)... but MAYBE not Nova's. Hence, they can
force Brent to try
to drown her (etc), but they might not be able to
force her to bite
him, gouge out his eyes, kick him in the groin,
etc etc.
Where was I again? Oh yeah. "That sounds
insane" etc.
Before they interrogate Brent, they had Taylor in
their clutches for
at least several days. Did they not interrogate
him, too? Why
wouldn't they have done so? Perhaps they
interrogate Brent, in
particular, because he -- after being lured down
into their City from
the Queenboro Plaza ruin -- had stumbled into
their Cathedral and
seen their Bomb. Taylor hadn't seen it, since
Brent has to tell him
about it (etc).
But they went out of their way to 'acquire' Taylor
[notably, LEAVING
NOVA BEHIND and NOT taking her, too...]-- using
those Forbidden Zone
illusions on him, the same ones they used on
Ursus' scouts, whom
they'd then brought to stand before them in their
Grand Central
Station 'headquarters', right where Brent stands
during his
interrogation. Would they not have read Taylor's
mind, forcing him to
divulge WHO he is, WHERE he came from, WHY he's
there, WHEN he came
from, etc. They KNOW when Brent attempts to lie,
so it's a fair bet
that if Taylor were to attempt to lie to them,
they'd sense that, too.
What would they have learned from Taylor, a couple
days before they
found out (from Brent) that the Apes were marching
on their city?
They would've found out that he had flown across
many lightyears of
outer space, aging only 18 months (plus some
"weeks" since his
landing) during the 2000 years or so that Earth
had aged, and to
which he had inexplicably returned. They would be
able to 'see' his
memories... the sinking ship... the trek across
the Zone... the
Hunt... images of Ape City [perhaps that's where
they got the image
of the Lawgiver statue -- from Taylor and/or the
gorilla scouts -- to
use as part of their illusion against Ursus'
army]... the image of
the half-buried Statue of Liberty...
And, ALL OF TAYLOR'S MEMORIES FROM BEFORE HE
LANDED THERE. His
memories of being on Earth in the 20th Century,
prior to departing in
1972. His memories of astronaut training. All of
that. They could've
picked his brain -- they WOULD'VE picked his
brain, since he had been
in Ape City. They wanted to know about Ape City,
presumably, because
of the gorilla scouts trespassing on their
territory, which is why
they interrogate Brent, I'd guess -- he'd been to
Ape City more
recently, and would have more up-to-date intel to
give 'em.
But... their own twisted worldview doesn't jibe
with what Taylor's
mind would reveal to them. Regardless of their
Mind Powers, they're
clearly INSANE. They believe really f***ed-up
things, due to their
bonkers religion. As put-to-the-test as Taylor's
mind has been of
late, due to his experiences with the talking apes
and all that, he's
STILL got his marbles. He was able to make fine
deductions regarding
Cornelius' artifacts. He was stunned and
shocked... but NOT driven
insane. His mind contains memories... FACTS...
experiences that can
not be reconciled with their twisted, sheltered,
insane worldview.
Perhaps... they are able to REFUSE TO BELIEVE WHAT
THEIR INNER EYES
CAN SEE inside Taylor's mind. Remember Zira
chiding Cornelius
regarding Taylor's HANDWRITING... "Don't you
believe your own
EYES???" Perhaps the Mutants are so devoted
to their false religion
that when Taylor's Mind/Thoughts/Experiences PROVE
their beliefs to
be untrue... they wilfully REFUSE to believe it.
Perhaps Taylor is
telepathically quarantined from the vast majority
of the Mutant
population, due to the 'bad influence' his
Mind/Thoughts/Experiences
would have on the hoi polloi.
I don't know what-all you took into account when
you invented the
plotline for "WITHIN", but I wonder how
it holds up to speculative
deductions like the above...?
I guess, we'll see...
Ciao,
Patrick

'faithful' film version,
with actors reciting the novel's original FRENCH
dialogue. Then the
line would be "O singes!" It probably
wouldn't come across as corny
if the actor read the line as good as a Shakespearean
actor
delivering the high-falutin' lines of the Bard.
Even though I dig the
1968 movie more than the source novel, I do love
the book and think
it would best be translated into film (faithfully)
by a French
director with a predominantly French cast.
>
> What I don't get is why you guys are so
damned hung up on having it
done in French anyway?(Chances are this is
something that will never
be anyway...) Just because the novel itself was
written in French
does not make the story "French". The
dialog in a script is hardly
ever verbatim of the book's text, so the whole
"Oh Apes" line could
be changed anyway... And face it, if this was to
ever be filmed it
would more than likely have to be an
"American" movie, if it'd be
expected to have any commercial appeal...
*** Well, I'M kinda hung up on the idea because I
think the author's
original vision is somewhat important. There are
'Boulle-purists' out
there who may approve of the film versions of
"BRIDE ON THE RIVER
KWAI" and "POTA" but consider them
UNFAITHFUL to the author's
thematic intentions when he wrote their source
novels. As much as I
love the movie "PLANET", I can see why
Boulle himself might not have
been as thrilled as we were. His whole point,
plotwise, was to reveal
the nature of Man as a 'dead-end' in Evolution, of
sorts. It is Man's
ennui that compels him to HAND OVER his world to
the Apes, allowing
the Apes to "ape" them, 'performing' as
the new Masters of the once-
Master Race. One might almost think that the criticisms
of the
Welfare State are part-and-parcel of Boulle's
theme: many people on
Welfare cease to strive to better their condition,
since they get
JUST ENOUGH money from the State to eke out an
existence that
requires no real work and enough entertainment to
make it tolerable.
That is the sort of life that the intelligent
talking ancestors of
the mute humans of Soror reveal they'd degenerated
to, when Helius
stimulates the female humans's brain and dredges
up those ancestral
memories...
NONE of that made it into the 1968 film. Serling
& Wilson USED
Boulle's sci-fi satirical scenario to tell a
similar story --
they "aped" Boulle's novel -- to push a
NON-BOULLE THEME: that Man
fell due to his impetus to DESTROY his own
civilization through
weapons of mass destruction.
Personally, I think the film is a better, more
relevant critique of
our Human Condition than Boulle's novel... but
Boulle himself and
Boulle-purists would disagree.
And I think that a 'faithful' film version that
told the same story
HE told would have a place. SHOULD have a place.
As for the 'French'-stuff, well, the novel's
protagonist discovers
the 'shock'-ending of his own adventure by landing
at Orly airport in
Paris. Ulysse Merou and Nova landed at the same
place he, Levain, and
Antelle left Earth from in 2500.
Just because "LA PLANETE DES SINGES"
takes place in the future
doesn't mean that it doesn't have a certain
'frenchiness' to it.
Victor Hugo's novels COULD be adapted into
non-French fictions, set
in some mythical pseudo-British kingdom, say. The
"THREE MUSKETEERS"
could be recast as three soldiers in some
nondescript nation other
than France, etc etc etc... but it would LOSE
something, wouldn't it?
As much as was gained when "PLANET" was
made by Fox, some things WERE
lost. And I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing a film
version that
attempted to be as faithful as possible to
Boulle's original vision.
Frenchiness included.
But if you don't particularly care to see such a
project, well,
that's your bag. Nobody'd be forcing you to see
it.

drawing, or as we like to call it here in New Orleans, Time Travel?
Your at your desk drawing APES, you blackout, you wake up, your at
your desk drawing spaceships, you blackout, you wake up, your at your
desk drawing robots, you blackout, you wake up, your at McDonald's
working there for three years and still not Asst. Manager. You want
to quit but your banging that girl on the fryalator... nevermind.

If I don't calm down I'm gonna get a "time
out". You guys missed my
insanity while I was away, didn't you? The voice
in my head said you
did. YOUR NOT CALLING HIM A LIAR ARE YOU?! I may
be getting my first
Planet of the Apes tattoo this week. I've been
drawing it up and all
is looking well. My tattoo artist is getting
impatient. He can't wait
to work on this one. Once I get it I will take
pictures and really
offend some people when I post them.
