Yeah sorry I wanted to provide a balanced
list and a few people missed out.
I wish I could have organised a preview for
everyone.
Oh. I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I will be waiting for the
release of the comic in December.

.htmlWell, I see Neil is just racing twoards his destiny. I noticed that
he has put out the strips faster than usual so he can share
his "unique" vision of what may have led Milo into space so quickly.
(I bet the pot smoking Ursus got a better response.) Hehehe, You
still my favorite hippy, Neil. We won't let them hurt you, much. :D

That was the first genuine confirmation
Dario but there had been whispers in the weeks prior to that.
I had heard it from a couple of
individuals that something was up, and someone actually forwarded something
Glen Schitz had posted a few days prior.
But yes, yours was definitely the first
report including any concrete information.

Yeah it's all
good but so far Fowler's look is my favourite.
The guy doing
the colouring is awesome too! Can't wait to see them team
up!
Anyway,
anyone referring to RUMOURS about the comic being late is just shit
stirring.
No rumours at
all - simply someone asked their distributor who said it was coming late.
That's not a rumour. It's a fact that has been
reported.
To call it a
rumour and try to make it a big deal is really stupid. I've asked Ty if it
is true and I'll let you know what he says.
However so
far all I have IS rumour re the Conquest DVD and apparently Fox is aware that
the comic is CONQUEST related and what i heard is if it is a hit Fox will
restore and reproduce a director's cut of Conquest.
Bat that IS a
rumour.
Michael

*** One of the reasons I believe Edward de Vere, XVIIth Earl of
Oxford, was the author who wrote "Hamlet" (etc) under the pseudonym
of 'William Shake-speare' is because there are soooooo many little
jokes in his plays that just can't be understood unless you know De
Vere's life story. He wrote about people he knew, people in positions
of power in Elizabeth's court, people he -- as an earl -- could
safely lampoon without any consequences other than having his written
works put out under a name other than his own.
In "PLANET", when Taylor tells Honorius that "Some apes, it seems,
are more equal than others..." it is a joke referencing Orwell's
novel "ANIMAL FARM". I wonder how many POTA fans are out there who
don't 'get' the joke, because they've never read Orwell? Or never had
that joke explained to them? Imagine if, somehow, in our distant
future a still-working DVD of the 'lost' movie "PLANET OF THE APES"
is discovered after having been forgotten for centuries... and when
they watch it, they get to that line of Taylor's and don't get the
joke, because the works of Orwell had also been lost in the
intervening centuries.

they watch it, they get to that line of Taylor's and don't get the
joke, because the works of Orwell had also been lost in the
intervening centuries.

*** Well, Cornelius DID tell the Prez Commission that Milo had found
the ship "on our seaboard"... and he (Cornelius) differentiates between
the LAKE in which Taylor's ship splashed down and the SEA (the Ocean),
at least twice: he, referring back to the site of Taylor's raft,
says "The terrain around that LAKE is poisonous..." -- and, earlier,
he'd said: "It's a long detour to DEAD LAKE..." This same body of water
is referred to by Zaius as "an inland SEA of our eastern desert", while
pointing out "his [i.e. Taylor's] assertion" in the written testimony
Taylor wanted Cornelius to enter into the record.
But Cornelius uses the word "SEA" to refer to the OCEAN -- the big body
of water along which Taylor and Nova ride their horse "towards the
North" eventually to find the Statue of Liberty. "... between the LAKE
and the SEA..." he tells Brent.
Cornelius -- if he's telling the truth to the Commission about this --
is telling them that Milo found the spaceship on the shore, the
coastline, of the OCEAN -- NOT at the LAKE where Taylor's ship sank in
the 1st movie.
Is Cornelius telling them the truth about this? After all, he DOES lie
to them about not knowing Colonel Taylor ("No... is he a soldier?").
But he had a reason for lying about that. It doesn't matter where Milo
found the spaceship, as far as this Commission is concerned, does it?
They haven't the foggiest idea what Cornelius' world is like -- he
could invent a wholly fictitious landscape out of an Ape fairy tale and
describe THAT terrain and, for all they know, he'd be telling them the
truth... or not.
I think Cornelius (and Zira) are willing to lie when they have an
urgent NEED to do so -- to safeguard themselves (and their as-yet-
unborn child) when the Truth will endanger them. But, when they have to
explain to the Commission about how they came to be in one of their
spaceships, it seems pretty straightforward:
1) the spaceship they flew backwards-through-Time had LANDED -- it
didn't SPLASH DOWN and then SINK... it LANDED
2) it landed on the SHORE OF THE OCEAN -- "on our seaboard" and NOT
into the LAKE that is separated from the SEA/OCEAN by a peninsula
3) Milo found this spaceship, and it -- unlike the two previously seen
ships -- was in WORKING ORDER: it had POWER (unlike Taylor's ship,
which FIRST lost its "Primary Power" and THEN lost its "AUXILIARY
POWER", as Landon says: "It's no use! The POWER's gone!")... and it had
a working COMPUTER, since the flight record was able to be studied by
the NASA technicians who reported to the President that the "flight
synthesizer" registered the Before and After Year-Dates as "3955"
and "1973" respectively -- and Brent's ship's computer, as he told his
Skipper, was "SHOT". Kaput. Broken. Fritzed out. Out-of-working-order.
4) Despite all the above... the ship Milo found was, according to the
President, "... the one commanded by Colonel Taylor..." -- it being ONE
of TWO ships that had been REPORTED as "lost" over a year earlier.
How can Milo's ship BE Taylor's ship? Different fans can try to finagle
this evidence any which way they please... and my way is to suggest
that the TWO ships the President refers to are VIRDON's ship (which
went out into space, headed for Alpha Centauri, BEFORE the landing of
the Ape-onauts) and TAYLOR's ship, heading off towards a star system
320 lightyears away in Orion... but, by "Taylor's ship" I'm really
referring to a mission that involves a primary ship (a "mothership")
which, like Antelle's vessel, is designed to be an orbiting vessel from
which THREE SMALLER SECONDARY VESSELS can detach and land on the
surface of the orbited planet. Just as Antelle, Levain, and Merou (and
Hector the chimp) land on Soror in one of these "chaloupes"/"launches"
(shuttlecraft), so too does Taylor (with Dodge/Landon/Stewart) land in
such a shuttle, which had detached from the primary ship. Later, a
SECOND such shuttlecraft lands, with 'Skipper' and Brent in it. Both of
these two vessels are rendered inoperable -- water damage and lost
power... engine fire and computer failure -- they CAN'T be used to get
back up into orbit...
But there was a THIRD such shuttlecraft, and IT was landed onto the
planet somewhere on the shoreline of the Ocean, the Sea... and IT WAS
STILL IN WORKING ORDER. And Milo found it. And he went to Cornelius and
Zira, told 'em about it, had 'em get some things together in a "carpet
bag", made a journey from Ape City to that site somewhere on the
ocean's coastline...
And they got into the damned thing and flew it into orbit.
How??? How did Milo learn how to fly it?
Did he have to know how?
What if those who had landed it had left it there (to go off to find
Taylor and Brent, etc) after having PRE-PROGRAMMED IT so that it could
launch into orbit all at the press of ONE button?! Just like when we
click the "SEND" button on these "REPLY" or "POST MESSAGE" pages...
just ONE action, the press of ONE button, which puts into play all the
pre-programmed computer commands that were just waiting for the press
of that single button.
It could be just that simple. All the Ape-onauts had to do was get into
those spacesuits, strap themselves into the three chairs, breathe deep,
and hope that they didn't blast off only to explode in mid-air.
I just had a wicked thought.
Suppose... just suppose... that, when the Trio (Milo, Cornelius, and
Zira) got to the ship, that they heard the RADIO in it cracklin' a
message: "ANSA mothership to landing party... come in! Are you there?
Helloooo...? Anybody there...?"
And, inside the spaceship, Milo tentatively presses the button that
says RADIO TRANSMIT on it (or something like that)... and answers the
mysterious voice coming out of the speaker.
Whoever is on the other end of that conversation has NO IDEA that he's
talking to an intelligent chimpanzee. Milo probably believes that the
voice is from a HUMAN like Taylor, the "speaking monster".
Does Milo know what happened to the 3 astronauts who had landed this
machine? Suppose he DOES know... that they were captured by Ursus and
then killed. What should he tell the Voice on the ANSA radio set?
What if he tells Him or Her that "they're all dead"...
What would the reaction from the ANSA personnel up in the orbiting
mothership be?
They would want their shuttlecraft back. And they have the means to get
it back, IF they can use that radio-link to REMOTELY FLY it back up
into orbit.
Let's suppose, then, that the 3 apes are in their green-&-brown
chimpanzee duds... inside the cockpit... and then, SUDDENLY, the hatch
closes! They're TRAPPED inside it! The pre-flight engine systems come
online... the ship lifts off (perhaps "blasting off" via ordinary
rockets, or perhaps using an advanced "antigravitic" type of propulsion
system), and the apes find themselves trapped in a FLYING machine!
Once in orbit, they find themselves in Zero-Gee, floating in the
cockpit. They get themselves inside the spacesuits that had been left
there by the human astronauts who'd landed the ship, helping each other
into them...
The shuttlecraft is on a "burn" that is intended to get it up to the
mothership's orbit, so that it can dock with it...
... and then the Earth is annihilated. Taylor detonates the Doomsday
Bomb, there's a bright white blinding light, the rim of the Earth
melts, and then there's a tornado in the sky... BEFORE the shuttle can
link up with the Mothership that had been remotely piloting it up to
rendezvous with it, unbeknownst to the Apes.
The Earth, having been transformed into a Black Hole by the explosion-
and-implosion of the Bomb, still acts to pull at the ships with its
gravity. Somehow, the surface-to-orbit "burn" is cancelled; perhaps the
Mothership dudes freak out at seeing the planet annihilated like that,
and ditch their attempt to bring in their shuttlecraft, and make haste
to do a Mothership engine burn to get them further away from the Black
Hole that once was Earth, into a higher orbit, or else away from the
Earth-Moon system entirely.
Leaving the Ape-onauts all alone in a ship which -- no longer doing an
engine burn -- will inevitably FALL back towards the center of gravity
of the once-Earth Black Hole's event horizon...
... thru the Time Warp, generated by the shuttle's onboard hyperdrive
engines...
... and back to 1973, the SE corner of sector Alpha Charlie.
And THAT is just another way to get those monkeys up into space!

There is a
hint to this - in the dialogue between the 2 gorillas Ursus and Marcus....their
rank is the clue.
Another clue
is that Ursus has not assembled an army yet. I am suggesting that he is
permitted by Zaius to because he came to possess an old book about armies and
war and power and became obsessed with it. Of course Zaius destroyed the
book, but Ursus wants his army, and he is driven by the "brains trust" - his
wife - to seek power....RAW etc etc....!

like the story and I really like the art. When I see Neils art in pencil
most of my criticism about the art in BTB go away. I think we are opposites,
I think Neils pencils are stronger than his inks and I am vice versa.
I also really like the comic strip format. I wish you two had the rights to
Tooncast this thing all over the internet. This makes a LOT of the webcomics
out there look pretty bad. Too both of you, is it harder to write and plan
in this format than standard comic book format?
I liked BTB, I just enjoy Within more.

are places that will let you mail-order comics the same weeek they are released. Midtwon Comics is one of those:

Of course you do!
BTB was a story that we adapted to make a
comic and I really did kinda rush into that.
I think it’s a good story, but
originally there were NO orangs, NO apes other than
Gideon etc and no real aspects of the movie other than the ship and the timing
involved.
That’s why you will find a different
version in print where I added some scenes to give more of a feel of being
there at the time it is set. Neil –
I think you agree it adds a new dimension?
When we did BTB I wanted a story that we
could use.
WITHIN is a story that was developed to BE
a comic. Every panel has in mind a
visual layout. I actually draw them
– I don’t write them.
Every once in a while I actually draw a
page from Going Home and ask Neil to stick with the format I drew unless he
thinks it totally sucks! One page
in particular (15 I think) actually looks great….
More often though I send the script to
Neil because he’s the man when it comes to the art and if he sees what I
drew it would taint his originality.
I don’t think he EVER comes back
with much like what I visualised and drew, but it always blows me away!
AND every so often he REALLY takes some liberties…..like the pot-smoking
gorillas (J) or the T-8006d…….but you will have to wait for WITHIN
chapter 66 to understand this……..

BTB is actually being revisited at the
moment.
It is with a publisher who told me
straight it would need a re-write.
This is a bit disappointing because Neil
and I both agree they probably want the humans to be on hovercrafts with a
large beast and a few new weapons so it is an action packed blockbuster, and
that’s just NOT what it is.
BUT…I have thought of other ways to
link it to the films and make it more exciting. How to pull it off is a different
story! And whether to bother, or
get on to one of the many other projects we have planned……well, hmmmm…..

Okay, I will stick my neck
out again. I like Within more than BTB. I really
like the story and I really like the art. When I
see Neils art in pencil
most of my criticism about the art in BTB go away.
I think we are opposites,
I think Neils pencils are stronger than his inks
and I am vice versa.
I also really like the comic strip format. I wish
you two had the rights to
Tooncast this thing all over the internet. This
makes a LOT of the webcomics
out there look pretty bad. Too both of you, is it
harder to write and plan
in this format than standard comic book format?
I liked BTB, I just enjoy Within more.
I took the password protection off of Apocalypse
Whenever for the time
being, so check it out if you want. Feedback
welcome.

Mike,
Have a look at the BTB on Hunter’s
site then compare it with the PRINTED version.
Any changes would be similar to this –
more ENHANCEMENTS than anything.
But like I said it has a low priority and unless someone starts paying
Neil to do this full time we are going to probably just let it go.

*** In Beavis & Butt-head, they use the verb "to
bogart" quite often, meaning "to hog, keep to oneself
selfishly" etc. As in: "Hey, Beavis... don't bogart
all the nachos!" - "Shut up, Butt-head! Heh-heh.
Heh-heh."
Regarding a collaboration on a short POTA story, that
sounds like it might be fun!
Here's an idea I was kicking around, though it might
seem like treading-on-familiar-ground that "WITHIN"
has been covering.
In "PLANET" it is established that Cornelius had a
'diggings' site in the Forbidden Zone -- a site that
Zira didn't go to (she refers to HIS work there). But
Cornelius uses the word "we" in regards to his last
expedition a year prior to "PLANET" -- and my take on
this is that he and Milo were co-explorers of the
Forbidden Zone: Cornelius, after mapping a good chunk
of the Zone, eventually goes back to Ape City to
propose his theory to the Academy -- and narrowly
escapes getting his 'head-chopped-off' -- while Milo
continues to explore the Zone alone... eventually
discovering the third ANSA ship on the ocean shore,
etc etc.
But... for a time, they're together in the Zone,
especially at the Cave site -- Cornelius surely didn't
build that long wooden causeway/ramp all by himself,
did he?
I imagined a story (well, a 'prequel' chapter to the
"PLANET" portion of my epic) depicting Cornelius and
Milo at the Cave site, and their discovery of the
artifacts...
In this episode, I speculate that perhaps Cornelius
and Milo were both wooing Zira -- that there was a
love-triangle of sorts going on, and that Zira was
more enamored of Cornelius, to Milo's (perhaps secret)
chagrin.
And, at the Cave site, despite the fact that Cornelius
and Milo are the best of friends, there's this
undercurrent of rivalry...
Remember the line: "We don't kill our enemies... we
get our enemies to kill each other"...? Well, I
imagined a scene where Milo -- a bit angry at
Cornelius for being the 'preferred' one in the love
triangle -- begins to see things that aren't really
there... scary things... maybe the ghost of his dead
father and mother, telling him that HE should be the
one to get Zira (and, thus, give them grandchildren),
which he will... if he can remove Cornelius from the
picture...
In other words, the Mutants try to do to Milo what the
Overlook Hotel does to Jack Torrance in "THE SHINING":
get him to kill someone he cares about, using a
personal weakness against him -- his jealousy over
Zira.
I imagine a moment where Cornelius is asleep, and Milo
finds himself standing over him with a shovel, about
to bash his brains in... maybe even being compelled to
do so, like when Taylor and Brent are later forced to
fight each other...
But the Mutants aren't able to control Milo as easily,
due to the distance involved, perhaps. They can plant
images in his mind, or dredge up memories of dead
relatives and try to manipulate his emotions with
'em... but they can't control him like a puppeteer
controlling a puppet...
... and Milo snaps out of it, horrified at what he
almost did. He realizes that there IS something truly
evil in the Zone, despite his rational doubts about
the Lawgiver's teachings... and eventually parts
company with Cornelius, wishing him the best possible
future with Zira, etc.
In a way, this little 'episode' should have a feel of,
oh, a horror story. A 'ghost' story reminiscent of
Stephen King (the "SHINING" mind-f***) and one of my
favorite horror stories, "PIGEONS FROM HELL" by Robert
E. Howard.
It also gives one way of explaining the fate of those
gorillas who had left their bones in that cave long
ago. How did those gorillas die? Perhaps they were
compelled by mind-manipulating Mutants into being
violent with each other... using their petty grudges
to fan the flames of tantrums leading to fighting
leading to murder. Milo, at one point, might even have
a nightmare where he 'sees' that long-ago event --
which the Mutants still remember, passing it down
through the generations, having generated the incident
themselves -- and he gets the bad feeling that they
are trespassing on 'evil' territory. Before the
Mutants try to compel him to kill Cornelius, they
first try to scare the living shit out of him by
making him think he's having a religious vision
depicting the simian God's punishment of those who
ignore his taboo about the 'forbidden' zone...
I realize that "WITHIN" is already dealing with Milo
and archaological stuff (the Dr. Garvon scenes, etc),
so this particular episode might feel like it's
covering the same ground, though in a rival scenario
(i.e. mine). Anyway, I thought I'd throw the idea out
there. If it's something you think could be
interesting to flesh out into a comic, I'd be more
than happy to write up a treatment, keeping it fairly
simple and straightforward. Keeping the 'dialogue'
perhaps to just diary entries in Milo's journal,
including his descriptions of scenes with Cornelius...
his bad dreams... his secret enmity towards Cornelius
over Zira, etc.
What do you think of that, by the way? The idea that
Milo might have seemed 'antagonistic' with Zira in
"ESCAPE" because, deep down, he wishes she had
preferred HIM rather than Cornelius? He, being the
jilted unrequited lover, transfers his disappointment
into subconscious dislike of his best friend and
rival. And, when he is killed by the primitive
gorilla, Zira is devastated because she knows that he
loved her, and that she and her child (and her
husband) survived Doomsday because Milo wanted to save
them before time ran out...
Such a possibility might explain why he would go to
them, eventually, and to no one else, when it comes
time to reveal his discovery of the ANSA ship. Perhaps
he comes across enough information to suspect that the
world doesn't have much longer to last -- that they
are living in the last year (the "3955" date that
would 'later' be discovered by the President, et al.
in 1973) and that if he wants his best friend and the
gal he wishes he could've married to survive... he
needs to get them to join him at the spaceship...
Let me know what you think, Mike & Neil. If not this
story, I'm sure I can think up some other scenario at
some other point in the 2,000 year timeline of POTA --
perhaps a tale about the Lawgiver himself, and how he
came to know that the Zone was a baaaaad place (not
just because of the ruined skyscrapers, perhaps, but
also maybe because of mind-f***ing mutants...?).
Ciao!
Patrick

*** In Beavis & Butt-head, they use the verb "to bogart" quite often, meaning "to hog, keep to oneself selfishly" etc. As in: "Hey, Beavis... don't bogart
all the nachos!" - "Shut up, Butt-head! Heh-heh. Heh-heh."
Regarding a collaboration on a short POTA story, that sounds like it might be fun!
Here's an idea I was kicking around, though it might seem like treading-on-familiar-ground that "WITHIN" has been covering.
In "PLANET" it is established that Cornelius had a
'diggings' site in the Forbidden Zone -- a site that Zira didn't go to (she refers to HIS work there). But Cornelius uses the word "we" in regards to his last
expedition a year prior to "PLANET" -- and my take on this is that he and Milo were co-explorers of the Forbidden Zone: Cornelius, after mapping a good chunk
of the Zone, eventually goes back to Ape City to propose his theory to the Academy -- and narrowly escapes getting his 'head-chopped-off' -- while Milo
continues to explore the Zone alone... eventually discovering the third ANSA ship on the ocean shore, etc etc.
But... for a time, they're together in the Zone,
especially at the Cave site -- Cornelius surely didn't build that long wooden causeway/ramp all by himself, did he?
I imagined a story (well, a 'prequel' chapter to the
"PLANET" portion of my epic) depicting Cornelius and Milo at the Cave site, and their discovery of the artifacts...
In this episode, I speculate that perhaps Cornelius
and Milo were both wooing Zira -- that there was a love-triangle of sorts going on, and that Zira was more enamored of Cornelius, to Milo's (perhaps secret) chagrin.
And, at the Cave site, despite the fact that Cornelius and Milo are the best of friends, there's this undercurrent of rivalry...
Remember the line: "We don't kill our enemies... we
get our enemies to kill each other"...? Well, I imagined a scene where Milo -- a bit angry at Cornelius for being the 'preferred' one in the love
triangle -- begins to see things that aren't really there... scary things... maybe the ghost of his dead father and mother, telling him that HE should be the
one to get Zira (and, thus, give them grandchildren), which he will... if he can remove Cornelius from the picture...
In other words, the Mutants try to do to Milo what the
Overlook Hotel does to Jack Torrance in "THE SHINING": get him to kill someone he cares about, using a personal weakness against him -- his jealousy over Zira.
I imagine a moment where Cornelius is asleep, and Milo finds himself standing over him with a shovel, about to bash his brains in... maybe even being compelled to
do so, like when Taylor and Brent are later forced to fight each other...
But the Mutants aren't able to control Milo as easily, due to the distance involved, perhaps. They can plant
images in his mind, or dredge up memories of dead relatives and try to manipulate his emotions with 'em... but they can't control him like a puppeteer controlling a puppet...
... and Milo snaps out of it, horrified at what he almost did. He realizes that there IS something truly evil in the Zone, despite his rational doubts about
the Lawgiver's teachings... and eventually parts company with Cornelius, wishing him the best possible future with Zira, etc.

This is an interesting story, Patrick. Why don't you write it out. I would love to read some dialog between Milo and Cornelius. Elaine

have you back Damon and in answer to the question you asked in a
previous post I do actually find it easier to do the strips in the
Within format than normal comic book format. Even though it seems it
should be more restrictive not being able to vary the sizes of the
panels significantly and using layout to make the story flow, it must
focus my brain more to try and make it work or something!
I checked out your comic and it is coming along very nicely, do you
have this all plotted out or are you making it up as you go along?
