It's not so much the makeup but the lighting.  PLANET and BENEATH were shot by two of Fox's best cinematographers.  The TV show wasn't, not because they didn't know their stuff, but because there wasn't the time to do careful setups that would make the makeup look as good as possible.

This is so . . .
The DP and the Gaffer can spend an hour
getting the lighting right for a shot that may
last less than a minute, and I mean a lot
less.  Most TV shows aren't going to allow
them the luxury of an hour on a 3 second
shot even if it's important. Time is money.

In fact I also remember shooting an 8mm movie of part of an
episod of Star Trek and trying to sync the sound from a
cassette tape with it.  But with the variations in the
speeds of the motors it'd be off in 30 seconds.

That's a pretty cool cover, but it has problems.  The picture of Taylor and Nova is from BENEATH.  They always use that one, not realizing of course it's from the wrong movie!  And the caption above Dr. Zaius is from the Marvel comics!  What's up with that?

Otherwise, it's OK.  Better than stuff we got here.

Oh the comics code used to try and stop comic companies from using
the world flick because of the notorious bad printing back in the
day, they were concerned that those two letters would run together.
they also frowned on the name Clint which Roy Thomas managed to sneak
past them in a mid-sixties Marvel. Just thought you might like to
              know...:)

how atoms can suddenly be created where they haven't existed before
(the apes and their spaceship popping into 1973), and I don't see how
the atoms that make up the apes in the future owe their very

Oh the comics code used to try and stop comic companies from using
the world flick because of the notorious bad printing back in the
day, they were concerned that those two letters would run together.
they also frowned on the name Clint which Roy Thomas managed to sneak
past them in a mid-sixties Marvel. Just thought you might like to
              know

Pertwee is the first I remember seeing.

I thought I was going to go off Dr Who when he died, but Tom Baker was really incredible.

              Hey everybody.

I’m assuming you have seen the Trading Cards on Hunter’s site (done by Greg P and Neil – and others too: please insert name here).

If one of these sets were to be chosen by Rittenhouse to be released – WHICH one should it be?  What would you be prepared to pay for it?

I am not just asking this question to formulate discussion.

Thats a very difficult question, as I'm sure everyone has their
own "favorite" amongst the POTA offerings. Personally, I'd like to see
them release each sequel set, in order for $10 - $12 a set. Then, after
Battle was released, I'd like a 2-pack set of the 2nd and 3rd TV series
sets. I know that probably wasn't quite the answer you were looking for
but, as a die hard ape fan I can't narrow it down any further. Of
course, you're talking to the guy who is still uploading chapters of
Marvel's "Terror" series so I can put it all on one disc. :)

That’s fine Steve you gave a response and it is genuine.

I sure don’t know if they’d even consider it for $10-$12….remember the HESTON set cost $20 - $25 for 9 cards?  Maybe it was that thick card stock etc and yes, these cards HAVE been prepared/all the work has been done.

I agree Beneath is probably the best to release next, followed by the others…IF it sells….

This is a great question fellas – I actually seem to recall asking this myself and it is also very relevant to the comics.

While we are waiting for the group comic to get organised, Neil has started with a concept we were discussing – a POTA Down Under.

I was going to do a different CONQUEST….one set in the FUTURE that does not refer to a government that DOES NOT EXIST etc, and the more I look at this new environment Neil has created, the more I am thinking I might just combine this with the Aussie setting.

Just gotta convince Neil to abandon the strip format…..wish me luck!

I'm tempted to suggest explore other parts of the planet too - but
that brings back memories of some of the less memorable aspects of the
                Adventure comics.

*** This'll boggle the mind, so here goes! The atoms that made up the
Ape-onauts and the spaceship exist in TWO places at the same "time",
but not at the SAME spacetime coordinates. In other words, the ANSA
ship exists BOTH on its outward-bound flight to that unnamed star
system out in Orion AND back on Earth from the moment the Ape-onauts
pop into existence in 1973. The EARLIER (Ship-Time) version is less
than a lightyear away from Earth heading into Deep Space while the
LATER (Ship-Time) version -- made up of the same atoms -- has zipped
back through Time. Since those same atoms are not occupying the same
spacetime coordinates they aren't violating any exclusion laws in
Physics: the X,Y,Z spatial coordinates are different, so that the T
coordinate can be the same -- the X,Y,Z, and T all go together to
                describe an object in SpaceTime.

I haven't time for Patrick's pseudoscientific gobbledygook.  It's like all the technobabble on Star Trek -- fun to listen to, but basically bullshit.  Oh, it's all based on sound theory, but not possible.  POTA depends on suspension of disbelief.  My suspension only goes so far.  Anyway, a "causality loop" is a nice idea, but I reject it for the film series.  I go with the alternate timeline scenario.  Can the future be changed?  I vote YES!

If the future can't be changed, and the world of POTA is doomed to always end in nuclear holocaust, then what's the point of it all?  The "causality loop" universe of Patrick and others throws the whole of POTA into an abyss of meaninglessness.

It does.  And that’s precisely the seller for me.

Nobody can say precisely what the film-makers intended.  If they could, I might be sold, but other than a comment from Dehn about “It’s all a big circle” (which could mean ANYTHING), none of the key players have commented.

It does seem that there is a mixture of intentions there and they CLASH.

The "causality loop" universe of Patrick and others throws the whole of POTA into an abyss of meaninglessness.

                  opinion.

As for how much I would be willing to pay I really couldn't say. How
much does an average card set cost?

                  Neil

.html.html Here's an 8x10 still I have from BENEATH.  Maybe you remember it from the Marvel comic it appeared in.  It's an old-fashioned composite still of around seven images from the BENEATH location shoot in Red Rock Canyon, CA in 1969.  Way over on the left you can make out the gorillas hanging on the inverted crosses on the side of a hill.

I thought maybe Neil would like to do a wide-panel drawing based on this, but with the Ursus in the middle looking at us.  Take some time on it and make it really detailed.

This is the way you should make all the gorillas look!  Not like the TV show.  You can make 'em fatter, uglier or whatever, but keep this basic look -- PLANET pure.

Also, this could be the cover for a comic based on the character!  (Hint. Hint.)

I'm not saying I wouldn't pay $25 for one of those sets, I just
remember paying about $10 for the other sets I've gotten. Of course,
that was a bit of a while ago, have card prices gone up that much?

On a different note, anyone have an idea why I can't seem to see the
pictures folks post that they've included?

Neil and I are currently working on a look for a plague of apes that didn’t turn out smarter, but instead turned out less intelligent.  Might be room for some ultra-violent fanged ones too?

They have.  Maybe a standard pack set without specials, but $25 is fair.  Actually, I really don’t believe they WOULD do it for as LITTLE as $25, but we shall see.

I'm not saying I wouldn't pay $25 for one of those sets, I just
                          remember
paying about $10 for the other sets I've gotten. Of course,
                          that
was a bit of a while ago, have card prices gone up that much?

Wow, I remember going to a local flea market and picking up a bunch of
comics and trading cards by the box, thenm sitting down and breaking
them into sets. Ahhh, the good old days.
Would it be feasible to print them onto card stock and into sets just
for us collectors/fans? Maybe downloading the sets to disc and see if a
printer could put them on cardstock?

I think some people have already done this, but what I would like to see is a good print up of these on a fair card stock (not like the 9 card set – that was a VERY high stock) and the wrapper (just one per set).  I think price comes down as print quantity goes up so it would be important to pick one that WOULD sell and then set about pre-selling it.

                          Michael

Americans find it difficult to come to grips with the fact that Kangaroos are pests and road kill down here.  They are stupid animals and they have NO idea how to get out of the way of a car (and they do a lot of damage).  I’m drawing a parallel between the roos and the docile apes.

A kangaroo is just a big rat!

I do remember that Aussie kid show from the sixties, SKIPPY!  My younger brother loved it and would clip the dog's leash to the back of his pants and hop around the house!

                          .html

Well Tim, off the top of my head we have seen a few covers Neil designed for POTA and the 4 sequels and we have had a couple of comments about those.  Tim, get yourself up to speed on these and let us know your thoughts.  Neil had intended to draw these tightly (and colour them?) but Rory “Photoshopped” a cover for PLANET from these and it looks great (I think – whaddayoureckon?)

Revolution #2 is out and we have had like one comment.....and that was MINE!  Well, maybe there was a second comment?  Tim, what do you think about it?

Lastly I have followed up with the boss of Rittenhouse on his comments that he would like to see sets made from Greg P’s cards.  Greg and I have known about this for some time – Greg sent him high res copies almost a year ago – but since it was all pending sales on the $99 set (which did NOT sell well), I wanted to leave it as long as possible to contact Steve again.  Well, someone stirred up the hornet’s nest a couple of weeks back so I asked again and (while it will be a hard task) there IS a chance of getting a set out.  So now we are trying to decide which would pre-sell about 500 sets and how much people would pay.

Any thoughts would be extremely welcome.

                          Michael

                          Thanks Whit for the catchup...!!

I will check out Neils covers!
I liked Revolution #2...I'm just glad there are new
comics coming out and I think they are doing a fine
job with them.......! My local store even got more
                          editions of No.1 in....

The Rittenhouse news is excellent! I think if they
sold them at a REASONABLE price then they would sell
well.......the 99 bucks was too much and
                          ridiculous......

I will try and keep up but there are so many ape
emails a day that when I am busy with work I simply
dont have time to read them.....then if you miss two
days it's up past 300!.......I'll check in when I can!

and Rory....where's the love man? I thought we were
                          tight!! ;)

Oh, I definitely don't think it should be a chase set or a 9 card set,
it has to be a full set of cards. IMO

That’s what I told him and he was absolutely FURIOUS that I dare suggest this.

Hence my lengthy pause before contacting him again, to ask him about Greg’s cards.

Cool! Thanks for letting me know -- I'll check the newer version as well. Were any
changes made to the existing pages, or did you simply add additional pages?

If Rittenhouse still does not understand why their overpriced cards
are not selling then it's because they are simply out to gouge
customers. We are not talking about cards that are slightly
overpriced, their cards are orders of magnitude more expensive than
anything out there. Not only were the cards overpriced, but having
only a few scattered apes with a bunch of Heston pictures can hardly
                          be called "Apes" cards.

Some may say that it is better than not having them at all, but I
disagree. These guys are HARMING the POTA franchise because their
tactics are doomed to fail and then the failure reflects badly on the
POTA fans that are willing to pay 'decent' prices.

I say encourage those that put out realistically priced items (like
the current MR. Comics line), and begone with greedy providers who
really couldn't care less about the product or the customers.
