good, Thade was actually a great villain as far as apes go. The whole dinner

================================================
*** Hah!
By 1974 -- just 6 years after the release of the
original "PLANET OF THE APES" -- APJAC Productions &
20th Century-Fox had released 4 profitable film
sequels and 14 episodes of a TV spin-off series which
was cancelled in spite of the fact that its ratings
were not too shabby considering that it was put up
opposite the 2 most-watched sitcoms of the time
("CHICO AND THE MAN" and "SANFORD AND SON") and was
never given an opportunity to be juggled around on the
schedule.
It's been 6 years since the release of Tim Burton's
crappy "re-imagining"... and, despite the fact that
his film DID make a lot of money (mostly from the
willingness of Classic POTA fans to shell out money
for product with the same name as the 1968 original),
I ask you: have there been any film sequels? Any TV
spin-off series? A cartoon series?
No, no, and no!
Oh, there was some merchandizing... LOTS of
merchandizing... but just ask Terry Hoknes if it was
profitable for 'em! The horrid film version of
"BATTLEFIELD EARTH" had merchandizing, too... and it
sold probably as much as "Leo" action figures did!
Meanwhile, Classic POTA-related merchandise -- such as
the Medicoms, the Sideshow figures, the various Icarus
kits, not to mention the new comic "REVOLUTION ON THE
POTA" -- outsells ANY and ALL of the Burton-film's
stuff.
And, yes, there were some comicbook spin-offs from
Burton's film... but did anybody ever really give a
rat's ass? Compare the fan reaction to those comics
versus the appreciation Classic POTA fans still feel
towards the efforts MARVEL put into their POTA
magazine, all 29 issues of 'em!
How many fans of Burton's film can recite virtually
the entire film's dialogue? Not one in a million, I'd
bet. But how many fans of the Classic POTA film (and
its sequels) can recite much -- even most or ALL -- of
their dialogue? I've seen the 5-films of Classic POTA
enough times to be able to do just that, and I'd bet
that there are quite a few people here who also can do
so.
Schaffner's POTA rules the planet, bucko! Burton's
ugh-inspiring "re-imagining" -- despite being
financially a "success" -- has done more to BURY any
hopes of ever seeing another POTA film being made.
The most we can hope for is the occasional homage to
POTA, as in "JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK" or on
"THE SIMPSONS" every once in a while. And these
efforts -- contemporary ones -- have put in their
appearances THIRTY YEARS after the hey-day of Classic
POTA. Talk about "standing the test of time"! In the
year 2031 will anybody give two shits that it's the
30th Anniversary of the release of Burton's
"re-imagining" of POTA???
Yeah, it made its money back, and then some... but it
was a critical failure -- and the vast majority of
POTA fans hated it. Thus, there haven't been any film
sequels yet made... and there never WILL be. All
thanks to the "genius" of Tim Burton and the
screenwriter whose crappy script he filmed.
Ugh.

could have been really good, Thade was actually a great villain as far as apes

But how many fans of the Classic POTA film (and
its sequels) can recite much -- even most or ALL -- of
their dialogue? I've seen the 5-films of Classic POTA
enough times to be able to do just that, and I'd bet
that there are quite a few people here who also can do
so.

Here's my two cents on this very subject. It might be too unique an experience to help, but it's one I have experience with.
I'm as much of a fan of pop culture as I am a purveyor of it. I've seen all five hundred Star Trek episodes a dozen times each, I've probably read more Batman comics than anyone alive and I've
devoted too much energy in getting every issue of Marvel's Avengers titles, and putting them in lovely bags and boards in my house. I've recorded every Simpsons and adored darn near each one of them. I
owned a set of the Apes movies for twenty years, and watch all five in a week, as an annual ritual in the summer. As part of my job, I've ended up working on NEARLY all these properties professionally, and I
am thrilled that I got to, but it comes with a price. Your fandom goes out the window.
I'm always mentally taking notes when watching the Simpsons, studying the dialogue and the rhythms. I get jealous of good ideas that the other writers come up with, rather than simply enjoying them.
After five years of writing Batman comics, I completely stopped reading them for years, and now rarely glance at them. I didn't even SEE the recent Superman movie, something people who know me can't
believe. And as for POTA, I must have watched Escape and Conquest ten times or more in the space of six months, and I probably won't do my Apes festival for years now.
A couple of months ago, I was asked if I wanted to work on the new Star Trek comic series. I declined. HELL no.
The thing that appeals to the fan in me is to visit a world that's FAR away from the world I live in. To GO to Ape City, or Gotham, or the Enterprise in my mind is the best part of the experience. If
I get too involved in actually creating these environments, or make too much of my day about living there, then they no longer are pleasant escapes.
I don't like visiting Gotham City anymore, cause I literally used to live there. Ty the Guy. On 1/20/07,

This
certainly makes sense Ty.
I was a lot more fond of POTA prior to my
joining, and running, these groups.
I am a lot better informed now, but that
is certainly not necessarily a good thing!

Here's my two
cents on this very subject. It might be too unique an experience to help,
but it's one I have experience with.
I'm as much of a fan of pop culture as I am a purveyor of it. I've seen
all five hundred Star Trek episodes a dozen times each, I've probably read more
Batman comics than anyone alive and I've devoted too much energy in getting
every issue of Marvel's Avengers titles, and putting them in lovely bags and
boards in my house. I've recorded every Simpsons and adored darn near each one
of them. I owned a set of the Apes movies for twenty years, and watch all
five in a week, as an annual ritual in the summer. As part of my job,
I've ended up working on NEARLY all these properties professionally, and I am
thrilled that I got to, but it comes with a price. Your fandom goes out
the window.
I'm always mentally taking notes when watching the Simpsons, studying the
dialogue and the rhythms. I get jealous of good ideas that the other writers
come up with, rather than simply enjoying them. After five years of
writing Batman comics, I completely stopped reading them for years, and now
rarely glance at them. I didn't even SEE the recent Superman movie,
something people who know me can't believe. And as for POTA, I must have
watched Escape and Conquest ten times or more in the space of six months, and I
probably won't do my Apes festival for years now.
A couple of months ago, I was asked if I wanted to work on the new Star Trek
comic series.
I declined. HELL no.
The thing that appeals to the fan in me is to visit a world that's FAR away
from the world I live in. To GO to Ape City, or Gotham, or the Enterprise
in my mind is the best part of the experience. If I get too involved in
actually creating these environments, or make too much of my day about living
there, then they no longer are pleasant escapes.
I don't like visiting Gotham City anymore, cause I literally used to live
there.
Ty the Guy.

This is one of the more active groups i belong to,which says
something considering the age of the subject matter!!
Everyone loves your art and Whiity's writing but judging by
the regular threats to stop your comics unless you get feedback it just seems a
tad like fishing for compliments.
Is it for real this time ?
I personally love your new strip, and have loved all of

do it entirely off your own bat,no ones asked you and

I really like that story.
I like Neil’s art for it too, but it
has a different feel to it. Predictably, I much prefer the “BTB”
and “GOING HOME” style of art (detailed, true to life) to the Zira’s
Horse style.
I’m seriously hoping Neil continues
to do this story.
We did start on a WITHIN style strip “Apes
Playing Cards” – but that was really to get people discussing and
not a soul said they liked it or liked the idea or otherwise, so that’s
defeating the purpose.

Let me quickly respond to that by saying I don't think I ever lost my fondness for these characters and properties, but rather, I lost my need to visit the original experience as much.
Not quite the same, and not quite as bad. The original movies, comics and episodes just printed onto my DNA, that's all.
Another of my grotesque lifelong fandoms is Beatlemania. As a teenager, I played every record until too scratchy to play, and bought another one then played that into the ground, then bought a third copy so I
could learn to play all the rythm guitar and baselines, then I'd buy a Japanese copy, just to sit on the shelf, because it came with better packaging, with extra pictures.
Nowadays if I want to have a Beatle moment, I put on one of the later Harrison or McCartney albums or I listen to the remix "LOVE" or something. It's not that I lose my fondness for the
original material, but I tend to burn out on things. My fondness never goes away. As much as I don't think I'll play my original five POTA movies (now six, in my ritual since it came out, I know
people hate that I don't hate that movie!), but if they ever make ANOTHER one, I'll be fighting people to see it. I think I enjoy the sense of newness with art and fantasy. (Although I mentioned I
hadn't seen the new Superman movie, I went out and bought it today, just to get over my snark about it.)
I wasn't implying it was a bad thing to overload on Apes or Beatles or Batman. Just that it came with a balance, very Ying/Yang. The candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long, grasshopper.

I don't like visiting Gotham City anymore, cause I literally used to live
there.
Ty the Guy.

Looked pretty good though and I am going

this is the sort of thing that annoys me. The story that you call
"lame" was written by Lord T. At least he got off his arse and had a

This might come out like a bit of a ramble, so bear with me but I've been watching this discussion for the last few days and I got a few minutes to actually put some thoughts together, not
necessarily in the right order mind you but...
John's statment goes double for me, On the "other" group I tend just to lurk. As he says over analyzing Star Trek debates aren't really my cup of tea.
When the group works for me it's fun, it even can make me laugh !!
(where else am I going to get called a pom !! )
It's a shame that the burden of doing stuff falls on to such a few people but isn't that the nature of the beast.
As most of you know I run my own business (which is one reason why I don't do as much as I'd like, never mind anyone else) when we do direct targeted advertising we normally get a 1.5 %
pick up which is about par for the course and I see this as very similar most people aren't, for what ever reason, motivated .
Which is why, when some one shares some things I try and acknowledge them,
because they've actually completed some thing and had the guts to show other people but I know I miss some things.
I sympathize with Neil, I know how many man hours goes into most comic pages, we've both swop E-mails with each other in the past expressing our wish just to be able to complete things
quicker.
It would also be good if there was more outlets for stuff, I know I've got a few pics that I'd like used some where but at the present that's looking unlikely... It does make you think
"why bother..."
On finding things to discuss , may be we should just see where the chips fall, I know I wander off topic some times but should we be hung up on this, if we've all discussed the circular time
line so often do we need to do it again? (Probably!!)
I tend to write more when Apes starts a topic but opens the debate / discussion on to something else.
Every time Ape comics are mentioned it's good to widen the debate to include other work, Dario's topic from awhile back about Kirby and his comic Kamandi was a good example.
We've all got different back grounds and interests which just happen to intersect at POTA, we might even learn some things of each other !!!
Back to what John said this group was / is fun, I lurked for along time when their was a lot of back and forth with the other group and I still tend to stop posting when there's a bit of
trolling going on, I'm too old and ugly to play those games.
I hope here remains a place where I can come for a few minutes break and a breather (and still get called a pom!!)
Neil if it's any help to you, I've noticed that the home page pic has been the same for a day or so, if it would relieve any burden off your self (Probably the least of it I know) you
can always use some of my work, if you feel that it needs to be freshened up any, I 'm sure other artist on the group would make the same offer.
I've not offered something like this before because I don't want to step on anyones toes.
As John says really hope this isn't the end, I mean it wasn't that many months ago that the board was active, full of discussion, Michael was calling people poms and England was winning the
ashes, I'm sure it can be like that again (well apart from the cricket )
As always best wishes Graham.
