I sent you an e-mail a couple of days ago about contributing some
artwork to the Chronicles - I haven't heard back from you just yet so
I decided it was best to post a heads-up here, as well.
My name is Brad Smith, my e-mail is BSmith@....
Thanks! <.html

.html This may seem like a silly question, but I'm looking for more
information on the Simian glyphs. Is there a databank where I may be
able to look at all of the recorded symbols? Have they been given
meanings or anything like that? Something along the lines of Star
Wars' "Aurek-Besh" alphabet?
I'm working on some Apes artwork, that includes some glyphs, and I'd
like to be as accurate as possible. <.html

Probably.
But,
like I said, you guys are the TEST AUDIENCE anyway so the feedback is
appreciated.
You
would rather we share as we go right?

I think having the
story so spread out over time made it hard to stay
with it and get what you were trying to put across. Maybe once its
all put together and can be read as a solid story it will be easier
to follow.

Because the piece is so large, the image is quad-scanned, which is why
it may look somewhat blurry or sectioned, or even photoshopped. It's
actually white and black prisma pencils on an orange canvas - one of
my favorite pieces for some reason. The likeness isn't all that great,
but I like it.
I'm pretty sure the glyphs are fairly accurate, too - I used a screen
comparison and kept the Sideshow statue at hand, as well.

of the glyphs and what they each mean and stand for, before using any
of them in my designs. I guess it'd be the equivalent of one of these
young American kids getting a chinese symbol tattoo'd on their
shoulder without any research - not knowing that it was the symbol
for, "Hamburger" or something like that.
The Apes used written english, the glyphs were just decorative I
imagine, so I always have that to fall back, I guess.
Being a Star Wars fan, I'm used to Expanded Universe detailing even
the most minor thing, so it's good to hear there's a free reign for Apes. <.html

Hmm. I always wondered how the ape letters changed from standard English to
the glyphs. Remember, in BATTLE the apes are learning to write in English. Does
Virgil have the glyphs on his clothes? I dont think so... I wonder when and why
they swtiched over from letters?

I've always assumed, or at least imagined, that both languages existed
at the same time. Obviously, English pre-dates Simian Glyph, so
somehow the Apes kept the language alive as their own.
Perhaps the glyphs aren't ancient at all, but are instead just as made
up as the Simian scrolls themselves? If you've ever seen 'The
Village', it's sort of the same deal. <.html

Don't know how
many already knew this but whilst searching for other stuff I accidentally
stumbled across the identity of the person who designed the Planet of the Apes
logo:
Type designer Ed Benguiat
Master typographer Ed Benguiat
is one of the most
important font and logo designers in the modern era of design and publishing. He
has created the lettering used in logotypes for the New York Times,
Sports Illustrated, Esquire, and Playboy. He designed
such typefaces as Avant Garde Gothic and
Caslon, which you probably have
installed on your computer as you read this. (For you
typophiles out there, House Industries has a font collection
tribute to Ed Benguiat you may be
interested in.)
Edward Benguiat
also produced type
used in movie posters, including logos for Planet of the Apes
and
Super Fly. It's interesting how a
good logo can elevate a poster for films about those or a 70s cocaine . This is
especially true in the case of the for
Super Fly, which gives the
wonderfully "swashy" Benguiat logo the prominence it deserves.
Blaxploitation never looked so
good.

***I could just murder the people in charge of MSN dial-up services. Twice the bastards have disconnected me from the internet before I've had a chance to finish and send replies to this message
regarding the Glyphs. They're "sorry for the inconvenience"... Sorry, my ass!
Well, here goes again...
In my own POTA-project's scenario, I try to link a bunch of different details presented in the movies & TV episodes in ways that were certainly not intended by the dudes at APJAC, but which lends
itself to it.
In BATTLE, we have an "old" orangutan who is depicted as being even older than Caesar – Mandemus. If Mandemus had been conceived before
the arrival of the Ape-onauts, how did he come to be one of the "evolved" apes?
Could the conception of Mandemus have anything to do with the Glyphs, by any chance?
In my scenario, the U.S. Army intelligence people became aware of the possibility that a group of Nazis – perhaps even Hitler himself – may have fled the Fatherland in Europe for a "Last
Redoubt"... a secret base located on the all-but-inaccessible continent of Antarctica (which the Nazis had claimed for the Third Reich in the late 1930's).
Captain George Taylor of the U.S.A.A.F. takes part in a top-secret mission, an invasion of Nazi-occupied Antarctica, in the winter of 1946-to-1947 (when it's summer in the southern hemisphere).
Operation HIGHJUMP prepares the way, setting up a launch site on Little America in the Ross Sea [80d South, 163d West]; while the fleet of Navy ships splits into two – one going eastward, the other going westward
around Antarctica's coastline – the squadron of bombers which fly to the prepped airstrip at Little America refuel and fly over the South Pole (hence the name of the airstrike team: Operation POLE VAULT). Both the
Naval forces and the U.S.A.A.F. forces are to converge on the site of Neuschwabenland
(the name the Nazis gave to Antarctica territory where it is thought that they built a secret base: an underground city called Neu Berlin
, situated on the same longitude as the original Berlin in Germany at 52.31 degrees North). Hasslein alludes to this attempt to kill Hitler in "ESCAPE"...
While flying over Antarctica, Taylor and his crew (in a B-52 named the "Taylor Maid"... with appropriate nosecone art: a sexy woman in a French maid's outfit) encounter "foo
fighter"-type vehicles... flying saucers, if you will. As a result of their "close encounter" the U.S. military becomes aware of the presence of "alien" beings dwelling in a secret base of their
own in Antarctica. After dealing with the Nazi threat at Neu Berlin, the U.S. military prepares to send out survey teams to the Antarctica sites where those "foo fighters" were seen... prompting the beings
flying them to abandon their base in Antarctica.
A few months later, there's the "Roswell" incident. The crash of a flying disc – which was reported in the newspapers in an official press release by the Army Air Force base, before it was
subsequently covered up. Two major lines of investigation are begun:
1) The exotic technology is examined – back-engineered by a team of scientists including Dr. Otto Hasslein, so that ultimately they can develop it for America's top-secret military space program:
A.N.S.A., the American Nearlight Stardrive Agency.
2) The nature of the "aliens" is studied. Eventually, it is discovered that these short, thin, grey-skinned beings (called "the Greys") are not aliens at all. Rather, they are a
separate branch of hominids, sharing a common ancestor with Humans, Chimpanzees, Gorillas, and Orangutans – a "concestor" which lived ten million years ago.
A group of true extraterrestrials had come from a planet orbiting a star which was once only a few lightyears away from Sol -- at least it was 10 MYA ("Million Years Ago"). The aliens from that
other system had taken some of the population of Protopithecoids up to a hermetically-sealed site on the Moon and, through a process of selective breeding, morphed that original Protopithecoid into the species of Greys.
The skin adapted to the same color or hue as the lunar dust and rocks – grey. Their bodies, adapted to lunar gravity (1/6th
that of Earth), came to be thin and strong enough to carry a big head on a thin neck. They could only endure short intervals back on Earth, later on... since they weigh 6 times their normal weight here.
Eventually, the Aliens left the Solar System, leaving behind the race of Greys on the Moon, with sufficient technology at their disposal to make periodic trips down to Earth to replenish the artificial
lunar habitat with water, air, essential minerals, etc. Hence, the base in Antarctica, which had remained out of the realm of human knowledge until World War II.
The UFO wreckage recovered from the Mac Brazel ranch near Roswell included struts which were adorned with certain figures which Jessie Marcel said resembled hieroglyphs
. I'm having it that the Greys spoke a language which resembles ancient Sumerian a bit, and which used glyph-symbols much as the Egyptians did, though the Grey-glyphs are not
Egyptian-based.
When the Greys fled their Antarctica base, most of them returned to their home on the Moon, but some of them didn't have the wherewithal to do so... so they fled to certain places on Earth where they
hoped they could hide. Central Africa and Indonesia.
There, they used their scientific know-how to perform experiments on the primitive apes living there. Transgenics... the alteration of a genome by the introduction of genes from other species.
Specifically, they alter simian DNA in such a way as to make a hybrid trio of species in which each individual would have a larger and more complex brain in which a Grey could telepathically transfer its own Mind.
The "evolved" apes were thus created... but the Greys were unsuccessful in their attempt to `hijack' the minds of the hybrids. For brief times they could "possess" them, but the ape
minds would eventually reject them, the way somebody with an organ transplant tends to reject a transplanted organ.
With their plans foiled, the Greys stuck around long enough to teach the first generation of evolved apes at least a certain amount of their own "holy" language. Those later ape names which were
not given by human slave-masters (Frank, Lisa, Aldo, etc) and/or based on Greco-Roman civilization (Virgil, Honorius,
Maximus, Cornelius, etc) were from this original "God"-given ape language. Names like Zako, Nima, Elta
, Urko, Veska, etc.
When the Pet Plague left Man without pets, he first took monkeys and infant
apes as pets. Later, when they ran out of those, they started taking adult
apes as pets, which required the Ape Management conditioning procedures. These adult (and evolved) apes were fluent in the "holy" language... but they had been warned not to speak in the presence of
humans. However, at those "unauthorized ape gatherings" mentioned by the Watch Commander, those apes would whisper amongst each other, not knowing the meaning of the English spoken around them.
ANSA had discovered that the star system from which the Aliens came (10 MYA) had receded from our Solar System over the course of those tens of millions of years at a rate of about one lightyear every
32,000 years. In our present time, that means that the Solar System – orbiting the galactic center faster than that other star system – has passed ahead of it some 320 lightyears. It is believed that the Aliens who
created the Greys later returned to their homeworld... taking with them various species of Earth-based life. Thus, when the mission is sent out by ANSA to that faraway star system in the constellation Orion, Taylor
isn't surprised to find Humans (albeit mute ones), Apes (albeit talking ones), and Horses. The ANSA personnel on the Orion Mission perhaps expected
to find Earth-based life flourishing on it.
When the Greys taught the evolved apes their own language, they also told them where in "heaven" the throne of "God" dwells: the Star that represents the Head of Orion (or, the
Eye in the head of Orion). The Supreme Ruler of the Universe, then, is believed to reside at a specific place in the night sky.
Aldo's poncho (when not worn, and spread onto a flat surface) is a CIRCLE-shaped item studded with round studs, which represent the stars in the skies of the northern hemisphere. There is a hole in the
center through which Aldo sticks his head. And, there is a GLYPH on it. The glyph is situated right on the circular edge, below his neck, representing the position of Orion on the Celestial Equator.
My take on this poncho/collar, then, is that the Glyph represents the constellation Orion
, the topmost part of the glyph representing the Star where the Throne of God is believed to be. The supreme rulership over all apes is signified by the wearing of that poncho, since it evokes the Supreme Ruler
of the Universe... the God whose "angels" (the Greys) were the go-between Makers of the Apes.
When Aldo put that poncho on, he was declaring that he – and not Caesar
– was now the Supreme Ruler of the Apes. That it was the Will of God that He be represented (militarily) by the wearer of that bit of regalia. Prior to this, Caesar had forbidden "General" Aldo from
wearing that item – and the other apes in Ape City had supported Caesar in this. Aldo, however, after the attack on his gorilla sentries, believes that it is his right and duty to declare Martial Law... to don the
regalia of Supreme Rulership and take up the task of militarily defending his people from invading humans. And, with this crisis at hand, Aldo gambles on having sufficient support from the frightened ape population to
override any objections from Caesar's partisans.
"Caesar... is not here!"
So somebody has to step up to the plate, and that somebody is Aldo.
Patrick
P.S. Keep in mind, folks, that this scenario was not
intended by the folks at APJAC and was cooked up by me for the sake of my own POTA-project. It ain't canon for anybody but me.

I think you will find it’s
a budget thing (like the length of the fur on chins etc).
The glyphs cost time and effort to
construct – so they got shelved.
The only reason they used the PLANET costumes
is to save money – they were still hanging around so they were used.

We're trying to get all of the APES radio spots collected... So far Chris has BENEATH thru BATTLE covered I believe, and he may have a contact who has the stuff from PLANET (but that guy is dragging
his feet getting back to him about it...)
Also, we're trying to get any APES related/inspired songs, etc. too... Neil was nice enough to contribute a few things on that end, and again Chris has some others already (and I think the APES SHUFFLE is among
them...)
If you have any of this type of material, contact me or Chris L. privately...

Issue 118 is now available to download from Hunter's site. The figures promised last week can now be printed, cut-out and placed in front of last week's backdrop.
This week's issue has chapters in the continuing Battle and Beneath adaptations, as well as a letter column. Careful readers may be able to determine by checking the length of each adaptation segment to
determine which one will conclude in the upcoming final issue 123 and which will continue into the Mighty World of Marvel issues, which we'll also be posting. Thanks, Greg <.html

I refuse to resort to inventing people as

I’ve had another change in roles at

Whitty, you mean Chief Councilor Zaius don't you? (After all, he is NOT "Dr." Zaius on the TV series!)
Anyway, yes, in the TV series Zaius does have hieroglyphics on his outfits... He is of high authority after all...
And poor Galen, had he only kept his nose clean, I'm sure he would have ended up with some type of ornamentation too (if he would have become the assistant to Zaius that is...)

Wasn’t someone
recently executed for discussing circular vs linear?!?!? ;)
I’ll re-state what I said about it:
It does not blatantly say that it was
(what we refer to as) a circular timeline, where Zira and Cornelius’ descendants
will meet Z&C in 39fity-something.
And what an incredible mess these sequels
were in their rush to cash in on the original!
