I write all my stuff that way, so I can't be held

interested in finishing just maybe it could
be posted without the pictures.  Then if

I dunno.  I wouldn't be surprised it they
aired it on ESPN.  I've seen some
pretty strange filler on late at
night.  I'm not sure that the
genres they assign hold
up any more.  I can't
believe some of the
movies on AMC.
Classics they ain't!

The tricky thing was the compostion, tall and thin but I think it works ok.

I had a idea of doing a set of 4 but that petered out, there is talk of Scrolls using it as a free gift  (not sure if I should mention that or not ... oh well too late now)

The Dr Galen X-mas card was going to be the second bookmark but I ended up chopping the top off and knocking up the card.

Best Wishes Graham.

*** In "BATTLE" MacDonald did some detective work at the crime scene
where Cornelius had suffered his mortal injuries. Remember when he
waves his hand over the embers of the fire? That tells him how long
ago those embers have been smoldering (i.e. since the time of
the "incident") -- meaning that Cornelius wasn't alone when he fell.

Then he yanks down the branch off of which the young chimp fell...
and he notices the chop-marks in it -- obviously made from a cutting
implement. When Virgil laments, "How could a benevolent God allow a
branch from one of His trees to break..." (etc etc), MacDonald tells
him that the branch didn't just BREAK... it was CUT. This evidence is
used against Aldo at the crucial moment, when Virgil remarks, "Ape
has never killed ape... let alone an ape child. The branch did not
break... it was cut -- by a sword. Aldo has killed an ape child."

Then there's the TV series.

In "THE SURGEON" Galen and Burke commit a burglary: posing as medical
personnel called to Zaius' home (where Zaius has supposedly suffered
a heart attack), they get inside... Burke jimmies open Zaius' locked
bookshelf-cabinet to get the surgery book written by Dr. Mather...
and they steal the statue of an orangutan named 'Doswa' (the name
given by Effinger in his novelization), pretending that it is Zaius.

When Urko is called to Zaius' home to investigate this matter, he
eventually gets Zaius to tell him what KIND of book had been
stolen... and when he discovers it was a book on SURGERY, he knows
enough to go to the hospital.

Not too shabby detective work on the part of Urko. As the Chief of
Security, he evidently is the "top cop" in Central City. He's not
stupid, either. Remember in "THE TRAP" when he finds the artifacts in
the Miller home... "The one called Virdon... he would want to
investigate this," he says.

A fine deduction, which proves (of course) to be correct.

Glad you like them John, I do come from a fine art back ground, abstract and semi-abstract, so it's probably that you've pick up on.

With the ape pics I do have to be careful in the sense that the things I find interesting might not be what a POTA fan does if you see what I mean.

With this home page pic you can probably tell that I knocked out the gorilla pretty quickly because the thing that interested me and the bit I worked on , was the background.

I'm trying to pay more attention to the figure work as with most of my pictures the colour sort of pulls things together, the problem being when / if  the pics are printed this usually throws the colours out of wack  and highlights the dodgy figure drawing, the Urko Scrolls cover suffered a bit from this.

So more time  on drawing and the underpainting but still trying to keep it quite loose and lively

Best Graham.

I think of those covers as the natural successors to the old pulp magazine covers ,Doc Savage etc.

Most of the painters of them, in the 30's and 40's, came from a fine art back ground, looking for work in the depression. I'm thinking of people like Norm' saunders and John Walter Scott who had really loose gutsy styles that got more so under the deadline pressure.

They brought a lot of "high art" teqniques to low art, at a time when the subject matter ("Spicy Detective stories")  was seen as "trash"

Best Graham.

Hi Dario,
The originals do vary but this one was about 33 cm by 50 odd cm (It's
somewhere in the corner of the studio, which my partner has started to
call the "Forbidden Zone" because of the mess, I claim it's just a
working studio !!! )
I'd paint bigger but I've got enough problem with the scanner as it
is !!!
Again each one takes differant times to paint but 20 painting hours
would be round about.
Best,Graham.

Yeah, tried a few times but never been keen, just like the "depth" of
oils.
The funny thing is I did paint quite abit with water colours when I was
a student so I'm used to building up layers there, just never came too
terms with acrylics...Plastic you see, far too modern...

Hi Michael, I take it the cover needs to be in the same proportions as a modern comic ?

In the meantime go to the Home Page and enjoy the cropped version:

Hi Dario,
The originals do vary but this one was about 33 cm by 50 odd cm (It's
somewhere in the corner of the studio, which my partner has started to
call the "Forbidden Zone" because of the mess, I claim it's just a
working studio !!! )
I'd paint bigger but I've got enough problem with the scanner as it
is !!!
Again each one takes differant times to paint but 20 painting hours
would be round about.
Best,Graham.

Yep, used the card for the gorilla, with a bit of tweaking for the
position of the head and shoulders (some change on the legs because of
the reflected light)
As I said to John my real interest in the picture was the back ground
so I bashed out the figure far to quickly and sort of got to the point
where I should have made changes but it was all a bit too late :)
Really not happy with the face, I like the background though !!

You know Michael, it's funny you should mention that...

I had thought about printing one of Neil's pages very lightly on to board and just painting  over it like I would my own underpaintings as an experiment, I've never work on other peoples stuff,so I don't know if it would work...

I don't know how well you're up with modern comics but there's an artist called Alex Ross who does painted work ,at the moment he's doing the exact same thing, painting over some one elses pencils to produce work quicker, (He had been doing one 48 page book a year, by himself  but felt this meant he was out of sight in a comercial sense for far too long .)

The pair are managing a 24 page bi-monthly comic.

So it's a possibility (Wouldn't have to worry about the figure work :))

Best,Graham.

You'll have to put some pictures up John I'd love to see them.
It's funny when it comes to comics,I love people like Bruce Timm, Daryn
Cooke, all these cartoony (Never like to use that word but you know
what I mean) artists yet when it comes to my own work my natural
instincts go almost in the opposite direction.
There's a graphic novel out called "Rocketo" by a guy who's worked in

I have a pencil for an idea of a more dark and violent ape concept in

they need to look the way I remember them and I've never been able to
be comfortable with the way they turn out for me. Neil's ruined any
ideas of pursuing the apes as an art outlet. ;)

He certainly works at it !!!

Nearly all his paintings as you say John are based on live models, he
has a certain one for Superman, an other for Green Lantern...

I sort of relate to the process, he seems to have to go through certain
hoops, he does rough break downs, then it's into the photographic studio
to get all the reference... so a very long process but it does produce
good work ... just quite slow.

Bruce Timm from the Justice league / Batman animated show is always
giving him grief about what a strung out way he has of doing comics.

Best Graham.

I'd also like to get a bit more bold with apes but as you say the child

I tried oils once or twice but never really liked them myself (probably too impatient to have to wait for them to dry I think. I first 'learnt to paint' using watercolours and that is one of the reasons I now use acrylics, as I can use them as if they are watercolours.

Timm and Cooke's style have a way of making comics look ... well .. like comics should look. As for apes art work, the absolute best illustrator of simians in comics is the great Carmine Infantino. His work on the "Detective Chimp" series in the fifties is beautiful. And don't forget his Gorilla Grodd from The Flash.

I've really "gone off" this painting since seeing it printed (No
offence meant at all to the Scoll guys, it was cool that they used
it !!! but I seem to remember that they printed from a hard copy I'd

If I find it I might try and play with it some more.

    Thanks, Neil.

Just a thought: I've pondered (every so often) the notion that the
two fields of literature -- Sci Fi and the Detective novel -- are
birds of the same feather, that they both came about due to similar
underpinnings. The best SF novels have good science in them, often
extrapolating on current trends in Science in order to imagine where
Science may PLAUSIBLY take us in the Future... and in order for
Science itself to be considered "good" it has to pass the ultimate
test: the Scientific Method. The use of pure Reason to make sense of
data gathered in a foolproof manner.

This is what makes the Detective Novel genre so similar: a Detective
is a kind of Scientist, using his or her REASONING abilities to make
sense of data -- the "clues" that lead to him/her solving the puzzle.

Think of Taylor in Cornelius' cave... using his knowledge of 20th
Century state-of-the-art technology to deduce the nature of the pre-
Simian Human culture which bequeathed its own civilization to the
ancestors of Zaius, et al. The Apes didn't seem to have any idea of
the possibility (let alone the actuality) of artificial heart valves,
false teeth, etc. [Although Wanda, in "THE INTERROGATION" did wear a
    pair of glasses...]

Taylor, examining those artifacts, makes some reasonable deductions
about the humans who lived lo, those 2,000 or so years prior to the
events of "PLANET". "He was a weak, fragile animal... but he was here
before you... and he was BETTER than you are!"

Although Zaius claimed that he, too, could offer up an "alternate
explanation" for those artifacts which would be just as ingenious as
the one Taylor came up with -- and he sounds just like a religious
fanatic proponent of Creationism [so-called "Intelligent Design"]
trying to explain away the fossil record -- but such an explanation
would be (he says) CONJECTURE... not proof.

And then the nail-in-the-coffin makes its presence known: the Doll.
The TALKING human doll... the "clue" that solves the mystery. And
they all know it. That's why Zaius, ultimately, decides to have the
Cave (and all its artifacts) dynamited. Zaius is merely the latest
culprit in a twenty-century-long conspiracy to foist (and then
maintain) a fraud upon the simian citizens of Ape City. In other
words, a CRIME... and the detective (Taylor) solves it.

Too bad he didn't have the authority (or power) to bring the
perpetrator to justice. And Zaius, putting Cornelius under arrest
(forcibly silenced), ain't about to allow THAT to happen.

Yes... both the Detective (or Mystery) Novel and the SF Novel share
the trait whereby a protagonist uses REASON to get to the Truth.
Unlike a Fantasy novel (where "magic" can turn the truth into knots
by defying reality) -- and I include supernatural Horror novels in
this other genre -- true SF and Detective Novels rely on the
underlying reality of Nature. Sure, one can readily enjoy a Fantasy
    novel, a Horror novel, a Sword-and-Sorcery story (I myself am a big
fan of the original Robert E. Howard stories of Conan/Kull/Bran Mak
Morn/etc) ... but those stories require a suspension of disbelief,
just as enjoyment of the "pagan" Classics (the Iliad & Odyssey, etc)
require the suspension of disbelief in the existence of the pantheon
of gods like Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, etc. But Detective novels and the
best hard-SF novels don't require such a suspension of disbelief:
they only "work" if the facts in them are reasonable.

Even though I consider the 1968 "PLANET OF THE APES" to be
predominantly a SATIRE, it is satire done within an SF framework, and
that scene in the Cave is the best example of that. Later entries in
the POTA saga -- especially the TV series -- did even more to set it
in a specifically SF framework. When Virdon and Burke re-introduce
Scientific and Technological ways to improve the living conditions of
the humans and apes they meet in their journeys, that goes to the
    very heart of the matter.

Not to mention the fact that they expose fraud -- 31st Century
debunkers similar to James Randi and Penn & Teller in our times --
in "THE LIBERATOR", making use of their scientific knowledge. They
also help to correct mistaken beliefs (in "THE CURE", "THE GOOD
SEEDS", in almost every episode, come to think about it!).

Science -- the Scientific Method -- trumps Superstition and
Ignorance, every time. That's what makes the Astronauts such a danger
to the Zaiuses and Urkos of the planet of the apes. The top eschelon
of Simian Civilization relies on Superstition and Ignorance to keep
not only the Humans in their place... but to keep the masses of Apes
from overthrowing their leadership in favor of a better, more
equitable one. To paraphrase Urko: "THERE is the danger!"

DC should have always let Carmine ink his own work, that lovely impressionistic line of his... damn their "commercial sense"

Beautiful is the right word !!!

    Best wishes Graham.

Well I have discussed this with THADERULES and he was referring to a
map that Glen has posted on the POTA group.

Frankly, I think the map is pretty darned cool.

If anyone wishes to post it you will see what I mean - a lot of
thought and effort went into it and I can't imagine why someone would
    want to pizzle this!

    Please be more thoughtful people.
