Cougar, there is a difference between the ability to feel PAIN and the ability to THINK. When PETA (or whoever) equates a Rat and a Pig with a Boy, they're (probably) talking about the PAIN such animals suffer
being comparable. If they are talking about the capacity to THINK (rationally, presumably), then they are not
in their "right minds" as I said. Pain is caused by the activation of neurons in the dermis, is it not? And rats and pigs have such pain-receptor nerves, do they not? Therefore, they FEEL PAIN whenever
labs perform tests on them that they are not allowed to do on HUMAN test subjects.
Remember when the Chairman of the Presidential Commission refers to Zira's "atrocities"... and then compares them to what Humans today (i.e. in 1973) were doing to "beasts"... and, in
Zira's world, MAN IS CONSIDERED NOTHING BUT A BEAST. "Beware the BEAST Man..."
Groups like PETA want animals to be treated ETHICALLY -- the "E" in PETA. They don't believe [or, I hope
they don't!] that animals like Rats and Pigs can actually THINK on the same level as a Human Being. It is their ability to feel PAIN that makes them sympathetic, and worthy of ethical treatment, and not of the
cruel treatment that they often suffer.

Your comparison to Clydesdales and farm animals is, quite frankly, disingenuous. Nobody in their right mind believes that horses, cows,
(etc) are cognitively comparable to a human being.
*** Oh really now? Then how come there's one group (actually PETA I believe) that has a saying that goes something like "A rat is a pig is a boy" meaning to them EVERYTHING is "equal" ...

As an
aside, you should check out the 1959 Hammer film: The Abominable Snowman. This

Believe me, it would be much easier if Mandemus hadn't said that
line of dialogue! It would be easier to place BATTLE about 12 years or so
after CONQUEST [ i.e. in 2003 or 2004], having Mendez's line about "twelve
years of peace" refer to the 12 years following a Nuke War that almost
immediately occurred after the events of CONQUEST.
*** Yes, but exactly what gives you the indication that the "twelve
years of peace" are almost "immediately" after the events of CONQUEST... There
could have been the nuclear war, etc., and then between that event and the
events of BATTLE, who knows how many other skirmishes occurred between the
(mutant) humans and the apes?
I mean the let's go by your scenario and say the war was in 2004..
Does that automatically place BATTLE in 2016? No... I mean there could have been
years in-between the events where they were battling over territory,
food, etc., etc., and then they may have decided to come to some sort of truce,
both sides being tired of the battling... Plus, Lisa has that line when she
tells Caesar "You were trespassing on their territory" so during their "peace
talks," they may have agreed that the humans could "have" the city...(And yes, I
know Caesar says he didn't know was inhabited so he may have thought the mutants
were dead, having lived in an "uninhabitable"city, who knows... I am just making
that up after all.) ***
But Mandemus' line makes it mandatory to place BATTLE some 27 years after
CONQUEST. Because that dialogue is in the film, it's canon as far as
I'm concerned. You'll notice that David Gerrold, in his novelization of
BATTLE, refers to the founding of Ape City "nine years" before the events of
the film [Chapter One, page 12 of the paperback]. Gerrold also has Mendez
telling Kolp: "If we shoot them... we break years of peace." In the film,
Mendez refers to "TWELVE YEARS of peace." Gerrold has Mandemus say, "Caesar, I
must ask a favor. This armory has been my home for many, many years." In the
film, Mandemus says "for TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS."
*** And thank God for Gerrold to have the right idea to drop those
"numbers"... I wish ALL of them (the films and novels) had been more ambiguous
as to years/dates... It'd make things a lot easier and, in some cases, much more
palatable... *** It's only a deal if it's where you

Hunter,
I recently submitted a planet of the apes parody t-shirt to a t-shirt contest on www.torsopants.com and I won. I don't receive commissions if they sell more or less of them. I created the shirt since I'm a big
POTA fan and thought you might be the guy to share it with, who could let other fans know about it.
thanks

It does have a POTA connection. The creator is an Apes fan. He's a Japanese billionaire, who's also a rapper, and his house is basically a museum for his toy
collection. Unfortunately, most of the BAPE stuff you see for sale are cheap knockoffs. The chances of getting real BAPE stuff are Slim & None and Slim just left town. The coolest thing about his
house, aside from the walls being glass cases full of the coolest toys on the planet was the fact that he could drive his super car into his house, and then back out the other side without turning or backing up.

Cougar, I said it WOULD be easier, ignoring the "12 years of peace" and "27 years" Armory bit, to re-chronologize the Post-CONQUEST timeline, having the Nuke War follow CONQUEST
within the year (either late 1991 or early 1992) and then have there be period of about a decade or 12 years follow, with BATTLE taking place, say, in 2003 or 2004. It all depends on when the Nuke War takes place, and
they never did exactly nail that date down in the Films or Episodes
.] There could have been the nuclear war, etc., and then between that event and the events of BATTLE, who knows how many other skirmishes occurred between the (mutant) humans and the apes? [

my scenario has the Nuke War in 2006, and BATTLE in 2018. In my If-I-Could-Ignore-The-Onscreen-Numbers
bit, I said it would be easier if the war -- the Nuke War -- happened SOON AFTER the events of CONQUEST, in 1991-1992, so that BATTLE would be in 2003-2004.] No... I mean there could have been years

I think it's evident that Caesar -- before his journey to the Forbidden City -- assumes
that everyone who had been in that city perished when the Nuke(s) hit it. When MacDonald brings up the idea of those Archive tapes, Caesar says, "But the Bomb left nothing!"
... and MacDonald reminds him that the lower levels of the city were designed to withstand a nuclear overblast... which convinces Caesar that those Tapes COULD BE THERE STILL.
It isn't until they go to the Armory with Virgil -- to get the guns and the geiger counter -- that it is mentioned that the radioactive city MAY still be inhabited. I suspect that it was Virgil
who suggested this to Caesar when he was told about this mission. Virgil would've been the one to suggest bringing along a geiger counter (being the only one of the three who knew how to "read" it and
interpret the radioactivity level); and Virgil also would've been the one to tell Caesar that in spite of the fact that a nuke had hit that city, it could also be inhabited still -- provided that the survivors were
in the lower levels of the city and could seal off those sections from the radioactive-contaminated upper levels. I doubt if Caesar would've even thought to bring along any weapons on that journey had it not been
for Virgil's recommendation.
Because of Caesar's initial assumption that the Bomb left "nothing"... I think it's clear that there weren't any post-Nuke skirmishes between the city's humans and
Caesar's apes.
Think about it: before the Bomb wiped out the city (or, at least, its surface and upper levels), there had to have been some warning that War was in progress. You know... air-raid sirens, those old
Emergency Broadcast signals on TV... stuff like that. Some of the humans had to have fled from that city and made it beyond the dangerous perimeter of the Blastzone... since there are Humans in Caesar's "Ape
City" in BATTLE. Humans who were kept in a subservient position because they had once been the "masters" -- i.e. they were from Breck's city and not from some area which didn't enslave Apes (that
is, the Provinces). It was the humans from Breck's city who had electrically conditioned the Apes to cringe from the "No" command. Not the humans who lived in the Provinces. Yet Caesar had to make a law --
the "First Law" -- that humans may never again say "No" to an ape. Caesar would never have been justified in making that law if the humans he ruled over were innocent of the Ape Slavery sin. It was
their guilt for having participated in the Slavery that tainted Breck's city that made Caesar's "First Law" justified... at least as it pertained to the Adult humans. One could argue that the children
born since the Nuke War shouldn't be punished for the sins of their parents; it's obvious that Cornelius wouldn't have had Aldo's reaction to hearing a human say "No!" to him, since Cornelius
never suffered the Conditioning tortures at APE MANAGEMENT.

> [Chapter One, page 12 of the paperback]. Gerrold also has Mendez telling Kolp: "If > we shoot them... we break years of peace." In the film, Mendez refers to
> "TWELVE YEARS of peace." Gerrold has Mandemus say, "Caesar, I must ask a favor. > This armory has been my home for many, many years." In the film, Mandemus says
> "for TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS." > > *** And thank God for Gerrold to have the right idea to drop those
> "numbers"... I wish ALL of them (the films and novels) had been more ambiguous as to > years/dates... It'd make things a lot easier and, in some cases, much more > palatable... ***
________________________________________________________________
*** Well, Gerrold had the "right" to drop the numbers that were spoken onscreen (and, in certain cases, actually scripted), so as to give a new chronology. But his chronology seems
too
truncated to me. Gerrold has BATTLE following CONQUEST by a mere 9 years, presumably with the Nuke War having happened soon after the events of CONQUEST. This would make young Cornelius only about 8 years old,
wouldn't it? I always thought of Cornelius as being about the same age as the human kid he was playing War with, somewhere it seemed to me to be the age of 12 or 13.
But that's all irrelevant, as far as I'm concerned. Whether some like it or not, actual chronological information is presented on-screen -- which makes it canon
, as far as I'm concerned. The BATTLE prologue is said to be in "NORTH AMERICA" in the year 2670. It doesn't tell us the Month, or the Day of that Month, but it narrows it down to 1 out of 365
possible days in that future year!
And Mandemus specifically tells Caesar that the Armory has been his home for 27 years. The absolutely earliest time in which that Armory could've begun to be his home was when Caesar acquired
the ARMS that make up the Armory, and that was in 1991, when CONQUEST takes place. Assuming that Caesar led his freed simian people out of Breck's city to that rather nearby forest location -- and we know it's
nearby since it took only 3 days for the Trio to get there, investigate the Archives, and get back to Ape City for that round-trip -- then Caesar began to store those Arms in that Armory later in the year 1991.
Thus, adding 27 years to 1991 brings us to the year A.D. 2018, which is when BATTLE must take place. Since there has been 12 years of peace up until that date, that means that SOMETHING had to have
happened 12 years earlier, in A.D. 2006, which involved armed conflict.
This may be interpretation on my part, but I think it is logical to conclude that the Nuke War is being referenced here by Mendez. Some 15 years after Caesar and his people escaped from Breck's
city, human civilization was wiped out with nukes, flattening Breck's city and killing him in the bargain.
These chronological nuggets necessitate filling in the blanks in some kind of logical way. I don't think that Caesar would've held off impregnating Lisa, quite frankly. But since Cornelius
in BATTLE is nowhere near 26 or 27 years old, that means that Lisa did not give birth to him anytime soon after CONQUEST. The most logical suggestion I can think of, then, is to suggest that Caesar and Lisa had
other children before they had Cornelius... but those children all had to have died somehow, leaving Caesar with only one child -- his youngest (and now only) son, his heir.
Unlike Gerrold, I'm not gonna pretend that Mandemus didn't specify "27 years" of living in Caesar's Armory, and that Mendez didn't specify "12 years of peace"
(etc). If it's on the screen, it's canon -- period.

By the way...I was being lighthearted and silly. Everyone's sketches are better than mine. I'm a writer and a cartoonist, but Sam and Gabby are very talented illustrators, there's a
huge difference between cartooning and illustrating. There's a reason I hired them both for the series and didn't draw it myself. If I ever do a con sketch that's any good, you'll see the

That's a valid point though about the difference between cartoonist and illustrators.
In comics I suppose it breaks down to ...hm say an Alex Toth school on one hand and on the other lets say Neal Adams
(Just for the sake of the argument, I don't really think Adams is quite as "Photo realistic
" as it's some times stated)
Or in comic strip terms Alex Raymond (or maybe a better example is Hal Foster) on one side, Milton Caniff on the other (!! ? )
Completely different set of skills and more importantly objectives.
Best,Graham.

From the looks of the Blu-ray description I completely agree with you.
I believe all that is posted as "NEW" will be new and in HD Widescreen quality. And the rest, as far as what was released on the "Behind the Planet of the Apes" 2 disc box set will
be in regular DVD quality. But to be quite honest, if all that was released was just the movies in HD, I'd still be happy. You have no idea how long I've been waiting for Planet of the Apes to come out in
HD. Honestly, I thought it was going to take a lot longer than this. So I'm really thrilled. So whatever extras they offer will be an extra treat for me.
It's all good.

Agreed Alex.
And I never thought I would live to see
this version of Conquest…..let alone a version restored for HD!!!
What is there NOT to celebrate????

From the
looks of the Blu-ray description I completely agree with you.
I
believe all that is posted as "NEW" will be new and in HD
Widescreen quality. And the rest, as far as what was released on the
"Behind the Planet of the Apes" 2 disc box set will be in
regular DVD quality. But to be quite honest, if all that was released was just
the movies in HD, I'd still be happy. You have no idea how long I've been
waiting for Planet of the Apes to come out in HD. Honestly, I thought it
was going to take a lot longer than this. So I'm really thrilled. So whatever
extras they offer will be an extra treat for me.
It's all
good.

Speaking of screw-ups . . .
In the Fun Facts of the IMDB it says the original theatrical release had
two moons that were taken out after Beneath was greenlighted. I saw the
original release. There weren't any moons! In fact theym mention
there's always a cloud cover at night. I'm going to challenge that.

**** Now THAT I can see happening... But it's a pretty sad state
when a reviewer doesn't know which entity they just watched... I mean I suppose
someone could get things from the original films mixed up, but to (possibly)
confuse a film from '68 with a film from '01 is just inexcusable... But that's
the way things go in "young Hollywood" these days...

by Donald
Melanson, posted Sep 4th 2008 at 3:43PM
While we can't say if it represents a general sentiment at
Samsung or not, the company's UK director of consumer electronics, Andy
Griffiths, sure went out on a bit of a limb in a recent interview with
Pocket-lint, with him saying that Blu-ray has, to paraphrase David
Bowie, only "five years left," and that he "certainly wouldn't give it ten." He
did say, however, that he thought 2008 would be Blu-ray's year, adding that
"it's going to be huge", and that Samsung is "heavily back-ordered at the
moment." As for Samsung's future after Blu-ray's supposed demise,
Griffiths seems to think that OLED will be the next big thing, and
he's pegging 2010 as a possible date for it to become mainstream and replace
LCD. He didn't offer a prediction as to when it will die out
though. It's only a deal if it's where you

Oldest gorilla in captivity dies in Dallas at 55
By LINDA STEWART BALL, Associated Press Writer
DALLAS - The oldest gorilla in captivity, a 55-year-old female named Jenny,
has died at the Dallas Zoo — her
home for more than half a century, a spokesman said Friday.
Zoo officials decided to euthanize Jenny on Thursday night
because of an inoperable tumor in her stomach. Jenny had stopped eating and
drinking recently, and tests showed she was unlikely to recover, spokesman Sean
Greene said.
Jenny's keepers described her as very sweet though a little bossy.
"If she doesn't want to go out on a certain day, she doesn't," Todd Bowsher,
curator of the zoo's Wilds of
Africa exhibit, said in May, when the zoo held a birthday bash to celebrate
Jenny's longevity. "But she really likes people."
The International Species Information System, which maintains records on
animals at 700 institutions around the world, confirmed earlier this year that
Jenny was the oldest gorilla in its database.
Jenny was born in the wild and was acquired by the zoo in 1957. She gave
birth in 1965 to a female named Vicki, and officials aren't sure why she didn't
conceive again. Vicki was sent to a Canadian zoo at age 5.
At the time of Jenny's death she was one of five gorillas at the Dallas
Zoo.
Gorillas
in the wild normally live to age 30 or 35, but they can survive years longer in
a zoo, with veterinary care and protection from predators. Still, of the roughly
360 gorillas in North American zoos, only four were over 50 as of this
spring.
Just last month, another gorilla at the zoo, 43-year-old Hercules, died after
undergoing a medical procedure for spinal disease.
In 2004, Dallas police shot and killed a 13-year-old gorilla named Jabari at
the zoo after it jumped over a wall, bit three people and snatched up a toddler
by his teeth. The enclosure was remodeled and the city paid a fine to the
U.S.
Department of Agriculture. <.html <.html

"For over 35 years this version of CONQUEST languished in the Fox vault,
unseen by human (or ape) eyes, and now, the original, uncut version will be
receiving its world premiere at this year's edition of Fantastic Fest, the
largest genre film festival in the U.S., running from September 18 - 25, 2008
at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, TX.
This one-time only screening will be free and open to the general public on
Saturday, September 20, at 12pm. Following this, Fox Home Entertainment will
make this version available exclusively in the PLANET OF THE APES 40 Year
Evolution Blu-Ray Collection available in stores on November 4th. The Fantastic
Fest CONQUEST screening will be in 1080p HD, making this the first public high
def screening of any of the APES films, and will preceded by Fox DVD giveaways
and previews.

Yep--early '90s. I've been unable to find a more specific date,
unfortunately.

Heh heh. If that at all. Given the ineptitude of the Sci-Fi Channel
management--or, should I say, the
Wrestling/B-Horror/Prematurely-Canceled-TV-Show Channel--in recent
years, I doubt they even know they RAN the Planet of the Apes TV
series at this point. <.html

The Chad Valley scans were sent to me by Mark Talbot Butler. I
don't know if it was Mark himself who was responsible for the scanning
but he did send them with the express wish that they be shared with
as much of APEDOM as possible.
With that in mind I think we'd all
be delighted to see what you intend to do with them.

Whitty, you should take those images and turn them into a "rotating

I did - but I sold it before I got to enjoy it too much! I actually thought there was a soundtrack too! MTB - can you verify? Actually, are you alive? I hear rumours but I can't
authenticate...... :)
The stories are crap but hey - so were all the POTA stories in the day (well, POWER RECORDS, for example). It really is great to see these in full restored splendour!
AND....it's the TV Series!
Neil - when we have run the series maybe we can ask Hunter to host it and Kass/Mez will be able to enjoy/be embarrased by it? :)
