I've managed to upload the photos taken Saturday, May 23, day of BayCon 2009 held in Santa Clara, CA. They are in my folder, Jessica's Stuff. Enjoy.
Jessica.

These were photos taken yesterday for Baycon 2009 in Santa Clara, California. It was so dinky compared to Wondercon. Going to have to save up some chimpchange and attend SDCC in full ape regalia next year.
Thinking of upgrading my costume and adding real leather for the collar. Just have to source the material.

|
.html Hi, folks,
Is anyone here from San Francisco? I was hoping someone who knows
that city might be able to help me. In the episode "The Trap," Burke
and Urko end up in a Bay Area Rapid Transit station. On the wall is
a sign reading "Exit to Sutter St." Does this correspond to any
actual BART subway system? Is there a Sutter St. stop? I read
online that someone thought it was the Embarcadero station, but if
that's the case, why does the wall say "Exit to Sutter St.?" If
anyone has an explanation for this, I'd be most grateful. Thanks in advance!

.html Hi, folks,
Some dorky questions:
* Has anyone ever managed to read the paperwork sitting on Prefect
Barlow's desk in "The Gladiators?" If so, what does it say?
* In "The Trap," can anyone decipher what the organ-replacement
poster says on the bottom line? The second word is "Clinic." Can
anyone figure out what the first word is? Is it "Elrad?"
* Also in "The Trap," can anyone make out the name of the company at
the bottom of the disposable clothing poster? There are three words,
the second and third of which are "Stores" and "Inc." Can anyone
read the first word? Is it "Stanley?"
Thanks!

Hi, folks,
Some dorky questions:
* Has anyone ever managed to
read the paperwork sitting on Prefect Barlow's desk in "The Gladiators?"
If so, what does it say?
* In "The Trap," can anyone decipher what the
organ-replacement poster says on the bottom line? The second word is
"Clinic." Can anyone figure out what the first word is? Is it
"Elrad?"
* Also in "The Trap," can anyone make out the name of the
company at the bottom of the disposable clothing poster? There are three
words, the second and third of which are "Stores" and "Inc." Can anyone
read the first word? Is it
"Stanley?"
Thanks! Rich

I've managed to upload the photos taken Saturday, May 23, day of BayCon
2009 held in Santa Clara ,
CA . They are in my folder, Jessica's
Stuff. Enjoy.

It was so dinky compared to Wondercon. Going to have to save up some

upgrading my costume and adding real leather for the collar. Just have to
source the material.

Thanks, Terry. Here you go:

This is at approx. 11:23.

This is at approx. 25:03. And now that I'm looking at it again, I
realize that the first letter is a "B," so I have NO idea what the word is.

.html
I have some dorky questions myself - I've been going through the credits for Escape and trying to put faces to the names. I know Rich has looked into this because I have his book here
beside me. Am I right in saying that 'General Brody' doesn't actually appear in the movie? Some promotional stuff identifies other onscreen people as Brody, but these are all given their own titles in the
screenplay on Hunter's site, whereas Brody has a few scenes near the start that aren't in the finished movie.
Eric Greene's book and a few websites say that Brody was played by someone called Stephen/Steve Roberts, but the same sources also say that Ed and Raylene Holliday starred as 'Hercules & Brunhilde' - another
scene from the screenplay that didn't make it to the screen ('midgets in Armando's circus'). So is it likely these characters were filmed but ultimately unused (and awaiting inclusion with a special
edition DVD)?

The Closest BART station to Sutter is the Montgomery station downtown.
It is only a short block away from Sutter and is really the only
plausible one that can be called "Sutter" station as none of the other
stations go anywhere near it.
You can see a map of Montgomery station and clearly see Sutter right
on the map:
http://www.bart.gov/stations/mont/index.aspx
As it so happens, both times I was down I was only blocks away from
the Montgomery. I took pictures the first time I was down of the
exterior of the station, which of course looks nothing like the
exterior shots in the episode. I may have even posted them here for
fun. The last time I was down, just 6 weeks ago, I even got on the
BART right at Montgomery. I took pictures of the station and train.

I'm sorry but i have to air my anger, last night i spent time on the computer and watching Beatlejuice on t.v.
When this finished i thought i would go to bed, but when i got into bed the t.v in our bedroom was on And film 4 at 1am started one of my favourite films Beneath Planet of the Apes.
How the f**k are we ever going to get the younger generations watching and taking an interest in the best film series and memrobelia if its shown past there bedtime?
I had to be up early this morning for work and struggled all day because of the late airing of this classic.
yes i have got it on dvd , but if its on it stay's on and watched for those classic words of wisdom at the beginning by Cornelius and by Ursus ( the only good human is a dead human)
Well thankyou channel 4 for the late showing, lets try putting that on at 4.30 , and let the kids of today see a masterpiece.
You never know we may even get such a positive response from it the next film and poss a t.v series may well be then in the pipeline.

Interesting! So I guess, in addition to using nuclear-powered railroad cars and solar-powered lighting, the BART of the POTA universe also had an extra subway station not included in the
real-world version.

I remember seeing the masks in the back of a comic book.
I ordered it and was a bit disappointed at the lack of facial

I spent a bit more than that on Pinkus' rejects.
I thought I'd recast them and fix them up. Then
I'd have perfectly proportioned ones, and sell 'em,
make all my money back, and corner the market.

I would like to let everyone know that there is a new POTA related book coming out in September 2009.
It is "The Amazing Rise & Spectacular Fall of Newton Comics" by Danny Best. Check out his blog at www.adelaidecomicsandbooks.com for a cover preview.
Aussie fans would know that Newton Comics reprinted POTA for the Australian market and the book will undoubtedly feature POTA significantly as it was their biggest seller and flagship title.
As well as the comics there will be an in-depth assessment of this short, frenetic period of publishing plus some interviews and rare pics.

Scientists have genetically modified primates to make them
glow green and pass the trait on to their offspring.
Though primates modified to generate a glowing protein have been created
before, these are the first to keep the change in their bloodlines.
Future genetic modifications to primates could aid efforts to cure such
diseases as Parkinson's.
The "transgenic" marmosets, created by a Japanese team, have been described
in the journal Nature.
The work raises a number of ethical questions about deliberately exposing a
bloodline of animals to such diseases.

I recently picked up the POTA Sunday Observer inserts which can be seen at notesfromthejunkyard.blogspot.com
It took a year of patience and persuasion and was pleased to finally purchase it a couple of months ago in a private sale from a gentleman in Melbourne. It must be one of the rarest Newton/POTA items that I've ever
come across.
The pride of my collection is a jumbo sized glossy poster of Bob Larkin's POTA 2 cover which was offered by Newton Comics as one of their competition and subscription prizes. I bought this from someone who actually
had a letter printed in Newton Comics back in 1975 and still lives at the same address!
cheers

No news on the POTA reboot "Caesar" but this
is kind of a progress report. Scott Frank, the dude who was writing and
directing "Caesar", got pulled off that project to write a script for Tom Cruise
and Cameron Diaz called "Witchita" (about the dating life of a secret agent).
Fox hoped the two stars would choose this of the many projects they have going,
and it worked. Fox has announced that His Majesty and Her Royal Highness have
picked "Witchita" as their next project, to be released in 2010. Way to go,
Scott! The question is, will he be on that project for a while
fine-tuning or will he now go back to "Caesar" (a script I've heard is not
finished yet).
Meanwhile, on the heels of Fox's
announcement that "Predator" will be rebooted, the rumor is that "Alien" will
also be revisited (an origin story, like "Caesar"). Fox's process now seems to
be matching up a new director (like Scott Frank on "Caesar") with an old pro as
producer. "Predators" has Robert Rodriguez, and the word is original "Alien"
director Ridley Scott will produce the new "Alien" with Carl Rinsch directing
(he's done commercials and music videos and has worked with Ridley before). So
if Fox wants to match up Scott Frank with James Cameron on "Caesar", be my
guest. <.html <.html

Flanigan, Helfer Guest on Warehouse 13
by Cynthia on May 28th, 2009
It's
going to be an all-star scifi summer on SCI FI Channel when some of
your favorite stars pop up on the new dramedy adventure Warehouse 13.
Top of the list, Stargate Atlantis' Joe Flanigan, Tricia Helfer from
Battlestar Galactica, and one of my personal faves, James Naughton who
starred in the Planet of the Apes TV series, but is more commonly known
for his role on Gossip Girl.
Warehouse 13 is the story of two Secret Service
agents who are assigned to guard a massive, top-secret storage facility
in windswept South Dakota which houses every strange artifact,
mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever
collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse's caretaker Artie (Saul
Rubinek) charges Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanna Kelly) with
chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search
of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to
control the warehouse itself.
Guest Stars Include:
Ivan Sergei (Crossing Jordan, Charmed) is "Ross" an
EMT from Unionville, New York. Ross and some of the other townspeople
begin to display bizarre behavioral symptoms — involuntary (and
potentially dangerous) expressions of their subconscious desires.
Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Burn Notice)
stars as FBI Agent "Bonnie Belski" who clashes with Pete and Myka when
they interfere with a case on her Chicago turf. But after the third
inexplicable bank takeover, she finds herself willing to make use of
their expertise.
Joe Flanigan (Stargate
Atlantis, First Monday) portrays the handsome, wealthy "Jeff Weaver"
whose charm captures Myka's interest, but he finds himself under Pete
and Myka's scrutiny when a sculpture on which he bid, vanishes in an
impossible heist.
James Naughton (Ally McBeal, Gossip Girl) is
"Gilbert Radburn," the well-tailored, Trump-esque high-profile
entrepreneur. When a competitor threatens his intended acquisition,
Radburn's suspicious behavior brings him under Pete and Myka's scrutiny.
Roger Rees
(Cheers, The West Wing) is "MacPherson" one of Artie's former Warehouse
colleagues, who has gone rogue and is now competing with the team to
gather dangerous and powerful objects for his own use.
Erica Cerra
(Eureka, The L Word) and Niall Matter (Eureka, The Best Years) portray
"Jillian and Gary Whitman," small-time thieves on the Las Vegas strip,
whose fortunes, twisted by the strange power of luck-inducing artifact,
take a fantastic turn.
Joe Morton (Eureka, Terminator 2) stars as "John Hill" a charismatic prison inmate and an extremist religious leader in a Florida prison.
Mark Sheppard (24, Battlestar Galactica) is "Mr.
Valda" the enigmatic representative of the Regents, the mysterious
organization that controls Warehouse 13. He disapproves of Artie's
methods as the team leader of the Warehouse, and isn't afraid to let
him know it.
Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica, The L Word)
portrays Myka's father "Warren Bering," who receives a dangerous object
anonymously in the mail which puts his life in jeopardy.
Warehouse 13 will premiere Tuesday, July 7 with the 2-hour pilot from 9 - 11PM ET/PT.

Okay... I need to get rid of some stuff.....
I went way overboard with getting stuff related to Burton's film......should've waited..... (I also have a ton of Episode One figures!)
I'll keep a few things like the trading cards and some figures but I really don't need all the rest of this stuff..... and I'd probably get zilch for it on ebay.....
If somene wants to offer something to take it all, feel free!
Otherwise, I'm offering...if anyone wants any of this stuff.... just pay me shipping and it's yours...
certainly smaller stuff I'd send for no shipping..... but some of it is heavy!
Anybody interesed....anyone? Beuller? Just write me off group if you want any of this crap...uh great stuff!

(May 28). He was just as significant in getting Fox to make POTA as Arthur was,
constantly pestering the studio. And of course, he produced the first two
movies. He was the man on the scene, especially on location since Arthur
couldn't travel because of his health.
I got to meet him twice and thank him for
his work. His son died recently too, so it's a real sad time for the family.

It's the entire Planet of the Apes game from Ubisoft, played from

died
Mort's daughter-in- law
says he died today (May 28). He was just as significant in getting Fox to make
POTA as Arthur was, constantly pestering the studio. And of course, he
produced the first two movies. He was the man on the scene, especially on
location since Arthur couldn't travel because of his health.
I got to meet him twice and
thank him for his work. His son died recently too, so it's a real sad time for
the family. RIP.

Once again, nothing to do with "Caesar" but
everything to do with it. There's confirmation that Fox is doing a prequel
reboot of "Alien". Tony Scott confirmed that he and his brother Ridley are
producing it. Ridley Scott, of course, directed the original. So it's kind of a
George Lucas thing. If it's going to be ruined at least it will be ruined by the
originator. Or has it already been ruined by previous sequels? Or will it
actually be OK?
Anyway, they seem to be taking the same
route with "Caesar", a prequel. And that was before "Star Trek" made it
mandatory.
Oh, and Phil Spector got 19
years. <.html <.html

Excellent, thanks Rich. Of course I would have recorded it in better quality ;-) but looking at this I really wouldn't have had the patience to work my way through the whole thing even
if I had the skillz.

I saw it. A decent panel about the first POTA
with Verne Langdon as moderator (he worked on the first in the makeup lab);
Dan Striepeke, he ran the Fox makeup dept. during the movies, etc. Two Oscar
noms for "Forrest Gump" and "Saving Ryan's Privates", was Tom Hank's go -to
makeup guy; Lou Wagner, who played Lucius and returned as the busboy in
"Conquest"; and Tom Burman, who was an apprentice at the time and has since
earned his stripes.
No taping or pictures was allowed at the
panel, nah! nah! nah!
Anyway, they went over pretty common stuff
but did it with flair. I liked how they imitated John Chambers' grumpiness. They
talked about the challenge of the makeup task, Streipeke said it was the most
makeups ever at the time for one production. He was the head of the Fox makeup
dept. but he still had to roll up his sleeves; he worked on the hair and wigs.
They gave special props to the late
Josephine Turner, who worked on the wigs. And of course they praised Franklin
Schaffner for taking "the high road" and making a movie they knew was good but
didn't know would stay this accomplished. Wagner noted the social commentary,
touchy in the '60's. They remembered the first day of developing the makeup,
they found the original mask David Hedison wore in "The Fly" and Chambers said
to "throw it out." They needed all the makeup people they could find. Burman
said they used everyone on "the list" and Wagner replied, "They had to create a
new list". Wagner remembered having to eat with chopsticks and that the first
day on location, the real star, the makeup plane, hadn't arrived.
Wagner and Langdon were in a band together
in college yet he didn't recognize Wagner in the makeup (made a joke that
Shelley Winters could hide under the makeup but he knew Wagner wasn't Shelley
Winters because he was slightly smaller).
Someone asked about makeup they'd seen for a
female gorilla and Langdon said the female gorillas were just tests, they
weren't planned for the movie. Someone brought up Bill Blake and Streipeke
called him an "extraordinary makeup artist". Elaine Dietz from the TV show (the
older sis in "The Good Seeds") was at the show selling her "Exorcist" wares and
dropped in to say hi to the panel.
That's about all I recall, except they had a
slideshow going during the panel and there were some cool pictures I hadn't
seen. Don't know how to describe them, except like "Heston eating lunch",
"Zanuck on the publicity shot set", "an ape on Hollywood Blvd." , etc. Stuff I
hadn't seen but maybe the "photo fiends" have.
There were some other non-Ape, makeup
related presentations, and a terrific display of creature makeup (including an
awesome "Jaws"). They had Forry Ackerman's life mask when he was 26 and when he
was 90. The show was kind of geared to the budding makeup artists and horror
fans, with a section on makeup materials to buy. There were horror celebs (the
guy who played Jason, etc.)
The hard sell of cons is depressing, and
it's hard to even say hi to a celeb without feeling guilty for not buying
something. So after the panel I left, because there was no one to hold me there.
Though I did get Streipeke and Dietz to sign my Eric Greene book, which is ready
to be bronzed.

I, too just got back from there. I spent
about 30 mins talking to Eileen Dietz about Pota andd Exorcist. She was
very pleasant. Talked to Lou Wagner for a bit. Someone on here or
another POTA group mentioned that he didn't wear a wig in Planet. I asked
him about that and he said no one knew that. He told me they "poofed" his
hair up and blended the facial hair into his hair. He, too was very
pleasant.

I, too just got back from there. I spent about 30 mins talking to Eileen Dietz about Pota andd Exorcist. She was very pleasant. Talked to Lou Wagner for a bit. Someone on here or
another POTA group mentioned that he didn't wear a wig in Planet. I asked him about that and he said no one knew that. He told me they "poofed" his hair up and blended the facial hair into his hair.
He, too was very pleasant.

I saw it. A decent panel about the first POTA with Verne Langdon as moderator (he worked on the first in the makeup lab); Dan Striepeke, he ran the Fox makeup dept. during the movies, etc.
Two Oscar noms for "Forrest Gump" and "Saving Ryan's Privates", was Tom Hank's go -to makeup guy; Lou Wagner, who played Lucius and returned as the busboy in "Conquest"; and Tom
Burman, who was an apprentice at the time and has since earned his stripes.
No taping or pictures was allowed at the panel, nah! nah! nah!
Anyway, they went over pretty common stuff but did it with flair. I liked how they imitated John Chambers' grumpiness. They talked about the challenge of the makeup task, Streipeke said
it was the most makeups ever at the time for one production. He was the head of the Fox makeup dept. but he still had to roll up his sleeves; he worked on the hair and wigs.
They gave special props to the late Josephine Turner, who worked on the wigs. And of course they praised Franklin Schaffner for taking "the high road" and making a movie they knew
was good but didn't know would stay this accomplished. Wagner noted the social commentary, touchy in the '60's. They remembered the first day of developing the makeup, they found the original mask David
Hedison wore in "The Fly" and Chambers said to "throw it out." They needed all the makeup people they could find. Burman said they used everyone on "the list" and Wagner replied, "They
had to create a new list". Wagner remembered having to eat with chopsticks and that the first day on location, the real star, the makeup plane, hadn't arrived.
Wagner and Langdon were in a band together in college yet he didn't recognize Wagner in the makeup (made a joke that Shelley Winters could hide under the makeup but he knew Wagner
wasn't Shelley Winters because he was slightly smaller).
Someone asked about makeup they'd seen for a female gorilla and Langdon said the female gorillas were just tests, they weren't planned for the movie. Someone brought up Bill Blake
and Streipeke called him an "extraordinary makeup artist". Elaine Dietz from the TV show (the older sis in "The Good Seeds") was at the show selling her "Exorcist" wares and dropped in to
say hi to the panel.
That's about all I recall, except they had a slideshow going during the panel and there were some cool pictures I hadn't seen. Don't know how to describe them, except like
"Heston eating lunch", "Zanuck on the publicity shot set", "an ape on Hollywood Blvd." , etc. Stuff I hadn't seen but maybe the "photo fiends" have.
There were some other non-Ape, makeup related presentations, and a terrific display of creature makeup (including an awesome "Jaws"). They had Forry Ackerman's life mask when
he was 26 and when he was 90. The show was kind of geared to the budding makeup artists and horror fans, with a section on makeup materials to buy. There were horror celebs (the guy who played Jason, etc.)
The hard sell of cons is depressing, and it's hard to even say hi to a celeb without feeling guilty for not buying something. So after the panel I left, because there was no one to hold
me there. Though I did get Streipeke and Dietz to sign my Eric Greene book, which is ready to be bronzed.
That's about it from Karloffornia.

I just remembered something Tom Burman mentioned
about the look of the apes. As already known, the studios heads thought
that "realistic" apes were too ugly. They wanted something that "the
audience could relate to and have compassion for." Tom was working on a
sculpture in a back room. After the execs nixed John Chambers' sculpts,
they were leaving and saw Tom's sculpt. That was the look they
liked. He said he wasn't real good at sculpting, back then and it was way
too human. John was upset and banned him from the lab for a week.
But, they needed him badly, so he was allowed to come back. Dan, John, and
Tom decided that the fact that the apes had evolved was the answer to why they
looked the way they did.

Today, I'm going to be an ultra geek and am going to see the original movie on the big screen with my full ape regalia. My four year old is wearing a gorilla outfit I spent 3 hours on Friday night. He wanted
to know where his mask was. I told him I was "working on it" but he is happy to come along in the costume.
I was just feeling a little sad that apes are a dying breed. it doesn't help that my husband gives me no support in my geekiness.
My six year old refused for me to make him lunch because he said he doesn't want me near his food while wearing my ape makeup. I promised him I wouldn't put any hair in his food, but he still refused.
LOL!! Oh well. Guess my husband will have to feed him.
Just feeling sad and lonely.

Dietz was Jillia in "The Good Seeds". But I
guess best known for "The Exorcist" where she was Linda Blair's double, who they
tested the makeups on and who did the stunts and is the white face of the demon
Pazuzu. Her experience wearing makeup led to the POTA role.
I enjoyed talking to her, she's a character.
She reminds me of Margot Kidder (who was also at Monsterpalooza). For those
who want to see what "Jillia" is up to, she has a good website:
Meeting her inspired me to rewatch the
excellent "Exorcist" doc "Fear of God" on the old DVD. In it they talk about how
Lalo Schiffrin was hired to compose the music for the film but the director was
so offended by what he came up with, thought it was obvious, commercial crap,
that he literally fired him on the spot in front of everybody, including Lalo's
family. He took the music reels and threw them out the window to the parking lot
across the street! Then they used music that was already written, the
effective "Tubular Bells". Of course, soon after, maybe a year or so, Schiffrin
did the POTA TV show theme. The doc also has lots of footage of Eileen testing
the makeup, spitting pea soup, etc. She continues to work in horror, she's
in the upcoming sequel to the remake of "Halloween", "H2". When's the
remake of "The Exorcist"? <.html <.html

I agree with this "evolution" look and I actually believe they must have done some genetic manipulation and crossing which makes it further understandable.
So in the movies they ARE supposed to be advanced and they are NOT supposed to be standard apes in suits!
That's VERY important to me...

Hey, I have a slight problem when I dress up as a chimpanzee at
Comic-con, do I wear gloves for my hand, or just go all-natural. Or just buy the
hands from Apemania.

You can lighten them, with make up, to match the
face. If you look at some of the apes in the TV series, their hands are a
little darker than their faces.

I was trying to upload photos, but it's too slow. I will try again tomorrow. Ashton took this photo of me removing the appliance. Look how perfectly it fits my face. Always such a shame to have to remove
it.
Jess.
Kev--I can't wait to see your photos when you are in the goo.

Hi Eric,
What happened? Was there a memorial
for Mort?
I went to the Monsterpalooza thing. They
wouldn't let me tape it. Below is my write up.
I'm going to do a tribute to Mort for "Ape
Chronicles". If you want to write something up too that would be
cool.

I saw it. A decent panel about the first
POTA with Verne Langdon as moderator (he worked on the first in the
makeup lab); Dan Striepeke, he ran the Fox makeup dept. during the movies,
etc. Two Oscar noms for "Forrest Gump" and "Saving Ryan's Privates", was Tom
Hank's go -to makeup guy; Lou Wagner, who played Lucius and returned as the
busboy in "Conquest"; and Tom Burman, who was an apprentice at the time and
has since earned his stripes.
No taping or pictures was allowed at the
panel, nah! nah! nah!
Anyway, they went over pretty common stuff
but did it with flair. I liked how they imitated John Chambers' grumpiness.
They talked about the challenge of the makeup task, Streipeke said it was the
most makeups ever at the time for one production. He was the head of the Fox
makeup dept. but he still had to roll up his sleeves; he worked on the hair
and wigs.
Burman
said they used everyone on "the list" and Wagner replied, "They had to create
a new list". Wagner remembered having to eat with chopsticks and that the
first day on location, the real star, the makeup plane, hadn't arrived.
Wagner and Langdon were in a band together
in college yet he didn't recognize Wagner in the makeup (made a joke that
Shelley Winters could hide under the makeup but he knew Wagner wasn't Shelley
Winters because he was slightly smaller).
Someone asked about makeup they'd seen for
a female gorilla and Langdon said the female gorillas were just tests, they
weren't planned for the movie. Someone brought up Bill Blake and Streipeke
called him an "extraordinary makeup artist". Elaine Dietz from the TV show
(the older sis in "The Good Seeds") was at the show selling her "Exorcist"
wares and dropped in to say hi to the panel.
That's about all I recall, except they had
a slideshow going during the panel and there were some cool pictures I hadn't
They had Forry Ackerman's life mask when he was 26 and when
he was 90. The show was kind of geared to the budding makeup artists and
horror fans, with a section on makeup materials to buy. There were horror
celebs (the guy who played Jason, etc.)
The hard sell of cons is depressing, and
it's hard to even say hi to a celeb without feeling guilty for not buying
something. So after the panel I left, because there was no one to hold me
there. Though I did get Streipeke and Dietz to sign my Eric Greene book, which
is ready to be bronzed.
That's about it from
Karloffornia.
