The first thing I ever found was at the local comic book shop
by luck I found a beat copy of POTA Marvel Magazine #7
It was the only thing I had for a long time - got it when I was about 14 in 1985
Since it was the 1980s there was nothing out there at all and I had not been part of the original toy craze as I was 3 in 1974.
The local video had all the movies and I did rent them around this time as well - so except for airings I first saw on TV (late night movie)
this was the first time I got to see the movies when I wanted !

The first thing I found relating to POTA was in 1975 when I found the album of Planet of the Apes
in a record shop for $1.00.  Which I still have.

So he could find his destiny!

I reckon Z thought he’d be too devastated to be any harm.

Hang in there Jess, and look at the bright side. You DO have a full
costume to wear when you want to. Few of us have that luxury. All
we've got are our toys, comics, books, magazines, DVDs, t-shirts and
stuff. You get to actually be an ape for a while every now and then.

PS However, you could go off planet, to another planet, where some of astronauts actually made it to that M-class planet. Astronuats and a few apes. Hey, this kind of sounds dreadfully familiar. (Ug!) Well, it wasn't a bad idea, just  badly done.

I always thought Zaius did that so that Taylor could die a slow death and that's two less carcasses to have to deal with in Ape City.

I must have been 8. It was one of those canister puzzles. Our dad glued it onto a piece of cardboard once we put the puzzle pieces together, and we nailed that over this door in the bedroom because we were freaked out at wood grain of the door, which looked like an old man staring at you.

Whats your story?

The first thing I'd have picked up would have been either POTA weekly #1 from Marvel UK or Mego's Cornelius, so I'd have been around 9 years old.

Though I'm not sure  if I'd have seen the first episode of the TV series or not at this point.

I do remember seeing the trailers for the show on TV and this was the first time I was aware of POTA.

( I have a vague memory of seeing the Battle movie poster on the tube in London when I was on holiday visiting family but not sure if this is a "false" memory or not)

Best,Graham.

My first was issue #27 of the British weekly comic back in 1975. After that I soon picked up all the back issues from a second hand book stall at the Bury markets, all except issue 1. I never found a copy of that until I moved out here years later!
I had seen Escape in 1971 at the Friday night movies put on by the RAAF at a hostel they had when I was living in Penang, Malaysia. I was 8 years old and it blew me away but I knew nothing more about POTA until the comics and TV show came out in England when I 'lived the Apes craze'

Its interesting that the movie is now so old that anyone under 50 could not have likely seen the original airing.
So my concern is 20 yrs from now POTA could be totally unimportant to the first generation viewers

Do we have anyone on here that is over 50 ?

My first was also a comic which i found at a newsagents outside Oldham market, dont remember the number but i bought it after seeing the advert for the forth coming t.v series , which blew me away.
then i was lucky enough to go and see the live show in Rochdale, but it was a little while after before seeing the original film on T.V, this was late seventies.
I was just into my teens and me and my friends used to play planet of the apes every day , we made our own rifles and put on purple clothes and black jackets with the arms cut off!!
Happy days
Mark :)

Wow!  When they said they blended some of the actors hair into
the wigs I thought they were just talking about using hair from the
haircuts in the wig making process.  I didn't know they used Lou
Wagner's actual hair!  It did seem very curly, but I didn't know it
wasn't even a wig!  I imagine that it was a lot cooler for him.

I always figured he was teaching Taylor a lesson. Taylor was acting
all high and mighty about how evil and terrible the apes were
being...so Zaius figured he'd let him see that humans were far worse,
and thereby put him in his place.

I have two gorilla recruits living in my household (that I completely overlooked) that will flank my side at Wondercon, February 2010. So...if anybody is willing to go ape with us, that would be wonderful. We will totally represent.

I posted photos of us here:

I need help in identifying this poster I won on ebay....

it is  20" x 26"  ...and has a silver look to it.....in the bottom right hand corner it says
"A scene from Pierre Boulle's mind-bending fantasy, PLANET OF THE APES   PG-33" written in the "Mary Tyler Moore" script.....

Is that "PG-33" some kind of rating?

the seller says only that it was hanging in a "headshop " (although it doesn't really smell of incense like he said!)

It has creases from when originally folded...squares are 7" by 8"
Thought maybe it was pulled from a magazine but there are no signs of staple holes....

Artwork is definitely Heston and apes from the chase scenes but Nova doesn't look like Linda and I've never seen her in that pose before....

anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

There is a movie that is worst than Ape, KONGA   in my opinion is the worst movie ever made,
imagine a chimpanzee turning into a giant gorilla. I haven't seen APE, but it almost sound like
KONGA, but he had a mad scientist in his hand.

APE (1976)

Considered the worst Apes movie of all time - in fact almost the worst movie ever made!

Anyone ever seen this ?

A newly discovered 36-foot gorilla escapes from a freighter off the coast of Korea. At the same time an American actress is filming a movie in the country. Chaos ensues as the ape kidnaps her and rampages through Seoul

I've got someone writing an Aliens/Predator book for me, and he needs
to get his hands on the bio card printed on the back of the

has one and wouldn't mind scanning it for me, I'd be extremely

It looks like News Corp has a replacement for Peter Chernin, who retires at the end of the month. Basically, this person is the # 2 man behind Rupert Murdoch. And that person is...

Tim Burton. No, it's Chasey Carey, who was running DirecTV for News Corp. What does this have to do with anything? Nothing really, except that as News Corp. goes, so goes POTA.
The main difference seems to be that while Chernin used to run Fox and was still very involved when as # 2, Carey will be more hands off when it comes to movies. So Rothman and Co. can continue to ruin movies without interference.
Apparently Rupe's kids are not ready (or willing) to begin their ascent to the top, so Carey will be around for a while. He might still be there 3 "Caesar" sequels from now.

    Tickled apes yield laughter clue

New research has given credence to the idea that laughter evolved in a common ancestor of the great apes and humans.
Researchers tickled 22 young apes and three humans and acoustically analysed the laughing sounds that resulted.
Though the vocalisations varied, the team found that the patterns of changes fit with evolutionary splits in the human and ape family tree.
The research in Current Biology also suggests that gorillas and bonobos have some control over their breathing.
Primate researchers have long guessed that many of the social behaviours that are seen in humans have a basis in our primate lineage.
Studies have noted that vocalisations that some apes make while being tickled are similar to those made when they are playing, and acoustically they share some characteristics with human laughter.

Kung Fu star Carradine found dead

Kill Bill and Kung Fu star David Carradine has been found dead in a Bangkok hotel room on Thursday.
Thai police told the BBC a hotel maid found the 72-year-old naked in a wardrobe with a cord around his neck and other parts of his body.
The US star was in Thailand filming his latest film, Stretch, according to his personal manager Chuck Binder.
Mr Binder said the news was "shocking", adding: "He was full of life, always wanting to work... a great person."
Police said the actor's body was found in a suite at the 5-star Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel.

    And it gets worse:

Bangkok -- The body of American actor David Carradine, best known for the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu," was found in a hotel room closet with a rope tied to his neck and genitals, and his death may have been caused by accidental suffocation, Thai police said today.
The 72-year-old actor's body was discovered Thursday in his luxury suite at Bangkok's Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel. Police initially said they suspected suicide, though Carradine's associates had questioned that theory.
Police Lt. Gen. Worapong Chewprecha told reporters that Carradine was found with a rope tied around his genitals and another rope around his neck.
"The two ropes were tied together," he said. "It is unclear whether he committed suicide or not or he died of suffocation or heart failure."

I reckon there is a good reason for that, I mean they really were very bad for the most part, especially the Ape City mini series which have to be some of the worst POTA comics I have ever had the misfortune to read!

Torrent site 'Demonoid' has recently added the complete Adventure Comics + annual + all spin-offs to their torrent files. As far as I know most of these haven't been available anywhere online in any format up to now.

    Hey, everyone,

I just found something interesting online that I thought I would share:

    http://www.youtube. com/view_ play_list? p=5C31199BB085E1 DE

It's the entire Planet of the Apes game from Ubisoft, played from
beginning to end, broken up into 42 videos. So anyone who hasn't
played the game but would like to see it played out in full, now's your chance!

I have to agree strongly with Neil.

There are a few gems amongst the Adventure comics, but overall they did not do enough to balance out an overall good impression.

On the contrary they were just BAD.

The art didn’t help, but most of all it was the soul that was lacking.

The stories were so bad, and they were just nothing to do with POTA except a few bad and silly tie-ins.  The stories could have made a difference – if they were any good I could have asked Neil to re-illustrate.

Actually that might be amusing – to give Neil a written script for one of the issues and see what he comes up with!

    Michael

I collected cars for many years and I would always find ones that I would never let go.

Then someone would offer the right price and BANG! gone!

Then someone would offer the WRONG price but I was desperate and BANG! gone!

I said the same of my POTA collection and decided I’d just but bigger houses with better display cabinets and a large room for my drum kit with Ape Mania mannequins and costumes etc.

    Same thing happened!

That’s my honest answer – it’s all for sale.

Anyone who says theirs is not has just never hit times hard enough.

Not just the POTA actors going these days, seems like almost everyone from my childhood TV watching days is dead or dying!

I think Carradine had some help.
Especially if it's true the rope went
from his hands behind his back around
his neck and to his privates.  I'd say if
he was alone he was getting awfully creative.

good question ? my favourite item that i wont be getting rid of is my original background gorilla outfit from beneath planet of the apes from western costumes.
There are a few about but they are getting more expensive to buy .
But the reason i wont sell when i was a kid couldn't afford to buy much from planet of the apes , but we used to dress up and play pota on the fields with make do clothing and wooden shaped rifles.
So its not just the fact that it's screen worn but memory's also.

I think Carradine had some help.

Especially if it's true the rope went

from his hands behind his back around

his neck and to his privates.  I'd say if

he was alone he was getting awfully creative.
