I did a quick search for them online, and found contact info for Sandra Berchoff (from 2005, at least) here:

Scroll down to (Duffy) Berchoff, Sandra. She mentions Billy as her husband (he's Sandy Berchoff's husband in the news article), and she apparently went to a school in Massachusetts, which is where the couple in the article live. So I'm pretty confident it's the same couple.

You could contact her and ask for photos of the costumes--assuming you don't feel freaky-stalkerish in doing so, that is. :)

Sadly, no. They're my Holy Grail of Apes collectibles, and were the only comics I failed to track down in time to release the timeline book. I only managed to find images of the covers shortly before we went to print, in fact, in order to include them in the cover gallery--and then, only by a fluke, as I decided to do a search for them in Spanish instead of in English. Given that the comics are in Japanese, not Spanish, I'm amazed (a) that I even thought to do that, and (b) that it actually worked!

From what I can tell, the 1971 book is 250 pages (!), the 1968 one hasn't shown up anywhere for me. I think POTA might be one of a few stories (possibly all movie adaptations) in that mag.

Oh, that's cool. I wonder who owns the rights to all that stuff? His wife seems to have a lot of stuff, Fox presumably holds the POTA pictures they've included in DVD releases, maybe bought from APJAC. Do you know of any other artists involved in the production sketches Neil?

Jôji Enami and was published in April 1968.

$430 indeed! You can buy a lot of banana's for that kind of money.

Value is a subjective thing of course, so it really does comes down to
how much it is worth to you. But even for a 'rare' magazine, that
seems excessive. Anything over $100 is nuts in my book. But I'm a
conservative shopper and don't engage in high priced items, even for
POTA merchandise.

I think what makes this item rare to us is that we do not have any
meaningful knowledge of what is available in the Japanese market and
whether this is really something that approaches 'one of a handful of
existing' or something merely 'hard to get'.

Since your 'friend' is doing all that searching for you personally,
and you've obviously been a generous buyer over the years, he is in a
unique position to take advantage of you, if so inclined.

I hate to label him, but I think the price being asked speaks for
itself.

If you feel it is worth the price, go for it. If not, just offer what
you think it's worth.

Today I got my ape on. I only had one hour to slap on my makeup and five minutes to put on my wig. Needless to say, I looked like a wreck...but I still went out in public and had a great time. Caused a lot of commotion at my kid's school, and many did a double take. I was even photographed by a stranger with his cell phone while I pumped some gas. I did not have time to paint my nails dark brown nor did I have a chance to color the backs of my hands...Nobody really noticed. They were just shocked to see me.

And, just because I am such a geek, I decided to take a nap in my full costume when I got home. I really wanted to wake up and feel the shock of what it would have been like to have turned into a chimp. But that didn't happen, unfortunately. I found out that it's quite uncomfortable to sleep with those massive latex ears glued on top of your own ears...and when I did wake up, my throat was so parched from breathing through my mouth. I decided then, that I had just better get up and start peeling off the makeup, since that takes quite a bit of time.

Anyway, that was my ape kind of day. It was short, and sweet, and time well spent away from the slavemines. To add to the excitement is the apes marathon on the Fox Movie Channel, and tomorrow is Saturday so I get to sleep in. What a happy chimp I am.

Oh, that's cool. I wonder who owns the rights to all that stuff? His wife seems to have a lot of stuff, Fox presumably holds the POTA pictures they've included in DVD releases, maybe bought from APJAC. Do you know of any other artists involved in the production sketches Neil?

I don't know much about them, other than this:
1) Each contains an original, unique manga adaptation of Planet of the Apes.
2) The first, entitled Bouken Ou Bessatsu, is by
Jôji Enami and was published in April 1968.
3) The second, entitled Tengoku Zôkan, is by
Minoru Kuroda and was published in June 1971.

Bad news: the apes movie disappeared through a Hasslein Curve on the Pinewood Studios website. I just contacted Pinewood Studios. They have confirmed that the November 14 of Planet of the Apes will NOT be shown.

The reason why they were going to show the 2001 remake was because it was something that was filmed there. But nobody bought the tickets. We know why! Because it sucks!! Then they were going to show the 1968 movie, but there was not enough lead time to make it a success and they have just canceled it today. Rory, please let cinema retro know about the cancellation.

PS...Just because it's not showing November 14 does not mean that they won't show the 1968 movie sometime next year. They don't know exactly when but they will let the Forum of the Apes know. Before hanging up, I told them that they need to make sure it's the 1968 movie classic because the 2001 won't sell. They know now.

I'd really love to see these, but I wouldn't want you to re-mortgage your house just for us lot!

The challenge will be in translating these issues. With the Argentine comics, I was able to translate them using my rusty command of Spanish, checking Babel Fish for any terms I didn't recognize or wasn't sure of. It took a while to translate each issue, but it was a feasible task.

The difference here will be in figuring out how to deal with the Japanese symbols. Unless someone has an unusually accurate OCR program and can scan all of the characters and then paste them into Babel Fish or some other online translation program, you'll need to find someone who actually speaks the language. That's going to be quite a challenge.

But still, what a great find! I'd never have paid that much for it, but it's cool that you did, regardless. :)

I'm very curious about this comic. If you do manage to scan and disseminate (and maybe even translate) it, I look forward to seeing the end result. Thanks for helping to finally make this rare gem available to fans, Michael.

I consider this an even bigger coup than the Argentine comics, which are slightly easier to find since the alphabet is the same and, thus, the title is searchable using an English search engine. (I found 4 of the 7 issues myself, in fact, including the elusive #7.) But info on the two mangas has been annoyingly scarce.
