Image 1 is, I’m fairly sure, PLANET and nothing else.  I’ll confirm this when it arrives.

I think “Image 2” is a Japanese Mag and I would not be surprised to discover it’s their version of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND (could anyone be bothered comparing to the FMoF on Huter;s site?).

I think all the other images are “Image 3” but some are incorrectly labeled 4” on the site but they all seem to be manga art and I think they are all from:

3. planet of apes &  planet of apes part 5 manga

(part 1 manga-62 pages, part 5 manga-49 pages intruduction of movie is 44 pages.

total 280 pages.)

I’ll be getting that too seeing it’s a steal for $380!  :-0

So – hang in there and the answers will be forthcoming.

Looking forward to scanning nicely some of those awesome poster pages and asking Neil really nicely to touch them up!  J

Michael

Wow! This is getting confusing. The Beneath one looks like it is just done with photos?

I really like the look of the stuff inside of the 'image - 3' one, some of the art looks fantastic and the cutaway of the spaceship etc. wow again! So just how many are there? It looks like there are 2 different ones for Planet? And are there mangas of all the other movies as well?

All a bit confusing because when you get to it, “image 3” is marked as “4”, but here’s some interesting stuff!

AWESOME art too!

Seems like there’s bloody HEAPS of different POTA mangas out there!

Also seems they are based on the first movie, so really translation may be unnecessary because we will get the gist from having seen the movies!

Michael

It is confusing isn't it. From the first link it looks like there are 4 books? The third link for 'image - 3' actually seems to bring up the contents of book 4, the one with the green cover with the gorilla photo on it. That's the one that seems to have the Spaceship cutaway drawing as well as what looks like an illustration of Ape City with photo references of places on it. This is the book that looks like the most interesting to me though it doesn't seem to be a comic adaptation?

The Japanese word saru means any primates, usually excluding humans. The character 猿 is used for it. It typically means Japanese macaques, short-tailed monkeys native to Japan. The English word monkey means primates excluding apes and prosimians. This difference makes the translation of Planet of the Apes a little awkward. In that movie, apes believe the hierarchy of simians to be apes, humans, and monkeys. But it is translated to "猿の惑星" (Saru no Wakusei) in Japanese, which means the planet of the monkeys (primates excluding humans). The Japanese word for apes is 類人猿 (ruijin'en), which literally means human-like monkeys and doesn't sound appropriate in that movie.

Chinese differentiates apes and monkeys like English does: 猿 and 猴. The former means only apes unlike in Japanese, and is divided into 猩猩 (anthropoids) and 長臂猿 (gibbons). It was originally written as 猨 and meant gibbons, which lived in China when the climate was warmer. The phonetic radical 爰 meant to pull something (such as a branch) and is used in 援. The latter, 猴, typically means rhesus macaques, and includes 狒狒 (baboons), etc.

Mike, I might have a couple of people able to translate the manga for you. However, if they are, it's likely they'll want to be paid for the job, as they are third parties who know people I know, so they don't really have a reason to do me a favor since they don't me from Zaius. I'm still hopeful that someone will come through with someone willing to do it for free.

Don't know the episode name but in it the family stay at a monkey sanctuary or something for some reason that escapes me. The place is run by some woman who turns out to be not the nice person everyone thought she was thanks to Lisa finding something out I think.
Anyway the pic is from when Lisa is leafing through a photo album and there are different ape pictures on each page and one was this POTA one. There's also a King Kong picture and one of the winged monkeys from Wizard of OZ.

The Japanese word for apes is 人猿 (ruijin'en), which literally means human-like monkeys and doesn't sound appropriate in that movie.

Chinese differentiates apes and monkeys like English does: 猿 and 猴. The former means only apes unlike in Japanese, and is divided into 猩猩 (anthropoids) and L臂猿 (gibbons). It was originally written as j and meant gibbons, which lived in China when the climate was warmer. The phonetic radical 爰 meant to pull something (such as a branch) and is used in 援. The latter, 猴, typically means rhesus macaques, and includes 狒狒 (baboons), etc.

Thanks for the warm welcome. As you know my name is Maz, and im a twenty three year old artist who is currently in his third and final year at the Joe Kubert School of Art. I love drawing and painting, especially things im interested in like Star Wars, Batman and Planet of the Apes. I hope to land a job in the commercial art or comic art field. I'd love to be a graphic designer, illustrator or concept artist.

Ive been a huge apes fan since I first saw escape when I was 4 or so. From there my love for everything POTA has grown, especially recently. I have a nice collection of original ape art and continue to collect.

Aside from POTA Im a fan of sports, the twilight zone, the x files, batman, jonah hex, and anything unexplained or paranormal. Feel free to check out some of my art at mazadamsart.deviantart.com. I gladly accept commissions when I have the time. Thanks and I look forward to talking to everyone!

I have always wondered if it was necessary for the gorillas posing for photographs to light the flash, since they were already outdoors and it's pretty dang bright. And if it was the really old type of cameras, they would need to pose for a very long time and very still to prevent blurring...just like the old days.

Oh yeah I’m fairly sure that was just for dramatic effect – maybe they were worried people would not recognize the (even then!) old camera.

        It’s a pretty cool find!

Ah, to be sure, to be sure!

        Michael

        Thanks Moxy!

        It's a pretty cool find!

I reckon "4" is actually "3" but I'm getting that too.  Why?

Ah, to be sure, to be sure!

The artwork on '4' looks pretty impressive. Well found Whitty!

I think 4 is the one with the cool art like the cutaway of the space ship etc. You can tell by the age and shape of the pages, 3 is a lot smaller and looks much newer and has whiter pages with what looks like an original story with Taylor or at least some other astronaut plus red photos and stuff about all the other movies.

4 looks like it doesn't have a POTA front cover unless the green coloured photo of the gorilla is the front and the painting of a pilot with a prop plane behind him is the back though I don't think so. Maybe only a small section of 4 is actually the POTA stuff?

        Mike,

I found a woman in Japan willing to translate the books for you--but given the number of pages, it would be for a fee. I don't know her rates (she's a friend of a friend, so she and I don't know each other), but here's my suggestion: Once you receive the books and have a better idea of what the job would entail, send me an e-mail containing a note for the translator, letting her know what you have in mind, describing the works to be translated, requesting rates and so forth. I can then forward it to my friend, who can pass it on to his contact. That way, she can get back to you directly, and you guys can see if a reasonable fee can be negotiated.

        Rich

You’d have to be an idiot to call Burton a bad director.

He did a shit job of POTA but nearly everything else he did was magic.

Same can be said for most of the POTA 2001 ACTORS too!

That’s why I was so damned surprised!

On paper it looked like it would be a great movie.

Emma Watts has signed a deal as president of Twentieth Century Fox. Met the new boss, same as the old boss: she's already been in the job but shared it with Alex Young. Now she's flying solo. Her contract is for 3 years. Hopefully that will include the production of a new POTA, otherwise we're in for a long wait. What will a woman's touch do? Maybe the apes can bake cookies?

The first I will reference is going to be known as the PLANET OF THE APES Manga 1971 (date is at the bottom of the back cover).

It’s the only one so far that is ALL Apes from cover (which is, as you might already have guessed, the BACK page) to cover.

I cannot see any copyright information, and I do seem to recall it’s the same “C” in a circle all over so my first conclusion (yet to be confirmed) is that it’s not official.

Size does matter, as the other Manga I bought is MUCH smaller – more about that later.

This Manga is about 180 cm (71 inches) wide and 255 cm (100 inches) tall.

It also spans a massive 250 pages.

        It’s divided into 6 chapters.

Before page 1 there’s a few full colour photo+drawing shots introducing the characters….then a bizarre picture (full colour) of the ship’s cockpit with a giant stoned monkey looking in (well his eyes are REALLY bloodshot!).

The story is bizarre, but not NEARLY as freaky as the other one (more later!).  Many liberties are taken and you will understand the penetrating pun I just attempted as things progress.

Here’s the cover, the back cover and the spine and a very bodgey effort to connect them….

Neil old chap – if you would be so kind as to load them up to files I’ll be scanning more depending on vocality of interest from the 5 people in this group

        Michael

        Hi Rich

Tim actually also mentioned a friend of a work colleague and I don’t think she’s charging!  J

I appreciate the offer but I am not paying one more cent after all I’ve already put out for these comics.

If anyone wants to put together a team and throw money at it please do.

Last time I was involved inn anything like it was the Argentinean comics and the outcome was that most of the POTA fans in the world think I faked a brain tumour.

        Fuck that.

        Michael

That was me--a friend of mine knows a woman in Japan who's willing it to translate it for you, for a fee. If you're interested, I can pass along your contact info to him, to send on to her.

It seems the new cover Moxy sent recently is for the BATTLE adaptation which appears in the second Manga I bought.  There’s also a DIFFERENT version of PLANET and a linking sequence of a page each of Beneath, Escape and Conquest (see the smaller book labeled “3”).

However it looks like the MANGA I bought (the little book pictured below) is a compilation (and I reckon published in 2000 or so) and the original is the one that’s cover was sent in by Moxy.

You were right Neil, the stuff he labeled from “4” is from 4 indeed – it’s a 1969 magazine which contains the cross section of the ship and the other fascinating artwork (glad I opted to get it too!) and then a whole bunch of NON-POTA mangas.

As suspected “2” is just an old mag with pics I’ve seen before so glad I didn’t get that!

And being Japanese these covers are all at the back – spine is at the right side!

By the way – if you look at 1 and 3 you’ll see they both say PLANET OF THE APES (in Japanese) and if you look at “2” and “4” you can see they have the same title and then on “4” you can see PLANET OF THE APES in Japanese in red (white background) writing directly below the 60 in a circle (looks like a price).

I'm very anxious to see these--I'm nearing completion on the encyclopedia, so it'd be interesting to see if there's anything in the mangas that would be worth incorporating. Incidentally, my friend's daughter is a manga fanatic who is learning Japanese. I've placed a call to see if she wouldn't mind helping with the translation--since she's a manga fan, it wouldn't be a chore for her, like it might be for others who don't read comics. She might even be willing to do it for free. I'll let you know.

It might be good to see if we can't find several translators....I also though of a friend of my sister's ...an American who lives IN Japan!

I'm very anxious to see these--I'm nearing completion on the encyclopedia, so it'd be interesting to see if there's anything in the mangas that would be worth incorporating. Incidentally, my friend's daughter is a manga fanatic who is learning Japanese. I've placed a call to see if she wouldn't mind helping with the translation- -since she's a manga fan, it wouldn't be a chore for her, like it might be for others who don't read comics. She might even be willing to do it for free. I'll let you know.

I don’t think we could get enough!

There’s a LOT of pages to be done.

          Let me know…

It might be good to see if we can't find several translators. ...I also though of a friend of my sister's ...an American who lives IN Japan !
