Subject: "Dawn" director's other POTA movie
.html
.html
I found reference to another POTA movie that "Dawn of the POTA" director Matt Reeves worked on. One when he was a kid.

Am I crazy or would that make a cool DVD extra?
Another budding filmmaker who made a POTA movie when he was a kid was young Peter Jackson. He went on to spend a fair amount of time in the '90's trying to get a POTA movie made with Roddy McDowall. And Jackson is something of the Godfather of these new POTA movies as the founder of WETA and the guy who turned Andy Serkis on to motion capture (and gave him his first ape role).
So Matt Reeves had Mego POTA toys, wanted to be a POTA gorilla and made a Super 8 POTA movie. If that doesn't qualify him as one of us, I don't know what does. One of us! One of us!

Subject: OT: "Rise" director beaming up to "Star Trek"?
.html
.html
With J. J. Abrams off doing "Star Wars", Paramount needs a director for "Star Trek 3", pronto. The 50th anniversary of the franchise is 2016. Scuttlebutt sez that director might be Rupert Wyatt, who began the adventures of CG Caesar. I think this actually coming to pass is a long shot. Wyatt is very particular about what he directs (thus he and Fox didn't see eye to eye on "Dawn", as Wyatt has said himself). He even turned down an early version of "Rise". If he did sign on, I would assume it's because they'd give him a degree of freedom. The recent "Star Trek Into Darkness" was something of a mess so I think Wyatt signing on would be a good thing for it.
The irony being that the director of "Dawn of the POTA" is Matt Reeves, Abrams' pal of 30+ years and his "Cloverfield" director. With "Star Trek" composer Michael Giacchino doing the music for "Dawn". Abrams is still slated to be producer of "Star Trek 3", so it would all be a nice cozy coincidence. I don't think it will happen but it sure would be fun if it did.
In the '60's and '70's "Star Trek" and POTA were the kings of the sci-fi hill until that upstart "Star Wars" came along. They shared many of the same creators and were both trailblazers in sci-fi merchandising. And both have shown incredible longevity, going on 5 decades. I'll always consider them kin. I don't know what Wyatt would see in "Trek" that he didn't have with "Dawn", but I'm rooting for this to happen.

Is this a spoiler? I dunno.
Judy Greer talks about her character Cornelia (Caesar's wife, oops! spoiler!). I don't know about you, but some of my fave POTA apes are women.
Zira, Lisa (technically the first ape to say "No"). And the TV show rocked the ladies (I particularly remember Carsia, but I like bad girls).
Greer got to see an early representation of her character and sez: "She's so beautiful and regal and feminine. I really felt like I was looking at a lady".

"WEDDED??!!"

Agreed though, the new franchise really needs some strong female characters like Zira.

I've been watching some "Battlestar Galactica" this week (the 2000's version) and it always reminds me of POTA. Why? First of all because it's a dark, apocalyptic sci-fi story that I think any POTA fan would appreciate (dark but with characters, like POTA, that get you through it). Second, "Battlestar"'s main writer/producer is Ron Moore, who is a big POTA fan. He actually seeded POTA references in the show and talks about his love of POTA in the DVD commentaries.
Perhaps the biggest connection is the nickname given to a major character, Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. She's called the "harbinger of death". If you don't know that as a POTA reference, you may hand in your POTA card and leave. I had the pleasure of bringing this up to the actress who played her, Katee Sackhoff, and telling her the POTA connection on the "Schmoes Know" podcast. Honestly, if I picked my Top 5 Science Fiction stuff, POTA and the new "Battlestar" would be in it. So telling her of the connection (she didn't know) was and is pretty cool to me.
So where does that leave you? Well, I'm just saying this so you'll seek out the new "Battlestar Galactica". I think POTA fans will see a lot that will resonate with them, and they'll get some fun POTA references as well.

Still haven't found the time to watch the new(ish) version, but I hope to some day. Of course, in the original pilot episode Lew Ayres played the pacifist President not far removed from Mandemus, nor indeed from his own personal principles.

I watched the last episode of "Lost" this week and I can’t get it out of my head (I'm a sap, I'll admit it), especially Michael "Dawn of the POTA " Giacchino's music. So I thought I'd share it. Obviously it's spoilers for those planning to watch the show some day. But for those who gave up on the show's complexity and want to see how it ended, or those who just want a taste of the new POTA musical maestro, here you go.

Subject: POTA beats "Star Trek" again
.html
.html
This weekend the new "Star Trek" movie "ST Into Darkness" hit Japan, it's last stop before retiring. It's total is now at $ 458.7 million worldwide, so it opened to about $ 5 million there. It seems unlikely it will reach the $ 481 million "Rise of the POTA" made during it's worldwide run, so once again the apes rule! We win again!

The last "Star Trek" (2009) earned a total of $385 million ww. It was well-received but there's a notorious lack of interest internationally for ST. Paramount made a concerted effort to increase the international take this time, having multiple star-studded international premieres and insisting it be released in 3D (ST2009 and "Rise" weren't released in 3D; "Dawn of the POTA" is going a step further and actually filmed in 3D). That plus the goodwill of the last ST movie certainly helped but not enough for it to pass half a $ billion or set box office phasers on stun.

Adding interest to this competition is that childhood pals J. J. Abrams and Matt Reeves are in charge of these franchises. If "Dawn" does at least as well as "Rise" at the box office, Reeves gets bragging rights for having the top movie of the duo (a moot point in 2015 when J. J.'s "Star Wars" hits). To top it off, rumor is that "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt is up for "Star Trek 3" (a rumor that hasn't been denied). It's starting to make for a soap opera that's fascinating, captain.

Both "Star Trek" and POTA redefined the sci-fi franchise in the late '60's, early '70's. Dammit, they were Megos together! Almost 50 years later they are credited (along with "2001: A Space Odyssey") for bringing intelligence and allegory to sci-fi screens. POTA fans might have felt a little jealousy when the "Star Trek" cult took off, resulting in 12 movies and 5 TV shows, plus nonstop merchandise. So it's fun that POTA gets a little victory these days. It's just a little friendly competition between '60's siblings. Both will continue to live long and prosper.

Keri Russell stars in a new movie in limited release called "Austenland" (about a Disneyland for fans of author Jane Austen). While promoting that, she's asked by MTV about "Dawn" and calls it "beautiful and big and epic". She digs that a director who specializes in "intimacy" is doing a big summer blockbuster and loved filming with Andy Serkis in the wilds of Vancouver. Let's go to the tape:

.html

"Dawn of the POTA" seems to be doing it right. According to actor Nick Thurston, who plays >CENSORED!<, they are going back for reshoots in October. Sounds like they are cutting it together, seeing what they need and getting it sooner rather than later. According to the director they moved the movie back from May to July because of all the FX it will need. This really does sound like a visual ape-stravaganza. Plus actually filming in 3D, a rarity.
I think this is the big movie that "Apes" fans have been waiting for. POTA has been a monkey on Fox's back for so long, it sounds like they are rolling the dice and seeing one way or another how big the audience can get. Whether we like the script or not remains to be seen but production-wise I think this will be as good as it gets since the original made jaws drop 45 years ago. So it makes sense to get those reshoots done early and let the FX artisans do their magic.

Yeah, but whats the fun of 'just looking'?

Besides, once you're in on a FB group you can still just sit idly by and watch all the discussions if that's what you want to do. Just like here.

Needless to say, a discussion group, whether it be here or on FB, still relies on participation in order to be successful and fruitful.

The way I see it is I'll get my PotA dose wherever I can. And right now, FB has got an awful lot.  But the more, the merrier, especially when the people really know their PotA. So I do hope you and all the others in these forums check out the many FB groups someday. Just like these discussion groups, there are different FB groups that cater to different segments of PotA fandom there (TV, collectibles, etc).

Why not make it accessible to everyone instead of behind locked doors (password, etc.)? You might get more traffic if people can see what it is.

Rumors have spread that Rupert "Rise of the POTA" Wyatt will continue in the '60's sci-fi reboot biz with the next "Star Trek". You can't do better than go straight to the director of the last two Treks, J. J. (lifelong friend and movie partner of Matt "Dawn of the POTA" Reeves) Abrams. While promoting the release of "Star Trek Into Darkness" on DVD, he was asked that very question. While it's too soon in the process to choose a director, he said "we'd be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert". Which is certainly not a no.
After blasting into the stratosphere with "Rise" (which made more money than any "Star Trek" film) and not agreeing with Fox on the direction of "Dawn", Wyatt has yet to land on his next movie (he's reportedly very picky) so it'll be interesting to see what he chooses. Hopefully he'll live long and prosper.

Summer is over (technically it ends on the 22nd but if you want to throw that at me I'll beat your ass). The next time it's summer it will be the summer of "Dawn of the POTA". It sounds like they're throwing a lot of money at it but of course the script is still a question mark. So let's get it out. Where do you want the sequel to go, based on what you dug (or didn't) with "Rise"?
Me, I know they can't go too far into the future but I'd like to see the origins of what we know as the POTA: apes wearing clothes, talking, maybe the origin of Ape Shall Not Kill Ape. I'm sure some of you can be more inventive than that so let's get to it! Based on the pressures of leadership, should Caesar become a bad guy?

Michael "Dawn of the POTA" Giacchino has done his share of Pixar movies ("The Incredibles", "Cars 2", "Ratatouille", an Oscar win for "Up"). But the composer has never scored Pixar's signature tale, "Toy Story", until now. Tonight on TV is "Toy Story of Terror", featuring his music. Here's a recent article where he talks about his approach to making images sing. Maybe it will provide clues to what he'll bring to POTA's already storied musical history.

It's been announced that the trailer accompanying "The Hobbit 2" this December will be... "Spider-man 2"? No! It should be "Dawn of the POTA". Why? Well, let me tell you...
Once upon a time there were these 3 movies called "Lord of the Rings". One of the breakout stars of those was a motion capture dude named Andy Serkis, who played Gollum. Andy went on to play an ape named King Kong for "Rings" director Peter Jackson. Jackson also helped found the FX company WETA, which made those movies possible. Andy and WETA went on to do the new POTA movies, including "Dawn". Besides, Jackson was one of the first people ever to try to do a modern POTA movie. Furthermore (sounds like a land in Middle Earth), "Dawn" and "Hobbit" were both filmed in 3D. Yes, I said filmed. Did I stutter? Did Spidey 2 film in 3D? I dunno, but I doubt it. They probably transferred it's ass into 3D after, like they do with most films. "Hobbit" and "Dawn" are like a Rhesus peanut butter cup, they'd taste good together.
Are we going to just stand by and let this happen? Write your Congressman! Call President Obama! No, wait. All we have to do is talk about it privately among ourselves. The NSA will pick it up. This will not stand! But for now, we'll have to assume there's no God.

The expected October reshoots for "Dawn" did happen and actor Nick Thurston sez they're done now. Sounds like it was just motion capture work. Indeed, James Cameron and actress Zoe Saldana came by to check it out as they prep the "Avatar" sequels (they used his facility in Manhattan Beach, CA). Of course it's not over 'til it's over - "Rise" reshot it's ending a month before it's release - but it sounds like everything is going like clockwork.

      Subject: Summer 2013 lessons
      .html
      .html
Is it me or were the last summer's movies kind of "blah"? No, it wasn't me. Hollywood seems to be reeling (again) from a summer that didn't live up to expectations. It's easy to laugh at the "lessons" Hollywood is learning, which audiences have complained about for years (it doesn't matter how much money you throw at a movie or how incredible the FX, just give us a good story, OK?). Maybe the signature problem this summer was the huge money spent on would-be franchises like "Lone Ranger", "Pacific Rim" and "World War Z" before they knew if audiences were even interested. These were $200 -250 million movies.
This "Hollywood Reporter" article about the situation mentions some upcoming Fox budgets. Doesn't mention "Dawn" but sez the new "X-Men" has a $200 million budget ("Rise" beat every "X-Men" movie at the box office) and their Moses movie (produced by POTA producers Chernin Entertainment) cost $150 million. It suggests Fox has their biggest budgets in many a moon and that might reflect on "Dawn" too. But I have a feeling "Dawn" (like "Rise") will put it's story first, and that might make the difference.

I am currently negotiating to have Neil Gaiman (probably best known for being the Author of Coraline, but he has also contributed to writing new Do Who episodes) involved in a new TV Show project.

              He’s a friend of a friend.

If all goes well, people may just be talking about Dr Who and Planet of the Apes as examples of how you return and old TV Show to the glory days!

The '60's were perhaps the Big Bang of modern science fiction, with "Planet of the Apes", "Star Trek", "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Lost in Space". But before all that, "Dr. Who" premiered 50 years ago today (Nov. 23). It was science fiction's longest running franchise and is still going strong. It started after the BBC's coverage of JFK's assassination. It even predates the rock band The Who! Fifty years later the Whovians have a right to celebrate and they're doing just that.                  I certainly know who Neil Gaiman is. And if he wrote a POTA story that would be big time.
But by TV show resurrection I assume you mean new stories. If you mean new stuff with Harper/Naughton, that ship has sailed.

If you get a chance to see the pretty funny spoof film 'The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot', in which some of the (actual) previous Doctors plan their revenge for not having been included in the 50th anniversary special, there's an unexpected cameo from Peter Jackson when he notices Sylvester McCoy has disappeared from the set of The Hobbit. There, that's almost back on topic. That would be very cool to get Neil Gaiman behind POTA - best of luck Michael.

Well, the toy companies seem excited so maybe they know something we don't. All I know is the director says he wanted to keep the apes primitive a little longer (which Fox agreed with). I guess the "Rise" director was going to move along their evolution more.

Pop Culture Shock has tweeted they have a license to make "Dawn of the POTA" goodies. Who the >CENSORED!< are they? Looks like they do statues and busts ("Is this some kind of bust?" "Yes, it's very impressive. But we need to ask you a few questions"). NECA has the action figures covered. Unlike "Rise", doesn't look like fans will go away empty handed this time.

So what of these upcoming novels tied into "Dawn of the POTA"? The novelization by Alex Irvine (7/22/14) is pretty self-explanatory.

But the prequel by Greg Keyes (6/3/14) would seem like a good opportunity to novelize "Rise" as well as show what happened afterwards, up to "Dawn". Maybe even call it "Rise of the POTA". Of course there was never a novelization of the original POTA movie either. I don't want to be THAT guy who complains about novels for sequels but not for the original (actually, I don't want to be THAT guy who says he doesn't want to be THAT guy). But it would seem they've handed Greg the keys (get it? Keyes?) for a great opportunity to retell "Rise".

The teaser for "Dawn of the POTA" has been rated and is ready to go. Runs a little over 1 minute. Probably it will arrive in the next week or so. Maybe sooner. Could be mostly a rehash of the ComicCon trailer (which Fox's "X-Men" recently did) but that's OK since most of us haven't seen it. Will probably be light on apes but will give us an idea of the setting (one reviewer of the ComicCon trailer said the humans' existence looked very "Terminator"). Bring it on.

It comes out on June 17, 2014. So I guess it will be about designs and so forth, even though we know they just press a button and apes magically appear. But there are set designs and so forth. It retails for $40.00 hardcover.
