I think it's a given that Koba will be the
villain in "Dawn of the POTA" (screenwriter Mark Bomback has a picture of him on
his twitter page). Most of the apes have already been accounted for. Imdb lists
Andy Serkis as Caesar, Karin Konoval returns as Maurice the orangutan, Terry
Notary is back as Rocket. But actor/stuntman Chris Gordon played Koba in "Rise"
and he's doing the new "Godzilla". Are they going to cast someone else like they
did Judy Greer as Cornelia? Do we still have a cool casting surprise
left? <.html <.html

There's not a huge library of POTA books out
there like there is for such popular franchises as "Star Wars", "Star Trek" or
"Lord of the Rings". But POTA has managed to dip it's feet into some interesting
takes. There's a book about it's politics, a collectibles book, a chronology, an
encyclopedia, a well researched history. And now there's a book about it's
philosophy. What's left? I think it would lend itself to one of those big coffee
table books with nice color pictures and posters. And I've always thought it
would be a natural for one of those "The Science of..." books.
"POTA and Philosophy" hits today.

Check out this puppy. There's also some spoilers
about what happens here on imdb. I'll just say it sounds very much like the
"Battle" dynamic, but set in old human surroundings.

Just wanted to let those who may be interested that the book I've just spent the last year or so (interrupted by family medical emergencies) doing 12 illustrations for, has just been
released by Airship 27 Productions ( http://www.airship27.com/)
THE ACE G-MAN RETURNS!
Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to announce their fifth release of the year; DAN FOWLER G-Man Vol II. Volume One was published two years ago and well received by pulp fans warranting a second foray into the world of
this classic tough guy federal agent.
One of the greatest pulp heroes of old returns in four gun-blazing new adventures. Dan Fowler, ace investigator for the FBI, is back action, this time facing off against quartet of deadly villains; from a hideous monkey
faced gang boss to avenging the murder of an uncover agent. Along the way he'll team up with a colorful assortment of allies from a sexy jewel thief to the none other than Jim Anthony, the Super Detective.
Writers Derrick Ferguson, Aaron Smith, Joshua Reynolds and B.C. Bell have whipped up four of the most fast paced, nail biting crime thrillers ever to grace any pulp collection. Dan Fowler is an iconic pulp hero who,
during the course of his original series, battled criminals and outlaws from rural hick bootleggers to the organized syndicates of New York and Chicago.
"Dan Fowler was by far one of the most successful classic pulp characters ever created," declares Airship 27 Productions' Managing Editor, Ron Fortier. "If you start talking about any kind of crime
fighting series, pulp fans will immediately bring up his name. It is synonymous with this particular genre of pulps. He was pretty much the Dick Tracy of the pulps. Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to be bringing him
back into the spotlight of new pulp fiction with these original thrill-a-minutes tales."
Wrapped up by a gorgeous cover from Brian McCulloch and featuring wonderful black and white interior illustrations by Neil T. Foster, DAN FOWLER G-MAN Vol II was designed by Rob Davis and edited by Ron Fortier. So move
over Elliot Ness and Melvin Purvis, here comes the great G-Man of them all, DAN FOWLER!!!

I'm digging the graffiti on the sets. It really
looks like the humans have gone through 15 years of hell. Here's one with "ALZ

I think the zones are the quarantine areas the

I brought up before the fictional drink
Slusho! and it's legacy in the films of Matt "Dawn of the POTA" Reeves. It's a
kind of in-joke for his buddy J.J. Abrams' stuff, making it's first appearance
in the 2nd episode of "Alias" in 2001 (the year Tim Burton's POTA movie came
out; Whoa!). Nothing more was made of it until I guess they decided to resurrect
it for "Cloverfield" (produced by Abrams, directed by Reeves) in 2008. Slusho!
was a big part of it's guerrilla marketing campaign and a major character wore a
Slusho! T-shirt in the film. Meanwhile, they decided to cross-pollinate it in
shows like "Heroes" and "Fringe", and it appeared as well in Abrams' films "Star
Trek" and "Super 8". But mostly Reeves seems to have adopted it. His film
"Cloverfield" is considered THE Slusho! production. And he went on to portray it
prominently in his next (non-Abrams) film "Let Me In". In fact it determines the
fate of a major character.
So? Well, perchance there will be a Slusho!
reference in his next film, which happens to be "Dawn of the POTA". Now how much
would you pay? But wait, there's more! Anyone here seen the Abrams show
"Fringe"? Raise your hands. No one? I've been catching the reruns on the Science
Channel. It's a pretty good sci-fi series, good acting, good characters, fits in
well with Abrams' other big arc shows like "Alias" and "Lost". Especially for
people who like "X-Files" stuff.
Anyway, Reeves has cast one of the actors from
"Fringe", Kirk Acevedo (he played Charlie), in "Dawn" (he plays Carver). Not
only that but Acevedo had probably the ultimate Slusho! moment on "Fringe". His
character was replaced by a "shape shifter" from the series' alternate timeline
and he needed to drink mercury to keep going. So he goes into a liquor store and
gets some thermometers for the mercury. And, get this, he pours the mercury into
a Slusho! cup to drink it. That's so twisted, man!
So will Acevedo get to do a Slusho! encore in
"Dawn of the POTA"? As usual for POTA, time will tell. Maybe he'll be running
from the apes and trip over an old Slusho! sign. Or maybe the apes will get on
his case - "Hey human, we're going to show you who's boss!"- so he sez, "I
really think we should sit down calmly, drink a Slusho! and talk
things over". Slusho! and POTA, two great tastes that taste great
together.
Fun fact: So linked now is Slusho! to the
Abramsverse that when an action figure was made of his company Bad Robot's
mascot, it came with a Slusho!:

POTA as envisioned by novelist Darryl Gregory
comes to an end this September with POTA Giant. This was the storyline with the
airships, etc. that was controversial to POTA fans but comic book fans seemed to
dig it's flights of fancy. It was the main POTA storyline for a long time
starting in Ape-ril 2011 and then continued as specials. Gregory is pleased that
he was allowed to finish the story.

I am glad that mess will be put to rest though, it was nowhere near the mark, especially since they kept saying it was "set in the original continuity"... Had they just said it was their own take on the APES
name, that would have been one thing, but to say it fit in with the films was just nuts on their part...

This month marks 40 years of "Battle For the
POTA" (the "POTA Revisited" and "POTA as American Myth" books say June 13). So
what? Generally the least regarded of the movies (except maybe Burton's), it
nevertheless brought some groovy things to the POTA mythology. Er, um, no wait,
I'll think of something!
Aldo. Ricky the squirrel. The Caesar statue's
tear. That darn bus. "Someday you'll be as tall as a king". Where would we be
without them?
And with the new movie looking more and more like
a remake of "Battle" (a "Battle" royal, if you will), it's a good time for the
black sheep of the family.
Happy Birthday,
"Battle"! <.html <.html

Price is steep though and these is definite aging along the fold borders (extra blue). But still very nice.

used in rise expanded the vocal chord to articulate. the drug gave them intelligence, that doesn't mean it changed them physically. all they need to do is make a reference that this drug also is changing their
vocal chords. i thought when caesar talked in the end it ruined the film somewhat for me. the sign language caesar used was great and more real. to have him talk in the end without explaining it was to hollywood. i know
they need the apes to talk for the movie. but can u please put something in the movie to justify it more. <.html

"Dawn of the POTA" has wrapped shooting on those
big city sets and they are being torn down. I don't think the film is totally
wrapped yet but now NOLA traffic can get back to normal (at least until "Midday

some nice financial incentives).

This actor is playing an ape in "Dawn" and sez
they are about to start filming on the "epic" ape village set (probably why
Cornelia is on the way). They are shooting near a real abandoned theme park
(which might be good to use in a scene) in New Orleans.
Here's my take on the story so far (it's not a
spoiler since it's just my guess). It sounds like "Battle" is the template with
"good" and "bad" groups of both apes and humans. Of course Caesar serves the
same role as the original Caesar, trying to keep the peace. You've got Koba as
the bad ape like Aldo, who wants revenge or to take over the human territory.
You've got the good humans. I think that would be represented by actors Jason
Clarke, Keri Russell and Kodi Smit-McPhee (maybe a family?). Perhaps that
shot that was released shows them as a human band going off on their
own and befriending Caesar. They are like MacDonald & Co.
Then there's the bad humans, represented by Gary
Oldman, the Kolp of the story. It's said his character has a military and police
background, so he leads the attack on the apes. Looks like the apes and humans
battle it out in Old San Francisco. Maybe the Golden Gate Bridge separates
them, with the apes in the redwoods and the humans in the old cities. Can't we
all just get along? <.html <.html

I have to agree with you about the talking at the end of Rise, it lost a chunk of plausibility right there. Personally I'd feel that apes are more menacing when they can't communicate
with humans. But, you know, this IS Hollywood we're talking about, and the industry will look for simplified plots like this in return for getting a big-budget movie made.

Cornelius is a pretty common name in the very southern part of Ireland - in fact my wife, who's from there, assumed for some time after we met that my name was shortened version of

The drug the apes are given would have to
be a magic potion in a sense. There's a lot besides talking that would have to
happen before there could be a POTA. We just have to accept the drug works so we
can get to the good stuff. Maybe the drug activated a dormant gene that was
holding them back? A lot of science fiction is no different from fantasy. The
difference is they use science instead of pixie dust so it's slightly more
plausible. A century ago the idea that we could build machines that could take
us to the moon would have been unbelievable. The saving grace is that
science has often been proved wrong and we learn new things that move
us forward.
"Rise" brought POTA into the mad scientist genre,
which has a long esteemed history and really kicked off science fiction
("Frankenstein", "Dr. Moreau"). It's art, not science.

Yes, you're right. But the premise of the original/Beneath/Escape suggested that apes would evolve over centuries - unlikely but plausible within the sci-fi genre. But Battle, and the
end of Rise, and probably Dawn, will state outright that an individual ape can simply acquire speech and even become a scientific genius just by having the right training or taking a wonder drug. The plausible thing to
do would be to skip forward a few generations between movies. That just means you can't have the continuity of a returning character though (unless they travel through some sort of bizarre time warp, but that's
just ridiculous!).

To be honest, it's probably a bigger stretch that
apes would evolve on their own (they haven't in millions of years). It's more
believable to me that a POTA would happen through scientific tampering. Probably
time would help. Maybe "Rise" would be more believable if there was a prologue
where the apes were given a drug and then we go forward two centuries where they
are developing speech, etc. Or maybe a scientist with a specific goal of
tampering with their brain and throat tissue to create a speaking monster.
But I think "Rise" did a good job. They wanted to
tell the story of a specific ape and the goal is storytelling, not a scientific
thesis. Rick Jaffa sez in his "Rise" commentary they got more into the science
but it just bogged the script down. As long as it seemed believable, the
audience was ready to accept it and move on. They had Caesar talking for
dramatic reasons and now that they've done that, it shows the apes evolve
rapidly, so no need to go much further in time for "Dawn" (I guess it's 15 years
later). They want to get there quicker and have used creative license. No
different than sound in space in many sci-fi movies. It's not so much dumbing
things down as expediency in storytelling.

To be fair, Caesar was exposed to the drug while still developing in the womb. That might give him a head start over his contemporary apes. We'll have to see if that idea is supported
in the sequel though, or if Rocket will suddenly be talking to Caesar about the consequences of eating cookies across multiple highways of time.

Looks like "Dawn of the POTA" has two more weeks
to shoot and then they can concentrate on making a monkey out of Andy Serkis and
the gang. Sounds like they had a lot of night shooting. I reckon the penultimate
ape/human fight will be at night. You OK with that? It's always darkest
before the dawn.
'Twould be groovy if they could sellabrate the
end of shooting with a trip to Comic Con on July 20th but we just don't live in

Fox has announced that attendees of next week's
San Diego Comic-Con can get their stinkin' paws on a POTA blu-ray with exclusive
cover art. Before you look at the cover I hope you've had enough sleep or you
might nod off. There's also exclusives for Fox's '50's classics "The Fly" and
"The Day the Earth Stood Still".
Fox has time reserved for late Saturday July 20th
to present something, but no details. Probably "Wolverine" and "X-Men" but maybe
something for "Dawn of the POTA".

Represent! Looks like "Dawn of the POTA" will be
at Comic-Con next weekend ( Sat. July 20th around 4ish). Andy Serkis, Jason
Clarke, Keri Russell (you know her as Felicity) and director Matt Reeves are
scheduled to ape-tend. Could there be a teaser trailer? Perchance. I'm sure
they've been working on the apes all along so they might have something to show.
I'd be interested in a scene between humans so we have an idea where it's going.
If not, I'm sure will learn something new if they're bringing the gang down.

Subject: Matt Reeves talks "Dawn of the POTA"
"Dawn of the POTA" is going to get a lot more
familiar this Saturday at Comic-Con when director Matt Reeves and his cast do a
panel. And to kick things off, here's an interview he did that just has me
grooving. But first of all, he doesn't plan to show much footage. Just "limited
little bits" and no ape stuff. The reason "Dawn" got pushed back to July is
indeed because of the FX. It sounds like we are in for an epic
show.
The basic thing is, those who loved "Rise"
are in good hands, it seems. Reeves is a big POTA fan since childhood, but he
LOVED "Rise" and to continue from that is what he's about. "I wanted to extend
what I thought was achieved so brilliantly, the emotional connection with
Caesar...It's definitely a bigger ape world, but it is still centered on Andy
Serkis as Caesar, it's his POV... I wanted to make sure that the emotional life
of Caesar was the way the story carried forward. You have to make Caesar's
movie, you have to think about what matters to him the most".
It turns out that Reeves wants more of what was
in "Rise", showing a slower evolution of the apes that the studio and Rupert
Wyatt had planned. So it will be more in keeping with what we saw in the last
film, the apes still developing. Reeves didn't think he'd have the leeway he did
but the studio liked his ideas and let him go in a different direction. Almost
as if they said to a fan, "Come on up and try it!". Reeves sez: "The apes story
is a through-the-looking-glass way of looking at what we are. By what's going on
in the internal lives of the apes we are exploring ourselves, our impulses, our
society. So much is roiling inside Caesar. He has a rational side separate from
the apes, they're all instinct. We are seeing how Caesar becomes this
leader."
And hold onto your hats. He sez "this leads to
the original film... That is where it's going".
It sounds like a very ambitious film with all
it's sets and location shooting. It's going to push mo-cap into realism like
never before (Reeves has a rep for delivering believability; that's why he was
chosen for "Cloverfield", which is supposed to be really taking place on the
other end of a camera). The CG in "Rise" didn't work as well when the apes were
animated instead of mo-capped, and he's working to limit animation. And he
picked D.P. Michael Seresin "because I wanted the lighting look to be very real.
I want it to feel as if we're making an epic film, very grounded, we're lighting
with real (location) light, so the effects that are so amazing in "Rise" and
"Avatar" we're putting in this environment... this is the first movie at this
level to do native 3D on an enormous canvas and mo-cap that is 95% shot on
location".
He also gave away a couple of things. As I
figured, actors Jason Clarke, Keri Russell and Kodi Smit-McPhee play a family.
Caesar is also in a family way, having had a son (played by adult actor Nick
Thurston, so he's grown) with Cornelia (Reeves recently had a son). And
actor Toby Kebbell takes the role of Koba this time.
Anyway, I recommend reading this two page
interview. I am totally on board. If the final film matches Reeves' ambitions,
we're in for a treat!

"Dawn of the POTA" seemed to get lost in the
shuffle Saturday between the superhero news (Batman will be in the next Superman
movie) and cast reveals (a who's who of "X-Men" actors; the cast of "Guardians
of the Galaxy"). But hey, it IS Comic-Con and superheroes should be front and
center. "Dawn" managed to show a reel and give us a taste of where it's heading,
still shooting with a year to go.
First of all, about spoilers. Everyone has their
own ideas about what those are. I consider a spoiler to be story-related ("A
kills B"), not setup or background given out by the filmmakers
themselves (like whether or not Caesar has kids when the story starts). If
you want to be pure as the driven snow when the movie comes out and are sure you
won't inadvertently be exposed to a trailer or TV spot beforehand, I suggest
avoiding anything that has the title "Dawn of the POTA" on it. For the rest of
us who can take being violated a little, let's continue.
The two big takeaways I got from this is
"location! location! location!" and "emotion! emotion! emotion!". First of all,
I dig that they are actually shooting this in 3D ("native 3D", as they call it).
This is rare for live-action movies. The bad rap 3D has been getting is
partly because films are converted after they've been shot (and partly
because many theaters aren't willing to pay to show 3D properly). It's a pain in
the ass to actually film in 3D and most productions won't be bothered. And the
same can be said for motion capture, pain in the ass. It's been pointed out
repeatedly at this Comic-Con that not only is "Dawn" going to the
trouble, but they are doing so 90 - 95% on actual locations (instead of filming
in front of green screens). For motion capture in particular this is
groundbreaking. So I'm interested to see how it comes together and how close to
believable this is ("Rise" was good but they were still working things out
and sometimes it showed).
As for the new director Matt Reeves, my take on
him is he's a talented guy who LOVES POTA. He's said as a kid he wanted to BE an
ape and feels that "Rise" finally gave him the opportunity to see things from
the ape POV. He wants to continue that with "Dawn". Reeves is a director who
runs on emotion. In the recent issue of "Empire" dedicated to his childhood
buddy J. J. Abrams, Abrams talked about the show they did together ("Felicity",
starring Keri "Dawn" Russell) and said: "I always wanted to make things funnier,
Matt always wanted to make things more emotional". And that's the feeling I got
with Reeves' comments about "Dawn". When Reeves was asked who we're supposed to
root for in the movie, he said, "Everyone". Both the apes and the humans have
families that are front and center, and the emphasis will be on the future
generations and whether they can get along. While most summer blockbusters are
looking for the next smackdown, it sounds like "Dawn" will follow the lead of
"Rise" (and the original movies) in being more complex. Will that hurt it at the
box office?
Reeves has also brought up that this will "lead"
to the 1968 film. Does that mean literally or figuratively? Reeves is the first
POTA director who is a dyed in the wool "Apes" fan since he was a kid, and the
temptation to literally connect to the revered original is there. The closest he
came to elaborating on that was telling MTV that it's "a trajectory of some
parallel universe to the 1968 film". What? Well, it is possible that the
"Rise/Dawn" timeline could lead to Zauis' Ape City. If we use the parallel
universes that are now the bread and butter of physics. The ship sent to
Mars in "Rise" can't be Taylor's but if Taylor's ship arrived from a parallel
universe it could work. Reeves' bud J. J. made the new "Star Trek"s both a
reboot and an offshoot of the originals (with a little help from Leonard Nimoy).
Time will tell if that's where Reeves is heading.
Anyway, I'm all in for this sequel until further
notice. It looks like Fox is behind it this time (instead of slipping it
through the back door like "Rise") and the
director is a solid filmmaker who is a big POTA fan as well. Things look
good.
Here's the best recap I've read of the footage
that was shown. Hopefully Fox will make it available to us stay at
homers:
MTV did a live pre-interview with the gang.
Not a lot is talked about, they mostly just monkey around, but it's fun. Thanks
to Al for making it available:
