    I believe you Jeff.

That does not translate into believing someone else though.

My comment was genuine, not sarcastic.

But as you say – you know him.

It's not even loyalty. Bill and I haven't spoken since 2010. I consider Bill a friend but he stopped taking my calls and I just said, ">CENSORED!< it!".

I'm just honestly talking about the Bill I know. I think the JFK thing is apt. When it comes to Bill, I'm on the inside. But I look at the JFK thing as you look at Bill. Those close to it say, "Oswald did it". But I'm not so sure. If Bill showed a residual check online you could still assume it's a fake. It really is "the rabbit hole" that I've encountered trying to dope out this JFK thing. What is the truth and what is proof? In the end everyone knows what they (think) they know.

Jeff, I love your loyalty and I wish I could find more people who stick up for their friends like you do.

You and I both speak straight from the heart.  We just disagree on this one.

I respect your position. But there's a difference between knowing someone and not knowing someone (even if you've talked to them). Bill and I have been through a lot together, including living together in a mobile home for months and months in 2008. I just know him so well. He's an earnest guy, a good guy (maybe to a fault, he's very conservative and "traditional" America) and his POTA stuff is a point of pride (as it should be). As far as the residual check, we literally got to his place and it was in the mail he picked up. It wasn't something he had waiting for me. So I know what I know about him.

Somehow this reminded me of the JFK assassination. I'm working on the history of the "new" POTA movies for "Ape Chronicles" and of course Oliver Stone and the JFK assassination are intimately linked. Personally, I believe in a government conspiracy based on the books I've read but there's also the idea of "prove it" vs. those close to the events who say it is as the official version says. Again, I know what I know about Bill but I respect those who say they need more proof.

No one ever debated you saw his residual checks Jeff.

It doesn’t mean (1) what you saw were not fakes; or (2) if they are genuine, that this is evidence of Bill having shot scenes that were deleted.

I don’t think you are a con man Jeff.

The videos have now been found and they were on Bill’s Facebook page.

I also did not say he is a con man.

I said he has an answer for everything.

It is my experience that people with an answer to everything tend to be con men.

If you don’t think he is then that’s nice for you Jeff, but don’t pretend you can prove he isn’t.

Per Facebook, Bill is not a con man. I've seen his residual check from the POTA TV show, so if Bill is a con man, so am I. I don't know why that Youtube vid was taken down but I know Bill was proud of it and I doubt he was behind it's removal. Last I saw of Bill he was down on things but that's his prerogative.

Hoffman was found dead at the too young age of 46. Besides being a great actor, he sported a POTA T-shirt in the music video "Try" from the movie "Boogie Nights" (starring Mark "POTA2001" Wahlberg). I guess it's not on youtube but it is on the "Boogie Nights" special ed DVD. Another talent leaves us too early.

Gary Oldman is making the rounds promoting the "Robocop" remake and "Total Film" asked him about "Dawn". He sez it's "a fantastic story. It's a cracker... I've seen 3 minutes of an ape that was rendered. And the technology, it seems that since "Rise of the POTA" it looks like it's come on a hundred fold. It's breathtaking, the thing I saw. But the story is fantastic and Matt Reeves is a great director. Yeah, it's going to be a monster, I think."

As we know, the NECA company will soon unleash a ton of POTA stuff, both old and new versions. This isn't POTA related but I thought it was a cool story anyway. Craig Windrix, the brother of NECA's main sculptor Kyle Windrix, came down with advanced stomach cancer and was given a short time to live (that's not the cool part). Both brothers' fave movie is "Aliens" so NECA decided to create an "Aliens" figure in his honor. Fox gave their blessing to release the figure in stores and so Craig is now part of "Aliens" history. He passed away Thursday but lived to see his figure released.

Gary Oldman continues the "Robocop" tour and talked a little about where his character is coming from in "Dawn". Mostly just background but those who want to be pure as the driven snow for this movie can move along. Sounds like his character is not an out and out villain and has shadings, which was a good thing about the original POTA movies. Oldman calls him "a sort of hero of the piece". He also says the director wanted to focus on the humans and their society in this movie. Click on the interview if you want to know more.

Toy Fair is this weekend in New York. Probably the NECA POTA line will be unveiled. In fact, here's Koba from "Dawn", courtesy of MTV. Of course, this could be a spoiler for those who don't even want to know what the apes look like (good luck with that). But I don't think it's a surprise to anybody who saw "Rise" that Koba will probably be the big bad.

    Subject: Fandom....
    .html
    .html

So regarding fandom - my article will start with the fact that most fans were created when they first saw the original movies or TV Shows as kids aged 7-16 and the typical fan is therefore around 50 years old. I have net very few fans who fell in love with Planet of the Apes after seeing Tim Burton's movie in 2001, but I have met a few who saw the ORIGINAL Planet of the Apes movie because they got it to rent free with the Burton movie and liked the original better then became fans. I am yet to meet a "RISE" fan (probably more because they have no merchandise to let their addiction grow!).

The first attempt to meet the needs of fans was the UK Fan Club so I really want to get as much together as I can about this and even though the regular magazines were rubbish, I'd like to get scans of these and include links so they are out there. If Hunter Goatley is willing, I'd like him to host these scans (when it comes to catering to fans Hunter's site has to be right up there). Greg Plonowski could you please ask Hunter if he'd be interested and maybe invite him to the group?

The next really significant thing to fans was Ape Chronicles. Terry Hoknes and Jeff K were the main characters in this development so I'll be touching base with both to get their input.

Other fan magazines came along (was it APE FAN that did two copies?) and yes I'd love a refresher on details. Again if we can get them and link scans it would be a treat.

Of course Simian Scrolls came along and suddenly we had a regular fanzine to look forward to again - I'll check in with John Roche to make sure the info on Scrolls is accurate.

In 1997 the World Wide Web made a Planet of the Apes Yahoo! Group (originally intended for a small group to role play ape characters they chose) the meeting place for Planet of the Apes fans everywhere. There was also Valerie's group dedicated to the TV Show fans. A few years later Neil Foster and I created the Planet of the Apes Discussion Group and I think it's fair to say our small community was overwhelmed by fan-made offerings from both groups that exceeded all expectations and challenged many professional Planet of the Apes projects!

I'll ask Greg P to help me remember all the fan based projects and the participants but highlights would have to be Neil Foster's comics and Greg P's trading cards!

I'll conclude by saying that it remains to be seen what impact the new movies will have, and this information will probably be available around 2025 when the kids who are loving them now my return to them after they finish discovering girls/boys, drugs and rock and roll.

Please chime in with comments and or suggestions....

Sounds good. I don't think kids drop fandom to discover sex, drugs and rock and roll anymore. Fandom is generally accepted now.
There seems to be a lot of "Rise" fans on the internet but it was set in the here and now. Franchises need to create their own "other world" for people to really get "into" them ("Star Trek", "Star Wars", "Lord of the Rings", "Harry Potter"). Maybe that will happen with "Dawn". We're still on the cusp of POTA breaking out, as we have been for 20 years.

Subject: Matt Reeves talks "Dawn of the POTA"
    .html
    .html
I picked up the Feb. issue of "Empire" magazine, their picks for the Top 25 movies of 2014. Their "Dawn" section includes some comments from director Reeves (as well as a cool production painting). I don't think this is spoilery, it's more the tone of the movie.
So how did Reeves become the director? As they say, it's who you know. When Fox and "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt didn't see eye to eye on the sequel, Reeves had already been talking to "Apes" producer Dylan Clarke about working together. The two were already talking about "Apes" casually as fans. It's well known now that Reeves is a big fan - he had the Megos as a kid and loved not only the movies but the TV show ("I just wanted to become an ape, because they were so cool"). The article sez Reeves has a bust of Roddy's Caesar in Che Guevara gear (including a beret) on his desk at Fox. The article comments on his passion for the material and sez "he does not at all seem like a hastily hired replacement (for Wyatt)". According to Dylan Clarke, Reeves brought a needed fresh perspective: "getting Matt, the outsider, was a big victory for me, because he saw things in the minutiae of things that we had started to lose in our own myopia".
So when Wyatt left, Reeves already had a relationship with Clarke and was invited to take a meeting. But he didn't like the outline he was handed and was actually going to turn it down. He felt they were rushing things, the apes were advancing too fast. So they let Reeves pitch his own idea. As Clarke recalls: "I think we were skipping over a chapter or two. Matt wanted to tell the next chapter (after "Rise")". Reeves remembers: "When Caesar first spoke it gave me the chills. And I thought, "Now, wouldn't it be great, given where ("Rise") ends, not to jump too far forward, to take that to the next stage?"... We just wanted to take the first nibble of the step in their evolution". So, if things are moving too slowly, blame Reeves. But it could be an interesting way to go and a different way to look at the POTA.
Reeves: "There is an assumption that this is a post-apocalyptic movie. And if you look at it from the humans' point of view, it would be. But the movie is not from the point of view of the humans. It is from Caesar and the apes' point of view. So what it is is an ape civilization movie. While the tone is totally different, (doing this) reminds me of Lord of the Rings' world creation. In that it's a world you haven't seen before, which is all about: what would these intelligent apes do if they returned to the wild and tried to create a place for their family...and then grow?" Reeves sees it more as a Western than a war movie.
Reeves: "It is a crisis movie. The spectre of war is there. And that's not to say there isn't violence, and that there aren't battles within it. But it's a human and ape drama. It's a complex situation". He adds: "(WETA's FX work) is going to be amazing!".

Congrats to "Gravity", which has gone farther than any other sci-fi film at the Oscars, with 10 nominations and 7 wins. It's the first sci-fi movie to win Best Director. It also won Best Cinematography, which went to director of photography Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki. But the film was also shot by Michael "Dawn of the POTA" Seresin, who received "additional photography by" credit. It also won Best Score, Best Editing, Best FX, Best Sound Editing and Mixing.
But Best Picture still eludes sci-fi. Here's to next year when "Dawn of the POTA" will qualify.  : )

"Dawn of the POTA" is slated to come out July 11th, but what about July 4rth? The July 4rth weekend is usually a huge movie weekend (in the U.S.) and this year there's no big summer blockbuster ready to pounce. No, really. Go look. I'll wait.

See? And this year July 4rth is on a Friday. It's perfect, yo! There's "Transformers 4" the weekend before (starring our own Mark Wahlberg), and maybe Fox wants to give 'em a 2 week berth (the last one passed $ 1 billion). But I call bull>CENSORED!< on that. Do we want POTA to do $1 billion or not?
We've all wondered why POTA doesn't get respect from the masses. It's "Star Wars" this and "Batman" that. If "Dawn" passes $1 billion it will be independence day for POTA. From then on, people will have to call it "sir". But are we just going to hope it does that? Are we going to praaaay it passes $1 billion? Or are we going to move it up a week so it can have some of those holiday grosses? You don't get what you want in this world by asking nicely. You TAKE it!
Maybe that's all in Fox's plan. So far in the ads and stuff I haven't seen a release date, just "July". If "Dawn" can swing it, maybe they will announce July 4rth, at least in North America. Then the fireworks between ape and man can really begin.

OK, let's get this out of the way. Mark Wahlberg starred in POTA2001. If you don't know that, you've got some research to do. But while that fact is the linchpin of this post, it's not the reason. What I'm here to talk about is that Wahlberg starred in POTA almost 13 years ago but he still surrounds POTA. First of all, he stars in "Transformers 4" the big movie arriving  just before "Dawn of the POTA". As I've already said, the gulf between "Transformers" and "Dawn" is no less than the 4rth of July weekend, and I still feel Fox should move "Dawn" up a week and take advantage of it (unless a week is vital to "Dawn" as a movie). If Fox wants to give "Transformers" 2 weeks because it made $1 billion last time, it's understandable. But Fox is also high on "Dawn" (since it already gave it's director the reigns of "Apes 3") so let's go for it.
The director of "Rise of the POTA", Rupert Wyatt, has been attached to many projects, but it looks certain that his next flick is a remake of the 1974 James Caan film "The Gambler". And the star of that is, wait for it, Mark Wahlberg. So why does Wahlberg continue to haunt us? OK, it's easy to knock him, but he's earned my respect. As a producer he did "Entourage", which I was a fan of, and a movie version hits next year. He also produced and starred in "The Fighter", which was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. He also received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Martin Scorsese's "The Departed". Yeah, knock the Oscars if you want to, but they are still THE OSCARS. What I'm saying is Mark has done well and he's part of POTA history (good or bad). I consider him no less a part of the POTA legacy than, say, someone from "Battle". The title of this post is the last time I'm going to refer to him by that outdated moniker. He's earned it.

Sequels are a way of life now but I don't think there's been this many big franchises with this fast a turnaround before. They are just re-signing directors and getting those sequel scripts going. For 2016, Matt Reeves is directing "Apes 3"; Bryan Singer is doing the honors on "X-Men: Apocalypse"; Marc Webb will spin "Amazing Spiderman 3"; It's just been announced that the Russo Bros. will be back for "Capt. America 3". There's even rumblings of another "Guardians of the Galaxy" that year. All have entries hitting this summer.
It shows that the studios have a lot of confidence in the movies they'll soon be bringing us (right or wrong). And "Capt. America 2" was just screened for critics to raves, so maybe they're right. It makes sense to stick with a director who has the right touch with a story. But they usually wait until the results are in. Probably these movies won't be greenlit until their box office judgement, but in the case of "Apes" (for example) they might have a draft of "Apes 3" hammered out before "Dawn" arrives. They'd have to shoot next year to make 2016. Is this approach too fast and assembly line? There's a lot of quality directors who think it's doable, so we'll see.
Sometimes directors stick around for 3 movies in a franchise "trilogy" ("Lord of the Rings", "The Hobbit", "The Matrix", etc.). If Matt Reeves decides to do a trilogy he could do his third (Apes 4) in the 50th anniversary year of 2018. By then he could get the ape society approximately to where it was in the 1968 original. That would be a crushing schedule but the nice thing about POTA is there's plenty of room to shake things up. It doesn't have to follow the same characters. It can go into the future and show a different society. Just as the original "Apes" films stayed fresh by taking different paths. There's no reason for a director to get bored (or, by extension, bore an audience). There's still a long way to go. Audiences might reject "Dawn" (I don't think they will, but you never know). But Matt Reeves has some interesting bricks to build toward the 50th anniversary. Let's see where he takes us.

Andy Serkis has been showing his animal side on camera for POTA but it looks like he wants some creature comforts behind it as well. He's been developing the flick "Animal Farm" as his directorial debut (after doing second-unit directing on "The Hobbit"). But his first time might instead be "The Jungle Book" for Warner Bros., based on the classic Rudyard Kipling tale. That's not to be confused with Disney's upcoming live-action "Jungle Book" from "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau. It looks like those two movies might be on a collision course and Disney has something of an advantage. Anyone can make a "Jungle Book" movie but only Disney has the right to use imagery from their famed animated version (which came out less than 4 months before the original POTA).
By now Andy is undoubtedly an expert on creating animal characters with motion capture/CG and that gives him a hairy leg up on movies like "Animal Farm" and "Jungle Book". As long as he still has energy left to continue POTA I'd like to see his directing chops. Maybe he'll direct a POTA movie some day.

In spring, a young man's fancy turns to a new POTA trailer. When are we getting one? Well, Fox released the first official "X-Men" trailer today (not counting the Comic Con one), and since Fox is also releasing "Dawn of the POTA" maybe we have some clues. This trailer release is pretty much exactly 2 months before "X-Men: Days of Future Past" comes out (May 23, the former "Dawn" stomping ground), so maybe we can look for the first "Dawn" trailer mid-Mayish? Do the math, "Dawn" bows on July 11th, though I still think they should release it on July 4rth. I know, shut up. I will again predict Fox will hold it a little longer and release the trailer the week "X-Men" comes out. Fox has a lot riding on "X-Men" and getting our first blow away look at "Dawn" would be an added incentive to see it in the theater.
Add to that the fact that "Dawn" was pushed back to July because of the >CENSORED!<load of FX work and giving the trailer an extra week or so might be a good idea. The longer they wait, the more groovy stuff they can put in it. So it's elementary, my dear Watson. The trailer on May 20thish and the movie on July (*cough!* 4rth *cough!*) 11th.
Empire magazine released this behind the scenes pic. It's cool but there's only so much "humans as apes" we can look at. With only 3 months or so to go, I have an ape-tite for the real thing (or the CG thing, you know what I mean).

        And here's the "X-Men" trailer:

Will it be Revenge of the Apes this summer? CinemaCon, the annual bash the movie studios throw for exhibitors, hits this week in Las Vegas. Fox has the stage Thursday but yesterday wuz Paramount, which has some Mark "POTA2001" Wahlberg-centric pics coming. Included in that is Dawn of the POTA's main competish, "Transformers 4". Now we all know there's some bad blood between Wahlberg and POTA, specifically POTA fans. Some didn't dig the celluloid Mark and Burton laid down a decade ago. For POTA to beat "Transformers" at the box office would be a symbolic bloody nose for the former Leo Davidson. Especially with Mark crowing yesterday that "Transformers" is the greatest franchise ever (which is his job, but still).
So can POTA take him? The last "Transformers" passed $1 billion but, you know, tastes change and "Transformers" is getting long in the tooth. POTA is the underdog but on the rise. Most people would have to give the advantage to "Transformers" but if POTA topped it that would be quite a feat, something to write home to Zira about. We'll see (*cough* July 4rth *cough*).
Paramount also has Rupert "Rise of the POTA" Wyatt's "The Gambler" starring Wahlberg for the fall and they think it could be an Oscar contender.

It was a big day for Andy Serkis yesterday at Caesar's Palace in Vegas (baby!). Besides the reveal of new "Dawn" footage he received the Vanguard Award. Needless to say, folks wanted to talk to him about the footage they saw. Here's a couple of interviews that cover a lot of ground. Personally, I consider this stuff background, not spoilers, but your mileage may vary. He also reveals he's seen a rough cut and calls it "a really powerful film and I think important film about identity, about tribalism". And also: "This film is very much about family, about how and to what lengths one goes to to defend one's family without being destructive to others". He loves that "it's completely different" from "Rise".

Today (3/30) marks 75 years since the first appearance of The Batman. Over the years, Batman and POTA have crossed paths behind the scenes, from the '60's TV show (Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Victor Buono, H. M. Wynant, Woodrow Parfrey, Linda Harrison, William Smith, Buck Kartalian, Army Archerd, Lee Delano, early Nova Angelique Pettyjohn) to Tim Burton to Gary Oldman ("The Dark Knight" trilogy) in "Dawn". Batman was a big part of the '60's culture during the original POTA era (both produced by Fox) and, well, it's still a big part of the culture now that "Apes" is back. They were Megos together back before everybody and his brother had an action figure. And I dig Batman too. So happy anniversary, Mr. Wayne!

.html.html That about sums it up...

I am thinking that it (like RISE) will be good on its own merits, but not as great as some people made RISE out to be...

No matter what comes of these new films, I'll never consider them as "prequels" or anything like that to that original films: To me, any new film and its sequels are their own take on the APES name... As an example, all BATMAN films aren't connected even though there may be similarities in characters, settings, situations- The new APES films should be kept seperate from each other as well...

Toby Kebbell played Koba for Fox in "Dawn of the POTA" and it looks like the studio is going to extend his villainous services. He's reportedly going to be Doctor Doom in their big "Fantastic Four" reboot. On the heels of Fox grabbing the "Dawn" director for "Apes 3" this seems like further evidence they like what they've seen in the new "Apes" sequel. As a long time Oliver Stone fan, I remember Kebbell in "Alexander" as Pausanius, the dude who killed Alexander's dad. Another Stone assassin is in "Dawn", Gary Oldman, who played Lee Harvey Oswald in the famed "JFK". Of course, Stone was one of the first filmmakers to attempt a modern POTA, 20 years ago.

On Amazon they are two different books, with different release dates and page counts.

            "Art of": 6/17/14, 176 pgs.
            "Celebration": 10/14/14, 256 pgs.

Titan is also doing the "Dawn" prequel and novelization.

Wonder Con hits Anaheim, CA. on Easter weekend and Fox has big plans for it. "Dawn" director Matt Reeves, stars Andy Serkis, Keri Russell and Gary Oldman are scheduled to attend. I'm considering going but conventions are such a pain these days (an expensive pain). Sardine life sucks. But like Comic Con, we'll probably get some new info and maybe they'll drop a new trailer. Fox Day is 4/19, the day before Easter.

Is POTA the Celebration the Russo book re-revisted?

"POTA: A Celebration" is slated to be published in October. What is it? Dunno, but it looks like another history of the franchise. It'll be put out by Titan Books, a British company.

No. They are keeping their title. "Celebration" is a new book.

.html.html I might buy "Celebration/POTA" (and probably the updated Russo book too), but I'm hoping "Celebration" actually adds something to the mix other than the story told for the millionth time of how every studio rejected Arthur and APES and FOX gave them a chance with the screen test, etc...

It'd be nice if they have some interviews or a lot of behind the scenes pics, something to make it worth the price...

It could be good. I'm going to hold out to see what you guys think before spending the dough. They might have some fun facts on "Rise" and "Dawn".

NECA has done a photo shoot of both it's DAWN and CLASSIC ape figures and will release the pics next week. They are also planning a photo caption contest. Maybe someone will win a set or a rarity (no prize has been announced).

For those who live around Los Angeles and want to beat June gloom (the gloom that "Dawn of the POTA" is so close and yet so far), Creature Features is planning an Ape auction, art show and signing. I guess more details soon.

Well, if Rise was anything to go by, the apes would be much quicker and more agile without horses. Maybe I'm just being picky?

It's still easier to ride a horse than to do it all yourself. Especially over long distances. They can leave the horse when it's time to rock.
