This sounds like it'd be a pretty cool event to attend... But, not being anywhere remotely close to LA (or anywhere in Cali), I won't be able to attend it...
Hopefully Jeff or somebody else from here will be able to attend and give us the details...

For those who live around Los Angeles and want to beat June gloom (the gloom that "Dawn of the

$ 1 billion seems like a lot, but that's only
because you don't think big. As blockbuster movies go, it's definitely mucho
dinero but doable for certain movies. Has "Dawn of the POTA" got what it takes?
Well, Box Office Mojo has looked over the 2014 contenders and considers
"Dawn" "very unlikely" to cross that marker (it would have to earn over double
what "Rise" did). In fact, the only one that seems a possibility is
"Transformers 4", Dawn's main competish. But expectations are made to be broken,
so when "Dawn" passes $1 billion and sez, "Take that, Mark Wahlberg!", it will
taste even sweeter.

The current issue of "Entertainment Weekly"
includes mention of a certain character's cameo. I don't consider this a Grade A
spoiler but if you're particularly sensitive to knowing anything about the
movie, adios.

James Franco's Will makes a posthumous
(post-human?) appearance (sez E.W.) via early footage. According to Franco, he
wasn't even asked for his permission, so it's not freshly filmed. But I'm still
interested in how they give the character a nod since he was so important to
"Rise". <.html <.html

.html
.html
Last year some folks were invited to the set of
"Dawn of the POTA" to do some interviews for their websites. Fox has now given
the OK to release this stuff and it seems to be kicking off a cool Ape Week in
Ape-ril, culminating in the gang getting together at Wondercon on Saturday.
Here's what Collider has on tap, with my own favorite tidbits.
This a list of 45 bullet points from the
visit.
The producer sez there probably won't be any
overt shout outs to the original films like there wuz in "Rise" ("Take your
stinking paws off me", etc.). The fans didn't like that and they were under
pressure from the studio to include those in "Rise". They also don't feel the
need to include a big twist ending.
The story takes it's cue from the history of the
White Man invading primitive cultures, such as the Aborigines and the Native
Americans (*cough* "Avatar" *cough*).
The film was shot in 3D, which made for
about 30% longer days. The D. P. used Arri Alexa cameras, the closest to a
film look. The hardest part was making New Orleans look like San Francisco (the
light, etc.).
Andy sez the film is about family and
intergenerational conflict (those who lived in the human world and those born
after it). And also the development of language: "it's discovering the power of
language...(the director) didn't want to miss out on that part of the evolution,
because that is in a way the most interesting part". He found the hardest part
was expressing quiet, reflective moments.
As mentioned last week, there's going to be a nod
to Will (James Franco), the Frankenstein who created this situation. Serkis sez
of this scene (which he hadn't filmed yet): "on the page it's very beautiful. It
will be an extraordinary thing to play".
On the director: "I can't express enough how
ambitious this project is, and he's not only coping with that and getting the
movie shot, but he's also creating an extraordinary amount of space for the
actors to explore, and that's a real rarity. Much like Rupert Wyatt in the way
that Rupert was insistent on it being all about the performance and really
finding those moments. You can only ever do that on a project like this if you
have a director who wants that and is gunning for that".
He considers this harder than "Rise": "There's
really subtle scenes and subtle moments, so as an acting challenge this is a lot
greater". The hardest thing about playing an ape is learning to be
still.
Here's an interview with the human lead of
"Rise". Serkis was particularly pleased with their relationship on
camera.

I am glad to hear they're wising up on the references/"shout outs"... I always thought they were pointless and dumb (and their way of trying to be

Actually, I was thinking about that tonight. And
really, they wanted to connect it to POTA (and many of the fans of the original
POTA have rejected it because it's not enough like the originals). But all they
had to go on with "Rise" was the old dialogue (and the fire hoses). "Rise" is
too different from the originals (which is also it's strength, to me). The new
one has apes on horses with guns. That's enough connection to POTA that
they don't need old dialogue.

.html
.html
Here's another interview from that
"Dawn" set visit last summer. It's with Dylan Clark, who wuz a big producer with
Chernin Entertainment on "Rise" and "Dawn" (he's since left the company). He
talks about how the script is the thing, not knowing references to previous
movies or twist endings or setting up sequels ("If you don't properly tell your
movie with a proper ending and it feels like you're setting up another movie,
the audience hates you for that").
But Clark is very high on "Dawn" and Matt Reeve's
take. They were moving too fast in showing the apes develop and Reeves told them
to take it slower: "I think we have a great ending. I think that this is a
great story. It was a long way around the park to get there... but it's a really
good story. It took Matt, as I say, it took an outsider from us to come in and
sort of tell us, remind us, what we did really well on "Rise" (showing the ape
intelligence develop)... We didn't want to go 50%, we wanted to actually go 15
to 20% of their intelligence... I hope we pull this off and if we do... Matt, he
gets all the credit. Matt has been perfect".
Clark also acknowledges the improved CG work of
WETA, including better ape lips and legs. And an improved stunt team to give
them references: "We have a shot in Vancouver of one of our guys jumping 25 feet
down an incline. He's hopping and just goes for it. And that will be in the
movie in a way we never could have achieved in ("Rise")".
It's an interesting interview and Clark was an
ape's best friend on these movies. It's too bad he won't be continuing with
POTA.

Select film journalists were brought to Fox to
watch 6 clips from "Dawn of the POTA" (totaling about 20 minutes). These clips,
plus a trailer shown at Cinema Con and Wonder Con, will probably hit within the
next month or so. The 6 clips are:
1. 1st contact- first meeting between apes and
humans since the virus
2. ape council- the apes "discuss" what to do
about the humans
3. warning- Caesar warns Gary Oldman not to tread
on him
4. Ellie and child - sweet scene between Keri
Russell and Caesar's infant
5. human and Maurice - scene between teen human
and the bookish orang (a la Virgil) Maurice
6. Koba - this scene got a big reaction as Koba
shares a drink with some humans and it gets violent
The clips seem to highlight the two different
ways the societies can go - to clash or to get along and learn from each
other.

As one of the more anticipated movies of the
summer, with an epic scope that will reportedly blow us away, some might be
surprised at the budget for "Dawn of the POTA". The Hollywood Reporter sez it's
$110 million (while Forbes estimates $120 million). "Rise" cost $100 million, so
it's not a big markup. That's definitely on the low end of the spectrum for
blockbuster FX movies this year. The big guns (Transformers 4", "Spidey") are
$200 million + (Fox spent a reported $205 million on the new "X-Men", even
though "Rise" beat every X-Men movie to date). The new Tom Cruise sci-fi "Edge
of Tomorrow"? $175 - 200 million. The new Disney flick "Maleficent"? $175
million. Perhaps Dawn's closest kin this summer is "Godzilla", a "creature
feature" without an expensive cast, and that still cost $160 million. Even
the risky Wachowski movie "Jupiter Ascending" is $150 million.
Of course, the important thing is the movie, not
the budget. And by fall the pieces will land where they may. But going into the
summer it shows where the studios consider their bread buttered and POTA is
still a risky proposition, it seems. And maybe it shows why POTA continues to
travel under the radar despite an almost half a $ billion haul worldwide last
time for a movie set mostly in cages (and without 3D). But the "experts" are
starting to come around. Box Office Mojo today predicted "Dawn" will do $700
million worldwide.
It's still a few months before we know if "Dawn"
slips on the banana peel or makes a monkey out of the superheroes, but meanwhile
the movie's director and composer took these pics of the Ape empire they're
building. Are they playing with fire?

At this point I think I know (and have posted)
everything they're going to tell us about "Dawn of the POTA" before it's
released. But this is a fun interview. What a cast. Not just talented but nice
people. I'm impressed with Gary Oldman, who I guess I assumed was a pretentious
actor's actor but is a regular guy and easy to talk to. And hanging out with
Keri Russell seems to be a blast (could we ask for a more beautiful leading
lady?). If they bring this kind of personality to their roles, we're
golden.
And while we're at it, thanks to Al for this
interview where Gary Oldman admits he's seen POTA2001 about 17 times because of
his kids (fun fact: Oldman was the original choice to play Thade but they
stalled over money).
And just in case you think he's doing this for the
kids, Oldman said in the Wondercon press interview (posted here earlier) that he
grew up with the original POTA and "can't imagine a childhood without POTA".
Good man. <.html <.html

Happy Birthday to director Matt Reeves, who turns
48 today (April 27). Here's his thoughts on "Dawn". As we know, the best POTA
movies have sympathetic villains (Dr. Zauis, Hasslein) that some might even
consider heroes (after all, they are trying to save their societies). That's how
Matt sees "Dawn": no villains allowed. He also talks about whether James Franco
will make an appearance and whether he's planting seeds for later movies.

After much speculation and rumor, the cast of
"Star Wars: Episode 7" was announced today. Included in the cast is our own Andy
Serkis (Gary Oldman was rumored and maybe he will be revealed later). The movie
is being directed by J. J. Abrams (lifelong pal and collaborator of Matt "Dawn
of the POTA" Reeves) and is maybe the most anticipated movie of the moment. It
brings back the original characters from over 30 years ago. The science
fiction genre was in disrepair back in the '70's, with little mainstream or
studio respect. "Star Wars" blew the lid off it, leading the charge for improved
FX that make these stories more believable. It made sci-fi big business, with
budgets to match. Some might groan it created flash over substance but that's a
question of how it's used, not the value of the tools.
Congrats to Andy and let's have some good "Star
Wars" movies again.

materials have said July 11th, I still feel Fox is leaving it's option open to
push it up a week to July 4rth. That's a big holiday weekend in the U.S. and
movies have benefitted from it (ask Will Smith). There's no blockbuster
scheduled to open then. Is Fox just going to let "Transformers" in it's 2nd
weekend have it all to itself? If the movie can't make that date fine, but I
wouldn't be surprised if Fox has a second schedule in their back

Graffiti seems to play a role in the
look for "Dawn of the POTA" and I found an Easter egg in the opening
credits for the 1999 Matt Reeves/Keri Russell TV show "Felicity": Dr. Zauis
graffiti. Keri walks by it at the 2 minute mark (bottom of the screen, Ron
Howard credit). Since Keri might be walking among Dr. Zauis' ancestors on
movie screens this summer under Reeves' direction, it's full circle
time.

Sounds like the NECA "Dawn of the POTA" figures
are starting to turn up at Toyz 'R Us and elsewhere (I guess Classic Apes in
June). Here's a video review that gives you a good look at it and even compares
it to the Japanese "Rise" figure. I think they went overboard on the war paint,
giving it a kind of Tim Burton look but still a decent figure.

My local Toyz 'R Us had the new NECA "Dawn of the
POTA" figures. Exactly 1 Koba, 1 Maurice and 4 Caesars. I grabbed Koba for now.
They look much better in person than in photos. The black around the eyes isn't
as pronounced. The paint is more subtle. A good job.
The guy at the register said, "I didn't even know
we had these. I hope it's as good as the last movie." End of

Dear 20th Century Fox:
It's come to our attention that there is no
big blockbuster opening July the 4rth (a Friday) in America, USA. This will not
stand, because:
a) we all know how well a blockbuster opens
on the 4rth of July holiday. It's been a tradition since your "Independence Day"
in 1996.
b) Everybody assumes "Transformers 4" will
be the big movie of the summer and it opens the week before. Are you afraid?
"Amazing Spiderman 2" has already shown all bets are off as far as assumptions.
Trans4mers is an old, hobbling franchise that people are tired of. The last one
made $ 1 billion? You know as well as anyone how quick the tide turns. The new
POTA has uniqueness on it's side and a growing audience who saw the last
one on DVD; Transformers has a bad rep from too many subpar movies. You need to
be strong.
c) The movie won't be ready? It's already
showing in Jamaica and the Philippines on the 9th, so it's not much of a
stretch.
d) POTA doesn't scream 4rth of July? You've
already got Koba climbing on the American flag in the trailer. You've got
Rocket's red glare. You've got ape independence. You're set. A child could
create your ad campaign.
In short, you can let warmed over "Transformers"
take the 4rth of July holiday or you can turn it into a true event by opening a
brand new POTA movie. You've finally given a modern POTA a good script coupled
with an epic look. Give it this platform and watch it work it's
magic.
Thank you for your attention.

The Los Angeles Times is providing the first

absence of Will). The book hits May 27th in paperback.

As far as official POTA wall calendars go, there
wuz one for POTA2001 and now one for "Dawn". It's done by NECA, the same people
who do the figures. Does that mean they will choose better pictures than
the usual boring tie-in calendar? Dunno, and unfortunately, you can't
count the days until "Dawn of the POTA" comes out because this will come out at
the same time (July 2014). But you CAN count the days until 2015 runs out, which
means it's 2016 and time for another POTA movie. That's just plain

China is the fastest growing audience for
American movies. Japan used to be the # 2 country for box office (after the
U.S.), now it's China. It's important enough that Hollywood studios are
including Chinese stars in their blockbusters and doing co-productions with
China. The country has recently given a big bump to Capt. America 2 and
Amazing Spiderman 2. POTA has a 2 coming out as well though so far I haven't
found a Chinese release date for "Dawn". The Chinese government that decides
what movies are shown can be picky and some people find a story about animals in
charge distasteful. But what's the biggest hit in China so far this year? "The
Monkey King".

Still lurking here and get all the emails. But seeing as I'm trying to avoid most (if not all) about the new movie, I don't have much to say as that is the focus now. I don't want to see pictures, read
interviews, or watch trailers. I want to go in fresh and (hopefully) be surprised as to what I see when the movie gets released. It's much more fun, for me at least.
I thought it was pretty funny (but nice) for Jeff to have sent us that link for the new book and it has a contest that requires you to 'like' their Facebook page, and yet he is not on Facebook... yet.

I check out most of the links you put up on here and I've been putting a lot of them up on the Mego Museum in a thread someone started over there for "DAWN"... So, your posted stuff is going out to more
than just the APES groups...

I check out the Facebook pages. They're pretty cool. And I get a lot of my info from Al's twitter and others. There's so much more now then there used to be. But it pretty much scatters everybody. Life moves

Just wondering if these figures come in "resealable" packaging or once they're opened that's it? (An example of what I mean by "resealable" packaging would be something like the EMCE Apes
had/have if that's any help to anyone...)<.html<.html <.html

I don't know what EMCE is (no Apes I've ever
heard of came in resealable packages). I cut a hole in the NECA package and can
return it to it's plastic tomb.

Do you already have the NECA apes? I thought they were coming out later this summer. Dario

EMCE Toys is a company that reissued four of the original five Mego APES figures as well as reissues and new figures of Mego's STAR TREK line, etc... The reissued APES figures came out in around 2008 if I remember
correctly...
When packaged, the EMCE figures looked like Mego's original style of packaging with the figures in a bubble on a card, but it was really a clear plastic "shell" that contained the figure and the
figure's "card"... The EMCE figures came packaged in such a way that you could trim the top plastic off the resealable shell so you could take the figure out and display it loose or you could return
it to that the clam-shell bubble and snap the clear packaging shut again and it'd look carded and sealed again... (Hope this makes sense to you...)
All that said, it sounds like the new NECA figures are packaged in a way that you have to do your own custom way of figure removal...

The "DAWN" figures are out now, the "Classic Apes" will be out later in the Summer... Just recently, Jeff mentioned the "DAWN" being at Toys R Us and when he mentioned them being out
there, I checked out eBay to see if anyone on there was selling them... Quite a few sellers are offering them on there, and the people are selling them individually or as the set of three...
I haven't checked the local Toys R Us to see if they have them in stock... There's a local comic shop, so they might carry them too...

|
.html .html.html
I know it'd probably be pointless, but since it's the TV series 40th anniversary this year, it might be worth writing to FOX to ask them to reissue the TV series again, this time with EXTRAS...
Why I'm asking about Booth Colman is to see if anyone knows of any interviews he did talking about the APES series... I know he's up there in age and may not be up to doing any new interviews, but is there
anything "archival" out there? I ask this so we'd have something to suggest to them to use as an extra...
Also, there has to be James Naughton footage they could use from the "BEHIND" documentary, and I don't think it'd be out of the question that Ron Harper would do an interview (and/or episode
commentary)... Input from Booth would be good to include since he was a series co-star... And, any interviews/episode commentaries with surviving guest stars and series extras (such as Ron Stein, Eldon Burke, etc...)
would also be good to suggest to the powers that be at FOX...
So, if anyone knows of anything to add to this list, please add to it so people can start getting ideas of what they'd want included should FOX do an anniversary edition of the show...<.html<.html

NECA's Classic Apes will be in a Mego-like
box, so that may be better packaging.

Yes, this box looks like you'd be able to take the figure out of the box pretty easily...

I interviewed Booth and he doesn't have much to
say about the show.
If "Dawn" is mega-successful, Fox will want stuff
to release and the TV show on blu-ray is an obvious choice. Maybe interviews to
make it an event.

I do want to get the classic apes. Not so sure about Dawn figures although I'm leaning towards getting at least one 'new' Caesar at some point. Dario

I'd like to hear from old CBS/Fox alumni if anyone can shed a better explanation regarding the cancellation of the show. Sure rating, cost were a factor, but I think we could get more. Being so long
ago, people would be more open to discuss these things. (There was the murmur about Fred Silverman's wife hating the show... etc.)

Roddy said the problem was the audience was
mainly kids and the network wanted more lucrative adult sponsors (Saturday
morning was for kids, where POTA ended up as a cartoon). It was all those
things: ratings, cost, Fred Silverman didn't like it. They expected more from it
because it seemed like it would be a home run based on the ratings for the
movies.
