.htmlGreetings Apedom,
I've been carefully reading all the discussions on the APE remake
scandal. (It is much more interesting than the Clinton sex scandal.) So
here's my two cents worth.
JP said an APE remake couldn't be bad. I would love to think so, but the
way SciFi Hollywood films have been going, I just don't know. I can
count GREAT Science Fiction films made this decade on one hand. There
have been alot of so so SciFi, and even more utter @*%#$! Never the
less, I'd rather see a bad APEs film than nothin'.
Also, Cameron, along with Lucas and Spielberg, is one of the greatest
American SciFi film makers of the last twenty years. His dark style
would have been perfect for a new APES film. It hurts me to learn he is
a no good quiter.
There is alot of great story potential at many points along the POTA
TIMELINE. If not a new APES film, then how about some original APE
novels. The bookshops are full of original STAR TREK and STAR WARS
novels. Why no APES??? After STAR WARS and STAR TREK, PLANET OF THE APES
is the biggest SciFi movie franchise of all time. POTA shouldn't be such
a distant third. Can anyone out there write? I'd be the first to buy an
original APE novel!
Also, JP, are you refering to the Ursus, Zaius, Cornelius 12" figures,
or, by some miracle, are the Zira, Taylor, and Slave Gorilla 12" figures
out already? (There is a picture of these on Chris' APE page.)
Ape On Dudes,
Reece

Yes, those are the three I was referring to, though the new ones are in
the plans, as I hear. Again, I have digital pic's of these guys also,
if anyone's into collecting ape pictures/scans. :) Actually, though I
don't have the time, I think it would be neat to make a photo-comic by
taking pictures of these characters in different poses playing out a
story... frame after frame... maybe the apes attacking a corn field
full of Barbies??? (they're the same basic size). Well, I know, kooky
idea... but if I were younger and had the time, I'd probably play with
the idea a bit.
You're right, the ape movie "could" be bad... but somehow I think they'd
do a good job if they ever got to it. And, if Cameron did it, you know
it would be good. Here's a thought that might LIVEN UP some discussion
here: Fantasy Cast.
Anyone care to take a stab at re-casting the film (just for fun) with a
fantasy cast? Like, how about if it had been made as a comedy and Dr.
Zauis was played by Rodney Dangerfield... and Nova were Daisy Fuentes?
Hah ha... okay, so it's still early in the morning Sunday, and my mind
is not totally awake yet. :)
Ape-On, You'all

No, but it will affect the way an ebntire generation thinks about
"Planet of the Apes" - even if it sucks (an almost certainty - see
below), it will be thought of by many as the definitive version if it's
successful. That's what I don't want.

Well . . . have you seen Godzilla? Armageddon? Big, empty, expensive
pieces of garbage.
I've read both scripts for the remake - they're utterly AWFUL. They
contain no trace of the satire or drama seen in the first film.

.htmlThere are novelizations of all of the POTA movies on Ebay according to
Steve(Alexander). I agree with Reece, I don't really care if the new film is
bad, its better than nothing, I think its time they made another one, if it is
bad I doubt it will screw up the image of the other POTA movies, people expect
bad sequels and if it is good it would just make the rest of the ape movie
look better.
I doubt Fox is going to make the movie though, most big budget sci-fi movies
made fairly recently didn't do that great, Waterworld, Soldier, and I'm sure
there are some others I can't think of right now.

That's exactly why most movies suck these days. Audiences don't demand
better products.

You realize it's going to be a remake, though, right? It's not a
sequel.
> I doubt Fox is going to make the movie though, most big budget sci-fi movies

Yeah, but Fox is making another new sci-fi film that ties in with
another sci-fi film series from teh 70's, and they think will do okay,
so they're more than likely willing to give a POTA remake a shot.

Funny you should mention that Reece --- because i have written two chapters
of an ape novel, set AFTER the first movie end and before the 2nd one
begins. I will be trying to explain the space ship that took Zira +
Cornelius back to earth (and how Taylor was involved in that!) . . . as
well as going into the Heresy trial that Dr. Zaius threatened the two of
them with. I fully agree with you that there should be Ape books . . . I
am trying to figure out how to find an agent to find a publisher (thanks
Jeff, for your suggestions...)

UGH! what an awful list. those are almost all slick Hollywood types. How
could they pull off the cynicsm needed for the role? Cage would be doing
his usual "Elvis" except he could branch out into "Elvis meets the Apes".
Ugh, I wish I could provide you with a better choice, but unfortunately

I think Irons would be interesting. Because he has the sort of sympathetic

.htmlI have a contact who is a writer at Fox and I asked him about the Cameron situation on the POTA movie. He said the rumor that he heard was that Cameron was determined to take POTA into a totally new direction and that he was not interested in a remake, which is what Fox wanted. The company wanted him to remain true to the original movie and they did not like the direction Cameron was going with his storyline. Cameron supposedly told Fox that his efforts should be spent in promoting new ideas, not repolishing old ones.
That's the rumor...if it's true or not...who knows. The fact is, no new movie anytime soon (sigh). Here's one thought...if he's so into new ideas, why is working on a script for True Lies 2?
Also, the 2 POTA paperbacks I got on Ebay were about $3.50 each, not bad...shipping's about $3.00.

By Richard Katz
NEW YORK (Variety) - As if to prove that anyone can get a job in showbiz,
TBS Superstation has started production on
``Channel of the Apes,'' a comedy series featuring a group of chimpanzees
who run their own television network.
``Channel of the Apes'' (working title), an expansion of TBS' ``Monkey-ed
Movies'' shorts, will premiere on the cable
network in June 1999.
The ``Monkey-ed Movies'' shorts featured costumed chimpanzees and
orangutans acting out scenes from Hollywood's
most popular movies including ``Titanic,'' ``Good Will Hunting'' and ``As
Good As It Gets.''

Merchandise seems so far away from the actual stories etc. There is big money being made in the apes products with no sight anywhere of charlton heston, the cast or crew of the movies ever being mentioned or remembered. Just curious to hear some feedback from others on this topic which is never addressed. Check out the POTA International Fan club website at www.dlcwest.com/~comicsape/ape.htm

I read several posts describing Cameron's outline, and it sounded like a
remake to me. Fox wants another franchise, and to do that, they'd have
to start from scratch, because asking a modern audience to be familiar
with the existing Apes timeline and going to see a sixth would be too
great a gamble for a large-budget production. Financially, it doesn't
make sense.
Even if Cameron DID want to build on the existing stories, perhaps this
is why he left the preoject. Fox wants a REMAKE.

I'm an Aussie APE collector with a pretty comprehensive collection but am looking to hook up with other collectors in the hope that I might be able find more stuff ( sounds good in theory).
I also work for 2oth Century Fox Home Entertainment here in Australia and come across snippets of info on upcoming APE activity. i.e: Inkworks ( I think) will be releasing all new collector cards next spring. Also Hasbro may be releasing a series of 5 seven inch figures ( if interest is strong from retailers at Toy fair). So there you go, incase you didn't already know.
Hope to hear from someone.

| Subject: "Escape" Director Dies |
.htmlHOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Actor-director-writer Don Taylor, who played
Elizabeth Taylor's bridegroom in
``Father of the Bride'' and went on to helm such features as ``Escape From
the Planet of the Apes'' and ``The
Island of Dr. Moreau,'' died Tuesday at the UCLA Medical Center in L.A. of
heart failure. He was 78.
Taylor starred opposite Barry Fitzgerald as the younger detective in the
1948 film-noir classic ``The Naked City.''
In 1950, he appeared in the comedy classic ``Father of the Bride,'' which
starred Miss Taylor (not related) and
Spencer Tracy.
Born in Pittsburgh, Taylor began acting in college stage productions at
Penn State University, where he studied
speech and drama.
On the recommendation of Penn State alumni Julius and Phil Epstein -- the
screenwriters of ``Casablanca'' who
had seen him in a college production -- Taylor made his way to Hollywood
(by hitchhiking) in 1942 after graduation.
MGM signed the clean-cut, all-American Taylor to a seven-year contract.
After several minor roles, Taylor enlisted in the Air Force, where he was
recruited by Irving ``Swifty'' Lazar for a lead
role in the Moss Hart-directed Army-Air Force production of Hart's play
``Winged Victory.''
Following his discharge from the service, Taylor resumed his motion picture
work full time, landing a top role in the
trend-setting crime drama ``The Naked City.''
Taylor's other film acting credits include ``Stalag 17'' (1953), ``Father's
Little Dividend'' (1951), ``Battleground'' (1949),
``Flying Leathernecks'' (1951), ``The Bold and the Brave'' (1956) and
``I'll Cry Tomorrow'' (1955).
After moving behind the camera, Taylor directed 15 motion pictures,
including ``Ride the Wild Surf'' (1964), ``Escape
from the Planet of the Apes'' (1971), ``Tom Sawyer'' (1973), ``Echoes of a
Summer'' (1976), ``The Island of Dr. Moreau'' (1977),
``Damien: Omen II'' (1978) and ``The Final Countdown'' (1980).
Taylor's television directing credits include episodes of ``The Wild, Wild
West,'' ``Night Gallery,'' ``Cannon'' and
``Alfred Hitchcock Presents.''
As a writer, Taylor was nominated for an Emmy for the NBC television show
``The Night They Tore Down Riley's Bar.''
Last year, Taylor wrote and directed the play ``Silver Buckles On His
Knee,'' which starred Mariette Hartley when it was
produced by the University of Las Vegas Theater Group.
Taylor is survived by his wife, actress Hazel Court Taylor; two daughters,
Avery Taylor Moore and Anne Taylor Fleming;
a son, Jonathan David Taylor; stepdaughter Sally Walsh; sister Janet
Tuttle; and a granddaughter.

.htmlThis list was recommended to me by Steve Temple, who occasionally posts here. I will be very interested in hearing more about one of my favorite sci-fi movies (I really only regard the first one as a true classic).
My name is Eric Paddon, I'm a grad student at Ohio University and I am also the author of an original POTA story that represents my own take on a different reality following the events of the first movie. It is a crossover story with the universe of another favorite sci-fi saga of mine Battlestar Galactica, and has been posted in installments on the archive of the Battlestar Galactica Fanfic List, which can be found at www.oct.net/~red/piper/index.html I have made a strenuous effort to maintain continuity and consistency with the first movie and also provide some further background insights on the characters.
I still hope that if a new POTA movie is ever made that it will follow up on the original series (which I don't think were given a proper sense of closure) instead of remaking it in an offbeat fashion.

Latest remake news - one source says that Cameron left the project after

involved, and that Fox is looking for new writers. Any of you guys have an

.htmlJust an FYI - Planet of the Apes as American Myth has just been released in
softcover - it looks to be an interesting read, and contains stills from
all five films depicting scenes that were cut from the films (Taylor's
swimming during his escape/chase scene, a pre-credit shot from Escape,
showing the inside of the ship as it approaches Earth, etc.). Check it
out!

It's the new ones including Zira, Gorilla Slave and Taylor in his flight suit.
Has anyone else heard anything on the smaller action figures that Hasbro was going to release?
Thought I'd throw out a topic for discussion since it's been so quiet lately.
We know that the astronauts used Hasslein's Theory to supposedly travel to a distant star system. Does anyone have any theories regarding the actual physics driving the ship to its destination? Did they use an Ion drive or some other means of propulsion?
Thanks

The 6" figures are: Taylor, Cornelius, Zaius, Gorilla Soldier, and what
appears to be the sergeant from the TV series (gorilla soldier with
silver stripes on his vest). This same TV soldier has replaced the
Conquest Slave Ape in the 12" line.

We met at Ape City's assembly meeting; you glared at me, muttered "evil human," and then you started to recite: "Beware the beast man, for he is the devil's pawn. General Urko was the gorilla militant from the television series of 1974.
General Ursus was the fanatical gorilla from "Beneath the Planet of the Apes".
I believe they changed the name to Urko when the series came out because it was easier to pronounce when the actors had the prosthetic makeup on.
Glad to meet you and welcome!

Apes' Set For 2001
Although Fox's presentation at ShoWest was dominated by Star Wars:
Episode One -- The Phantom Menace, studio honcho Bill Mechanic
found time to talk about some of Fox's other hot properties. Much to the
Insider's pleasure, Cinescape reporter Frank Kurtz told me that the exec
announced that the Planet of the Apes remake will finally make it into
theaters for Summer 2001. The audience's response to the announcement
was very positive.

I was reading today's (March 19th) L.A. Times article about a Frenchman who skated around the world. Twice the article referred to China's "Forbidden Zones." So, what does this make Chairman Mao...the original Lawgiver?

I've seen it - the guy is dreaming, but the viewer doesn't immediately
know that. Something about "With Serta you can (something fantastic),
or play chess with Cornelius, from Planet of the Apes. And it shows a
guy in a suit sitting on the beach playing chess with Cornelius - and
it's the most accurate recreation of POTA I've ever seen in a spoof yet.

worse as the series went on (i still like them of course )and the t.v series
was good,it was repeated about four years ago in the u.k which gave me a
chance to tape it.
But as much as i like pota the thought of a new film fills me with
dread. After all the piss poor remkes off the past few years would it not be
better to let this great series alone ??
II guess they'll say they can do the makeup better now, but i always liked
the old makeup, i thought most of the apes looked great.A few secondary apes
looked a bit dodgy paticularly some members of the council meeting in
Beneath..
What i really mean is would it be nicer to have fond memories orf this great
institution then grimace at the mention or thought of a fucked up remake ??
Sorry to ramble on so long

Steve, as I often do here on the list . . . I have to defend the later
movies. I think that "Conquest" was the second best film in the series,
from a 'concept' perspective. And 'battle for' was third best. Sure, they
had lousy budgets . . . but they WERE trying to tell interesting stories
that were also relevant to the race relationships of America at the time.
I think the 2nd film was a hodge podge (they had to basically start the
story over and reintroduce the concept for the first half of the movie . .
. before they could move on), and Heston was an overacting buffon!

They did manage to bring the series full-circle and I think they did a fair job considering the ever-decreasing budget they were given. I also understand why a lot of people are worried about a remake, but I'm trying to remain optimistic and hope that Fox doesn't screw this one up. I've read the scripts that were originally considered and the fact that they were rejected make me feel a little better. They should send our group the scripts and let us give some feedback. I think there are a lot of talented minds in this group that could fix their script problems.

Charlton Heston said there was a discussion with Richard Zanuck and Franklin Schaffner during the production about this and Heston insisted that they ignore the point on the grounds that "English is the lingua franca" of film and it would simply be easier to assume that the audience would be suspending it's disbelief on this point. I think it was the correct choice because making a deal of it would have tipped the audience too much in advance and ruined the point of the film. Sometimes, the best cinematic tricks come as a result of plot points that don't work when you analyze them too much (Hitchcock's crop dusting scene in North By Northwest, or the horse head in the bed in the Godfather to name two examples).

apes used telepathic communication and thats how he understood them. The apes
probably didn't realize they were using a human language they'll probably
thought the lawgiver invented it and accepted that. On the thing with the
hiergolyphics maybe the apes have a seprate language for their religion, like
how Preists used Latin in church but spoken vernacular outside of church.

particular virus, once activated, attaches itself to ALL your outgoing
email. Luis most likely had no idea that he was sending the virus on.
However, I think I recall someone on the list notifying him a few months
ago. Luis lives in Brazil, I believe, and may not have understood what
someone was telling him about this virus.

.htmlWhat you say could be true, however, since the message contained
absolutely NO TEXT, only the attachment itself, it is reason for extreme
caution. I have set up my mail program to automatically filter out anything
coming in from Luis and have notified his ISP that he is sending out the
Virus. Now they can sort it out, hopefully. There really is no excuse for
sending out a virus, especially when it is the ONLY thing contained in
the email... no other message. An ape gone astray? Maybe just a human!
:-)
Cheers,

It is true. This is how the virus works. It's the only thing it does -
send itself out on every email you send. It doesn't wipe your hard
drive, or do any permanent damage - it's annoying, but it's not the
apocalypse. Read here- http://vil.mcafee.com/vil/vpe10144.asp - to
learn more about it.
Luis was infected by this virus - it's no reason to blindly demonize
him. I haven't seen this offending email yet, by the way, and I'm
subscribed to the list as well. I also would never open an attachment
of any kind without knowing what it is. But that's me. I'm a different
breed of cat.

.htmlHello everyone...Been terribly quiet out here on this site!
Just an FYI for collectors: I went to Toys R Us the other day and they had the 12" figures for $4.99 each. That's a great bargain for Cornelius, Dr. Zaius and Gen. Ursus. I'm sure Philip could make some great conversions with extra parts like those! I'm not sure if all of the stores have them on discount, but check around and see.
Also, has anyone seen the new figures in the stores or have any site information (pics, etc.)?
We should think about using the chat feature on egroups sometime. It would be nice to talk to some of you in real time. Has anyone out there tried it?
Has anyone heard any recent updates on the new movie?

I am already set up at #21857520
There are 40 million people already using it so its the best way to chat
with others
I'd love to talk POTA with orders and you can start chat groups with more
than 2 people chatting live together at once.
You have to download the program at www.mirabilis.com and go from there.
Hopefully this will work out.
Hope to chat with you soon.

I recommend that you grab these - the clothes can be dyed and altered
(plus at $5 you can buy extra Zaius figs and dye his boots green for
Cornelius), and I have had great success swapping the heads and clothes
onto a more versatile 12" body. Soon as I get a scanner I'll share pics.
