Hey everyone,

Has anyone ever heard of Under The Planet of The Apes, or something to
that effect? One of my friends told me that they read in the Chicago
Tribune that they're doing some kind of performance of it at Northwestern
University. She said it's a popular take-off of the movie. I would think
if it actually existed, I would've heard about it by now, being the POTA
fanatic I am. If anyone knows anything about either the movie/play, or the
performance at Northwestern, I'd like to more. Thanks!

Anyone else having a problem locating this figure that was released
last fall? I have yet to see it - I had a hard time locating the other
two recently released 12" POTA figures (Zira and Gorilla Soldier in
black, white-striped uniform) but the Taylor remains very elusive....

Also, have they discontinued these figures? I can get one at a local
comic store for $40, but don't want to do that unless I have to...

Got mine at a Target store for 19.99. I bought all three. Suggest you try
Target, I also got the 7" figures there, too. Good luck!

.html Do you have a Target store there?  Here (Texas) at Target
they are all down to $9.99 each.  Other than that, just go up
onto Ebay.  I KNOW you can get the figure for much less
than forty bucks!  :-)

Good luck.

I just found the three 12" Hasbro POTA figures at a sports/non-sports collectors/memorabilia show at a local mall from a vendor. He was charging $25 ea. or all three for $60. I bought all three for $60!

Thanks, guys. I did get the first two POTA figs. in the series at
Target (as far as I know the only place that has these figures), but
haven't seen Taylor at all there yet. The Gorilla and Zira that I got
were the last ones there, so I know they're hard to find.

I may have to get this figure on the secondary market, but I sure
won't pay $40 for it...

Hi Terry, Jeff Krueger here.I have a couple of items for your "New Products" file. I was in a collectibles store today and they had two of those Japanese "Ape" figures that have been mentioned, specifically "Cornelius" and a "Soldier Ape". With a discount, I got the Soldier for $25. Since I'm not too savvy when it comes to imported toys, so I decided to wait on the other one until I can scope out a better price. I think they are the only ones available right now, since they are the only ones pictured on the card back. But the card promises 19 of them, but not as great a selection as one might think (no mutants!). The lineup is slated to include: Taylor, Cornelius, and Zira (those three available as astronauts or in their more familiar guise), Milo (as astronaut), Lucius, Gen. Ursus, Gen. Aldo, Gen. Urko, Dr. Zauis, Nova, Caesar and, whatever the hell they are, "Caesar Land's Ape" and "Greatest Ape". Of course, that only makes 16. The last 3 apparently are variant Soldier Apes. There's the one I have with a brown gun, there's one pictured with a lighter gun and the card has another "Soldier Ape" designation. They aren't appreciatively superior to Hasbro's 7" line, just better proportioned and smaller (which I like). They are officially licensed, with the Fox logo. Look for them from Japanese toy importers. Meanwhile, what's Hasbro up to? All should be revealed next week at Toy Fair 2000 (Feb. 13 - 17), where toy toy companies annually unveil their lines for the year. If there's going to be more "Ape" toys, we'll post 'em here. Also upcoming is the annual ShoWest convention for movie theatre owners (March 6 - 9 in Las Vegas). If there's any news on the new "Ape" movie, Fox will reveal it there!                TERRY: I worked with Bill Blake on his announcement to commence with his line of collectibles, which I'll put on your website.

Terry - thanks for posting - some comments:

<<The last 3 apparently are variant Soldier Apes. There's the one I have
with a brown gun, there's one pictured with a lighter gun and the card has
another "Soldier Ape" designation.>>

The lighter gun he refers to is the machine gun seen in "Beneath".

<< They aren't appreciatively superior to Hasbro's 7" line, just better
proportioned and smaller (which I like).>>

Here's where I disagree vehemently. I have Cornelius and one Soldier Ape,
and these figures are by far the best three dimensional representations I've
ever seen of the characters. The sculpt quality blows Hasbro away (I did a
side by side comparison, and there's just no contest - I'll try to post pics
when I can). There's limited poseability (no worse than Hasbro), but the
detail on the faces and costumes is unsurpassed.

Some pics from Ebay:

pretty great. I'm surprised that Fox interactive is releasing this before
releasing the movies on DVD. You can also see some of the characters on the

Two copies currently on Ebay, if anyone's interested:

Thoughts? I may have to make copies of my tape available, if those
prices are any indication . . .

Good God, that's unbelieveable. I'm desperate to get a copy of the extended
version of Battle, but not that desperate! (Not to mention the costs of
converting the tape to PAL format, assuming I could find someone who would,
or the fact that the auction is illegal!)

I guess I'll have to get it some other way.

If you can make a copy of your version in good condition I'll pay you up
$30.00 chief. I have a super VHS so I'm not sure what verison of tape that
is.
I would love to make some lost clips for the internet for all to enjoy.

Let me know.

Oh come now, Burton's about the best choice I've heard so far (I was pulling
for Gilliam, but hey . . .).

Can you guys tell me what the following films have in common?

Yes, Giorgio
Good Guys Wear Black
Omen 2
Death Wish 4: The Crackdown

They were all films made by directors of the original POTA series. Guys who
specialized in generic war films, Charles Bronson movies, an ASTOUNDING
amount of made for TV crap, and nothing on their resumes that would indicate
they were "right" for a POTA movie...

Franklin J. Schaffner who directed the academy award winning movie: PATON
    Great movie, great director.

But I do like Tim Burton, I just hope he dosen't make the movie so trademark
dark as he loves to do.

I think Planet of the Apes IS a dark story. If a remake is going to be
attempted, it should have the berserk quality of a nightmare. Any film about
talking monkeys done in this age is going to be either funny or sick and
twisted. That doesn't mean it should be dark visually, though, which is a
signature look of Burton's (though not on everything he's done).

Then, I considered some of what a few of you have been
saying and now am more intrigued.  Indeed it would add
a different flavor to Apes, and if someone else was to just
make it without being a bit bizzare, it would be just another
'remake,' and I don't want to see the same film all over
again.  I welcome a "different" look to the film.

I find the idea of a Burton PotA film intriguing. I'd still rather they

    Subject: BILL BLAKE
    .html
    .html
    NEWS RELEASE

BILL  BLAKE, known to fans, collectors, convention-goers, and APES aficionados almost everywhere for close to three decades, announces the issue of the first pieces in his collector's series of REPRODUCTIONS of ORIGINAL APPLIANCES from the films and television series. Originally mentioned in February 1999 as an advance announcement to gauge fan/public interest, he is now ready to move forward with the project.

Bill's first offering is his duplicate from the appliance given him by Roddy McDowall - during the filming of CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - but it actually has multi-threat collector's value: The original mold that the appliance came from can be traced back to his "Cornelius" character in ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES (see cover, "Famous Monsters of Filmland, #85, July 1971). An adapted version of the piece was also used in rotation with one of Bill's own molds for his 1970's licensed tour presentations (pictured on brochure in "Planet of the Apes Collectibles" by Christopher Sausville, Pg. 100).

Although, ultimately, 1000 pieces will be available in this "Cornelius/Caesar/Bill Blake Tour" series, it will be broken up into four equal parts, with the first grouping of 250 pieces being offered now on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED basis. Bill has decided to divide the series to make production and delivery schedules more manageable; so each fan within this portion of the series will be able to have his collector's piece in the shortest possible time, while still maintaining the utmost attention to quality and professionalism. Bill is taking reservations now, so you'll have to contact him A.S.A.P. if you want to assure your "place in line" for the lowest production numbers.

Since the initial announcement, Bill has added a collector's bonus to his design: on a deluxe, double-wide plaque configuration, TWO vacuum-formed life masks are mounted side-by-side. One shows the actor's face, exposed; it's companion holds the appliance, as it would be applied to the actor. The combination provides a kind of "before and after", forever frozen in time. The price is $375.00 - very reasonable for the history contained in this wonderful piece - and is complete with applicable certificates and/or letter of authenticity. Plaques are real, trophy-quality wood backings, appliances are airbrushed to proper character colors with archival-quality clear coating for best possible long-lasting durability. Each piece has a legend plate on it describing it's history, teeth are mounted in the mouth and glazed for that "wet look", and, of course, being a chimp character, ears - once again from original molds - are included in the mountings.

Bill wishes to stress that these pieces ARE NOT "resculpts". All collector's series pieces are derived directly from the actual appliances, most of which were actually sculpted by John Chambers himself. They are more akin to the likes of a series of fine artist's prints in the art world. It must also be added, though, that because of the age of the appliances, and the way they were used originally in production, etc., certain small areas may have been touched up in order to "bridge gaps" or correct slight damage. All of such correctional/restoration work is carried out and/or directly supervised by Mr. Blake, who was, of course, trained in all these techniques by Mr. Chambers personally and is fully guaranteed to provide a collector's piece of museum quality or better.

Recently, some small pieces of the original APE CITY set from PLANET, BENEATH, the series, etc. have been unearthed. So Bill will supply some of these as an extra bonus to the earliest orders (offer available while supplies last! Once they're gone, they're gone!). Pieces are authenticated (size & shape of each varies), and some still have "flecks" or whole sections of the sandstone-colored scenic paint on them. These pieces are from the base of the arena, in the central square of APE CITY.

You can contact Bill through Jeff Krueger at the PLANET OF THE APES INTERNATIONAL  FAN CLUB, or if you have questions or comments that need a direct response, you may leave them, along with return phone numbers, etc., on Mr. Blake's personal VOICE MAIL/PAGER NUMBER AT: (818) 698-2553.

"Bill's makeup is the most authentic recreation I've seen.
Bill's shows are like seeing Roddy in the makeup again".

                                                                                   - - -  Natalie Trundy,
"Apes" film star and Mrs. Arthur P. Jacobs

Fans who remember Bill Blake  through his live show and promotional appearances in the '70's with partner Paula Crist, recreating the characters of Cornelius and Zira; from his in-depth , epic, two - part Marvel PLANET OF THE APES Magazine interview (#12, 13), the picture feature (#27); and his ground-breaking "Country Ape" appearance on the POTA TV show - the only time in the history of the APES movies and show where an actor was allowed to create his own appliance for the role - will be pleased to know that Bill is still out there, as actor AND technician, recreating Mr. Jacobs' & Mr. Chambers' AMAZING APES. A  VERY young 47, he has most recently completed an interesting , insightful interview for Luiz Adami (author of the Brazilian book "The Only Good Human Is A Dead Human"), has done numerous APES-related interviews, provided film footage for AMC's "Behind the PLanet of the Apes" and still performs as "Cornelius and Caesar , doing live visual/vocal recreations for Matt Stein's L. A.-based PLANET OF THE APES- themed band, "APE HAS KILLED APE". Bill will share the spotlight with his mentor, John Chambers , in an upcoming issue of "Ape Chronicles".

I read today in the entertainment section of the LA Times that Tim
    Burton has opted 20th
Century Fox for the rights to film the much purported "Planet of the
Apes" remake. No actors chosen yet, but he wants to do a young cast this

time around. Release date: July 4th , 2001.
    Has anyone heard anything else??

    Hey all of you,

You people are total morns! Tim Burton is probably the best choice to
direct an Apes movie that has come along in years. Instead of saying "Wow,
this could make for an interesting movie, rather than a re-hash piece of
crap" (like most new remakes turn into), you just joke about it.

Have any of you actually seen any of Burton's films? Or do you just skim
your knowledge from other people's web postings? Like the person on this
list who didn't even know who Burton was!!! Man, that would be like saying
(in 1976) "Kubrick, um who is this Kubrick fellow??"

I think Depp would make a fantastic Cornelius. He is such a visual actor,
it would play perfectly into the character and the way in which an actor
needs to bring the mask to life.

Quit playing with your ape toys, and think about films again....Jeez!

    Sam,

Get a grip. When I said "Yes, I believe they'll be using Johnny Depp as
Cornelius and Paul Reubens as the intimidating Dr. Zaius :) . . . yes it was a
joke, but it doesn't mean that I hated the idea of Tim Burton or that I even
disliked his films. (I thought Sleepy Hollow was the most effective horror
film to come along in a loooong time).

Just because we joke does not mean we are ridiculing. I joke with my wife all
    the time--it doesn't mean I don't love her; I joke at work--it doesn't mean I
don't take my job seriously. Don't read so much into it.

    >
    > Have any of you actually seen any of Burton's films?

Yep, see above. How would we know what actors Burton has used otherwise?

    > Like the person on this

Well, even if there was a person who didn't know who Tim Burton was, big deal.
I believe this IS the POTA mailing, and so far as I know no one is given a
quiz before they're allowed on board.

Just lighten up. If you can't joke and have fun, then you're living in a
reality far stranger than Tim Burton ever dreamed up himself. --Just a
    thought.

I had a quick favor to ask of anyone who is willing to help out. Rumor
has it there is a Planet of The Apes desktop theme out and about on the

    From Cinescape Online:

Perhaps you thought Todd McFarlanes Gorilla World TV series concept sounded
a tad bit too much like Planet of the Apes? So did Fox. Now, the plug has
been pulled on the potential series.

Back in January, UPN announced that Spawn creator Todd McFarlane was
developing a TV series which had a temporary title of Gorilla World. The
series would focus on a post-apocalyptic Earth where gorillas ruled while
mankind suffered. Regarding its seeming similarities with 20 Century Foxs
Planet of the Apes franchise, McFarlane was quoted as saying, "When was Fox
granted the rights to be the only people who talked about Darwin?"

According to Variety, McFarlanes comments quickly prompted the studio to
take action. The trade reports that Fox quickly sent a cease-and-desist
letter to UPN regarding the potential series. Soon afterwards, to prove they
were in earnest about their announcement made at ShoWest 1999, Fox
officially announced that Tim Burton was on the verge of signing on to
    revive the franchise.

UPN is saying that they didnt pull the plug on Gorilla World because of the
Fox letter, but for other unspecified reasons. UPN is hoping to get
McFarlane to develop another project as a possible mid-season replacement
    for the network.

McFarlane, on the other hand, continues to be outspoken about the matter
taking issue with Fox citing the network's Greed game show as just another
reworked version of ABCs Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. McFarlane told the
trade, "Its always amazing when the thieves call the other thieves thieves.
There are no big original ideas."

Well, I agree with Fox, they would be ripping off Planet of the Apes.
But on the other hand it would have been nice to see a new version of POTA
    on televison.
Hopefully if the new remake make it Big at the box office, Fox would create
a t.v. show or some new animation for saturday mornings.
    That would be cool!

Tons of new web sites on the internet.

Does anyone have the Japanese POTA laserdisc box set? I need a copy of
the unedited version of BATTLE, and this laserdisc is the only one I know
of that features the full version of the movie. Replies to

I saw this on Entertainment Weekly's website and thought of you.
Personally, I think Hollywood shd make fewer movies and try to come up with
new ideas instead of rehashing movies which are fine in the original format
    (esp. Psycho).

    Great Apes
The latest about the ''Planet of the Apes'' remake. David Hochman says Tim
Burton and Jack Nicholson would make a great team

I can see it now. ''Get your stinking Scissorhands off me, you damned dirty
ape!'' Last month, when word came from Twentieth Century Fox that Tim
Burton will direct a new millennium version of ''Planet of the Apes,'' I
started digging out my old Dr. Zaius mask and my hirsute Roddy McDowell
    action figurines.

After all, an ''Apes'' remake had been rumored for years and I was going
bananas just waiting -- especially after all the false starts. At one
point, Arnold Schwarzenegger had reportedly signed on to star for $20
million, and Chris Columbus and Oliver Stone were both mentioned to direct.
Stone probably envisioned the film as a true story in which apes really ARE
conspiring to rule the world. It's no wonder I was so relieved when Burton
finally came on board. Now it looks like Apeheads will be in monkey heaven
    by Summer 2001.

All of which has made me realize how truly bizarre a blockbuster ''Planet''
remake actually is. For one thing, much of the appeal of the first five
''Ape'' films -- from the truly original ''Planet of the Apes'' in 1968 to
1973's truly abysmal ''Battle for the Planet'' (the one where McDowell
returns from the past to stave off the apocalypse) -- was the franchise's
wonderfully low-art sensibility: The latex lips that could only move up and
down; Dr. Zaius's blond Greg Allman hair and beard; Charlton Heston's
overzealous overacting. Not to mention all that unintentionally hilarious
dialogue. Remember ''You cut up his brain, you bloody baboon!'' and the
    infamous: ''Human see, human do.''

Still, the original ''Planet'' films -- and the subsequent ABC TV series
and NBC's Saturday morning cartoon -- made me one happy monkey. The
franchise's air of possibility; the ''what if apes really do take over''
quotient was, at times, overpowering. At a certain point in my childhood, I
thought nothing would be cooler than if Cornelius and Zira showed up at my
house, looked at me with their expressive monkey eyes, and told me they
were taking me to the Forbidden Zone. That was, as long as I wouldn't have
to lay eyes on my absolute worst childhood nightmare -- the dark and hairy
    General Ursus.

My hope is that a remake won't make those monkey memories extinct. Then
again, if anyone can do the franchise justice, it's Burton. His famous long
shadows, jagged angles, and distorted perspective should lend a new level
of depth and darkness to ''Planet.'' And it would be great to see Burton's
regular roster of actors -- Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Danny DeVito and
especially Jack Nicholson -- suiting up in ape costumes.

The script in hand, by ''Apollo 13'' writer William Broyles Jr., is said to
be excellent, though Burton, whose narrative elements tend to take a
backseat to his remarkable visual style, is said to be rewriting it to fit
his simian imaginings. Not that that's a bad thing, if dialogue in the
remake's anything like the original. After all, how many lines like
''That's one small step for Ape, one giant leap for Apekind'' can one human
    take? <.html

    interest (shame on me)
After watching the films, I had a quick hunt round the internet, and
    here I am.

    Two things:
POTA fans in the UK? Terry Tells me they are very strong supporters,

    The remake rumbles on:

There is no way in which the original should be copied - better I think perhaps to go back to the original novel and give it a fuller treatment.

But what it needs is 'Epic' scope - I don't think it can be done in less than two hours. The message at the end must surely be different, as the modern world is a different place. I have my own ideas, but unless people on this group want a load of philosophy (and a really bad attempt at a scroll) I'll be quiet.

I suspect everyone has had enough of remake thoughts, esp director, cast etc. etc. What we need is not pop art (a la Mars Attacks) though, more Kubrick or 2001,

Don't know which one he's talking about... however...
Suncoast Video was selling two different POTA's
t-shirts several months ago -- I got the black one. It
has great artwork on it, and the "Planet of the Apes"
logo on the front breast is embroidered in silver. THE
BEST t-shirt of POTA's I've ever seen (or owned!).
They sold out fast though. I went back thinking I'd get

all gone. Oh well. Happy aping!

A couple of T-shirts just out:

A white one, which features 4 squares in a horizontal strip - one of Taylor,
one of Caesar (from Conquest), one of Zaius, and one of Ursus. It also has
the PotA logo on it too. Great shirt.

A black one with a huge picture of Urko (with a kind of red glow around him)
in an Uncle Sam style pose (pointing) accompanied by huge lettering "I WANT
YOU". If it was just that it would be great, but sadly there is more
lettering underneath that, which reads "to hunt down all humans and do with
them as you wish for the only good human is a dead human!" which kind of
spoils it. It also has the PotA logo on it.

I'd scan them, but the designs are too big for my scanner!

    Zanuck Back With 'Apes'

Richard Zanuck is returning as producer of the remake of one of the films
he pushed through while president of Fox in the '60s: Planet of the Apes.
Zanuck's signing for the important producing position serves to show how
serious Fox is about getting the Apes production up and moving quickly. In
addition, Zanuck's participation might calm any doubts fans of the old series
have about a contemporary take on the classic film series.

While talking to Variety, current 20th Century Fox Film Group prez, Tom Rothman,

says, "This is a big film with a very very significant director. (Zanuck) is a
    pro's pro
and there's the karmic unity of the fact he was here when the series started.
    There's
    a certain poetry to that."

Zanuck tells the Hollywood Reporter, "For me to come back into this, I feel like
    I'm
in a time warp. I initially put this into production when I was at Fox 30-some
    years
ago. The idea was so intriguing to me then, and I think we can do better now
    because
technology will allow us to improve the look and articulation of the apes."

Regarding working with Tim Burton, the producer adds, "Tim Burton is somebody
    who
I admire and have tried to get for a lot of my previous projects, but was never
    was able
to do it." Zanuck is said to have already met twice with Burton and the project
    and will
do so again after the Academy Awards broadcast, something else he produces.

Now that the project has both a producer and a director, the previously
    announced Tim
Burton, pre-production on the project should start very quickly as well as any
    necessary
    re-writes of Bill Broyles script.

    Apes Saga Coming to DVD!

Here's a little tidbit from dvdfile.com (thanks to our tipster for
    letting us know):

Now, on to the goodies. First is probably the biggest Fox request as of
late, the PLANET OF THE APES box set. Indeed, this six-disc set
is THX-certified and all-anamorphic (yeah, baby), will arrive around 4Q
2000 and features all the films plus an extra "sixth disc" containing
the terrific making-of documentary seen on the Fox Channel, amongst
other places. However, never fear, the sixth disc will be included in
    the
box set and you won't have to mail away for it! There may be some other
goodies on the discs, but in any event it looks pretty dang cool. No
    price is yet available.

I'm completely oblivious to all this DVD lark - what does anamorphic mean?
That's something to do with the screen ratio, yes?

I'l answer, but first: I read the link, and whoever sent that post to
me in the first place copied the press release word for word, except
they changed "non- anamorphic" to "All-anamorphic". Why? I don't know.

In layman's terms (or as I understand it - feel free to correct me) -
Anamorphic is similar to Cinescope, where the actual exposed image is
stretched vertically into a 35mm frame. It's then projected through a
lens which squashes the image back into its proper perspective. On
video, this packs more visual information into the thinner widescreen
    frame, giving greater detail.

I noticed that the regular egroup likes to discuss and chat POTA related
items but would like to keep buy and sell items seperate therefore I wanted
you to know that can now be done.

I have started apecollectibles@egroups.com specifically for POTA items

I run the International Planet of the Apes Fan club located at
    http://www.dlcwest.com/~comicsape/apes.htm

This is an egroup designed specifically for those fans/collectors who want
to buy/sell/trade POTA items new and old (all forms of memorabilia)

This is a great way for you to make quick connections with other
collectors/dealers with similar interests as yours without having to bid
through auction houses and/or magazine ads.

If you have any questions please feel free to address them.
Any items related to POTA may be listed for sale or purchase.

Please include as much of a description as possible.
Item description / price / condition / year / maker etc.

Terry...that's an excellent idea....The auctions become frustrating after a
while. I look forward to seeing what everyone has for sale. Always looking to
    add to my collection.
