.htmlTesting, one...two. Is this on? I've never responded to an egroup before.
Regarding the time conflict, 3955 seems the closest to an official answer.
Though the original movie provides a date it doesn't mention it in dialogue;
true, the only reason the other movies agree is because Paul Dehn wrote 'em,
but so what? He wins. In "Escape" it's said NASA has concluded the ship came
from 3955 after they performed "microscopic scrutiny". Are we going to argue
with NASA? They landed men on the moon! And what are we to make of the
moniker ANSA in the first film and subsequent spacesuits? Something's up in
that first movie below the surface. I think Oliver Stone should investigate
it.
In other news I went to E3, the electronics expo in Los Angeles today and
got to see the new "Apes" video game (due around September). I was impressed
with many of the graphics. It's very reminiscent of the first movie (crash
landing- - not in water; cornfield hunt;etc.) but BIGGER. The ship , now
called the Casseopia, looks like the Icarus but is huge like something from
"Aliens". Other things aren't as impressive: Taylor (Ulysses now) runs like
a girl; the player gets to punch out gorillas a la TV. Storywise a video
game isn't a good match for the "Apes" concept. Atrailer for the game was
run on a loop that makes it sound like "Planet of Rambo". . . "Take back
your birthrght!" I guess commerce makes strange bedfellows. But many of the
visuals are striking and this could be a quick fix of 'new movie' until the
real thing shows up.- - - Jeff Krueger

better than the cats and dogs thoery. I think it had something to do with
Apes just mimicing humans until they eventually took over. I think it would
be cool if the new planet of the apes movie adressed a cooler new millenium
way of the ape-o-lution, possibly a geneticly enhanced ape breeds...or dare i
say it...a monkey returning from one of the cheesy 150 sci-fi movies returns
from space super intelligent! Any comments?...please dont comment on my

.html"Ape" fans may want to seek out the 1971 movie "Schlock". The directorial
debut of John Landis ("Jake's Friend" in "Battle For the Planet of the
Apes") , the ape creature was created by newly christened "Apes"meister Rick
Baker and feature a one-time only acting job by "Apes" legend John Chambers.
A 1999 video was released by Englewood Productions (www. englewd.com). If
the new "Apes" comes out in 2001 as planned it will fall on the 30th
Anniversary of "Schlock"!- - - Jeff Krueger

I've ordered some of FSM's Silver Age Classics CDs before, so I'll vouch for
their excellentness (is that a word? It is now). Believe it or not, when
they first started releasing them they asked for ideas as to what the fans
wanted. I suggested "The Omega Man" and "Beneath the PotA". They released
"The Omega Man" last month! I'm on a roll!
Anyway, for those of you who haven't been to the website, here are the full
details (the website has a full track listing though) :

Any kind of news on what the storyline is? With the name "Ulysses" I was
kind of wondering if they were maybe going back to the original novel.
And there's nothing wrong with punching out a few gorillas here and there -

.htmlE3: Yes, "Apemania" was there. It was basically a trade show with a $200
per person admission (yes, two hundred dollars). I brought Natalie Trundy
with me, so Fox Interactive kinda ushered us in (and gave us passes for all
3 days). "Apemania" went bananas as usual but "Apes" was a last minute
afterthought this year, because the game was supposed to come out last year;
this time there was no Statue of Liberty or cage.
As for the storyline, Fox provided me with a press kit but there was
nothing that hasn't already been said. For those interested about the game,
there was a full page article in "Cinescape" a couple issues ago (I think
the one with the big metal X on the cover). The game is a mix of the first
movie, Boulle's book and some new stuff. It looks like what a remake of the
first movie would be ; the same clothes, a bigger ship but looks the same;
there's the cornfield hunt; they even find that one of the astronauts died
during the flight!). But the apes have more technology like in Boulle's book
(and of course the name Ulysses, though Boulle's character was Ulysse ).
Added to that , says the press kit, are "renegade baboons and mandrill
assassins- - - maybe even Barbera Mandrell? Dr. Zauis, Zira, Ursus and
Cornelius are all there. The game adds laser weapons and environment
weapons. There's 15 main levels with 60 "distinct" sublevels, including
ruined cities, research labs, mine shafts, military bases and villages. I
was much more impressed with the settings than I was with the characters.
It'll be available for Playstation, Sega Dreamcast and Windows 95/98.
Overall, I was impressed with it, but I'm no videogame expert. Oh,
"Apemania" had two Novas, and we all know that two Novas are better than
one! Yes, sometimes gorillas deserve to be punched, but it's not very
realistic.
Bill Broyles' script: I hear it's fantastic; he's a former Vietnam vet and
journalist so he might have more to say than the average screenwriter. But
they are currently rewriting it, apparently to appeal to the teens that buy
theatre tickets. Hopefully they'll find a happy medium. I have alot of faith
in Burton and Zanuck (Zanuck says this movie is very personal to him). We'll
see.- - - Jeff Krueger

Sometimes, one does wonder if technology gets you anywhere. But then, we

the correct date. Plus there's the fact that in BENEATH, Brent said that
he took an Earth time reading BEFORE re-entry. I'm more inclined to
believe that his clock was correct, and Taylor's was damaged upon
splashdown but then later corrected itself when Dr. Milo salvaged it
(perhaps the water threw it out of whack). And remember, it was Taylor's
ship that they returned in. And the date (according to the President)
that NASA scientists read from the chronometer? 3955.
Chris L.
From: "Jack Krueger" < williejoe@...>
Testing, one...two. Is this on? I've never responded to an egroup before.
Regarding the time conflict, 3955 seems the closest to an official
answer.
Though the original movie provides a date it doesn't mention it in
dialogue;
true, the only reason the other movies agree is because Paul Dehn wrote
'em,
but so what? He wins. In "Escape" it's said NASA has concluded the ship
came
from 3955 after they performed "microscopic scrutiny". Are we going to
argue
with NASA? They landed men on the moon! And what are we to make of the
moniker ANSA in the first film and subsequent spacesuits? Something's up
in
that first movie below the surface. I think Oliver Stone should
investigate it.

experts did it. Taylor's ship was run by computer. That's also presumably
how it was able to fly and return to the past.
More curious is how Milo was able to find the ship in the first place and
salvage it (and how Cornelius and Zira were in it, since we see them at home
as the army marches off; presumably the ship was already salvaged and the
exit of the big whigs was their cue to ride like the wind to the

I sometimes wonder if Paul Dehn put a trapdoor in place for another sequel,
but was maybe foiled when they blew up the Earth at the end. The bit I'm
referring to is the comment by Zira, "At least our baby, when it's born..."
Seems like a meaningless throwaway line at first but the more I hear it the
more I think it was Dehn or somebody laying the groundwork in case another
sequel was requested. (And sure enough, their baby ended up playing a big
part in the sequels...)

I think i saw something on an A+E special about POTA that said something to
the effect of, the original pota wasnt expected to have a sequel, but they
made one. Then beneath wasnt expected to have a sequel, but it did. Then
after that they started leaving easy portals for future movies, like the
talking baby caesar at the end of escape, and the ape revolutrion in battle,
and the statue crying in conquest. Of course this is what i remeber,
therefore its heresay and speculation.

But what Alan said is also very thoughtful. I heard Cornelius and Zira talk
about their baby in "Beneath" but it never really dawned on me how ironic
that is. I just thought, "Well, of course Zira is pregnant because she has
the baby in "Escape". " But in retrospect it's the only real link to the
third movie. It's true they weren't planning another sequel (that's why the
lapses between "Beneath" and "Escape" can be forgiven) and the ending of
"Beneath" was an afterthought. In the "Behind the POTA" documentary Heston
gets credit for that ending an director Ted Post later took him to task in
the excellent magazine "Apesfan", since he hated that ending but it was
basically forced on him. - - - Jeff Krueger

.htmlJust letting you all know, I'm now working on my Planet of the Apes
Multimedia Site, just getting geered up for the remake!
I hope :(
It's at: www.prophecysite.com
The frame work on the site is now only being layed out, but at least you'll
have an idea as to how this thing is going to look.
Any one have the lost scenes of battle? I would love to mpeg them for the
site.
Later.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm getting at - perhaps Paul Dehn did have another

everyone's information, James Naughton will also be on the season finale
of Ally McBeal this coming Monday, reprising his role as Ally's father.

TOMORROW (May 26) is the 30th Anniversary of "Beneath"! Except for "Battle"
I liked "Beneath" the least but in some ways it's more popular than the
original. - - - Jeff Krueger
P. S. : The August issue of "Star Log" will have an interview with Natalie
Trundy.

Where are you ordering your Medicom figures?
I've seen them at the Toy Syndicate, but have
hesitated ordering because the price is so steep.
I know they're worth it... Just can't turn loose of
the cash right now. What was in wave 2?
Thanks,
Steve

They CAN'T make a NOva like in teh original. They take too much heat
for it.
IF she's in it, I got a bad feeling Lisa Marie (Ed Wood, Mars Attacks,
Sleepy Hollow) is first in line . . .

else but when they do it it works. Yeah, "Titanic" is the most expensive
movie ever but it was worth it (and then some). They even built Fox Baja
Studios as part of it's budget. And what other studio could bring Spielberg
and Tom Cruise together and not sell the farm (I hear they've agreed to take
their money out of the profits instead of up front for "Minority Report",
though their share of the profits is reportedly 60%). And I've also heard
that Fox considers Burton and "Planet of the Apes" their stars, so I don't
think there will be a prima donna issue (Fox expects to reap a harvest!).
As for whether they'll find actors who can play convincing apes, I assume
that's the point. They grabbed Rick Baker, the acknowledged master of cinema
apes so that they would look convincing, but only the actors can complete
it. As for Burton, he brought in a movement specialist for the scene in
"Mars Attacks" where Lisa Marie has to walk like a Martian (all the other
Martians were created with computers). She was good and it was the most
acclaimed scene in the movie (actually, it was the only acclaimed scene in
the movie). So, the casting directors have a job ahead of them but I think
they'll do a good job.- - - Jeff Krueger

.htmlI recall Lisa Marie having dialogue in "Sleepy Hollow". As for her
outfits, they were nice but weren't exactly skimpy. As for the makeup, the
challenge is for the actors to emote, as they did in the original. The apes
created for "Congo" or "Mighty Joe Young can't carry a "Planet of the Apes"
scene. The closest Baker has come is the title character in "Harry and the
Hendersons", but even that won't due. Baker is a makeup artist's makeup
artist, and I believe he will rise to the challenge and not just reuse old
parts. - - - Jeff Krueger

Sorry Phil,
Gotta correct you on this one. Rick's designs for the new film
(due to start filming in October) are prosthetic designs with the
actors wearing prosthetic teeth as well. So they are sticking to
tradition and not going the animatronic route. They may still use
experienced make-up and suit performers, but the lead characters have yet
to be cast. And of course there's still the plaguing question, "Will
the film actually get made?"

I was hoping you'd chime in, Brian. You think they're going to put
"name" actors under all that shit? As I said, I'd be surpised. Then
again, I'd kill to play an ape in the remake . . . I still think it'll
be nobodies under the gunk, with celebrity voices added later.

Well, now I'm really curious to see these designs. Once I heard Tim
Burton, I assumed it would be real apes with cgi mouths saying the
words, liek that HBO commercial from a couple years back . . . <.html

Yeeeeeees, but let's say we're going by the amount of makeup used in the
first movie. I can't imagine it'll be less makeup than that. As I like
pointing out to people, POTA was a pretty out there idea at the time. I
think actors on the whole would be less adventurous today. On the other
hand, actors seem to like Time Burton. Anyone have any guesses on which
Burton regulars will show up?
If the lead (Taylor) is young now, I'd say it's Johnny Depp's role to
turn down.
Nicholson would make an interesting Zaius. So would Martin Landau. But
I'll bet Jeffrey Jones ends up as some kind of orangutan. And if it IS
just voice casting, count on Michael Gough showing up as well.
Zira - Winona Ryder?
Cornelius - Lucas Haas? He's got the ears already.
Anyone else? <.html

Burton has developed an
interesting pattern. Since "Batman" he has always done a big budget flick,
followed by "stretching" with Johnny Depp. "Batman" begat "Edward Scissorhands",
"Batman Returns" begat "Ed Wood", "Mars Attacks" begat "Sleepy Hollow'. By that
pattern, it doesn't look like Depp's turn (who's signed for "From Hell"
anyway). The person who comes to mind is Michael Keaton, who has also done
3 Burton films. I didn't see him there but Keaton was reportedly a guest at the
30th Anniversary party of "Apes". Maybe he's a fan? Keaton as Cornelius? Other
than that I don't forsee big stars like Nicholson doing it. Fox has enough to
spend on! But Burton always makes interesting casting choices, so I can't
imagine what he'll have lined up .- - - Jeff Krueger

One thing from the liner notes I never knew - the voice over at the end,

.htmlWell, "Beneath" seems to be the fave sequel for alot of people. Visually,
it rivals the original and, of course, it's the only one with most of the
cast returning. But my vote goes to "Escape" (which happens to be the first
"Apes" production I ever saw). It's got the blandest visuals but the story
and performances always grab me. "Beneath"'s script is a wash as far as I'm
concerned. But the nice thing is that the 5 movies are all so different from
each other and I think that's why they hold the interest. Before "Apes",
sci-fi sequels basically meant remaking the original ("Frankenstein", "The
Fly", what have you). After "Apes", filmakers started taking popular
concepts or characters and shaking them up. George Lucas got alot of credit
for that, but I say it started with "Apes"!- - - Jeff Krueger

.html "Beneath" I suppose wins the sequel award for me, but it's only an
award I give by default. I really for the most part have little use
for any of the POTA sequels because taken as a whole, they pretty
much cheapen the quality of the magnificence the original film had
(though not to the same embarrassing lengths as say the third and
fourth "Jaws" films did to their brilliant original). "Beneath" at
least revisits the familiar terrain of the original film, but for me
the ending is simply too annoying. Charlton Heston is a man I
admire for a lot of things, but his selling the downer ending after
contributing so little to the film is something I will never forgive
him for. (Heston it seems, has a strange penchant for downer endings
in his sci-fi films, as "The Omega Man" and "Soylent Green" also
attest)
I am probably in the minority of those who enjoy POTA not because of
the ape society or the social comment, but because of the fascinating
character study the film offers in Taylor and his odyssey from
misanthrope to defender of the species only to see his newfound faith
shattered and his original instincts vindicated. To me, the most
interesting sequel idea to explore could easily have left out the
apes altogether and just focused on Taylor and Nova continuing their
journey across what else remained of the Earth, and whether or not
Taylor would be willing to take on the responsibility of reeducating
humanity, or whether he would just decide it was just punishment for
what humanity had wrought in destroying itself, and live out the rest
of his life with Nova as a sheltered recluse in the first sanctuary
he could find. For me, once Taylor and Nova were gone from the
scene, there really wasn't anyone else for me in the films to latch
on too with the same kind of fascination as he provided in the first
film.

.htmlI have just completed an original POTA fanfic story that is a
crossover with the universe of another favorite sci-fi saga of mine,
the 1978-79 TV series, "Battlestar Galactica." This story, which
took me two years to write and is quite lengthy (1.2 MB) can be found
at the Battlestar Galactica site under "Crossover stories" at
http://members.xoom.com/_XMCM/bsgtigger/bsg-page.html"
This story represented my desire to offer another take on events
following the end of the original POTA movie, hence it takes place
six months after the original movie and disregards the events of the
sequels, although story elements and ideas from "Beneath" are
retained (in effect here's a variation of the plot of "Beneath" to an
exten) and some subtle nods are made to the rest of the series as
well. I have received a good deal of positive feedback on this
from my fellow "Galactica" fans, including those who had never
appreciated the richness of the POTA saga before and I'm hoping that
some POTA fans will be able to offer their thoughts as well.
I also encourage those of you in this group if you have ever had the
desire to write original fanfic stories of your own set in any part
of the vast POTA universe, whether they represent "filling in the
gaps" (like say the events between "Escape" and "Conquest") or
offering new interpretations on old story ideas, or continuing the
saga where "Battle" left off, to go ahead and do it! Fanfic writing
has become a quite popular feature of other sci-fi web sites
for "Star Trek", "Star Wars", "Battlestar Galactica" and other
classics, and I think POTA could use this dimension too. If a
website would be willing to act as a sort of repository for these
kinds of stories, I think the results would provide a good deal of
enjoyment to all of us.

aired on television. Not only did I see it, but my brother and I recorded it
on our tape recorder and heard it million times. VHS was only an idea at the
time.
It got to the point where we heard it so many times that we knew the whole
movie by heart, word for word.
That's just how much we loved POTA when we were kids.
I can't wait to see this remake.

I too am working on a POTA related story. A novel to be precise. I have
placed it such that I can afford not to mention POTA at all, and give the
reader the same premise as would anyone coming to the original film for
the first time. (The hard part). It is and it isn't a fanfic story. I thought
it would be a good idea for someone to wonder at the rest of that world,
what did it contain? Who did it contain? It also has a shattering conclusion
- one that us humans in the present would find more than a little disturbing,
given recent events. We are much closer to a Planet of the Apes than you
think...
I am about 3/4 the way through ca. 75000 words of 100,000, 1st draft.

.htmlHowdy,
I was lucky enough to be present when when Bill Mechanic ( CEO of TCF)
addressed the Australian staff on a recent visit to Australia to talk about
upcoming products.
He indicated that the majority of the cast for the new APES movie would most
likely be unknowns.
Read into that what you will.
He was also adamant that they were not going to rush the production for a
Summer '01 release and that they were happy to wait and make it "right". So
it could be an Xmas '01 release if it means making it "right".
He also said that if Matrix 2&3 weren't moving into the Aust. studios after
Star Wars Ep2 that "APES" would have been filmed here at Fox Studios
Australia.
Now, that would have been cool considering we ( Home Ent) are situated on
the lot.
My fantasies of bumping into Lisa Marie in a loin cloth at the coffee bar
have been ruined!
D'oh!

For me, BATTLE has a special distinction, because it was the one I
almost NEVER got to see. Before talk shows, Channel 7 in New York would
run a 4:30 movie in a 90 minute slot. They'd have theme weeks, like war
movies, Godzilla movies, etc. When Planet of the Apes week would arrive,
they'd spend two days showing the first one; the cliffhanger of part 1
was always Taylor speaking for the first time in front of the apes. So,
they'd only get to Conquest by Friday, never airing Battle in the same
time frame. In fact, the first time I saw it, I had to stay up until 3AM
to watch the damn thing (no VCRs back then). <.html

Hey, I always wondered that too. Were there other apes on the pacific coast,
was there a camp of humans feree from ape rule? was there more breeds of apes?
That's really an untapped content. <.html

Certainly that's a powerful part of the first film, but I don't think
it's an either/or situation. I can love that aspect of the first film,
fully appreciate it as a stand alone piece, yet still be completely
astonished at the bizarre curve balls the screenwriters created to
further the series. That they made FIVE films so different from one
another, quality aside, is astonishing. Imagine the pitch meetings:
"Taylor goes into the desert, and finds UNDERGROUND MUTANT TELEPATHIC
HUMANS!" It was an insane idea. Then they blow up the world and still
come up with three sequels. Outrageous.
To me, the most

.htmlYeah, tell me about it.
I wish I had a VCR when they would show the uncut version of Battle, along
with the Return to the Planet of the Apes on saturday mornings.
I can't find those POTA cartoons anywhere on tape.
What a bummer!

They're all over Ebay. I think if you watch them now, you'll be
disappointed. A friend found them for me a while back, and they were
terrible. <.html

Thanks I'll check it out.
