You folks may want to try Jeff KMAN at
<Zaius53761@...>

He might be able to find you some cartoons on tape as well as
collections of commercials, interviews and hard to find tv stuff.

The POTA cartoons had lousy animation and writing (par for the course in
the '70's) but they had an interesting story arc. It was a continuing story
instead of each episode being self-contained like the live-action show. For
those who like POTA stories they're worth a look. They'll probably be
officially released next year with the movie.- - - Jeff Krueger

My favorite was the one with Dick Dasterdly and Smedly, or was that the ol'
"Stop that Pigeon" cartoon?

Yikes!!! You guys have me wishing the movie would just disappear
again.

I'm all for a whole new story, not a remake of the first film. There
can never be a better Cornelius or Zira, so why try?

As for Nicholson, if I never see him ruin another movie, it'll be soon
for me. I hated that he was cast as The Joker---way too
predictable....

Wow!
Now that sounds cool.

Thanks Brian, I will.
I just saw POTA on ebay, man they have a lot of stuff!
I really liked the autographed photos, something cool for the site.

If Jeff can get me some rare commercials and interviews, I can mpeg them for
the site.

Thanks again.

They guy from Time Machine Collectibles has a monopoly on many of the
POTA autographed pics, and runs websites for many of the supporting
cast. Natalie Trundy sold the original Lawgiver statue through him a
year or so ago.

My favorite Ursus pic ever:

I heard Mathew Maconahey(SP?) is up for the Taylor part. Anyone heard
anything about that?

Well, you're the man inside, Brian! You tell us.

Hmm. Matthew McConaghey. He's never again equalled his debut in Dazed
and Confused, but he's a better choice than many others his age.

They're all over Ebay. I think if you watch them now, you'll be

For me, Escape is the weakest of the five. Not just because of the "bland
visuals" (I seem to recall thinking when I first saw it, "this isn't Planet
of the Apes, it's Planet of the Humans") but because of the first half of
the film. I'm not bothered by it being dated, it's just that seems a bit too
comedic. That said, I wouldn't go as far as saying I don't like it. There's
no such thing as a bad Apes movie. :-) However, as soon as Zira says "Shock
my foot, I'm pregnant" the film becomes serious again, and consequently I
love the second half of the film.

You should both pick up a copy of the Adventure Comics 4-issue miniseries
"Ape City". It tends to provoke a love-it or hate-it reaction from fans, I'm
definitely in with the former. I thought it was great that they tried
something a bit different.

Basic premise: astronauts once again come searching for Taylor, and land in
the future, but this time they land in Europe (France I think). Basically,
the US was ravaged by the nuclear war but Europe remained mostly intact.
Consequently we have a relatively modern ape society, completely oblivious
to what is happening in the US, where apes drive motorcycles, hang out in
nightclubs, fight ninjas...

Alan Maxwell mentioned he didn't like the humor in "Escape". Well, I
didn't like the humor in the original ("Human See, Human Do") . I thought it
was very forced most of the time and my one sticking point. But humor is a
proper element, especially with a story that might be hard to swallow. I
thought "Escape " was better than any of the others in handling a
combination of moods. It wasn't one note. Visually it sucked, thanks to the
Fox accountants. And the "modern day" apes had awful costumes. Bill Blake
told me that the production wanted the services of these brothers who were
renown for portraying apes but they insisted on using their own costumes.
This screwed up "Escape" and also "Conquest". But otherwise, "Escape" is my
favorite "Apes" sequel. So there! - - - Jeff Krueger

As I said before, I think the sequels must at least be commended for not
replaying the first film. They came up with soem really twisted ways to
keep the story going, and each film adds SOMETHING to the canon:

Beneath: ruins of New York, Alpha/Omega bomb and worshippers and best of
all, Ursus!

Escape: Despite the low price tag, this was one of the more mind bending
trips in the series. Cornelius and Zira go back in time in *Taylor's
ship*. Does Taylor's own arrival in the future directly lead to the
creation of the Planet of the Apes?

Conquest: Pretty humorless and hardcore, considering teh film that
preceded it. Would the revolution have happened if Caesar was not there?
Cornelius mentioned an ape named "Aldo" as being the savior . . .

Battle: Neat Lawgiver wraparound, and crying Caesar statue. Does Aldo
sense Caesar's usurping his role in history? Or does soem revisionism
take place between 2670 and 39 -fifty something?

All powerful concepts to my ten year old brain at the time.

Hey Gang,

Now here's one topic that got my attention, autographs.

Anyone that would like to have second opinions on autographs for sale on eBay
or other sites, feel free to submit or contact us for comment. Sometimes
autographs that pop up on eBay are fakes, and bad ones at that. However,
Terry Martin at TIME MACHINE COLLECTIBLES is probably one of the most
respected people out there dealing. His stuff is always top notch.

There have been a few scam artists trying to sell fakes, sometimes not even
realizing that they've got a Roddy signature on a Kim Hunter photo, etc.

We have an extensive file of letters and signatures from the POTA cast at our
studio, and one of our APEMANIA cast memebrs was a dear friend of Mr.
McDowall, so we are all too happy to help verify signatures. We can also
connect folks with other respected autograph dealers in North America who
also have no problem verifying signatures.

A honorable seller will let you get second opinions before buying, especially
on-line. Beware the ones that don't want second opinions.

Just thought I'd chime in on that one.

I recorded all of them off television (The 4:30 Movie of course) every
year. Those of you who watched no doubt remember how badly butchered the
films were (only a 90 minute time slot to begin with). After about 4
years worth of recording (they showed different versions of the films
each year, so you always saw different footage) I pieced together a
complete audio version of BENEATH without ever actually having seen the
movie the full way through (except when CBS ran it in the early 70's, but
I was only about 6 years old at the time and it was 1980 when I was
making the tape). Believe it or not, I got everything in the correct
sequence (I was able to match it up with a version I recorded in the
early 80's- ABC was showing a movie every Saturday night at 11:30). I was
always pretty proud of that. I probably should have pursued a career in
film/sound editing.

Thought I was the only person who remembered The 4:30 Movie. Do you
remember that they had two different music themes (man, I'd love to get
copies of that music). But anyway, they did show BATTLE occasionally.
Sometimes it was on a Sci-Fi week where they'd show things like THE OMEGA
MAN and SOYLENT GREEN, sometimes on Super Hero week with things like
BATMAN (1966) and WONDER WOMAN (1973). I always remember thinking it was
weird that BATTLE was shown by itself as opposed to showing a 4:30 Movie
on Saturday afternoon.

Does anyone remember in 1979 when they ran episodes of the TV series for
the entire week and had Roddy McDowell (as Galen) host each day? I don't
remember them being shown as the prepackaged two hour TV movies, but
rather as one long story. Kinda cool for a 12 year old to see.

BENEATH is actually my favorite, and I do agree with Jack that in some
ways it's more popular than the original. And- for the purpose of
discussion- I liked the ending. I thought it was a very powerful
antinuclear war message. Taylor said (or rather implied) that the bomb
was built as a deterrent to nuclear war, much the same way the U.S. and
Russia tried to one-up each other with their respective nuclear arsenals
and the whole M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction) scenario. But I think
one of the message of the film is that the existence of such a
destructive device will eventually assure it's use.

Then you've also got the point of view where Taylor- at the moment of his
death- passed judgement on the world. Or more specifically what it had
become. The Ape Society in some ways had become as bad as the human one
that preceded it, and the surviving "intelligent" humans were still
practicing the same hypocrisy humankind always did
(i.e. "The bomb is a weapon of peace", "We never harm anyone Mr. Brent,
You're going to harm her").

When you think about it, none of the POTA movies have a "happy" ending,
which is usually par for the course for any allegorical story of this
nature.

And just to wrap things up, here's something for BENEATH fans (or any ape
fans) to mull over: Before you even find out that the atomic bomb the
mutants have is the Doomsday bomb, the ending of the film is hinted at in
a BIG way in another scene. Does anyone know what I'm referring to?
Here's a hint: religion figures into the scene in a very subdued manner.

The answer will be forthcoming...

I guess that's the thing about humour, different strokes for different
folks. I just thought that after all the other Ape films, seeing Cornelius &
Zira dressing up in 70s clothes, Zira taking a bath, Zira doing a women's
lib speech, etc. just didn't live up to the rest of the films. Of course,
the key factor could be that Escape was the last PotA movie I saw, and
having seen it a long time after the other four perhaps it was always going
to be a disappointment to some degree.

Loved the scene with Cornelius at the boxing match though.

I don't know about all that, I just love it because I love down endings.
Being a young person who grew up with the Star Wars films, I love the SW
series as much as anyone but if there is one bad thing about them it's Star
Wars made happy endings popular again. Miserable endings were quite popular
up until then, and at least four of the Apes films had down endings. Even
Battle's happy ending was tainted with the ambiguous statue scene.

You know it's a funny thing.
People can say what they want about POTA sequals, but in my point of view,
POTA sequals are ten times better than Star Wars sequals.
Return of the Jedi and Phantom Menace proved that theory.

POTA holds up against the best, even 30 years later.
How Interesting.

I would submit however that the first film already made that point
and that in fact, this was nothing more than a case of the studio
bowing to pressure from Charlton Heston. Remember, *no one* thought
of that ending at all until he came up with it, solely as a way for
him to avoid ever appearing in another sequel again. There was no
intent to make an anti nuclear war message at all in the film. And
I think it was a bad decision in every sense.

> I don't know about all that, I just love it because I love down

I'm the total opposite. I despise them (I'm probably one of the few
people who is sick and tired of all the complaints about the
prologue/epilogue of the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers")
and I also think the idea that down endings are somehow
more "artistic" is a bit of a tired cliche. What astonishes me is
how "Beneath" ended up with a G rating with all the shooting and
violence at the end, culminated with the kind of ending that I don't
think any six year old should have been subjected to.

Hey everybody,

Someone mentioned several posts back that the Ursus quote was a play on
some famous quote, "The only good indian, is a dead indian." I vaguely
remember hearing that as well. Anybody know who said it and when? I'll try
and research that a bit. Okay, and it's killing me; where the heck is this
religous scene in Beaneath that supposedly foreshadowes the ending? Can't
figure it out, which is kinda dissapointing for me.... :)

I thought the reference was to "Animal Farm", "the only good human is a dead

Can't remember that.

Quick costume Q - just saw a chimp costume from Planet where there is no
brown hieroglyphics on the brown bib, but there are hieros on the
sleeves. They, and all leather on the sleeves, are GREEN. Never saw
this before. Any info?

I noticed some strange combinations in the TV series as well.
One of the chimp surgeons had a blue suit with the brown bib,
but had a medalion hanging over the bib. I'm assuming some
sort of medical symbol/glyph. I've always assumed that the
hieroglyphics indicated social status or possibly...vocation?
Interesting though...

The background Chimps from BENEATH had no "glyphs" on the chest, and all of the
sleeve leathers were green for the males. The Chest Glyphs on the chimps also
denoted class status, and of course not all chimps were scientist. Some just
visited museums and flea markets on the street.

Some older reels and stills from the films have yellowed or "pinked-out" with
time, so the green leather appears to look brown on film, but they were actually
green.

All of the glyphs were removed for BATTLE, with the exception of the John
Huston's Lawgiver jacket, they left that intact. Reason being? Maybe the apes
hadn't had a society long enough to warrent all the new "glyph-erature".

Background glyphs were made from vacuformed plastic and lined with felt. "Hero"
or principle character glyphs were made from embossed leather, in most cases. So
if you see those babies pop up on eBay, GRAB 'EM!!! They are rare as hell!

Did the glyphs mean anything? Or was it just artistic licence. did anyone work out
what each symbol meant. I know this sounds crazy, but on some other science fiction
sagas, all this sort of stuff was worked out. A bit like JRRT and his careful
elvish scripts.

Beats me, but on a set of blueprints from POTA that I have, there's a
font laid out that was never used in the film. Normal alphabet letters,

I'm fairly sure at that point in time the MPAA didn't have the strict
guidelines they do today. Take for example Brent's death scene in
BENEATH- being riddled with bullets and blood spurting out all over the
place. PG-13 today at the very least, and probably an R if the scene was
    bloodied up a bit more.

I have to say this is an absolutely brilliant package. The guy who
produced it (the same person who runs Film Score Monthly) is obviously
not only a fan of Leonard Rosenman but also POTA in general. The liner
notes are very well written (especially the track by track descriptions)
and I think it's very cool that they decided to include the music from
the original soundtrack Lp (which is where all the dialogue bits referred
to below come from). It was also nice to finally know why the music on
the Lp was so different from the score actually used in the movie. My
only complaint (and it's a small one) is that unlike the Mutant Mind
Control SFX, they did not include the "drone" that played in the
background while Brent and Nova were exploring the underground city. I do
like the piece Rosenman composed (a good amount of which ended up being
used during the final scene in the Cathedral) but I thought the drone/hum
gave the scene more of a 'surreal' feel.

Also, the booklet (16 pages) contains a lot of photos, a few of which
I've never seen before (CH relaxing between takes in the jail cell, Linda
Harrison (anyone know who the guy sitting next to her on the bench is?
Ted Post perhaps?) between takes of the Mass of the Holy bomb, a really
cool still of Taylor and Brent fighting. And that one of Taylor
detonating the bomb with Mendez lying dead at the bottom of the steps
(you don't see his body in the film for some reason though).

Needless to say, it's an absolute must for Apes fans. Go to
    www.filmscoremonthly.com for all the details.

It would have been even more of a downer if they left in the Alpha Omega

I have to admit that I like down endings sometimes too. And a lot of the

Once a Haack, always a hack. Here's another one for you: in ESCAPE when the
three Ape-O-Nauts land on the beach, Roddy McDowall wore his Cornelius tunic
underneath his Appollo suit for many of the shots!!! How's that for devotion?

Yeah I noticed that, but it was all over the place wasn't it? I seem to
recall that the inverted cross was a piece of symbolism that was used
    extensively in the film.

I'm only guessing but the inverted cross is the symbol of the bomb.
Notice how they make that symbolism when they worship the bomb in that scene
    with Nova and Brent.

The bomb's symbol is an inverted cross.

    OK-

It's during the scene in the desert where the Lawgiver appears to the
Gorilla Army. Most every religion (I'm familiar with) has their own
mythology about the end of the world, and a good amount of them indicate
at that point in time, God (or whatever the respective religion's
interpretation of 'God' is) will come back (Christianity in particular
states that Christ will return to Earth). Remember that in the Ape
society, the Lawgiver is perceived much the same way Christianity
perceives Christ: as a prophet. So the vision of the Lawgiver- bleeding,
no less- was a warning to the Apes (and a premonition to the audience) of
what would happen if they continued on. Of course, this brings up the
question of whether or not the mutants knew exactly what type of bomb
they possessed. Were they aware of what it could do and subsequently used
religious symbolism when trying to scare off the Apes? Or did they not
know and tap into the Apes psyche and come up with an image that would
cause fear, and this same image turned out to be a foreshadowing of
things to come. It's actually a pretty disturbing visual when you think
about it- imagine seeing a giant, bleeding, statue of Christ and the type
of reaction it would provoke in people who saw it.

Granted, this is a bit of an interpretation my part, but that's one of
the things I love about this particular movie. A lot of things are
"written in" to the story and you have to take the time to think about
them- it isn't all spoon fed to the audience. Take the inverted crosses-
they represented the bomb, but there wasn't long, lingering images of the
crosses in the film. They were in the background and the viewer had to
pick up on it. Also (like Alex pointed out) the Sign of the Bomb the
mutants made at the end of the Mass was a visual reference to the
bomb/crosses, but how many times did we all watch the movie before it
clicked with us what they were doing?

Anyway, enough rambling for one night.

What's really neat is that the base of the Addar Dr. Zaius model kit
duplicates that bomb/cross symbol perfectly. It's a beautiful base for a
kid's model kit from the 70s.

Yeah, the underground mutants of Beneath come from the generations of Mendez
from Battle for the Planet of the Apes.

The Alpha Omega Bomb appears in the movie Battle but later cut, so that the
future would remain more open than sealed.

Sort of like Terminator: "The future is not set."
Pretty Cool, although I would have liked it to remain uncut.
That way the tear from Ceasar's eye at the end of Battle would have made
      more sense.
But a tear of sorrow, or tear of joy is how it remained.

The final question "?" To be or not to be.

Has anybody heard anything new about Volume 2 of the POTA archives
      trading cards?

I seem to remember reading awhile back that a 2nd set, dealing
primarily with the TV show was to be produced.

Anyone got one, or a picture of one?

The archives Collector Card series was put out by Inkworks (was it) last year?
You can find full sets minus the "chase cards" on eBay from time to time.
Dealers are constantly selling the chase cards seperately on eBay as well.

        God bless you!

        I have a question:

        - Arthur P. Jacobs will like to produce a PLANET OF THE APES TV Series, in 1971 or 1972. Do you know what or how Jacobs will be the Jacobs TV series?

        Kisses,

        Adami and Tina

        Hi From Australia Natalie,

Let me say it is an honour to "talk" to you - next to Roddy I think you (and
your late husband) would have to be the most consistent link in the Planet
of the Apes enigma. I am a long time POTA fan since childhood and a
collector of Vintage (and new to a lesser extent) POTA toys and memorabilia.
        A few questions:

Are you going to make a cameo appearance in the new movie?

Also, have you been approached for any feedback on script drafts?

I believe you had (and recently sold) the original Lawgiver statue from
Battle - do you have any other trophies (props, costumes, toys etc) and if
so are any of them for sale?

        Michael
