Boy! Your not kidding when comes to the U.K. they're Items are always
expensive when they place them on e-bay auctions.
Those inkwork autograph cards mostly start off at $40.00 +
I mean if it's hard to find I'll pay the price, but I feel a bit uneasy
sending money so far away from my pocket! :o)
The cost of living must be really high there.
Oh, well.

.html My local, well meaning comic book dealer had a little surprise for me
this weekend... All four issues of the Adventure Comics "Ape City"
mini series. It was being offered cheap so out of curiosity I bought
it.
Now the Adventure comics are relatively rare in the UK. I'd read
"Urchaks Folly" which I actually thought was pretty good and "Blood
of the Apes" which was silly but fun. But "Ape City"... It was
appalling! The worst art I've ever seen. The most stupid story I've
ever read, the most childish writing I've ever come across in a comic
book... Was this the worst Ape story ever? (I'd always thought the
old Marvel "Pirate ship" series was up until I read this)There are
still a lot of Adventure issues I've yet to find. Should I bother?
Were they all this bad? Did Charles Marshal (Writer) really make a
living out of this? <.html

Unfortunately, they were ALL that bad! LOL
If you don't have the POTA's magazine format comic from
Marvel, get those. I have them all and they are very good. <.html

I love it! I think it's great that they tried something truly different. It
was always going to divide the fans, but I fall into the section that like
it. It certainly doesn't surprise me that there are fans who hate it. And so
on to your other question...

I think you'll probably enjoy the others more, as they're closer to
"traditional" PotA. Although on the other hand MC Wyman, who drew Ape City,
also did the art on a lot of them so maybe you won't. I always liked Wyman's
art - seemed like one of the few artists who could draw the Apes well enough
that each character looked different.
Which ones have you still to read? I'll let you know my thoughts on them.
Alan
PS I always liked the Ape Riders too. <.html

.htmlTIM BURTON: I have some faith in him and Richard Zanuck. I don't forsee
Burton turning "Apes" into a teen flick despite all the talk. His main
influence is old horror movies so I don't see the connection but Burton says
he wants to retain the "message" of the original so maybe there's hope.
Perhaps all the teen talk is to give the studio some confidence, since this
is such an expensive undertaking (and Burton's box office record is not
stellar recently, "Sleepy Hollow" aside).
ERIC GREENE: I know Eric so I don't have to go to the internet, I have
pictures of him with me. He's kinda embarrassed by "Space Academy" but I
think it would be cool to have that kind of history, even if the show isn't
a masterpiece. At a sci-fi convention, Bobby Porter (Cornelius in "Battle")
commended Eric for making something of himself and not falling into the
child actor traps. By the way, there was actually an Eric Greene action
figure from "Space Academy".
COLLECTING: I got most of my old items about ten years ago before the prices
went up, especially the Mego figures which were my favorite childhood toys
(even though I busted them all in about a week back then). I've had some
losses, but they were interesting ones. I designed a birthday cake for John
Chambers and stuck a soldier ape and Burke figure on it. The ape was
stolen and Burke lost a shoe but it was for John. My Gen. Ursus or Urko
figure (the one with the helmet) , his boots have teeth marks in them from
Natalie Trundy's dog! At the prices they're going for now, it's tough for
them to be lost or damaged but it's something to tell the grandkids. I've
also collected other old stuff when I got a bargain (posters, trading cards,
magazines), but mostly I stick to the new stuff. I'm currently seeking a
Japanese connection to get a break on the Medicom figures. If nothing else,
Tim Burton's involvement means the merchandise will look interesting, so I
might collect it even if I hate the movie.
STATUE OF LIBERTY: It's my understanding that Rod Serling came up with
the ending, though Arthur Jacobs also claimed credit (he also claimed credit
for finding the novel, though Natalie Trundy says she did). Heston says in
his published diary that he improvised much of the dialogue there.
ADVENTURE COMICS: These comics, published in 1990 - '92, were an event for
me. Fans finding them now might be jaded with a new movie around the corner,
but back then there was nothing else "Ape-wise going on, and there hadn't
been for about 15 years. At their worst it was still a welcome return, and
at their best (usually the miniseries- - though I hated "Ape City" and "Ape
Nation") it was almost the good 'ol days. I think the big mistake was mostly
letting Charles Marshall run the show instead of alternating writers. I
eagerly await "Apes"' return to comics and hope someone will finally adapt
the Boulle novel.

Well, there is a great collectors book for sale on all POTA merchandise at
the time machine web site: www.timem.com
That will give you a good start in knowing what's out there and more
importantly what you would like to get your hands on.
A full history on POTA merchandise.
As far as buying, my place has always been e-bay.
There are items there you clearly won't find anywhere else.
That's where I got my Japanese Import Laser Disc Box set of POTA.
E-bay is the best place at least for now anyway, as the internet is fast
growing.

Mark Wahlberg did a good job in the pivotal role. So far I've seen that and
"Boogie Nights" and perhaps the Artist Formerly Known as Marky Mark isn't
such a bad choice for "Apes" if they insist on going for that age range.
Those who want to know more about the guy filling Charlton Heston's
loincloth are directed to the official website, www.markwahlberg.com . His
first major film was "Renaissance Man" (1994) with his prospective "Apes"
co-star Danny Devito. I like that he has the requisite rough exterior but
with a vulnerable voice. Hard to imagine him saying, "Take your stinking

To quote a review of the book I read some time ago: "Sometimes,a school
bus driving across the desert is just a school bus driving across the
desert".
Although I do appreciate the obvious effort that went into the book,
Green obviously read WAY too much into certain things, but then he
completely overlooked some of the more obvious stuff. Every few pages I
would find myself saying "What!?!" out loud while reading his
interpretations. One of the longest stretches was that since Nova was a

PS- I keep hearing about this book containing all these missing scenes

.htmlFor those who are interested in reading Eric Greene's book, the softcover
is the way to go. It's $10 cheaper and has those rare pictures of which we
speak. It's also updated (at least to 1998) about the new movie, including
quotes from James Cameron that I contributed. I basically look at it as a
rorshach test (however it's spelled) - - Eric basically puts down what comes
into his mind and each reader takes away what they can. It's one of the
most unique "Ape" books that will ever be written, well researched and Eric
makes alot of points almost everyone can agree on.
"Planet of the Apes Revisited" finally has a publisher that is thoroughly
behind it (St. Martin's Press). I've been waiting for this book for almost
15 years and Joe Russo tells me it's finally going to happen. From what I
understand, it's going to stick to the 5 movies, with not much time given to
the TV shows, the merchandise or the phenomenon. Charlton Heston is writing
the intro and it'll be dedicated to Arthur Jacobs and Roddy McDowell. It
looks to be the definitive "Apes" book. - - - Jeff Krueger

A little info on Mark Wahlberg.
When James Cameron was casting for TITANC he wanted
Wahlberg for the lead role. But Wahlberg had to decline, so Cameron went
ahead with DiCaprio.
So it should be no suprise as to why Burton went
ahead with Wahlberg, Cameron most likely had Wahlberg in mind during his
short time with the project. So Burton may
have simply agreed with the choice.
Wahlberg is a real rising talent, and a very good choice
for the role.

Here's my opinion on the choice for the lead role, it stinks. I guess
I'm being hippocritical, since I really haven't seen Wahlberg in any lead
role in a movie, but I still can't shake off the bad feeling I have of him,
partly because of his former music career. Look at the orignial, Chuck
Heston wasn't a "rising star," or a "soon-to-be famous" kinda guy. Heston
was already a VERY established actor, and very well respected. The lead and
supporting actors are probably the third most important factor in a movie,
and putting it in the hands of an amature, I don't feel, is a wise move. I
think if Burton could have casted a big name, like Tom Hanks or Russ Crowe,
the movie would have done unarguably better at the box office, win over the
critics more easily, and overall had been a better picture. Obviously, I'm
not all mighty and knowing, and there are plenty of counter-examples to what
I'm trying to say, but nevertheless, I continue to feel that Mark wasn't a
good decision; perhaps it was the best out of the options they had. I still
haven't shook off the feeling that due to a number of factors, the "remake,
sequel, prequel, whatever u want to call it," will be horrid.

make an argument for others over Wahlberg, but the ranks are pretty thin.
One thing they didn't need is a $20 million star. "Planet of the Apes"can
sell itself, thank you. Spend the money on the film. By the way, this
weekend "The Perfect Storm" (starring Marky Mark) was the box office champ
with $41.7 million (it's expected to be up to around $60 million after the
July 4rth holiday). Meanwhile, "The Patriot" (for which Mel Gibson got $25
million) made $31 million over it's first 5 days, opening two days before
"Storm". In short, Wahlberg's price is about to go up and Fox has already
snagged him.
The new issue of "Filmfax" has an interview with Kim Hunter. The current
cover of "Fetish" has a model dressed like Lisa Marie from "Mars Attacks",
showing even Tim Burton flops resonate in pop culture!- - - Jeff Krueger

I agree with this logic - Wahlberg's usually as good as his material,
but you can't hang the success or failure of any of his films on him.
Show of hands, "The Big Hit"? Anyone? "Fear"? Anyone? "Three Kings"
was a superior effort, haven't seen "Perfect Storm", but not even
Clooney (the real star of both, and also a brief contender for the Apes
lead way back when) seems to get the kudos for the films' success. Good
or bad, POTA isn't resting on Marky Mark's shoulders.
I don't know how good Wahlberg will be in the part, as I don't even know
what the part IS. It's a human. Yay. Beyond that, nada. <.html

Well, if it is a Heston type role, I believe he will be good at it.
If it's one thing that Wahlberg has besides great acting, is strong
personality.
The same personality that made Heston and Franciscus perfect for the role.
It only makes the role that much more believable.
But the baby face has got to go, put a beard on him like Heston and
Franciscus and we would be looking a whole different person.
And perfect for the role.

I doubt they will do anything arty and modernist like the original. Didn't
it win an award for the score?
Personally, I'd like something very gritty. If they set the whole thing
in a 'sci-fi' atmosphere, then perhaps minimalism wouldn't go amiss.
You can't beat that opening ape call though, and the piano resonance
that follows..... chilling almost.

Mwah-hah-ha-hah-ha-ha-hah-ha-hah-ha-bwa-ha. I don't get it.
Anyone grab the "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" soundtrack from FSM?
Leonard Rosenman did just as well if not better than Goldsmith, carried the
torch admirably. Just as experimental as the first film, same edge with a
sense of wonder and dread.
All 32 tracks (!) are morbidly fascinating. First 19 are the score, the
second 13 are from the slightly funky remixed "BPOTA" album originally
released with the film.
Play "Mass of the Holy Bomb" really loud in your backyard and watch what the
neighbor's do. <.html

Hi John,
Zira' shoes are brown. There are usually tons of
foto of Zira on eBay. Ebay sometimes can be the best library!
There's a good shot of her sitting in the wagon with Lucious and a gorilla.
That might be a shot to look for.

.html Anyone catch the blurb on Wahlberg being cast in the remake in this
weeks Time Magazine? (The one with Life on the Mississippi on the
cover) It's on page 118 in the People section. Written by Josh
Tyrangiel. Has a picture of Wahlberg smiling like Buster Poindexter.
It's titled "Damn Dirty Gen-X Ape" Here's the complete text:" Cast
Keanu Reeves as Moses in The Ten Commandments if you like. Make
Freddie Prinze Jr. into the new Judah Ben-Hur. But why, why, why must
Hollywood desecrate Charlton Heston's perfect performance as Colonel
George Taylor in Planet of the Apes? Mark (Marky Mark) Wahlberg, 29,
signed on this week to fill Heston's giant sandals as the cluelessly
histrionic time traveller in Tim Burton's reimagining of the great
ape film, tentatively scheduled for a July 4, 2001 release. (Wahlberg
has already committed to the sequel.) Gary Oldman is reportedly being
considered for the role of the evil president of the ape assembly. No
word if Wahlberg will sport a Calvin Klein loincloth." Enjoy, John <.html

about thirty minutes more with him off the floor reviewing the
Cornelius/Chimpanzee sketches. Lifecasts are required for all foam latex

no but seriously, Pee-Wee is the man, he deseves a comeback
as far as the POTA being the slut of TV series, you're forgetting that back

Cool? No! Why don't we get RuePaul as Dr. Zauis, Richard Simmons as Urko,
George Michael and Elton John could play "Ace & Gary" the bickering gorilla
roomates, and so on.
Pee-Wee Herman as Cornelius?? Will the Ape City have talking chairs? Will
there be a magic word, like "sexual deviant"?
No, Tim Burton, no. We don't need Cornelius hanging out in darkened porno
theaters "doing the cornfield roundup" with himself.
Is this thing going in the tank ALREADY? <.html

Paul Reubens as Cornelius is a freakin' excellent choice, and with
Tim Burton at the helm, it's not surprising he's gonna be involved.
What direction Burton's going to take the remake is totally up for
grabs ... maybe dark ala Batman II? Regardless, you can bet he'll
put a spin on the original ... that be good or bad is up for debate.
BTW, new to the list - was looking for latest info for PotA remake,
and figured this must be the place. Now back to hanging low ...

When I typed in regard to a "straight" remake or adaptation, all I'd meant
was whether it would be a close reworking of the original film. You know,
Taylor, Cornelius, Zaius (i.e. Marky Marky, Pee-Wee, Gary Oldman.....) and
the guys. No value judgements in regard to sexual preferences or lifestyles
intended.

Thankew, thankew. You're beautiful, really.
Still trying to get onboard the "Frazier" staff, not looking good. As usual.
Think "Sabrina the Teenaged Wench" would want me? Or what about the
inevitable "POTA" animated series based upon a lame-assed remake? (You know,
like "Clerks", only shittier.)
Have your answering machine call my answering machine. They can do lunch.
Ciao.
PS- A few "BPOTA" things noticed during TBS' broadcast this afternoon:
--Chuck's hairline went bye-bye in this one, didn't look nearly as bad in the
first film; he also looked like shit in the close-up flashbacks talking with
Nova.
--sequence when Brent changes into loincloth and vest(?) while hiding from
Nova, who's peeking and not understanding his modesty, is awkward and nice.
Only lasts a second, but they didn't have to do it. Or leave it in.
--Zira says, "At least OUR children won't yada yada yada.....". So, was she
pregnant in this already or what? She could've been speaking in a
future-perfect tense or soemthing, but given how she's with chimp the next
film and all.
--Rosenman's music really works well througout, especially after having
listened to a CD of it for a month.
--all the actors talk to frickin' fast during the scenes in Cornelius &
Zira's condo.
--the Chuck vs Poor Dead Jimmy Fran is pretty brutal, but they fight like
girls (hate the shots of Chuck kicking at the camera, too)
--When "Negro" gets waxed and is sticking to the cell door, it's obviously a
"mask" on the body in the quick two-shot with Chuck. I liked that.
--Victor Buono was really fucking huge. I mean huge. <.html

.html I think Paul Reubens will make an excellent Cornielus, given his past
working history with Tim Burton. The only problem I have with Estella
Warren is the name. Estella? The fact that she's a relative unknown
is strangely reminiscent of another unknown getting the same role
back in '67, Linda Harrison. Dye that hair black, slap on the tree
bark bikini & go to it! I also like the idea of Gary Oldman as the
ape heavy. He's out there and would definitely take the role and run
with it. All things considered, I think this thing stands a chance of
being decent. The script is the key. I hope Broyles did a good job.
And Wahlberg will be fine. He's got a pretty good track record so far
with Boogie Nights, 3 Kings, The Perfect Storm. (It's not his fault
that movie sucked. Yes, it was a bad script that killed him, not the
weather) Ape regards to all, John <.html

No kidding, it warranted a chapter in "The Actor's Life" ?? Wowzers. All I
remember from skimming a dog-eard library sale copy was him claiming to have
turned down the role in "The Omen" that went to Gregory Peck.

I believe your right, it maybe the same type characters but simply given
different names. But we'll have to wait and see.
I only hope they keep story line under raps until the release, knowing
myself I'll most likely read it and blow it for myself.

cold, without knowing what's going to happen. Might as well just go into a
suspended animation chamber & set to wake the day the film's released. But
I'd probably screw up the setting & wake up in 3978 (or 3955). Better
remember to pack a tootbrush & loincloth, just to be on the safe side. Go

From The Hollywood Reporter:
Warren dives into Burton's 'Apes' remake
Newcomer Estella Warren is in final negotiations to join Mark Wahlberg
in director Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes" remake for 20th Century
Fox. Details on the project are being keeping under wraps, but the story
is different from the original in that Wahlberg is a pilot instead of an
astronaut. It's believed that she will play Wahlberg's love interest,
but the studio would not confirm that. The project, being scripted by
William Broyles Jr., is expected to begin shooting in the fall for a
projected July 4 release. Warren, a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model
and former nationally ranked Canadian synchronized swimmer, has only
been acting for several months, having landed roles in Michael Rymer's
indie feature "Perfume" and Tapestry Films' indie feature "Tangled" (a k
a "Conspiracy of Weeds") opposite Rachael Leigh Cook. Warren went before
the cameras this week for Warner Bros./Franchise Pictures' "Champs" for
director Renny Harlin. The film, shooting in Toronto, stars Sylvester
Stallone and Til Schweiger <.html

.html Oh, good. Wrestlers.
From Coming Attractions:
Afternoon, July 13, 2000... Al Issacs over at Scoops Wrestling has an
exclusive scoop to share with us from the world of wrestling that also
pertains to the Apes remake. "I spoke with Nills Allen Stewart at a UPW
wrestling show in California the other week. He's the wrestler/actor who
played Jesse Ventura in that tv biopic and the wrestler 'Kornberg' in an
episode of ER. Anyway, he's been cast as one of the 5 lead apes. According
to Nills shooting will begin this October. He was busy going in for the face
appliances that he says will not hide the actors' features, just make them
more ape-like in appearance."
Al's scoop gives us our first real information on the type of ape makeup Tim
Burton wants to use to create his new monkeys. It sounds interesting, and if
the current plan is to use the face of the actor as a base for the ape
makeup, it's a completely different approach than the earlier animatronic
ape models idea that Stan Winston Studios wanted to create.

.htmlHere's my 50 cents on some recent "Ape" stuff:
THE CASTING: Super models? Wrestlers? Pee Wee Herman? It definitely sounds
like Burton wants to make it his own. Actually, there's a supermodel AND a
wrestler in Fox's "X-Men", pretty much the studio's last hope to save the
summer (it opened today). A while back we had a supposed casting sheet that
laid out the new characters. While we have to take that with a grain of salt
it did mention a slave trading comic ape sidekick for the human hero.
Perhaps this is the role Burton had eyed Danny Devito for and is now
considering Paul Reubens? Both Devito and Reubens have done 2 films each
with Burton (has Pee Wee been in anything since his cameo in Burton's
"Batman Returns"?). Burton's eccentric casting habits often work out (check
out "Ed Wood") so I guess we'll just have to go with him on this. Poor
Richard Zanuck!
THE TITLE: Yes, more and more the "Apes" film is being referred to as "The
Visitor". If it's a covert title it's not doing a very good job, since
everyone knows what it refers to. Perhaps they called the script that to
throw bootleggers off the trail, and the name stuck. I doubt they will
forsake the solid gold title "Planet of the Apes", nor will they cheapen it
with a combo ("Planet of the Apes: The Visitor"); that would sound like a
knockoff. Fox has the right to use the original title and when the dust
settles I believe it will be called simply "Planet of the Apes".
MODEL REISSUES: Polar Lights is reissueing the '70's Addar POTA model kits
as Aurora kits exclusively at Toys R Us. Today I found the Cornelius one and
at $10 they are a bargain. Supposedly Ursus is also due this month, with
Zira and Zauis in October. Go get 'em!
