|
.html From Cinescape Online:
Roth Goes 'Apes'
After a week or two of speculation it appears that British actor Tim Roth
(Resevoir Dogs) has signed on to the Tim Burton remake of Planet of the
Apes, says Hollywood Reporter this morning.
Rumor had Roth considered for major roles in both Apes and the still-casting
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the latter helmed by Chris
Columbus. Although the rumors concerning Roth and Potter were never
officially confirmed it seems a moot point as scheduling conflicts would
make Roth's appearance in both films highly unlikely. Variety's Michael
Fleming last week reported that Roth's role would be that of "the prime
primate who enslaves [Mark] Wahlberg's character."
Paul Giamatti is also set to join the Apes project, ready to take on the
part of "Limbo," a slave-trading ape who sympathizes with the humans'
plight.
Directed by Tim Burton, shooting from a script by William Boyles, Jr.,
filming is set to begin this fall with a targeted release date of July 4,
2000. Rick Baker, who worked with Burton transforming Martin Landau into
Bela Lugosi for the film Ed Wood, will be providing special effects makeup.

.htmlI'm on the digest, so I don't know if this has been posted yet or not.
Army Archerd's column today includes this info:
Michael Clarke Duncan, who was nominated for a supporting actor Oscar
for his performance in "The Green Mile" will costar in 20th's new
"Planet of the Apes" remake.
Duncan plays one of the good guys (excuse it, apes) to their
villainous leader, Tim Roth. The film, produced by Richard Zanuck and
directed by Tim Burton, starts filming Oct. 23, with "planet"
locations in Hawaii as well as the desert.

I hated those Adventure Comics one's too. If you can get the first 30 issues
of marvels Planet of the Apes magazine, they adapted all the movies. The
Battle Adaptation is intersting because it's done from the less child
friendly original script. The only thing that stunk was the art on the POTA
adapatation. They used this guy George Tuska, who stunk! <.html

I'm really unhappy with the entire idea of an Apes remake. The only idea I
like is Rick Baker doing the effects. He and Michael Westmore (all the Star
Treks) are about the two best in Hollywood and Tom Burman isn't a skank in
that dept either! <.html

Wow!
Excellent actor! And one excellent voice!
I hope he plays a gorilla, he would be perfect for such a role.
He's got that Ursus type voice!

How about some interaction here? Whose in favor of the remake? Whose against?
Put me down for undecided. I think the original is perfect and should never
be touched. <.html

I'm in favor the remake. What have we to lose? If it's good, that makes
just one more good flick. If it sucks, well so be it ... at the least, we
may get some good action dollys. :)

How ever this remake turns out, it will never effect the originals.
So as an ape fan, I welcome it.
I'm sure you don't like the idea, but I'm also sure you will pay to see it.
So just sit back and enjoy it.

them to order. I bought an "Ursus" from him about three years ago ( it was
considerably cheaper than the current price) way before the Hasbro 12 inch line.
For a custom effort, it's pretty good. i had intended to buy more until I heard
about the Hasbro figures were being released. And I think we've all covered the
subject of disappointment w/ the line on the group a few times over. Too bad
Medicom aren't doing a 12 inch line...not that anyone could afford them.

How can a writer's strike effect a script that has already been written and
copywrited by 20th Century Fox?

I'm at a loss. But the paper mentioned that Zanuck is struggling to get three
films before the cameras before the strike hits. Perhaps other guilds will
support a writers strike and strike as well? Prinicpal photography for Apes
won't start until October. I am very skeptical of the film being 'teen
friendly' and am annoyed at that phrase. Don't adults and older adults go to
the movies? I'm watching the development of this film with keen intrest and
just because it's an Apes film, if I think it's gonna bite, I'll wait till it
comes out on tape and pay 2$ rather than waste 8$. The original film is only
32 years old, I still don't see a need to remake it. <.html

this remake finally finished, for better or worse. I remember the
1st time I read about one of the original remake rumor ( yes the

either can I. I'm still real leary about the cast probably cause I
was spoiled w/ the original cast- Chuck & Co. I'm sure it won't be
that much of an embarrassment and maybe we'll all be surprised.
Looks like the "new" apes will lok a lot like the ones from the
Island of Dr. Morrow (sp.) w/ Val Kilmer and the Fat Man. Much less
make up than the original, which is another reason it was so good (
as long as they didn't show the "half ass make up job" on some of
them).
In all I want the remake, as long as we don't see the apes in

Well, I see your reason as there are those on the e-group who like yourself
feel the same way. But I on the other hand am an ape fan as yourself and
everyone else on this e-group, and the truth is I have spent $8 on movies
that I have hated when leaving the theatre. So if I spend $8 on a film that
I am a fan of, it won't be so bad if the film isn't great, for at least
this film will contain a subject matter that I have been a fan of all my
life.
For God knows that watching a movie on a video tape, is nothing compared as
seeing it on the big screen. Good or Bad.
So I will be there opening night.
But just remember one thing, that if this film turns out be less than great,
perhaps a sequal won't be, but if no one bothers to watch it, there will be
no sequal.
And so the headlines will read:
Planet of the Apes died with Arthur P. Jacobs.
And I as a fan will not let that happen.

Ruined the first "Batman" film -- guild called a strike the summer '88 just
beforefilming began in England. WB ordered screenwriter Sam Hamm to London
but Hamm honored the strike, which was why his script was mangled to shit.
Third act was still iffy, Hamm was supposed to kick it in the ass while
cameras were rolling because they were more than a month behind before they
began. Rewrites were done by Warren Skaaran and a former Monty Python writer
(played the Lime character in "Brazil") instead of Hamm, whole thing fell
apart. Out of control.
Sometimes when a bigger-budget film's finally greenlighted the script still
needs tweaking. You need somebody good, really good, for daily rewrites and
a strike severely narrows the field for a production needing a kick in the
ass.
Two quick tangents:
In defense of Hamm's "POTA" script -- he was handed a treatment and told to
write the script from it. Most plot points already were there. He was
married to elements the producers wanted, specifically the ending. (With the
first "Batman" script he was given a much broader latitude, all the suits
required was the Bat, Robin and the Joker along with a sequence with Batman
on a horse! .....seemed they liked the part in Frank Miller's "Dark Knight
Returns" comic with horses. For those who've read the original "Batman"
script, you know Robin is totally shoe-horned into the ending but the horse
sequence is sort of clever. Have a feeling Hamm would've done better on the
"POTA" project without a severely detailed treatment. Also think he would've
cracked the third act of "Batman" had there not been a strike, or at least
the film would've been better in lots of ways.)
Secondly, success of the first "Batman" movie was due almost entirely to a
bizarre wave of hype, not on the (dubious) strengths of the film. During
summer of '88 the Adam West "Batman" television show aired in Britain for the
first time and was a serious hit. Limeys thought it was hysterical, big
ratings and cult popularity just like in the states during the '60s. Word
leaked a feature was underway at Elstree or Pinewood or wherever they hell it
was rolling and anticipation became high. The Brit popularity spread across
the Atlantic like Beatle-mania, the wave of hype the film rode in one was
unprecedented. Bottom line was it didn't have to be good, just had to show
up. (Second two enjoyed descending waves of hype, last one was hypeless and
hopeless.) Ad Week magazine did an autopsy on the phenom about a year or so
later.
The point? If I were Zanuck, the "POTA" films and teevee series would be
running nonstop on Limey television this fall. Ya never know. <.html

Not me! I don't want to see a remake at all. What I'd like to see is some
original films being made instead. Everything seems to be "a remake of" or
"a live action version of" or "the movie of the tv series" these days.

"Limeys" certainly find it hysterical, and indeed there was a lot of hype,
but the old Batman series had been seen many times in Britain long before

Damn straight, my British cousin (sorry for the "Limey" crack, by the way;
we're fast and loose over here in the colonies....).
The hoax pitch posted on the CA site attributed to Cameron (i.e. tweaking
the first 10 minutes of "POTA" with Chuck and co. treking into a CGI jungle
instead of desert....modern ape city....time travelers, temporal
paradoxes....Taylor "alive" and showing up at the end as the 75-year-old
progenitor of intelligent humans/president of NRA) sounded much cooler than
"fairy tales", "princesses" and Tim Burton in general.
Dumping the first five films is a mistake in my book. A seriously good film
would cull a compelling narrative with nods to previous continuity instead of
chucking it all (so to speak) for yet another bloated Burton conceit. (Tim,
if you're still on the list, next time instead of ruining a decent script
just walk out to Melrose Ave and wank publicly, capice?)
Only good thing to say right now is the apes casting, if it's legit, sounds
inspired. Expecting nothing from the film so it won't disappoint. Probably
won't. <.html

Funnily enough - as much as I hate the idea of a remake I've always said
that if they are dead set on making it, Tim Burton would be one of the few
people I'd trust to do something interesting with it. James Cameron I could

Endlessly fascinating at times, especially when they're able to figure out
sociological and economic reasons behind the popularity or failure of

they had a turkey on their hands, box office ended up proving differently for
reasons that had nothing to do with the quality of the film.)

I thought that at first, but when you consider that there's going to be
19 of them, the size becomes acceptable. I have no room for 19 12"
figures. Plus, you can use the Addar bases in your displays. Mira:

.html August 2, 2000... Well, mark this one as a strange scoop -- although one
not entirely outside the realm of possibility. According to our latest
scooper (who heard this from Morning Movie beat's movie reporter Ralph
Garman on Los Angeles' 106.7 KROQ), Johnny Depp has come in and done
several make-up tests for Tim Burton, and is now the one rumored to
portray a Cornelius-like chimp in the Apes remake. "Ralph Garman is
usually very accurate in his reporting," adds our scooper. "He reported
Mark Wahlberg AND Gary Oldman's involvement before anything was
announced. He's been following the Ape project for some time now, and
has been accurate every time."
What sets the warning light off for us is that, last we heard, Depp was
in Prague filming the Hughes' brothers From Hell picture, so it's kinda
hard to be in L.A. for makeup tests and also across the world filming
another picture. That said, it isn't entirely outside the realm of
feasibility -- although it would have to mean Depp isn't filming scenes
right now in Prague. Anyone else out there with a little more inside
access to either one of these shows could help sort this mess out, if
they were willing to oblige.
The scooper also says Paul Reubens, who had earlier been linked to the
Cornelius-like role and had completed make-up tests, would not be
starring in the film. "Whether or not it was his decision, or Burton's,
I do not know," writes the scooper. <.html

Yeah, most likely it may be.
But it does bare a great likeness to Heston's Ship.
And bit too much of an old Stelf fashion for Star Wars.
I hope that it is, for it does look pretty awesome.

Wow! Sounds great.
I hope that it's make in the tradition of King's Quest.
I love those adventure type games.
I would also love to see a planet of the apes chess game for PC, like they
did for star wars.
Apes vs. Mendez.
Ursus: King Piece
Zauis: Queen Piece
Mendez: King Piece
Alpha-Omega Bomb: Queen Piece
And so on.
Now that would really rock!

Well, what I need to do now is finish off the last three films, Escape,
Conquest ands Battle. As for deleted scenes there really isn't any left, sad
to say.
The only released scenes that were ever deleted was from Battle for the
Planet of the Apes. The rest of the films are the same compared to my
Japanese Laser Disc Set.
That is of course if any special scenes may be released on the DVD version,
I'll have to see what will be the final cut on those.
But right now I'm about to get hooked up with a ISDN high speed modem access
for the internet, it will be a huge boost for me once the new release comes
along and I have to upload huge MPEG files covering the new release.
Interviews, trailers, commercials, specials and so on.
So what you see now on the site, I asure you, you haven't seen anything yet.
So stay tuned ape fans, same ape time, same ape channel. (Batman Spoof) :o)

.htmlHey, I'm back in town. Here's my thoughts on recent e-mails...
Alex, you're website is incredible. From now on it's going to be my first
stop.
The Adventure comic books were often wretched, sometimes alot of fun, but
for me back in the early '90's they were an event. There was nothing "Planet
of the Apes" around, a video rerelease of the films and the first rumors of
a new movie (which sounded like a quicky knockoff). There wasn't even a fan
community like there is now. So I have fond memories of those comics,
perhaps more than fans today would understand. I wasn't even a comics reader
but they inspired me to read the old Marvel "Apes" stuff for the first time.
Likewise, this new movie is an event for me and even if I get a bad
feeling about it, I will probably be there opening day. If it sucks, at
least I will know from firsthand experience and not just assume it does ( I
often miss out on a good movie and catch up to it on video, wishing I had
seen it in a theatre). At the moment I'm pleased with the casting even
though I'm not very familiar with them. It seems to me they are casting
accomplished actors, not stunt casting (and the accompaning high salaries).
They have good actors and are spending the money on the movie, not the
bullshit. I don't like the cating synopsis I read and that the trades
apparently are using (the princess, the comic relief slave trader, etc.) but
it's possible that's a smoke screen. All I know is that people who've read
the script really like it.
I remember seeing that "star ship" somewhere else, I think it IS an
"Episode II" ship. Reportedly the main character is a pilot, not an
astronaut, whatever that means. Yes, the guy who first tried to do a new
"Apes" (Adam Rifkin) and the guy who did the recent comics (Charles
Marshall) are different guys. I've read Rifkin's script and could easily
have been one of Marshall's comics; I just thank God it wasn't a movie. My
favorite choice for an "Apes" director would have been Oliver Stone. James
Cameron would have been good but I think his ego was too pumped up from
"Titanic". At least Burton has had some recent humbling ("Mars Attacks");
perhaps he will serve the piece.
Yes, Zanuck's remark that there is "no part for Heston" seems to have hit
a nerve. It seems like they are going to extreme lengths to separate
themselves from the originals and avoid comparisons. Ironically, Zanuck was
the one who had to plead with Heston to be in "Beneath". With all the
skepticism do we really want new actors portraying beloved characters like
Zira or Nova? Remember, one of the hallmarks of the original films was that
time kept moving and no characters were in all of them. "Planet of the Apes"
is about a concept, not a set of characters. I'm more concerned that Burton
will abandon the mind - bending science fiction surprises that "Apes"
excelled at. I think it was actually BURTON who was inspired by Dr. Seuss!
I got to see the new "Apes" game at E3. It seemed to follow the original
film but BIGGER. I was more impressed by the settings than the characters.
However, it's not like "Star Wars" were fans can pick and choose which game
title to play. If you want an "Apes" computer game, this is all there is.
Best, Jeff Krueger

Soldier Ape 1: Standard ape rifle
Soldier Ape 2: Different head sculpt, machine gun rifle seen in Beneath
Soldier Ape 3: Same mold as SA 1, face painted brown, stupid silver M on
chest, as seen only in the TV series.
They're also doing Ursus, Urko, and Aldo, all very accurae to their

'Apes' Make-Up Hints?
Though it's still a bit vague, there's been some bit of information on how
different the apes make-up will be in Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes than
from the 1968 original. In a New York Times article about make up maestro
Rick Baker, info on the new apes is provided. The Times describes models of
Baker's apes that are in his studio. They are described as being
"musclebound" and looking more like something out of Conan the Barbarian
than John Chamber's classic interpretations.
I personally think Baker has tons of ape models in his studio, and that
these may not even be from the remake.

Oooh, good point. If "The Visitor" or whatever they're calling it this week
isn't a continuation of the original films, we certainly don't need a
straight remake. Might as well "reimagine" the concept, only other way to go.
Whether it sucks or not, is there a fourth option after considering a sequel,

Well, I do know of two extented scenes:
1>Aldo and Ceasar in the final tree conflict.
2>Aldo chasing the teacher at the beginning of the film.
And if I'm not mistaken, the intro of the film when Aldo rides into ape

Omega bomb (the bomb was eliminated from the regular cut, Aldo on top of the
bus rallying his troops and many miscellaneous lines and exchanges of
dialogue. One of Kolp's men is called Sergent York, who isn't referred to in
the original cut. Also there's several shots of the mutants falling to the
ground emphazing their radiation sickness, including when they are marching
to Ape City. Perhaps they took it out of the other version because it made
the mutants less menacing. But I found it added some reality to the movie,
that they can't just go through a nuclear war and be hunky dory. Does the
added stuff make it a better movie? Maybe slightly, but it's the weakest
sequel. Why won't Fox include this cut in their much hyped DVDs? And how
about finally releasing J. Lee Thompson's original cut of "Conquest", and
anamorphic versions of all the movies! That's what DVD is for. Why do the
Japanese get the best stuff, toys and otherwise? I'm depressed. - - - Jeff

despite the fact that humans are a variety of ape, their arms are too
short, legs too long, faces are flat, and regarding muscle-bound - well
a chimpanzee is typically seven to eight times stronger than a human of
the same height/weight/build. That's what made me laugh so much about
the portrayal of the apes both in the films and the TV series (a laugh
anyway), they'd be able to hold off a human no problem. And they are
very boisterous players.
Enough rambling

.html Over the years there have been many rumors and rumblings of the
missing prologue sequence from Escape featuring the three Ape-o-nauts
inside Taylors ship.
I know the sequence was scripted, I know the sets were built but does
anyone have any concrete evidence that any part of it was ever filmed?
I thought I'd laid this ghost to rest but the case was "re-opened"
when I read an interview with Kim Hunter in which She says she
"Thinks" she remembered filming the scenes. Furthermore the
interviewer says that he had seen a photo of the three apes at the
controls of the ship.
Has anyone else seen any photos like this?
I personally suspect that Kim Hunters memory is confused and that the
interviewer actually remembers panels from Marvels comic adaption
although I would be thrilled if any of you could prove me wrong. <.html

Hi, Ape friends!
Kim Hunter send a letter tome (August 24, 1999) about this question:
"I do remember that someof the bits we shot indsidethe spaceship never made
the completed film".

Sure, in both Eric Greene's book and teh recent trading card set. It was
indeed filmed. <.html

I'll try to rescan these at some point, but here are two webcam grabs
showing the scene (sorry for the crap quality):
http://www.geocities.com/terminallunch/escape1.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/terminallunch/escape2.jpg
The first is from Greene's book, and he features at least one shot from
every film that's not in the film, I think. The second is from the card
set, which features scenes cut from Taylor's chase (hiding in the water
surrounding Ape Cityt, crouching behind the Lawgiver statue), a test
shot of teh human/ape child from Beneath, the shot included here, and
Breck lying next to a pile of dead, bloody humans from Conquest. <.html

The difference between both versions is 10 min.
U.S. version is 86 min.
Japanese version is 96 min.
So while there are many scenes, there really isn't that many.
But I'll take a look.

shot, I was never sure until today.
Another myth that crops up from time to time is that there was a
British version of the movie that contained the prologue... That one,
I can assure you all is nonsense.

Yeah, that is the big problem.
Niether the deleted scenes of Escape nor Conquest were never released on
any POTA version world wide.
So it would be imposible to ever see them, the last hope was DVD, but I
doubt very much that it would be there.
What a major let down by 20th Century Fox. :-(

Phil.
I've just finished placing two more scenes of Battle in
the deleted scenes section.
These are the extended scenes.
If you come across any others let me know, I'm pretty I've
now covered them all. But if you find any, just
through me a few quotes and I'll look them up.

I really didn't have in mind the original, tiny,
come-in-the-plastic-bubble-from-the-vending-machine ones. Hasn't anyone made
any type of new, after-market apes stickers or premium items?
If I wait for the new movie, the apes will be different. I'm sure Tim Burton
is going to have the standard Taco Bell tie-in promotion, though. Buy a
burrito, get a collectible Ullyses plastic tumbler..... <.html

.html greetings,
I was reading thru the POTA archives last night and came across a
very nicely done website and the URL escapes me at the moment. It had
Cornelius reading the "Beware the beast man..." as intro text and a
wav file and had a lot of cool multimedia stuff. Anyone know the URL
offhand? Also anyone who know of any great POTA websites, I'd love to
know the addresses. I've seen most of the more popular ones that come
up in title searches.
thanks! <.html

My feeling is Mr Burton is (a la Mars Attacks) send up the whole genre
of men-in makeup films. I just get the feeling that there is going to be
more than a little comedy in the film.
Either that or it's going to be a very /*very*/ dark film.
