Would this be a good time to point out that Zira isn't in the remake? If she
were, Helena Bonham Carter would be a perfect choice. Que lastima.

Picked up a bunch of interesting stills this weekend - some I've never even
seen before. I'll post scans as time permits.

I agree, Whoopi Goldberg has no business in this movie! She is a low-class
has- been whose career has been reduced to little more than regurgitating
lame cracks as she fills her regular chair on Hollywood Squares.

Tim Burton needs to quit trying so hard to be "different", it's coming across
as more than a little bit desperate.

Phil: The only time I've ever heard of Felicity Kendal was as a

Young Ones. Care to enlighten the Yanks?

Glad to Phil...

Felicity Kendal was popular on British TV for her role in the BBC
comedy show "The Good Life" She was widely regarded as a "Bit of
upper class crumpet" or "The thinking mans totty" which roughly
equates as to being ugly.

If memory serves once had the "Honor" of winning the British "rear of
the year" award.(Which involves that years "hot" actress poking her
butt at the photographers and smiling in embarrassment while they
take photos of it)

Personally I never understood what all the fuss was about... If they made
"Planet on the moose featured thespians" Maybe she'd get my vote.

Enlightening Yanks on ms Kendal,

The Good Life (also starring Richard Briers) late 70s early 80's Sitcom,
BBC. Has appeared in a few Python Spinoff things.

Also did 'Solo', later 80's if memory serves.

Apparently some brits think she'd make a good Zira (ahem), but I think
we are in for a very different sort of film to the one some of us were
expecting....

Hey, he's a moody misunderstood GENIUS. Dresses in black, can't complete a
sentence and everything. Leave him alone and let him destroy "POTA"....so
long as it's in theatres tomorrow.

Destroy POTA?
Did the sucky remake of PSYCHO distroy the original?
Of course not. So where do you get this logic from?

You can't distroy something that has already made it's mark in history.
Unless of course you have a time machine.

I like some of Burton's films and others I think are painfully
mediocre. While at first it does sound like a mismatch, Burton could
bring a surrealistic edge that could work quite brilliantly.

As for casting Wahlberg and other youngsters in the lead, blech. I
mean it could work and work well perhaps, but it's just such a easy
way to go to drum up $. An older lead would be much more realistic.

Still though, I'll try to keep an open mind.

If it turns out to be less than hoped for, it'll just make the original that
much more of a classic.

Burton's a good choice.
Better than Olie Stone and some of the hacks that were slated.
Now if they wanted a great choice the should have gotton Terry Gilliam!

I have those scripts, but they're not using either. Guy named William
Broyles is writing (has written) the script for the film.

The orangutans were symbolic of the French.

Hi Guys,

I'm not normally one to impose on anybody but as one ape fan to
another I'd like to ask a favour.

I've just bought myself a new VCR that can play both UK and USA tapes
soooo... Is there anybody out there who has the John Chambers tribute
who can run me off a copy? Of course I'd pay for the tape and postage
etc.

If there's anything anyone wants from the UK (Whether you can help
with the tape or not) I'd be glad to try and help.

There was one up for bids on e-bay.
I was thinking about getting it to make multimedia clips for my site, but
the auction ended just moments before I got out of work.

Now Alex, would I ever do something like that? ;-)

Speaking of BATTLE, someone posted the other day about whether or not the
extra 10 minutes makes it a better film. I have to say yes, because it
includes a major subplot (the Alpha-Omega bomb) which puts a whole
different spin on the outcome of the battle in as much as the audience
would be 'concerned' (as much as you would be watching a film) about what
happened. Yes, you want the Apes to win, but then what happens? The world
gets destroyed again? So of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't"
situation that always makes storytelling a bit more interesting.

I also thing the extended scenes help flesh out the story a bit more and
add tension in certain places, especially the scene where Caesar is
stalking Aldo through the trees. The final confrontation happens too fast
in the edited version. The other way, you get a bit more caught up in
what's going on. In a strange sort of way you can almost feel sorry for
Aldo in those last few moments. From his point of view he's totally
fu*ked- the entire Ape society has turned on him (and deservedly so for
what he did) and he pretty much knows what's going to happen. Like most
bullies (for lack of a better term) he acts one way when he's terrorizing
those weaker than him, or when he has the gorillas to back him up. But
when he's left on his own it's a whole different story.

The one scene in the forbidden city where Caesar and Virgil realize that
it's inhabited is pretty cool too. For those of you who've never seen it,
they both "smell" the humans but comment how "they're not like the humans
in our city" (or something to that effect). Yes, the audience knows that
the city is inhabited, but Caesar, Virgil and MacDonald don't. At that
moment in the film they realize they're not alone, and that builds a bit
of tension for the viewer.

I may be in the minority among Apes fans, but I really like BATTLE.
Probably my favorite after BENEATH and PLANET.

Preach it, brother! Something about Battle keeps me coming back. I know
it's a mess from a continuity standpoint. I know it would have been
better if they weren't wearing clothes from 2000 years in the future
(always thought some kind of evolution/augmentation of their slave
outfits TOWARD the classic costumes would have made more sense). I know
that hasty recasting made for an interesting story ("The black man is
the brother of my predecessor's personal assistant." Whew.). But
something about it being the final film, and never airing on Channel 7
in NY during the 4:30 movie Ape Week, made it really fun to watch as a
kid. Now, I love that ambiguous crying statue. Think about it. Who the
hell let them end with a crying statue??? That took balls. Vive la
Guerre por La Planete de Singe!!!

I couldn't have put it better myself.
These deleted scenes really do make the story much better.
I still can't believe that 20th century fox won't release these scenes on
DVD.
I'm pretty sure that if Arthur P. would have still been around, these DVDs
would have been ten times better.

Talking about DVD, I'm getting my box set by no later than friday.
I can't wait! I'm going to be in ape digital heaven this weekend.

On-Screen Monkey Business Causes A Stir

The planned sex scene between Helena Bonham Carter and Mark Wahlberg in
Visitor, The (2001) is already causing a stir in Hollywood. Bonham
Carter, 33, is undergoing a daily six-hour make-up session to play an
ape in Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes (2000), while Wahlberg,
28, is playing the astronaut role first made famous by Charlton Heston.
An insider says, "Helena's character becomes Mark's love interest. And
Burton thinks their relationship should evolve into love-making. " But
Hollywood executives are not enthusiastic about the planned scene. The
insider adds, "The studio guys think it's too weird and unnatural. They
think audiences will recoil. I think Tim is in for a major battle."

I also noticed that Corona, despite dismissing the Visitor as a code
title, is now listing the film as "The Visitor (inspired by 1968's
Planet of the Apes film)".

It'll make sense in the sequel. Wahlberg's on for two, isn't he?

Hopefully Shumacher will come on board and take over for Burton in the

I believe that's more hype than anything else.
Because if Wahlberg bangs a monkey, who going to bang Estella Warren?
Dr. Zaius?

Why then even cast fashion model Estalla Warren as the human female?
So it just goes to show, don't believe everything you hear.

I'm getting aggravated by the bits of plot leaked so far. A damn shame,
because this sounds like a killer cast. And Burton's got his problems, but
he can pull a good movie out of his ass when he wants to. Pass or fail here
depends on the script alone.

I came across some great POTA stills this weekend, one or two that I've

Hey! I for one am glad to see a Sci-Fi flick that deals with adult subject
matter.
I'm sick of the way the Ewok Factor has permeated the Star Wars series. And
You know Lucas only does it to sell toys and line his pocket! Though Apes
has certainly had it's share of merchandising, The storylines have always
dealt with more serious stuff, and you never knew who would make it to the
next film. I for one, would have found it much more interesting if Leia or
one of the young Skywalkers died instead of an old Jedi master and took a
whole planet with them. Preferably the with all those damn Ewoks on it!

I'm thinking of doing the same once I get this DVD set, from what I

So I'm hoping for some great exclusive stuff here to share with those who

For anyone who dosn't have DVD yet, you've got to get this!
Or a least get yourself the box set for the day you do get one.

"Religious hipocrytes" is non-denominational, they exist everywhere. Bashing
no one in particular, thanks. ("Taking a stand for something you believe in"

Should interspecies sex scenes be included in the new "POTA" film, expect the
same knee-jerk reactions as were seen in repsonse to "Howard the Duck", "Last

non-issue controversy -- grabs them headlines in print and face time on

non-issue controversies, preferably "fish-in-a-barrel" types like violent or

Often wondered whether Lucas' claim of "originally" having wanted the final

Was he backpedalling, lifted the idea from some crap fan fic to save face

Bad as they were, at least the last three "POTA" films required no

I don't proscribe or prescribe behaviour, and ultimately, people do
    choose what
they want to do. Modern society allows this. There are always minorities that
like to think themselves 'Chief defenders of the Faith.' It is a film, that's
true. The issue not whether it can happen (it already has, I'm afraid) but
whether a film is the place where a great many people may have to watch bits
they'd prefer not to. The choice of watching a film is always whether to watch
it all or none. Why spoil the whole film for one (probably suggested) scene?
It's like poster ads - they get put everywhere, and they are there without
choice - money puts them there. Cultural decay is caused by a collective
lowering of morals (whatever they are). We don't have culture anymore
    anyway -
you look the definition of culture up.

Someone at work commented that the world is going like the Roman Empire
    - we are
headed for a decline. He's just waiting for the goths or the Vandals to appear
over the horizon. When you see what the sicker aspects of society show for
themselves from time to time - and the way it becomes more mainstream
    all the
time, he may well be right.

    All human life is here......

Maybe he'll have to save that one for the directors cut on the DVD. I
hope not. It is the year 2000 after all. Hell, in the book they didn't even
kiss! But this isn't the 60's In the 60's Heston had to explain that his

destroying the world to get 'Goddamn' past the censors. Would you have
wanted him to say "DING DANG Y'ALL. DING DANG Y'ALL TA HECK!" I don't want
    some watered down version.

I don't see what the big deal is. They have inter -- special sex on Star
Trek all the time and that's television! And that's not just in the last few
years. Captain Kirk slept with every green gal in the galaxy! I tell ya,
some of those Klingon broads look a step down on the evolutionary ladder from
a cavewoman, much less an intelligent lady ape. And no one bats an eye at
all the sleeping around on Voyager. Cmmndr. Chipolte' had Tadpole-Sex with
    Capt. Janeway in prime-time.

Some unenlightened people were far more offended when Capt. Kirk kissed
Uhura than some green sex creature from another world. The racial issue was
a big point in the original films. Perhaps Marky's character needs a little
pillow talk, and is willing to trade a little in the looks department for a
little more personality. Maybe he's forced into it. We don't have the

Hear, hear Michael, this is getting a tad tedious.

The inclusion of the Marky/Helena Bonham Carter love story may in the
sequels lead to the introduction of AIDS when Marky returns back in time to
the 1970s. Consequentely most of human society, well in the USA at least,
as of course 'Planet' has always meant America, will be wiped out, leaving
the apes to take over ! The apes were of course introduced as household
pets not because of some other disease destroying the cat and dog population

Hi Trisha, welcome to the group.

I agree 100%. Just be thankful you don't live in the UK. It's a
    thousand times worse over here.

It's not that I'm offended, I just find the notion of a Human wanting
to do the deed with an Ape ridiculous... Taylor kissing Zira was
touching... If there'd been tongues involved it would have grossed me
    out!

So It's not that I'm offended, IT just strikes me as a phenomenally
stupid thing to do. Being outrageous for the sake of being
outrageous. Surely no-one is going to take the movie seriously if
    such a scene is included.

I don't think anyone here said they'd be offended, (and I agree with you
that it's a stupid idea) - the comment was that the standard
conservative groups would be up in arms about on-screen bestiality,
giving the film the worst kind of publicity.

If these were ordinary apes I'd agree with you. However, I don't find it
any more ridiculous than doing the deed with Nova. She had the mind of an
animal, though I must admit, as far as her body went, she was a superior
being. This takes me back to the Star Trek thing yet again, where
inter-species romances is the norm. Spock is a perfect example, half human
half Vulcan. Perhaps you find it ridiculous from a genetic standpoint.

This takes me back to the fact that these are not regular apes. They are
more like evolved intelligent cavemen. If you find that ridiculous, May I
remind you that that is how the Neanderthal disappeared in the first place.
They didn't die out. They were bread out. In fact, those of you who've see
the make-up tests, will recall that all the way back to Beneath, they had a
hybrid Ape/Human. That was dropped as being to controversial at the time. I
guess some fans prefer to ignore the deeper issues in these films. They'd
rather see apes and humans killing each other, than kissing each other.

      Okay back to ape talk:
I just picked up my DVD box set and I must say, they are mind blowing!!
      The interactive menus are awesome!
I plan to make mpeg clips on the interactive menus of all five films so that all of you will see just how great 20th Century Fox made these DVDs. (don't miss out on this, if you don't have a DVD player, get one! It's worth it.)

All the boxes are all the same as the 30th Anniversary Edition, but Behind the Scenes has a new look as you can see by the image below. All films are the same cut as the video versions
      , but that was expected.

Picture and Sound is at it's best! As all DVDs are.
Planet and Beneath both have Trailers and Photo Galleries, but Escape, Conquest and Battle are only Trailers and Film. With the regular DVD options of course.

Over all a major two thumbs up!!

      Hi--

Just a quick question, out of nothing but my own curiosity:

How many folks here, saw any of the APES films, upon their first
      release?

I have pleasant recollections of--as a toddler--going to PLANET OF THE
APES, late, in its original run.

Remarkably, if I remember correctly, it was the first movie I saw, that
wasn't part of a "kiddie matinee."

Even more remarkably, APES was featured as part of a double bill, with
      Hammer's ONE MILLION BC.

It was an amazing Saturday afternoon, for a little kid: blasted back
to the prehistoric, and then, LITERALLY, rocketting, into the future!

      Sweet memories...

      Best,

      Jim Burns

Here's an ape joke I picked up this week that's sure to offend a few of you
      out there. So don't read it . . .

      V
      V
      V
      V

Five guys were marooned on a jungle island with no women. Just a female ape
that lived on the other side of the island. Trapped there for a very long
time, one of them said, "That's it! I can't take it any more!" He got up,
grabbed a bag and headed to the other side of the island with the other side
      of the island.

Each of the other four took an arm or a leg, and he put the bag over her head
and got to it. After a while she one by one she got her hands and feet lose
and grab him, pulling him to her harder and harder. He yelled to his fellow
      castaways.
"Get it off! Get it off!"
"We can't get her off you. You're on top!"
"No, the bag! I want to kiss her!"

Battle was the only one I saw in the theatre. I do remember being afraid
of the tv and radio ads for CONQUEST when it was released. It sounded so

Well, I don't know what the latest rumor is, but I did hear on the e-group
that it will be released in the month of November.
And low and behold we now have the trailer of this game on the DVD set.
But no final date is given so we'll just have to see.

I got the racial allegories. Got the anti-nuclear war message. Got the
social satire and the ironic casting of Heston, as well as the forced
busing. But I missed the deeper issue of tapping monkey ass.

Mine still hasn't shown up from Amok Toys. However, an anal-retentive
      friend
pointed out how the Medicom Zaius has the "Planet" costume but a "Beneath"
      headsculpt. Thoughts?

Absolutely true. Although, the outfit was featured in both films.

I know most people (like the package design team at Fox)can't see the
difference between Planet, Beneath, or Escape Zira's makeups, or even the
diff between Cornelius, Caesar or Galen. But that's my cross to bear.

Love the new "Behind teh POTA" DVD cover . . .

You are really making me feel old. I was 18 when POTA first came out. My
favorite sequel was Escape with its tragic romance. I also remember seeing
Battle in a crowded theatre. I remember the entire audience cheering on the
line " Now fight like apes !"

What an odd thing to say?...You mean there are ape fans in Germany,
Russia and Asia who would also rather see Apes and humans killing
      each other?

That's probably true but remember... up is down, left is right and
backwards is straight ahead. A horse can't whinny and a cow can't moo
but the cat will always jump over the moon.

See, you're not the only one who can spout nonsense.
