A couple of questions for you all.

1. Has anybody ever heard of a POTA role playing game with 25mm white
metal miniatures?

2. I recently acquired a screenplay fragment credited to Charles
Eastman titled "Planet of the Apes" The Taylor type lead character is
called "Index O'Toole"

Can anyone throw any light on this version?

Do you think we should? Index O'Toole. Yikes. Is there a date on there?

No date Phil... It's only 25 pages, 1st page reads:

Planet of the Apes
screenplay by
Charlse Eastman
301 Second Street
Hermosa Beach California.

If there's enough interest I'll type it up and perhaps Alex can post
it on his site? What do you say?

Don't do that! 25 pages? Find a scanner with optical character recognition
(OCR - most have it), and scan that thing. Run it through spell check and
you're done.

No one corrected the guy who thought Spleenworld had Medicom Milo on its
front page. That's a full size Apemania mannequin/restoration on display.

Let's see, my first Ape theatrical experience was Escape at the Mid-Island
North, then Conquest at the Garden City Park East, then a twin bill of Battle
& Planet at the New Hyde Park Theatre. Regrettably, I never caught Beneath
in it's 1st release. Planet & One Million makes an interesting double
feature. Linda & Raquel, some combination! Thanks for the trip down memory

Please stop wasting space and stick to apes.

What an odd thing to say?...You mean there are ape fans in Germany,
Russia and Asia who would also rather see Apes and humans killing
each other?

That's probably true but remember... up is down, left is right and
backwards is straight ahead. A horse can't whinny and a cow can't moo
but the cat will always jump over the moon.

See, you're not the only one who can spout nonsense.

The only time I've seen the movies on the big screen was in 1975 when I went to
an "Ape-athon" that started at midnight. They only screened the first four movies
and the only film I hadn't seen at that point was Conquest ( I also hadn't seen
Battle then either .. I got hooked on APES with the first TV airing of "Planet").

I was 12 and went with a friend and his older brother who had wheels. I remember
being SO tired that I kept nodding off by the time Conquest came on. In the
morning we were given bananas and single serve packets of Corn Flakes.
I also vaguely remember a scene in "Planet" that I haven't seen since. When Zira
and Lucius bust Taylor out and are on their way to the forbidden Zone, I'm sure
they were stopped by Gorilla's asking where they were going. You sometimes see a
B&W photo from the scene w/ a gorilla, Zira and Lucius sitting at the front of
the wagon. Anyone else recall a scene like that or was it my half drowsy 12 year
old imagination ?
Best,
KEN

I got to see it twice on the big screen - once at the Virgina Film
Festival in 1991. Bruce Hornsby was sitting behind me. Weird. Some
English professor held a discussion afterward about the "deeper
meanings", patting herself on the back for recognizing the most obvious
satire on display in the film. I got to tell her about Battle, which
she never heard of.

Second screening was at a revival house in Philly a few months ago. A
similar kind of woman/moderator had made herself extremely unpopular by
trying to discuss the films they were showing in this series
(Metropolis, Farenheit 451, Mad Max), every single time blowing the
ending for the entire audience, many of whom hadn't seen the films being
presented. She had learned her lesson by the time Planet of the Apes
rolled around, but was still annoying as hell, giving comments based on
memory, I guess. She mentioned that we should watch for the sun setting
on the wrong side in the last shot. There's no sun in the last shot.

Hey Dave.
Well, if you would be willing to type it up and e-mail it to my hotmail
account on the site, I wouldn't mind posting it.
The problem with scaning it would be that the scaned images would take up to
much space on my server, but a written text wouldn't take any space at all.
Plus I would add a couple of pics to it like I did with your awesome story:
Hideaway at Liberty Beach.

Wow, this is really funny because I saw Phil's reply to your message, before
I saw your original message? (And we're talking about 4 hours apart)
There's something funny going on with my e-mail.
I think I'm being probed by the MENDEZ Gang!
Oy Vay!

Well, anyway, the DVD game trailer as well as the DVD interactive mpeg clips
are now up on the site.
Enjoy the sneak peek guys!

With an OCR scanner, it wouldn't be a scanned image - the scanner
recognizes letters and converts the scan to a text document.

Hi Ken,
I think it's a possibility that some of us older Fans sometimes get
what we saw on the screen as a youngster mixed up with what we've
read or perhaps seen in a comic book adaption. I too have seen the
photos you mention and I think it's fairly widely known that this was
one of the infamous "deleted scenes. The only thing I'm 100% sure
about is that I've never seen it.

My 1st exposure to the Apes was seeing my older brother collect the
movie trading cards (The aftermath of the hunt pix really disturbed
me) Then a James Fransiscus double bill... Beneath + Valley of the
Gwangi. I'd guess I was around 9-10 years old. Once I got home my GI
Joes (We call them Action Man in the UK) were stripped of their
clothing and generally mistreated.

Change of subject... Hands up who's seen the Japanese "Time of the
Apes" If you haven't it's worth seeking out... You'll never be quite
the same afterwards!

If there's enough interest I'll type it up and perhaps Alex can post
it on his site? What do you say?

Hey Dave.
Well, if you would be willing to type it up and e-mail it to my hotmail
account on the site, I wouldn't mind posting it.

I'll get on it a soon as I can... 25 pages won't take long to
re-type. OCR technology is just science fiction for me right now. (I
bet Phil's bedroom looks like the bridge of the Enterprise)

Wow, this is really funny because I saw Phil's reply to your message, before
I saw your original message? (And we're talking about 4 hours apart.
There's something funny going on with my e-mail. I think I'm being
probed by the MENDEZ Gang!

I get the same thing on occasion. Look on the bright side... There's
nothing like a good probe!

So have we drawn a blank with the origin of this Charles Eastman
script? Is it genuine? Does it relate to the original 60's version...
The TV show? The remake?
Someone out there must know.

Thoughts on recent e - mails:

I think the professor commenting on the "backwards sun" in "Planet of the
Apes" was actually referring to "THX-1138" (George Lucas).

"Apes" stickers: I live in the Hollywood area and I know a place that
sells stickers of the 30th anniversary image (Statue of Liberty, Roddy,
bathed in red). There's also a comics shop here that sells a new sticker of
the Mego soldier ape with the Fuct company name.

"Battle For the Planet of the Apes": I personally consider it the weakest
"Apes" film, for some it's a favorite. What's cool is how different the
films are from each other. "Escape" and "Conquest" are more interesting
dramatically (they are my favorites) , while the other two are more visually
dynamic, "Beneath" and "Battle" (the tree houses). Unlike series like "Star
Wars" or "Alien", which are variations on a formula, the "Apes" films cover
a wide variety of styles: sci - fi, war film, chamber drama (no pun
intended), action adventure, urban drama ("Conquest"). Something for
everyone, thus a wide range of favorites. I always felt the "Star Wars" Ewok
battle was a replay of "Battle" (technological society overtaken by
primitives).

The "Apes" sex scene: I doubt it will get that far but I'm relieved that
they are talking about scenes with controversy and ideas. Makes it sound
like they will push the envelope like the originals. Check out the excellent
interview with ex - Fox exec Bill Mechanic in the new issue of "Premiere
magazine. He specifically brings up "Apes" while talking about
screenwriting, saying, "There had been multiple writers on "Planet of the
Apes". But we stopped the baton-handoff process and wiped everything out
that existed. The studio hired a writer of caliber, William Broyles Jr., who
had expressed his passionfor the project. . . Whatever happens to the movie,
it will have artistic integrity". And this from a guy who no longer works
for he studio. What might work is a romance (not necessarily sex) between a
human and an ape. There was some of that in the original novel (read it if
you haven't). It might be more controversial than a "Star Trek" thing
because of the hot button issue of evolution and the hint of beastiality.
Apes exsist and Klingons don't.

A couple of months ago I asked Natalie Trundy to do a e - mail chat with
this group. I'm thinking of doing another one, this time with Bill Blake. Is
there interest in this?

Hopefully not like "Edward Scissorhands". I get the feeling Burton wants
to expand his artistic reach with this and it would be interesting to see
him do a more mature romance. Obviously, it wouldn't be the main focus, so
he could sneak it in and test new themes. - - - Jeff Krueger

Not that Jeff needs a character reference but he's one of the nicest

If he says he'll get you the goods you need have no doubts about

Just one question Jeff (for us Brits) What is a sticker exactly?

Perhaps if the new film concentrate more on the romance then the love
scenes some of these folks will simmer down. Not to flog a dead horse, but
the point I was trying to make was that what's inside is more important than
looks. Don't judge a book by it's cover and all that. Some "people" treat
others like animals, even if they can speak, and think, and reason.

On Lexx, Stan wanted to have it off with a Plant Lady. I'm sure no Sci-fi
fans thought twice about that one.

For you Yong Ones fans . . .

Rik: I suppose you think things like Peace, Equality and Freedom are boring.

Viv: Yes, they are!

Rik: They why isn't Cliff Richards boring clever trousers?

Vivian slaps Rik face to a plate of lentil casserole.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I enjoy movie violence as much as anyone. Like
when Brent waxed Ursus. For those of you who would rather root for the
gorillas here are some alternate endings:

Ursus kills Nova, Brent & Taylor and sets the bomb off himself. Meanwhile,
Zaius kills the chimps and steals the spaceship.

Zaius, traveling back in time, hides out until he's nearly at deaths door,
and then sets off Klob's bomb and destroys the Earth again before the first
bomb (or 2nd bomb depending on how you look at the timeline) can be set off
destroying the Earth.

Get on that one!

All this talk of stickers reminds me of one of the strangest pieces of
PLANET OF THE APES merchandising, ever:

6-inch photo stickers, full body shots, of Zaius, Zira, Cornelius, et.
al.--die-cut (meaning, printed, so that the stickers were removable in
    the given figure's outline/shape)--

But NOT of the movie characters--

    But full-figure photo-stickers--

    Of the MEGO DOLLS!

Released in the early or mid-70s (after whatever year the first
doll-line, debuted), these were available in the large,
    bubblegum/gumball-type vending machines, probably--if memory serves!--at
a quarter a shot... The stickers came, rolled up, in those transluscent
    plastic bubble-container, type of things...

Even odder, was that one of the photo-stickers, featured the MEGO,
    POTA, "generic" astronaut figure!

The stickers may actually have been a bootleg item--

The vending industry in major American cities has not always been
    controlled, by, uh, "unaffiliated" interests--

    But strange, and interesting, nonetheless!

I had these. Star Trek stickers as well. I'm almost positive that the

It seems to me that there are numerous 'cuts' of these films, which I
wonder are pre-release cuts which eventually made their way into
circulation. Maybe they have different viewing categories, for when
during the day they can be shown etc., etc.

What would be nice is to find out from anyone left from the cutting room
floor so to speak, what the unabridged versions really are.

The reason for cards showing cut scenes is that a selection of stills
would have been sent to the print houses to be released with the film.
Trouble was there were (so far as I can gather) a great many last minute
alterations - hence cut scene stills made their way into the collector
cards/stickers. Fox wanted a quick release for the 30th (I wonder why it
wasn't the 25th?) anniversary. Suggests to me that they KNEW there was
going to be a remake on or shortly after the 30th anniversary. The media
machine knows its stuff doesn't it. Plus I can't believe that Fox aren't
    watching this channel.

Maybe with DVD-R coming out soon, us fans can create these unabridged
    versions ourselves.

There were actually two different sets of these vending machine stickers. A
small set of rectangle shaped stickers that featured the first series of
Mego figures and a second, larger die-cut set of the same characters. Yes,
the shot of Cornelius does feature the tunic on backwards. Go figure.
In addition to these, there was a set of 5 "pendant" style necklaces that
featured stickers of just the action figures' heads.
All of the above have shown up on Ebay from time to time.

Couldn't agree with you more Michael, I'd like to have seen the
complete E.G Robinson promotional reel. A wasted opportunity if ever
there was one. Perhaps somewhere down the line Fox are planning a
George Lucas style "Extra special, ultimate, definitive, collectors

I know it's unlikely, but can anyone confirm if the individually

I agree with that, but never the less, we now have a kick ass format on the
ape films. DVD quality picture and sound like never before.
When you see a film in such quality, it's like seeing it for the first time,
because the image and sound is so sharp that more details are noticed in the
    movie.
It's breath taking. And the interactive menus are just an added treat!

I just saw the individually released DVD of POTA in the store yesterday, no luck, same information on the back of the box as the one in my box set.
They only have POTA available on it's own for now, then later the others will be offered, all except for Behind the Scenes of course, which only comes with the box set.

Heard a rumor "POTA" and "Trek" action-figure stickers originally were
promotional give-aways during a '70s Toy Fair tradeshow. Proved so popular
Mego prez Marty A. dumped massive amounts of them through candy brokers
around the country for distribution in gumball machines.

Somehow selling stickers with the images of the figures didn't violate Mego's
licensing agreements with Twentieth and Paramount.

Fun Fact: Supposedly there was a sticker of Sulu in the "Trek" assortment,
even though Mego never produced a Sulu action figure.

You would have noticed a siginificant drop in quality on these scenes.
The Japanese laserdisc print is not in the best condition, was turning
red, etc., while the recent release of Battle was remastered and THX
certified. So, we'd be complaining about that if they did it . . .

I just found an odd tape in my collection. it's (so far - still
looking) special promotional pieces made for exhibitors that condenses
the first half of the flicks. Interesting thing is that the piece
showing POTA is almost entirely built from alternate takes. The missing
scene from Alex's site is included, it's all out of sequence, Taylor's
opening journal entry is longer, he says Dodge's name when he finds him
stuffed (odd, since we don't know his throat is healed at that point),
    etc.

Yeah, I have that scene. (maybe I should add it)
He says it just before the gorilla takes a shot at him.
And I never did think about that, but your right, he would have said that

YEp, that';s shown here as well. Not in the actual film. Another
interesting thing was the mutants' mass music, while having the same

        Say Brian,
Do you have any footage from the 30th Anniversary with Apemania?
Coventions and so on. I just won a 30th Anniversary tribute to John Chambers on e-bay which I plan to use for my site, its has tributes from Roddy Mcdowall along with you guys in ape suits on it.
But I was also wondering if you had anymore VHS Tapes like this.

Just something new I can place on the site.
I remember the E.T. and Access Hollywood coverage on this, but I never got to record it.
I can make a page covering these events with apemania on mpeg clips and Images, along with a link.

Let me know if you have anything else.

Wow, that's a lot of pictures.
I do like the ending ones, very nice.
I want to make a poster page using my archive cards, I'm going to scan them
large with lowist bytes possible. So I'll be throwing those ending pics in
        there with them.

The Medicoms have beautiful sculpt jobs, but all my chimps needed to
have repainted faces. They looked all dirty. Once repainted, they look

Okay, so, for better or worse, I took the plunge and bought an Apemania
Cornelius outfit for this year's Halloween. It arrived last week, and I
wanted to let the list know what a superior job Brian and Co. did with
this piece. I guess we'll start at the top. I don't know the tailoring
          terms, so bear with me.

The Jacket: HEAVY green fabric (cotton? Wool? Canvas? I'm not sure),
expertly tailored, with a kind of satiny interior that covers the entire
inside of the top. Cloth brown undersleeves that look as if I could
fray them appropriately if I dared. Brown leather detailing that is
absolutely perfect. The leather is genuine, and very thick. You realize
that these must have been AWFUL costumes to wear in the desert. The
"glyph" designs on the chest and sleeves seem to be rubber, matched
perfectly to the leather with paint. Nicely hidden zipper up the back.

Pants: Not much to mess up here, but the cut and stitching is exactly as
it is in the film. No shortcuts taken.

Shoes: Forget the pics on the site, which seems to show shoes with a
thumb added - these have individual toes, look almost exactly as they do
in the film. The soles have a Planet of the Apes logo on them. Apemania
included two pairs of green socks, as well.

The costume is so perfect, that I'm now reconsidering wearing it come
Halloween. One spilled drink and I'll have to go hang myself. I'm
thinking of making it a display piece, but who knows. Right now, I'm
just enjoying the craftsmanship. It looks like it came out of the
          film. A completely professional piece.

In summary, if you're a big frigging geek like myself, and you are prone
to such outlandish purchases, look no further. Apemania delivers.
Hard. Plus, it's much cooler than, say, a full size Stormtrooper
          display. Boba Fett, even.

Note to Brian: Have you considered making/offering any of the
          following:

Slave ape jumpsuits (I know they're everywhere on Ebay, but still)?
Mutant outfits (mutant leaders, guards, mass robes and masks)?
Caesar's "Shaft" outfit from the beginning of Conquest (if he was in
hiding, why wear an all-leather Ape City outfit?? You have any
          backstory on that costume?)?
Generic chimps (no chest glyphs and green leather sleeve details)?

Thanks for reading, all, and if you want me to rave about apemania to
          you privately, write and axe.

          Thanx for the review Phil.

As far as your list of other costumes for the APEMANIA artisians to offer,
we are always willing to embrace "special orders", and yours is not the
first to enqire about the Milo, err Caesar, Conquest leather jacket. That
would be an easy one to fill.

The Astronauts, Mutants, and other human outfits would be a bit of a chore
as we would have to assemble some of the orginals from private collections
to make our patterns, and those babies have pretty much been parted out all
          over the globe now.

We have always leaned toward the simian atire, as for us the apes are the
most fun to play. Still, there's always tomorrow, so who knows? If enuff
interest is shown for the human characters' wardrobes, we may add it to the
          catalogue.

Thanx again for the honest review.

          Brian Penikas
Keeper of the Glue and Faith for APEMANIA.COM

PS: The Glyphs on the orginal male Chimpanzee costumes consisted of 2
vac-u-formed plastic "E=MC2" glyphs on the sleeves and either a
vac-u-formed glyph or embossed leather glyph on the chests. We used
rubber glyphs for your costume in particular, because they are direct
castings from original glyph molds. So there's a bit of the original POTA
bloodline in your costume, as a special treat.

The fabrics that we use for the inner-sleeve cuffs is as close a textile to
the original costumes as we can find in todays fashion market. They do have
several colors woven into the fabric. Thank goodness for the retro-trend. A
lot of those great Hippy-Dippy fabrics are coming back.Hard core collectors
would want to fray the edges abit and sew some "pulled" brown yarn up around
the tunic sleeve for added effect an realism.
