may have started muttering, blabbering, whatever. Zaius is notified, he
orders the lobotomy & emasculation. Swears the medical staff to secrecy. Then
Taylor pops up, "Damn Dirty Apes" in the middle of town, and Zaius is on the
spot. Just my thoughts, John. <.html

Zaius knows there's another intelligent human because of the writing on the
ground (literally) in front of the big cage, just after Chuck gets into the
fight and burned on the shoulder. Landon definitely was taken care of
quietly, from what Dodge was wearing the apes knew there were two.....third
one was in plain site and, unfortunately, revealed himself publicly. Which
saved his nads. <.html

Am I remembering wrong, or did one version of the script note the apes'
surprise at Dodge's skin color? Had something to do with him being in
the museum?
Another Greene theory: He notes in his book that in the animated series,
Urko is sometimes written as a Nixon caricature, sometimes very
pointedly, such as a scene where Urko, previously drawn without
eyebrows, suddenly has bushy eyebrows and jowls while exclaiming "Is
there a conspiracy against me?" All the time, I thought it was sloppy
animation, but damn if I'm not going to go and check the tape. <.html

Good point, the politically correct, all-inclusive, diversified,
mutli-whatever climate blinded me. Dodge being black might've been the tell,
also would explain why he was in the museum immediately. Curious specimen
indeed. (NOTE: "Specimen" isn't an Italian astronaut...)

Oh lord, can it be? Wonder whether Urko was popping dilantin, like Trickie
Dick did during the last few years of his presidency. Greene? Our
overzealous "Space Academy" pal might've stumbled onto something. All I
recall from the animated series was that incessant cawing the pterodactyl
kept making. Haunts me to this day. <.html

Checked the tape. No bushy eyebrows in the episode he mentioned. Maybe
he had the title wrong . . . <.html

has anyone purchased the New Terminator2 DVD? "The Ultimate

I just got it yesterday, and I must say that this
is the greatest DVD ever made! This thing takes you right into the heart of
skynet where the robots are made in it's interactive menus, and gives you a TON
of behind the scenes, posters, interviews, japanese movie trailers, exclusive
promo pictures (Hundreds of them).
Even a behind the scenes footage and making on
T2-3D in Universal Studios.
I've never seen anything like this. Oh my God! For
those who made the POTA DVD, Damn you all to hell!!
Oh the shame!
With Terminator 3 entering production, I might
get started on a Terminator Site to run side by side with my POTA remake
site.
I'm getting Terminator Fever!!

| Subject: Dribs and Drabs |
.htmlHi everyone!
Here is my annual (or something like that) e-mail. I've been combing
through the e-mails en masse and I will now expound upon them (someone grab
a shovel!):
First of all, good luck to Mark Gould; I hope everything is OK. But for
anyone else who wants to unsubscribe to this group, I say,"Good riddance,
losers!"
John Chambers tribute: Actually, I just talked with Scott Essman today.
He said the chambers tape has sold more than his other tapes and he's almost
out. He's considering doing another batch, which I agreed was a good idea
since the new movie will only increase interest. Scott footed the bill for
the event, put it together and deserves every thanks. By the way, I make a
cameo in the tape. Early on, they pan around the room. I had been talking to
Roddy McDowell and they caught me just as I was turning around and walking
away. Damn, if they panned a little earlier I would have been captured
talking to Roddy for eternity. I have kind of a dazed look on my face
(actually, I always have that).
I helped Scott out on the tribute, so the next year he was doing a tribute
to the "Wizard of Oz" and wanted to do a birthday cake for John (John didn't
work on the "Wizard of Oz" but the tribute happened to fall near his
birthday again). Scott asked me to design John's cake and I drew an
evolution chart showing apes evolve from primitivity to Oz's flying monkey
to "Planet of the Apes" to today, "today" being John's birthday. I put in 2
Mego figures for a 3D representation of "today". One of the figures got
stolen but it was worth it. There's a picture of the cake in the #16 issue
of "Makeup Artist" magazine. Our own "Apemania" Brian presented the cake to
John.
Scott is also working on some book projects that use his Chambers
material. The tribute coincided with Scott's article about John for
"Cinefex" magazine. I don't have the issue handy, so I forget the #, but it
was a 1997 issue that covered four films, including "Batman and Robin", so
John got short shrift. Scott also covered Rick Baker's work on "Mighty Joe
Young" for "Cinefex" and had hoped to cover "Apes" for them (who better?).
But Scott tells me now they no longer accept work from freelancers. Great
Scott! Thanks to him I got to know John Chambers and even got to reunite him
with Natalie Trundy. I've seen pictures of Halloween '67 when John made
Arthur Jacobs up as Dr. Dolittle and Natalie as Dr. Zira. Yes, ZZIIIRRR- -
AH! Back then, Lisa wasn't even a gleam in Paul Dehn's eye. Natalie was
wearing the brand new Zira costume.
LET'S MAKEUP: Is Baker a better choice than Winston for "Apes", it was
asked? I say YES. Besides Baker's oodles of experience actually doing apes
(Stan Winston did what, "Congo" and "Instinct"?), Baker is a traditionalist
and says he wants to keep it pure like the originals- - - no animatronics.
Winston seems to be in love with technology, like his friend James Cameron.
I'm not knocking Stan Winston; "Jurassic Park", the "Terminators",
"Aliens"...give me a break! But Baker doing "Apes" doesn't just seem like
luck to me, it seems more like divine intervention. Baker has even done all
the major ape remakes: "King Kong", "Mighty Joe Young", even Tarzan (via
"Greystoke"). What's left, "Murders on the Rue Morgue"?
Roddy's TV gloves: sure, it seems cheap but they didn't just do it to save
makeup money. I believe it was done more to accomodate Mr. McDowell, who had
to wear that damn makeup alot in the series. Someone asked if the makeup
could have led to Roddy's death. Well, that was kinda a long time ago so
it'd be hard to trace. He died at 70, that's not such a bad age to reach.
ENGLISH CLASS: It keeps getting brought up how the apes speak English yet
Heston wasn't tipped off about where he was. It's a good point about the
other nationalities in Heston films that all speak English. It's just common
practice. In WW2 movies the Germans speak English, even "Schindler's List".
In the old "Outer Limits" show the aliens always spoke English except the
bug-like "Zanti Misfits", who had an English interpreter (remember that
episode?!! I don't think any story scared me more as a kid than that one).
For me, a good example of creativity in this regard is Oliver Stone's
"Heaven and Earth". The first half of the movie takes place in Vietnam and
though they speak in English, it's understood they are Vietnamese. The
second half takes place in the U.S. and shows the main character struggling
with English. Perhaps the new movie could do something like that, if they
were going to adapt Boulle's novel, say. The apes could speak in English but
it's established it's their own language. Ah, forget it. It's much easier if
everyone speaks English!
"DODGE WAS KILLED IN THE HUNT. WHAT HAPPENED TO LANDON?": Good question.
I've always loved the subtext of the scene where Zira "introduces" Zauis to
"Bright Eyes". She says he's been "prowling around the lab" and he already
obviously knows more than he's letting on. The Landon situation would be a
great thread to hang a story on, a comic book, a short story, whatever. In a
way, Taylor lucked out by his throat being injured. I doubt Landon was so
lucky. ("Hey! What are you doing with that knife? I need those! Hey you
stupid monkeys, a joke's a joke but that's not funny! Hey! Ahhhhh!!!!)
QUEST FOR "CONQUEST": The photo of Breck aiming a gorilla is one of the
cut shots from J. Lee Thompson's bloodier, controversial version of
"Conquest". When Fox gets around to doing a better set of "Apes" DVDs I hope
they will provide the option of either the standard version of "Conquest" or
Thompson's version (if it still exists), and the standard or uncut version
of "Battle". Send those letters to Fox!
I have no doubt that next year Fox will release both the TV and cartoon
series of "Apes". The Columbia House gig is by subscription and they use
shows with long runs; 14 episodes probably isn't worth their while.
The DVD of "Terminator 2" sonds great. James Cameron always delivers when
his films come to home video. We could have expected lots of extras if he'd
done "Apes" (Burton, on the other hand, says he doesn't like director's cuts
on video - basically, he says when a movie's done, it's done - and it wasn't
until this year he started doing audio commentaries. But "Apes" fans are
used to getting slighted on home video anyway). "Terminator" always kind of
reminded me of "Apes" with machines instead of apes. And Cameron's ideas for
his "Planet of the Apes" were reportedly Terminatorish.
BITS AND PIECES: I'm glad to hear Booth Colman will give voice to the "Apes"
game. He's one of the nicest people around and has a very distinct voice. He
got his start in radio.
As for talk shows, there's an old book out about Phil Donahue, I think his
autobiography, which has a picture of him in ape makeup (an Orangutan). I
think our Brian will be on the "Donny and Marie" show Monday.
Hey, was there a booklet in the "Apes" DVD set. I heard there was supposed
to be.

I went to fuct.com and ordered their sticker.
Do you know who makes the post cards? Do you know the name/phone number of
the store that sells them? <.html

Where is it at? I spent about ten minutes navigating their
site and never found them. I should say that I felt their site
was poorly organized... and no 'search for product' function
too boot.
Hope you can help. Thanks!

Brian on Donny and Marie, cool, I'll watch for that.
The booklet that came with the DVD was the timeline booklet about 2 or 3
pages long, very nice graphics.

That's one of the reasons why I've always loved Terminator, that on top of
the fact that I've always loved films that delt with the whole destiny
issue, very cool sci-fi concepts. I just hope that the next T film deales
with the war between man and machine in the future. With Cameron's vision in
movie making, it would be a knock out!
If you've never seen Terminator 2 in 3D at Universal Studios, you've got

I agree that their website "suct"! The sticker is under accessories, and it
is just shown in a pile of other stuff, you won't get a good look at one. I
can't say they're the greatest, but sort of fun. You might just want to
contact fuct at their address with any questions, their website is certainly
not a great deal of help.
Does anyone know of any other apes stickers out there available, besides the

Well, I believe no matter what one may read, Cameron will be involved.
Terminator is his baby, and he does need a big hit to follow TITANIC. So I
honestly won't doubt it. He's just holding out for now. Filming won't begin
until next Fall for a July 4th release in 2002.

runner to direct is Ridley Scott, interesting since Cameron did the sequel
to Scott's "Alien".
Also, it's not going to be "Planet of the Apes" vs. "the Matrix", it's
going to be "Planet of the Apes" vs. "Jurassic Park 3" and "The Mummy 2" and
Spielberg"s "A.I.". Add to that the year's "Spiderman", "Harry Potter",
"Lord of the Rings". . . I don't know, does "Matrix" come out next year?. .

There is a photo of the artwork I just loaded up at
this location:
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Boulevard/8147/MVC-028F.JPG
On the front, embroidered, it says "PLANET OF THE
APES" in silver.
They're pretty high quality t-shirts, and it's about the
best artwork I've seen to date. It actually looks a

Yeah, I just saw Cinescape, most likey he's holding out for more controll.
So Ridley Scott, also director of "Gladiator" will most likely take the
spot. Interesting how I have a Gladiator site. Perhaps it was meant to be.

Matrix 2 and 3 are being filmed at the same time and 2 will be released in
the summer of 2001 with 3 being released later in that year. (According to
Rumor)
Jurassic Park 3?

Thanks for posting that. The standard anniversary artwork isn't bad, but I
have to be honest. I'm probably going to alienate some folks here, but
Cornelius isn't one of my favorite characters. I would sooner buy a t-shirt
featuring Doc Z, Ursus, Nova, or many others. I wish they would have picked
a more interesting character to feature so prominently on the anniversary
stuff.
Sorry if I offended any Roddy fans, I don't have anything in particular
against him. He added to the movie, just not my favorite.

The adverts have always been there, they've only just started putting them

They had another t-shirt there when I got this one. It
was white and it had a series of pictures on it (gorilla's,
but no Roddy chimp!). I snoozed and losed... it's not
there anymore and I should have gotten it. Oh well.
Ebay is about the best source for things... I have the
complete set of Marvel magazines, for instance, minus
one, that I'll be running on Ebay for auction soon... and
I've bought/sold a lot of interesting POTA's stuff off of
there.
Any non-Ebay sources for t-shirts from anyone would
be appreciated, though!
Later.

short, it's a double Spielberg whammy that "Apes" must conquer. For the

As for the shirt, that 30th Anniversary logo is getting old. I've seen

I believe Batman was the champ overall that year. I only hope he will do the
same for the Apes. Cinescape is expecting this to be a HUGE Burton hit.
I can't wait to see the previews on this, most likey we'll see our first

.htmlI remember that they wanted an "X Men" commercial for the Super Bowl but
then pulled it. By the way, I finally saw "X Men" today. That was a movie I
had been looking forward to because I like the director and it sounded like
they were going to put some thought into it. But when it came out it got
mixed reviews so I didn't rush to see it. Somehow, the 90 minute running
time scared me off too, like they flubbed something and had to cut stuff
out.
Well, it was pretty much what I expected. Good effects, an attempt to say
something but it felt manufactured. They had the same back breaking schedule
"Apes" will have. "X Men" shot from I think September '99 to early February;
last I heard "Apes" is scheduled for October 23 and will probably try to
finish up a little after the end of the year (Mark Wahlberg has another film
to do in January). Those kinds of schedules are crazy, there's no room for
mistakes, there's no time to finesse things. I guess the difference is
Burton has been through the event film mill before and "X Men"'s Bryan
Singer hadn't. Anyway, I wanted to like "X Men" more than I did and I
haven't heard from anyone who was bowled over by it. Partly, I had trouble
suspending my disbelief. All the different mutations were like something out
of "Star Trek, but supposedly all take place on Earth in a short time. At
least "Apes" sticks to ONE thing, talking apes. I couldn't buy that the
mutants were persecuted. They could just whoop humanity's ass. Maybe if it
was reversed, where regular humans were persecuted and some of the mutants
want to help them, I could buy it more. The production seemed rushed, it
seemed manufactured, but the director and the cast brought a certain flair
to it. A disappointment but worth a 90 minute investment. I just hope "Apes"
doesn't fall in the same trap. - - - Jeff Krueger

Well, it dosen't take much to put a teaser together, all you have to do is
put a picture of an ape on the screen and say, "Get ready to get your ass
kicked on July 4th".

remake has been going on for years and awhile back I had my own idea for an
"Apes" trailer. We see an individual putting on the ape garb but we don't
see their face and assume it's human. The gloves are adjusted, boots put on,
whatever. Presumably the costumes will be different from the original and
won't give anything away. Is it "Gladiator 2", is it the latest Mel Gibson
medieval epic? Then we do a quick pan up to the face and see it's a gorilla.
. . just a few seconds. Then the title "Planet of the Apes" flashes on.
Well?
Yes, "Batman" was the top hit of it's year, as was "Batman Returns".

I only hope they would do something, after all the the Super Bowl is the

I was impressed with your "remake countdown" on your site. "Planet of the
Apes" doesn't really strike me as 4rth of July fare but I assumed it
wouldn't open exactly on the 4rth (in the U.S. , where it will open first,
movies usually open on Friday or sometimes Wednesday). Well, low and behold,
July 4rth falls on a Wednesday next year. It COULD open on July 4rth. If so
I think a good ad ploy would be to play up the Statue of LIberty. Even if
it's not in the new film it's still an "Apes" icon and even young folk are
familiar with it through the 30th Anniversary hype. July 4rth was the day
the Statue of Liberty was presented to the U.S. (like "Planet of the Apes",
it was given to us by the French). Fox, give me a call. I've just figured
out your marketing strategy!- - - Jeff Krueger

Wow! I like that idea. (What a shocker!)
I'll have to think of a good intro leading to the Statue of Liberty.
Perhaps Zaius tied to the rock talking about the forbidden zone or maybe
Taylor giving his speech in the ship. "does man still make war against his
brother?"
The whole idea of Alpha -n- Omega was to create a sort of anti-nuclear war
message. And with the intro of the Statue I can in turn still use it towards
the same effect. So that's cool.
As for the 4rth, I was aware of that but I wasn't going to make the
ajustments until we got closer to the release date. But if the 4rth does
fall on a Wednesday then as you said no ajustments have to be made. Although
I will make the ajustment of leading the countdown to the very minute of the
first showing on the U.S. eastcoast.

Brian is on for aboat 10 to 15 minutes talking about the makeups of Austin
Powers, and a couple of other films, showing how the work is done. Then two
people come out already in full makeup that Brian has been preparing
throughout the show.
So Brian is on for about 10 to 15 minutes with clips of him backstage
through out the show making up these two people.
One is Dr. Zaius (Yeah Baby!) and the other is one from the movie Galaxy
Quest.
So I would advise you to tape the whole show, because they take small clips
from time to time to see how Brian is doing before his appearance on the
show.
Great Show.

I actually agree with you to some extent. As far as Roddy goes, I think
Caesar was a far more interesting character than Cornelius. I also wish
they'd made less of Cornelius on the anniversary artwork and more of an

Thanx Al,
Yeah, one of those all too common "whoopsies"
by the Producers, forgetting to give proper credit where credit is due

Would've been nice to have been acknowledged. My crew and I still

.htmlGreetings to you all.
This is my first posting to this egroup and I was wondering if
you all could help me with a couple of things...
1) I am looking to begin a scratchbuilding (modeling) project and I
was wondering if there were any "plans" or blueprints
for the spaceship that Col. Taylor landed in on the first episode.
Any help would be appreciated.
2) I have seen the superb "Icarus" webpage and found it to be
an incredible resource of information. Have any of you
heard of the final disposition of the full scale ship?
I would hate to think that it was simply "chopped for scrap".
3) There are people out there who when looking at a masterpiece
only see the flaws. We all owe the Producers and Directors a
debt of gratitude each time we watch POTA. (Not to mention
the actors who probably felt that they were taking one heck of
a gamble not being laughed right out of a career.) I for one
think that the entire world of Science Fiction would be a much
thinner and less realistic genre if it wasn't for POTA.
4) Lastly, on a personal note... POTA was the first movie that I can
remember seeing. Period. It was at a drive in with my mom and dad
and I fell asleep until the scene with the scarecrows (when the music
increases) and I can still remember my mom saying "I think I saw one
of the apes" right before we get the full face shot of the hunt leader
in the cornfield. I collected in the mid 1970's all of the puzzles
and figurines, and I still have them and the box game. Everyone else
would soon begin to crave "Star Wars" and the "Star Trek" movies, but
POTA will always have a spot in my heart.

Yes, she does.
Proper autograph protocol dictates that you only send a couple things for her
to sign at a time, and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with proper
postage. <.html

Welcome to the group.
In reality, the inconsistencies occurred due to poor attention to fine
detail (there was a lot of this about before everything was able to be
scrutinised from a lounge chair in pause/slow motion!!!). A lot of people
try to explain possible reasons and I appreciate this, but just put it down
to the era and don't get too caught up in the details.
I guess it is kind of like asking why the villain does not simply shoot Mr
Bond in the head when the opportunity arises (I think Seth Green asked Dr
Evil a similar question....).

| Subject: My various musings |
.htmlA few things I've been thinking about, noticing, etc.:
o A few days ago, someone asked about one of the characters
commenting that Dodge ended up in the museum because of his
skin color. I don't know if that was ever included in any
movie, but it is in the novelization of ESCAPE. It's one of
the statements Zira makes while under the sodium pentathol
(and it really pisses off the black senator on the president's
commission).
o The DVD set is nice, though, as Alex and others noted, nothing
like a real special edition like the T2 DVD, which is incredible.
I'm irritated by the willy-nilly flip-flopping of images on the
DVD (someone mentioned the Statue of Liberty scene, but there
are lots of others too, including the family portrait on the
ESCAPE DVD).
o I've been rereading the novelizations of the films. The BENEATH
novelization was pretty close to the filmed version, but ESCAPE
is very different. Does anyone know the story behind the differences
between the novelization by Jerry Pournelle and the final script?
Was the original script for the movie just like the novelization, or
did Pournelle take great liberties with the story? The plot is
more or less the same, but the dialogue and details are vastly
different in most of the scenes.
It's interesting to see two different takes on the same story.
o All of this talk of buying the DVDs, etc., has brought back my
'70s memories of all things Apes. Today's youths take VCRs for
granted. Back when the Apes films first came out, if you wanted
to see the movie again after it left theaters (or the first time,
if you lived somewhere where the movie never played), you had to
read the novelizations. That was how you watched movies over and
over---you read the novelization over and over. And when Marvel
did the comic adaptations, they were popular because it gave you
a chance to "watch" the movie again (or as close as the
adaptation would allow). When the movies started showing up on
TV, it often meant staying up late to watch them---you certainly
couldn't tape them and watch them whenever.
This is not a "things were better then" rant. I'm just making
an observation about why novelizations and comic adaptations were
so important to Apes fans 25 and 30 years ago.
o I have the Cornelius and Ursus TOYS 'R' US Apes model reissues
(sitting next to my original Cornelius). Finding a box that
hadn't been crushed was virtually impossible, and TOYS 'R' US
doesn't list them on their web site. 8-( Someone once posted
here that the Zira and Zaius (?) models were supposed to come
out in October? Does anyone know if that's still the plan?
I guess that's it for now....

.htmlJim,
Thank you for the welcome! It sure is great to hear the enthusiasm
out there for these insightful movies. I always find it
disturbing when I ask people if they have seen any of the movies
and I hear "Nope - never seen it" or even worse "I thought it was stupid".
I can't wait to get a DVD player to get the entire set.
My copies of the movies are nearly worn out by lending them to people who
have never seen the movie before. They usually react quite
positively.
Now for something completely different....
Has ANYONE heard of a printed set of Lawgiver scrolls? I think it
might be interesting to see or even look at. Just a long shot.

Jesus god.
The post in regard to the "Escape" novelization sort of shocked me -- Jerry
Pournelle wrote it?? He's sort of a "real" sci-fi novelist. Only read one
of the things he did with Larry Niven, "Inferno", and it was pretty good
(retelling of Dante's "Inferno"....sci-fi writer gets drunk and falls out of
a window during a con).
I'm sort of interested in reading the dumb thing now. <.html

Don't want to spoil it for you, but - remember the spaceship crash at the
start of the first film? Turns out Taylor was dead all along. No wait, I'm
getting it confused...

There is no explanation other than error on the part of the film-makers. I'm
sure there are any number of explanations suggested by fans, but I'd suggest
a trawl through the list archives rather than drag them all up again!
