Back then I did the next best thing.
I recorded all the ape films on my tape recorder.
Ended up knowing all the apes films by heart, word for word.
Spooky.

The Super 8s are really not that expensive.
I've seen them go for no more than $20.00 for a Black and White Silent.
And Color and Sound $20.00 - $30.00.
Not bad when you see that the Black and White Silent films were originaly
$16.00 to $17.00 a pop back then, and the Sound and Colors were about $25.00
a pop.
Sound projectors on ebay have gone as high as $100.00. more or less.
Over all I think it's worth it, for me it's just a blast from the past.
I love it.
I would also go for the 16mm Color Sound full features but most of them are
all red/pink, a total eye sour. So I tend to stay away from those.

8-) Yep, the same Jerry Pournelle. I've read a few of his other
books with Larry Niven,. They were all good. The novelization of
ESCAPE is pretty thin, but interesting for its differences.

I remember seeing the ads for them. At the time, I didn't have s
projector or the money (in hindsight, they were incredibly cheap, but
back then, $3 might as well have been $100 to an 8-year-old or so....)

| Subject: Is the boxed set one title or four? |
.htmlWhen I bought the boxed set of PotA DVD's, I was thinking that was more
than four titles, and that I'd be able to send away for the free DVD as part
of 20th Century Fox's "buy four, get one free" promotion.
But now that I actually sit down and get ready to send away for it, I find
that my boxed set only has two proof-of-purchase tags -- one for the first
movie, and one for the boxed set.
When I did this with the James Bond DVD's -- admittedly, a whole different
company -- the boxed sets of James Bond films were EACH one title that
could be applied to their buy-several-get-one-free promotion, and EACH of
them had a proof-of-purchase tag that I could cut out and send in. So for
each box, I got an extra free movie.
So you see my confusion.
Does anybody have any experience with this? If I just cut out the one
proof-of-purchase for the whole boxed set and mail that in, will 20th
Century Fox count that as four titles, or just one?
In other words, is the PotA boxed set, by itself, enough to qualify for a
free DVD from 20th Century Fox?

Yeah, I've heard that one from time to time as well. Also about another
sci-fi fave of mine, Buckaroo Banzai. I guess some folks look at it, but
don't see it.
Or to put it another way.
People who don't think about it much, don't think much of it.
Or they can't muster up enough suspension of disbelief to imagine talking
apes.
Then again it may just be as the Japanese put it, The Big Weird!
As John Randolph, the guy who played the chairman of the presidential
commission in Escape put it. . .
"Kim, I know in my mind that behind all that foam rubber it's you, but the
makeup is so damn realistic I feel as if I'm talking to a creature from outer
space. It's downright uncomfortable . . . and dammit, disturbing." <.html

| Subject: Strange APES Double-Features (OR, "Dinosaurs, Part III") |
|
.html A few weeks or so, back, I mentioned how late in the original theatrical
release of PLANET OF THE APES, it was often teamed, with second
films--typical of distribution patterns, of the era (in the late,
lamented days, of double-features!).
I also recalled how even EARLY in a film's release, in the early, and
later, 1970s, pictures would sometimes be co-billed with a second
feature, during weekend matinees, to help bolster what was already
starting to be lagging theatre attendance, across the United States.
...All of which is just a lengthy preamble, to
saying that the APES films were often paired with some strange movies,
at least in terms of combinations, during their original runs.
Here are a few of the double-bills, I recall:
PLANET OF THE APES, and ONE MILLION BC
BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, and JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SIDE
(This is the one entry on the list I didn't actually see, and--it seems
unlikely, since the films wre released by two different studios; but I
would have sworn I saw this combo, listed in the newspapers, of the
time)
ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, and BANDOLERO (a Raquel Welch, Dean
Martin, Jimmy Stewart western!) (At the old, Belaire Theatre, in Valley
Stream, NY--scene of many of my toddler movie meories!)
CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, and THE HOT ROCK (the terrific
comedy/caper picture, starring Robert Redford, George Segal, Zero
Mostel, and Ron Leibman) (At the Franklin Theatre, in Franklin
Square--still there, remarkably, but now a quad, for what seems like,
forever!)
Any other double-feature recollections, out there?
:-)
Best,
Jim Burns <.html

I've got a poster from a double bill of Battle with "The Neptune Factor".
And while it's not strictly the same sort of thing (no posters or anything),
a nearby cinema (in Edinburgh to be precise) showed a great triple bill on
Halloween last year - PotA, The Omega Man and Logan's Run. I was in heaven.

That's cool David, they're just pulling your
chain.
It's always good to know what's out there to
purchase. I know I don't mind.
I would buy them myself but I purchased the whole set

Selling and trade would be

Thanks, the remake media stuff won't be out for a while. But the page has
already been setup so that I won't have to do it at the last minute.
Most likely nothing won't be out until the turn of the year.
But I am keeping my eyes open just in case.

.html Hello, Everybody--
The list activity has been kind of light recently--
'Hope this finds all of you, well!
Here's a question:
In recent weeks, we've mentioned Charlton Heston on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE;
THE SIMPSONS; Paul Williams, in organtutan makeup, singing on THE
TONIGHT SHOW, in 1973; and Mike Douglas doing an entire episode of his
talk-show, in APES regalia, also early '70s...
What OTHER comedic PLANET OF THE APES bits, or spoofs, do you folks
remember?
It would be partocularly ineresting to hear from our overseas list
members, if they remember any European APES skits, or other TV
references!
Thanks, as always, for your time!

I remember McDowall doing The Carol Burnett show. At the opening of the show
he was in make up getting a big laugh singing a duet of Oh How Happy We Could

I seem to recall Steve Allen doing the ending, but instead of the Statue of
Liberty it involved something like McDonalds, Dunkin' Donuts or or something
like that.
Here in the UK, there was a show "This Morning With Richard Not Judy" in
which comedians Stewart Lee and Richard Herring had a regular series of
sketches based on "lost final scenes" from movies. Some of them were very
funny indeed, but unfortunately the one week I didn't see it was the week
there was a PotA spoof. I think what happened is that the main character
found the Statue of Liberty but still didn't realise what was going on. A
little further on he'd find some other famous landmark and still not realise
he was on Earth. And so on, until eventually he came across something really
stupid and trivial at which point he realised. Doesn't sound very funny the
way I tell it, but heck, I never saw it.

I haven't seen one second of footage, read one page of script and I have to
admit, that I'm going to boycott this film. First I don't see any reason to
remake this film! Can't Hollycrud come up with an original idea? And as for
that Rethinking, not remake. Well, bleah to that. They can smokescreen all
they want. I hope this movie stinks so bad, Hollycrud doesn't make a remake
for a 100 years. I have really negative feelings toward this, I'm sorry to

be sitting back with some Pop Secret, watching my VHS/Letterbox version of

Really!
I am waiting for a movie... Not a big, fantastic, extraordinary
movie... But, a "Planet of the Apes" remake with positive and negative
points. It's normal. I believe in Tim Burton's talent and experience. But
the original "Planet of the Apes" (1968), directed by Franklin J. Schaffner,
always will be in my mind - because it's a wonderful movie!

I am a long time fan of all of the Ape movies. I seem to recall back
in the not too distant past that people from all over were saying the
same things about "Escape", and "Conquest", and "Battle". Now these
obviously were not attempts at a remake but the original idea was
retained and we learned so much more from these movies that was only
hinted at in the original. The same goes for "Startrek, The Next
Generation". They kept the original "Startrek" premise and expanded
their universe to include among other things- the Borg.
I hope that this movie will keep the best ideas from these movies and
will expand the storyline even farther so we have more and more
new material and ideas to think and dream of.
If it turns out to be a "classic wine mixed with dishwater", then we
always have the original tales to turn back too.
May the "Lawgiver" have no mercy.

Planet: The Crash scene is great.
When Taylor Finds Dodge's body in the museum.
The Final shot. I still love that shot with the Statue Of Liberty. It
rocks.
Beneath: Brent meeting Nova
Brent and Taylor killing the Mutant Enforcer.
Nova's death because it shows that even a hardcore Cynic like
Taylor can
Find some humanity.
Escape: The opening and the looks on the officers faces.
Cornelius and Zira on Trial when they get released from chains.
Zira's interrogation
Hasslein getting killed.
Conquest: The opening (I wish they'd have used the original, where the ape is
trying to
escape the city and gets shot, the officer is shocked by the
condition it's in.
I think this may be only in the shooting script.)
Caesar's Interrogation
Caesar's speech at the end.
All the fighting scenes (which were much bloodier)
Battle: The Uncut version with the scenes of the Doomsday Bomb.
Does anyone know if Nova has been cast yet, or if there will be a Nova? The
original novel is being re-released in November. I think I'll have to pick it
up. I wish they'd re-release the other movie adaptations! <.html

yeah I think that is dumb as hell. it's not like they wouldn't have

Of course, I agree with you. A sequel as a continuation, maintaining as
best you can the look & feel of the original would be one thing... some
sequels are actually excellent, great even. Just take a look at Alien, & then
Aliens. Awesome. Course, Alien3 and the Resurrection were a bit lame in
different respects, but that's because in both cases they ignored/changed
something from the originals.
A remake on the other hand is really hard to pull off well... and most
especially of a "classic". I'm not saying a well done remake won't or can't
be good. I don't know, I came in on all this just recently & kind of late, so
I'm not up on what the new one is all about anyway.

I think this was mentioned a few months ago. I mentioned then that I was
concerned that making the movie "teen-friendly" would make the movie
embarrassingly pretentious. Whenever I think about that, I can't get out of
my mind the image of Leonardo DiCaprio playing the part of Tayor, grimicing
and waxing cynical about how there must be something out there better than
man. Ugh. It reminds me of a DVD of a movie I'd never heard of before that
I saw on DVD called "Gen X Cops". It had the tag line "Time Enough to Die".
Pretentious as all hell.

Shot-for-shot remake (give or take a few angles, puh-lease) of "Psycho" was
due to Universal wanting the film in color. Not kidding. How those first 20
minutes in "Wizard of Oz" haven't been colorized at this point is a frickin'

True, it may suck. But I will see it regardless. I'd rather Terry Gilliam
was doing it. But I've enjoyed many of Tim Burton's films, and it's my hope
he will do right by it.
Also, even if it is lame, if it's not a hit, they won't be doing any more
Apes films any time soon. Maybe this time they'll get better. I didn't care
for many of the television episodes, but they were the only game in town. I
guess when it comes down to it, I'd rather see a lame Apes movie, than no
Apes movies. That's the kind of fan I am.

I couldn't agree more.
On top of that, if McDowall alone with all the cast members support such a
project, I don't see why the fans shouldn't either.

I don't know if he is or not. The image of him playing that as a result of
trying to make the upcoming Apes movie more teen- or youth-friendly is just
an image that plagues me. Good actor or not, a lot of people would probably
go to the movie just to drool over how he looks.

I agree, Mark Walhberg wasn't the best choice, but on the other hand I don't
think you'll ever find Gibson, Harrison nor Crowe in a Burton film anytime
soon.
So with the choices that Burton has worked with in the past, Walhberg is the
best choice, although he's never done a Burton film in the past.
Intense acting is what the Taylor role needs as was Brent, and Walhberg has
it that's for sure.

That's as may be. Too bad Depp's schedule won't allow him to participate.
He would have made a great Cornelius. And I'd rather have him as Taylor then
DiCraprio. What the role needs is a tough guy who we're not used to seeing
lose.
That was the secret to the Taylor character. He's got a tough time winning
against an army of apes. <.html

.html I believe that we are missing the point.....
Unfortunately, the movie industry is no longer spawning the talent that
they were in the past. It is a more "touchy feely" kind of world where
to be a real man is despised. Now people want to "feel your pain", or
they want you to "feel their pain". Its a madhouse indeed.
If a young "Charlton Heston" were to try to try for a part today, he
wouldn't get a fair or unbiased chance.
I believe that when the executives use the words "Teen Friendly" it is
really a smoke screen for the letters P.C.
Lastly, I must admit that I have never seen the remake of "Night of the
living dead". It sounds like a stinko movie.

Well, it's not really a 'remake', it's an 'addition to'. What they did was
take the great original, snip a scene here or there, add some new really
lame, bs scenes and an ending stupid enough to be in a Friday, Scream or Elm
st. Movie. They took fine wine and diluted it with tap water. Stick with the
original, because the 30th anniversary film SUCKS. <.html
